Hi everyone! I hope you enjoy this video about a Stihl 036 that was saved from the scrap yard! I love working on and diagnosing these older Stihl saws! I just added *FOUR* Stihl 026 and 024 saws to my repair line up! I can't wait to get to them! I promise not to look at them until you are with me! Did you see the chainsaw GIVEAWAY announcement? Watch it here >>ua-cam.com/video/pQ3h5hwOkpw/v-deo.html Please Subscribe to the channel and LIKE this video - it really helps me out! If you have already subscribed to my channel - THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! The more subscribers and viewers I have coming here - the more time I can spend doing this for you! Thank you again, and I hope you enjoy!
These older saws are typically what a lot of folks look for to fix up, because we either can't or don't want to spend $1000 on a 60cc+ saw. Typically, if I can fix one for less than I could sell it for, then I go for it. Crank seals, a carb kit or aftermarket carb, a possible intake boot, and maybe a clutch is not terribly expensive, and I would definitely fix this old guy. It's earned a retirement from the rental business, and put into the hands of an appreciative owner! Good video as usual, Erica!
I agree, l just repaired an 026 that someone else did not want to spend $100.00 to put back into service. I have kept it for myself, have used it several times and it works great. The lesson is don’t give up on these older saws most still have a lot of life left in them, especially the Stihl. I would like to see it given a second chance.
Very informative. I watch all your videos. Something like that 036, you put all that time into it. How do you reclaim that. Good luck. Will continue to watch your vids!
This technician has a way of explaining things to make finding problems exciting. She would make a great sales person. I bet she sells alot of new chainsaws by just being honest with people.
I'm fixing my fathers 044 that I inherited after he pasted. It appears to have lost a clutch spring which caused it to rub on the brake band. That caused enough heat to melt the clutch bearing and oiler worm gear. I'm hoping the crank seals are okay. Parts are on order. It's because I found your channel that I decided to try and fix it. Thank you.
Erica is a perfect teacher. Very nice to see this full diagnose for this old saw. I believe this is one of the best saw built by stihl, To answer the question asked by Erica, probably she could find a customer who likes this model. A carb kit, 2 crank seals, air filter, gas filter, 3 clutch springs, 1 clutch bearing , 1 sprocket, .oil and charpen the chain...to get this saw ready to run again, probably for 200 USD it's a good price. If piston and cylinder are good it's worth to fix it. Else, keep it for parts. And grind please the 2 screws on the handle !
Greetings from the swabian sawman. An 036 is always worth to dig in deep. It's an awesome saw. In my humble opinion this saw is worth a complete rebuild. Btw acc my experience the crank seal on the clutch side is in 90% of cases the first of the 2 crank seals to fail. Greetings from Germany
Wow Erica! Kudos! What a great instructional video with a ton of information on diagnosis and repair of this chainsaw. Your info can also be applicable to many two stroke engines including snowmobiles. Thank you so much because I learned from you. BEFORE you called the owner, I thought you were being very generous with your $75. limit!! Really enjoyed how you interacted with us, the viewers! I was dang focused on that pressure gauge like I was standing beside you as your apprentice! 😃😃😃. Thumbs up everyone! 👍👍👍👍
Red levers are generally the first year or 2 of production. I have a couple of 026 red levers waiting to be brought back to life, I love my 036 pro. It's a beast.
I made some more notes today on diagnostics due to your very in depth explanations. Thank you for all of the information that no one else either uses or shares. I look forward to all of your videos.
Kudos to you Erica, for not forcing Stihl Ultra on your customers, it really is a dirty oil, regardless of how much it is ran. I've had major carbon issues on pistons in my saws as I ran Ultra for a couple of years after the big "push" from the Stihl dealer about how good it was and better than anything else. Been running Sabre at 40:1 past couple of years, and it has cleaned up 90% of the carbon and filth, and the saws run clean with no smell. Would never use anything else. The cheaper Stihl 2 stroke oil here is good stuff, a colleague uses that and he has had no issues with carbon buildup either. Love the 036 too, another excellent and informative video, thank you! Your channel is by far the best on chainsaws out there, with the average non chainsaw guy gaining a lot of knowledge from you.
