What you pay is what you get, except for Stihl oils..
Stihl oils are the lowest quality on the market and the most expensive, but that's exception that confirms the rule..

    Your opening is awesome.
I think you’re doing a wonderful service to the lawn and garden community by doing this build/rebuild/repower. Saws are expensive.
They are expensive to fix and expensive to buy thus people looking into the China kits. Thank you.

Let me first say that I love your honesty with this video. I was looking forward to watching you pull this rebuild off but I can't wait for you to get the rebuild kit to finish the video. As a fan of your channel, I can hardly wait for the finish. I will say that with all the after market parts I have ordered for repairs, they are never quite the same as the OEM parts. There is always some difference with I get them and sometimes they will work and sometimes not. For me, I think the difference is most things I work on are just really old, and it's hard to get the correct parts. But it does give me something to tinker with in my old age. I want to experience the repair process even if I never get the machine to run like new again.

    😅Great video!
I recently did an aftermarket rebuild on a Stihl MS180C with a burned OEM engine. I bought an entire assembled Chinese engine off of Ebay for about $35. Not trusting the factory silicone crank seal, I opened the crankcase and resealed it more thoroughly. It held pressure and vacuum quite well afterward. Final assembly was simple, but the engine wouldn’t start on completion. Turns out the old OEM carb was defective despite several kit rebuilds (and it seems to have caused the lean running burn-out issue to begin with). I replaced the old dead OEM, non-adjustible Walbro carb with a dirt cheap Chinese carb off Ebay that is fully jet adjustable (after drilling two screwdriver access holes in the plastic case). Getting the aftermarket carb tuned was not easy, as the engine easily flooded during cold cranking on choke. It still only starts cold at full throttle with the choke off. However, once running and warmed up, the rebuilt MS180 starts normally and seems to function very nicely. Interestingly, the aftermarket MS180 engine seems happiest with $15 fully adjustable Chinese aftermarket carburetors. I was actually GIVEN the original burned up MS180C after Stihl refused to work on IT. Now I have a full functional MS180c with a new engine, for $35. How long it will last is unknown, but so far, so good. Dr. K.

Thank you for posting this excellent video. You are doing great with this project. We all know that very few things work out on the first try -- and you tell us this is your first engine rebuild. So you now have some experience. It is all about try, try, try again. Then success happens! You really are doing fine and I think you are doing the right thing, buying a full engine rebuild kit. You will still get the experience of assembling and testing it. Or, as an alternative, perhaps you can get a pre-assembled, ready to use engine at a good price -- either on E-bay or from another source. We both understand that often, success is not an instant thing. You will find the right parts, overcome the challenges, and get the machine cutting wood again. I know it! And then you will have this experience and you will feel more confident with the next rebuild project...and I feel sure that more will come your way. Keep up the great work! Happy Halloween!

I think the biggest lesson here has been overlooked by a lot of people. Yes the first lesson might be that cheap aftermarket parts don't save money but the big lesson came when you pressure tested the saw. How many people buying the cheapest kit they can find would do that? They would be complaining the saw wasn't running right if at all and then buy a cheap chinese carb to fix it. Good Job!

Great video! Love the special effects. When you had the ceremonial burying, I was thinking “send it to me, a aftermarket cylinder and piston is all it needs”.
Most OEM major parts pricing prohibits the rebuilding of most chainsaws. If a saw as nice as your 290 is mine to rebuild, I go with a “Meteor” brand cylinder kit. Made in Italy, around $150. Much higher quality than the China cylinders, maybe slightly less than OEM. Old beater saws in my shop get the China kits.

Great into! You just set a high bench mark for Taryl. have had a MS290 for better than 23 years and love it. I will have to make sure I give it extra care because of the OEM cost of replacement parts since the 290 is obsolete.

I can't say enough about how appropriate the intro was that hasn't already been said. Vincent Price is smiling from above. As one who wanted to see you do the 390 upgrade, i think you have shown that the job is very precise. AM or OEM, dont mix and match. This is a very valuable video to review for those wanting to build a hot rod saw. Press on regardless. Hope to see the resolution of this project. Thank you.

sharing these sorts of issues is SO useful!! When this sort of thing happens to me I tend to assume I've been at fault and it would not happen to someone who knows what they are doing - so to see yourself get into issues is very reassuring and gives me the confidence to keep working on them - your videos have helped me fix my gardener's O23 which he can ill afford to replace - I think it is just the crank seals as I can blow through the engine and hear my breath coming out of the blade-side crank seal. I just got the sealant and was about to re-build it but I thought I'd check out another of your videos.
    Many thanks!