Great video Erica, and like the way you methodically diagnose problems. I have to admit to constantly screaming at the video for you to remove those self tapping screws from the handle that were tearing up your work bench. Love your work. Cheers from Australia!
Great video, two-stroke oil can be divisive however any Richard Flag videos will give you a good idea about what you should run. We have Castrol here in the UK and I think it is pretty good. I would keep the saw for spares.
I just recently worked on a Stihl ms250 that the owner said it had been worked on two separate times by the same Stihl dealer and could not get it to run right, when I got to the carburetor it had the same issue as yours, somebody pulled the micro screen out and did not replace it. after talking with the customer again he said that the carburetor was rebuilt at the Stihl dealer. after a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner and another carburetor kit it ran perfectly.😮 Love your videos always looking to see if there's a new one.😀
I am absolutely in love with vintage professional Stihl saws. If maintained correctly they run forever. I wonder if you ever service a saw with handle heating. Sending love from Germany, Alex.
I have the “modern” version of that saw, the MS361. It’s a great saw! I’ve had since new and it’s never even needed a new spark plug. I keep it clean and use synthetic oil mix. I can sit for months without being ran and never fails to start. I paid about $700 US for it and it’s been worth every penny!
Great methodical diagnosis, as always. This old warrior deserves to be fixed in my opinion, it would be great to see it running as it should, those old Stihls are great saws. Keep up the good work 👍
I have an 036 that I bought new in the 90s. It's still my favorite tree cutting saw. As a hobbyist, I wish I could find more 036s for free like the one in your video to fix and sell.
Gotta love your honesty, and your detail in diagnosing these Chainsaws. 😊. It's great for getting information about repairs. You and Scott ( Husky ) are really on another Level.
Thank you for spending the time and effort explaining your diagnostic rational as you went through the saw. It was very informative. I have an old 038 from the mid 80's that is still running strong. As others have stated this saw deserves a second chance. We would love to see the rebuild. Thank you.
Rebuild it! Soo many people do not know how to rebuild a saw from the case up! I learned on youtube how to do it! Should be an excellent representation of the "Right Way" it should be done!
Thank you for explaining the blue oil. Never knew Stihl made it blue or it came from Castrol. All we have down here is the silver bottles and the orange bottles.
Thank you for posting this excellent video! I really appreciate the way you carefully follow the same diagnostic methods for determining the cause of the running issue. I'm impressed that you have three carburetor stands. Maybe James Condon ought to get one for his projects. He pretty frequently does a carburetor teardown followed by reaming out with needle probes and an ultrasonic bath. Of course his carburetors are quite a bit larger. One of the folks below has commented that a lot of the time, it is the clutch side that has a crank seal leak. Maybe checking that first can save you some time. I think the saw should go to a recycling center. I don't think you can really use the engine for parts since the piston is scored, and if the piston is scored, the cylinder walls might turn out to have damage too (in places where your camera can't see.) I believe that the new light you bought is a big help to you and to us viewers, too. Thanks again for a very nice video.
I had a 044 that was over 40 years old!! Had been thru it a couple times before, just was super sad to find out that the parts that I needed were no longer available! It was a great saw
Well now this was an very interesting video and especially very interesting to me since I own a 036 Stihl chainsaw. I bought my 036 Stihl chainsaw in 1994 from Fairview service in Hutchinson Kansas. So it is now 30 years old and still going strong. I have maintained it very well and my fuel tank is spotless inside. Probably I should replace the original fuel filter even though it looks good. This 036 has been worked extremely hard with countless hours on it and it owes me nothing. The only thing that I do not like about this 036 is that mine did not come with a compression release the next year however did and if you get it on the wrong compression side when you pull the recoil rope, it is really hard to pull. Also my carburetor is all original and has never been rebuilt. As long as it just wants to keep running I guess I will just continue to use it. I do have other Stihl chainsaws and that is the brand that I have always used.
I made a carb holder today from a scrap metal cube-- each side has different bolt patterns for certain carbs-thanks for the idea--Old Cat mechanic. Collect -repair and run vintage saws!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Erica, enjoy watching your show, as a retired senior, enjoy tinkering with these, I would love to own that one , have a semi unit as well , 036, if youre willing to part with it as a whole unit as shown, I will pay for shipping to PG BC, V2N5G5, if interested , please post me , thanks, keep putting video like this , help me and others as well, Love it
I've watched a couple of your videos prior to this one. I am going to subscribe to your channel now. I learned a lot about you in this video. You're very thorough. Thank You.
U are very effective in checking out issues (I love those older saws) they were made to last. thanks for showing all u do. 100 points John M Milo Maine
Thank u ,Erica..Your a top of the class tech. Luv your skills.Keep it as a parts saw.I could never throw a saw away.Thats why my sheds are full of parts.lol
Just found your channel. Really enjoy your diagnostic process. First thing I would do is take them screws out of the rental tag. They are scarring up your nice bench. I have a feeling you will get it running at a better time. Enjoy your videos
Definitely rebuild it, even though it has light score to cylinder, it would still be a good firewood saw new rings and good cleaning. . And take that tag off!
Stihl used to use the blue with extra dye made by Castrol in Australia before they changed to the Stihl Red and Green Ultra I personally use the Stihl Blue by Castrol as I brought many bottles.😊 The Castrol branded 2 stroke oil is still avialable in Australian.😊 Erica stop sliding the saw on the table😊😊😊 Clutch side needing replacements Parts saw only😊
Well you have done all the hard work figuring out what was wrong, put new crank seals and a carb kit in it, see what happens! Really enjoy your repair videos.
Erica, I used to run my saws all year round, but now that I’m retired I could benefit from a good video on putting up your saw for storage through the winter. Have you made one yet?
hi, How are you doing today? I am doing pretty good myself. This is you viewer from Swanton Vermont. I think that you should rebuild the Stihl 036 chain saw just bring it back just because of the age of the chainsaw. I hope that you take care until next time!
I just picked up an 036 same one with the red lever. Not sure what that means. Either way the saw is mint except it looks like it was used to cut tree roots. The guy I bought it from said it was his father's saw and it was his baby. Opened it up and it's full of dirt and grit! Got it cleaned up and running proper.
Hi Erica, I seem like that Chainsaw has had a rough life running with so much neglect. I was expecting you to take out those screws scratching your table after the owner gave you the saw. I would have LOL I love when you dive deep into the saw to find out all your information. To answer your question .....I would part it out since part are discontinued. Maybe it can help someone who has one like it and gives their saw better care than a rental shop, Thanks for another great video.
Hi Erica🎉. Thanks for showing us this video. Really Interesting Detective work. Probably would be a good old saw if repaired but the cost factor kicks in I guess. Parts Box it is. The new light is so so. Thanks Again for the Great Video 🎉❤🎉.
The most plausible explanation of the red lever is that the US OSHA required power equipment stop switches be red in color at that time. Then decided that black on orange was easier to identify anyway and Stihl went back to black. That sounds so typical of a government agency. Thank you for the 2T oil info! The silver colored bottles are the Ultra in the US and is NOT made by Castrol. The orange bottle is the better oil and I have just seen the return of the orange bottle locally. Another informative video!👍
The crystal ball putting in some work today! Good job 8 ball! Looks like there is some interest in chat about buying this saw. If it were me I would put it back together and sell it to the highest bidder!👍
We all love learning from you. So, let's see, if I were in your shoes, I would ultrasonic clean the carburetor, and kit it. Then test it on a running 036. If it fails, then the saw is just a parts saw. If it's good, then change that seal and vacuum and pressure test. If it passes, then hone the cylinder, and lightly sand the scoring on the piston. Reassemble and vacuum and pressure test. Then replace the other seal and retest. If all is good, then replace filters and go to your boneyard for a better bar and chain. How am I doing?