I’m doing an aftermarket MS290 to MS390 aftermarket conversion this weekend. Wish me luck! I did however, buy new bearings as the stock ones have plastic cages that tend to fracture and destroy the saw once it has a lot of hours on it.

Hello again from Oz Erica. Excellent intro. Great video overall. I've rebuilt 2 saws with chinese parts, an MS390 and a 034AV. The advice I got was find out which cylinder and piston kits had the most positive feedback and reviews and I ask around my mates as well. I know that some kits are better than others. I used a Mako branded set on my MS390 and only had 2 issues. One was the muffler bolts didn't fit the cylinder very well. I had to grind it out with my Drexel tool. This is best done before you start assembly. You need to make sure the muffler fits. Second was that the hole in the cylinder for the earth wire was tapped as I think m5 size and the oem bolt didn't fit properly and I broke it off inside. A pain get out again. Lesson being, check all the thread sizes on the new parts. For the 034 it was a dream rebuild no fettling required. Good luck with the rebuild. Cheers Rich

The expensive OEM seals are to be used with a clamshell re-assembly, the cheaper OEM seals are pushed in an existing assembled clamshell, given the case halves are still sealed with no leaks. Aftermarket seals are anyone’s guess! I’m gonna pre-fit the case halves and measure the bore before I slap it together, thanks for the video, it may have just saved me $$

I absolutely love the beginning ,Erica!!! I had one MS290 that I took in as trade once, it was old but probably only ever cut 1 cord of wood in it's "life". I had to get rid of it to someone who would love it and use it and wouldn't care that it was a "weakling saw". I also wouldn't use aftermarket junk when I worked on saws.

Yep. More thumbs up for a very suitable intro, for Halloween and the scary times this saw is presenting to you. I’m thinking the difference in the two cylinders is due to upgrading from a 290 to a 390. Bore is obviously bigger, and I’m guessing the stroke may also be bigger? Time to do some quality measuring comparing the old vs new cylinder…deck height to bottom pan. Just say it did bolt up correctly…piston to head clearance may then be different resulting in a different compression ratio due to the length of the connecting rod. .. which is probably different between a 290 and a 390…??? Please post your conclusive follow up. I will be waiting in anticipation!! Thumbs up everyone! 👍👍👍

    • @keegantimber8571
      @keegantimber8571 25 днів тому

Well. I did a quick parts lookup. My theory TRICKED myself. Seems crankshaft assembly are interchangeable between 290 and 390. I think I would still be doing some measuring. Hope you TREAT us with your valued conclusions on this frightful issue! 👍👍👍

I have a Stihl MS290 that i rebuilt 4 years ago using aftermarket parts. I kept the engine pan since it wasn't damaged but it has the same problem with wobbling that you had. It didn't go well. I am giving it another shot with OEM parts and beleive it or not it still wobbles. When i finished, it would not pull easily at all. I am going to break it apart and try again. What can I say, it's a challenge.

Hindsight is 20-20; but if you're upgrading engine capacity I would have ordered the whole kit, not just the head and cylinder. I suspect the crankcase may have fit OK if you kept the capacity the same as the MS290.
If you take out the seals completely do you still get the rocking?
    DON'T GIVE UP!

@marriedwithsmallengines If any of my Stihl machines wear out I would probably rebuild it with Stihl parts and probably buy a new one too...
As you know I already have 3 machines waiting for fourth to be delivered..

I ve done many different Sthil chainsaws with Amazon after market cylinder and piston kits, and have not had a problem with any of them. However, you need to inspect the inner surface of the cylinder blocks and make sure the ports are machined properly. if any question on the intake or exhaust ports, chamfer them with a small piece of 320 grit sand paper, only on the edge of the ports. NOT ON THE WALL OD THE CYLINDER. This will assure the rings will not catch on the milled surfaces of those ports.

I had the same exact problem the other day,was using a aftermarket piston in one of my saws and the oem c clip was loose in the after market piston. My tree service friend is having good luck with his ms290 I rebuild with a cheap online kit. Why he likes that saw though I have no idea 😂.

Don’t think you did anything wrong but I did notice the oem pan doesn’t fit well on the aftermarket cylinder on the one I did, I did end up using the pan it came with.