Erica- the Stihl oil controversy is about the silver total synthetic. I have run it without any issues, but I am just a home gamer, probably under 5 gallons a year, spread over five or six saws. The reports are it carbons more than the mix or pure petroleum. Probably tuning and heat or lack of peak running times is my guess also. Some falsely believe that a rich mixture is a good thing 😢.
When I bought my first new Stihl chainsaw in 1973 (045), the dealer gave me a bottle of Castrol mix oil. Said it was the best quality oil and don't use anything else. Hartill's Saw Shop Chewelah WA
I say rebuild it since it still has a good cylinder and piston. I'd be interested in seeing the seal replaced on that one. My OCD would have taken that tag off a long time ago.
I understand the crank seal was leaking, but I wondered if after fixing the intake boot and cleaning up the carb if it would stay running. It held pressure and it seemed like the vac leak wasn’t terrible, ie, it didnt leak down to zero. Id say not worth putting in a crank seal and bar and chain, but re-assemble and see if it runs. Then save for parts. Also, these are getting more entertaining as youve gone along.
Thanks for sharing another great video. Saw is past its "best by" date and given its rental history investing money in repairing it to a running chainsaw would not be logical in my opinion. If you had a small thick piece of foam or a few short pieces of rubber hose handy you could push it over items like those sharp screws to prevent them scratching you bench top - just a thought. Love the crystal ball approach followed up with actual testing to find the problems. 🙂
Had old Husky's which were great saws ' I've got newer Styles that won't run well . I just bought a 7310 Echo and it's best piece of equipment I've run in a long long time . ❤ It has a standard carb ! Echo all the way ... ehh
Rainy day fix carb can be cleaned through out so that isnt much cost ....the rest depends on seals/ time/cost and maybe sell make a little profit from it once done but ashame to chuck away lol

Curious but since you posted that 'Echo saw giveaway once you reach 25K subscribers' video,
have you seen a sudden jump in new subs?
Looking forward to the early saw repairs! You should offer some merch for sale, and you can do future giveaways by drawing from sales. 😊
Looks like that saw is running rich and the transfers need opening and exhaust widening
I would like to see the crank seal changed plus the other faults and see it running again 😊. I'm learning loads from you.
Extremely methodical and patient. I like your style, hopefully it will be repaired one day or at least help repair another saw. 👍

I had an 036. It was very powerful and I really liked that saw. Could not keep a crank seal in it. Scored several pistons before it was given up on.
I have another Stihl 036 video coming up...and guess what...:)
Wow Erica! Kudos! What a great instructional video with a ton of information on diagnosis and repair of this chainsaw. Your info can also be applicable to many two stroke engines including snowmobiles. Thank you so much because I learned from you. Very thorough job Erica! Here in Iowa a shop would not even look at that saw for 60 dollars American. Great video as always! 👍
Great methodical diagnosis, as always. This old warrior deserves to be fixed in my opinion, it would be great to see it running as it should, those old Stihls are great saws. Keep up the good work 👍

It's great for getting information about repairs. You and Scott ( Husky ) are really on another Level.
Morning Erica. I'm a chainsaw collector from France and i enjoy your videos. Red levers Stihl chainsaws have nothing different from black levers saws.
Great score for you! A nice pro saw for like $50 bucks!
Amazing Video Erica You Left no Stone Unturned 😇😀😊😎👍🏼 Not Only Do You Have a Crystal Ball But You Also Have a Magic 8 Ball too
Fix it if U have the time always great watching you never too old to learn would be a great project to give someone to rebuild tutored by you

Some customers don't realize how much time it takes to diagnose many of these problems. $75 doesn't go far. Great video!
Gotta fix it! Some of us would love such a saw rebuilt by a fabulous tech like you!!!
Great diagnosis and vac testing, I would like to see the saw repaired and test run , great channel and great content
Fix it. I have 2 036 and 2 026. They are my favorite go to saws. Great video. Thank you.

Wspaniale filmy, bardzo przyjemnie się oglada. Mój język niecjest dobry słabo rozumiem ale rozumiem bo bardzo dobrze tłumaczysz i pokazujesz.
The 036 is in my top favorites, it's a great all around saw!!!
I have the same exact saw ,no decompression valve on it either. Good to see this video, all ways wandered about that.have owned it from New, mid 1990s
Definitely rebuild it, even though it has light score to cylinder, it would still be a good firewood saw new rings and good cleaning. . And take that tag off!

The Castrol branded 2 stroke oil is still avialable in Australian.😊
Erica stop sliding the saw on the table😊😊😊
Clutch side needing replacements
Parts saw only😊
Your jokes throughout the video were hilarious!! Finally one saw WITHOUT spark arrestor straight from factory!!
Thank you! 😊
@@marriedwithsmallengines You said today's replacement would be MS362, is my MS311 close to this?
You should fix it! Lovely saw!!
Love your content, please don't stop!
Another great video thank you
Absolutely fabulous video, thank you very much ma'am!!!
Great video! I would like to see this saw repaired. Especially interested in how you replace crankshaft seals.
I own a 041AV Farmboss
Definitely for part's
Another parts donor... great teaching videos.
The magic 8 ball wasn't wrong.😊
That was a good diagnosis, it might be worth repairing for a spare 😊. We have Battlefield equipment here in Sydney .
hi,
How are you doing today? I am doing pretty good myself.
This is you viewer from Swanton Vermont.
I think that you should rebuild the Stihl 036 chain saw just bring it back just because of the age of the chainsaw.
I hope that you take care until next time!
Hi! I’m so glad that you are here to watch my videos!! I will bring the 036 out again , soon 😊
Rebuild it! Lol hate to see it go away. Start a good fund me for it. I'd contribute. 😅😅
I would have LOL
I love when you dive deep into the saw to find out all your information.
To answer your question .....I would part it out since part are discontinued.
Maybe it can help someone who has one like it and gives their saw better care than a rental shop,
Thanks for another great video.
Another awesome video, great work thank you Erica
Love the videos! Please keep them coming!
I would like to see you rebuild the saw. If I lived in Canada, I would be interested in purchasing it.
Ship me that 036..🥰
My 038 Farm Boss needs a friend
I’d love to see you fix that old saw. They don’t make them like that anymore
Would love to see a video on fixing it
When I bought my first new Stihl chainsaw in 1973 (045), the dealer gave me a bottle of Castrol mix oil. Said it was the best quality oil and don't use anything else. Hartill's Saw Shop Chewelah WA
Ich würde die Säge gern kaufen, ich liebe alte Sägen.

Sell him a new saw! That’s what he wants!! Your vids are great.
Wise words from a fantastic human being!!🥰🥰🥰💪🍺🍺🤘
I say rebuild it since it still has a good cylinder and piston. I'd be interested in seeing the seal replaced on that one. My OCD would have taken that tag off a long time ago.
If I found a Stihl & could get it running for less than what a new costs it's a no brainer for me.
Please rebuild it, that would make a great video.
flush them off w your handy dandy zip cutter! Good vid
Morning Erica
Good morning!! :)
Nice job
looks like a lot the comments are leaning towards rebuild. go for it, keep this old workhorse doing what it does best, cut wood
On Scott’s carb stand there is magnet on the back to hold the screws!
42:10 good test ❤🎉
Great coin toss video, that was one that didn't make it, great video
Fixed👍🏼
Had old Husky's which were great saws ' I've got newer Styles that won't run well . I just bought a 7310 Echo and it's best piece of equipment I've run in a long long time . ❤ It has a standard carb !
Echo all the way ... ehh
Pozdrawiam serdecznie 👍
Yay! The 036.
It’s definitely worth fixing since they no longer make the O series
Rainy day fix carb can be cleaned through out so that isnt much cost ....the rest depends on seals/ time/cost and maybe sell make a little profit from it once done but ashame to chuck away lol
