As someone that works on Stihls everyday as a profession, that saw is not old enough or cool enough to justify that kind of money. A grand tops with serious sentimental values.
Ya, it has star head screws. Looks like it came out of a collapsed barn . I worked with a guy around 1980 who had a Stihl chainsaw from the 1940s . It was like 20hp mower engine with a cutting bar. He bought it as a collector item . I'm betting he still has it today
NO WAY the chainsaw was sent to him from Germany. The inside of the box is labeled in English. The potato chips are sold in Germany under the name Pringels and not Lays. + Why would you anybody send a chainsaw halfway around the world when the manufacturer and the best spare parts supplier for a Stihl saw is in Germany and hardly anyone in Germany is called Jonathan.
This was so painful to watch. I've been watching restoration videos for 4 yrs now. And these ones taint the restoration world. 😢 the paint on the crank case seal area is what got me the most. I've rebuilt plenty of motors and that's a no no. All the pitting not taken care of. The hot glue when you can see the original screw holes. Ugh. Painful.
well. how to say it.. everything in this video is freaking wrong.. painted internal surfaces? painted surfaces that are supposed to seal? not to mention.. if someone really paid 10K for such restoration.. bein it me, i would shove that chainsaw up his buttcrack... internal dimensions unchecked ( even tho the original engine was pretty much destroyed due to critical failure and piston with dead was totaly obliterated.. ) after seeing this, iam good for pouring some alc in my belly and acid in my eyes so i do not see this shite anymore
I'm so glad you said this. I'm not a restoration pro at all, but I love watching them and watch a lot. I found myself immediately cringing when the painting sandblasting (if you can call it that) and painting was happening with a fuel tube that was left wide open, pitting, etc. It just looked awful, and I thought "Sweet baby Jesus I hope noone paid $10k for this half-assed cosmetic job. BUT - I guess I'm actually paying into his fund by interacting with this video, so...I'm the problem, not the solution! lol
I really like the way machined surfaces are painted before using gaskets and gasket sealant is used with paper gaskets... must be a new thing but $10k to restore a $1k-$2k saw is a stretch.
Funny how Mustie and others are restoring things for people who only pay for parts because they make a fortune from Subscribers and likes with the video. How much does 133,000 Subscribers and $10,000.00 add up to for a 30 minute video???
The chain is completely gone the chips on the floor show that the gullets have to be filed down also, according to the size of the cutting teeth, and the RPMs are not nowhere near where they’re supposed to be
If you prepped the engine cases better before painting them this would of be a 10/10, you should never paint the inside of the cases, also the mating surface for the cylinder base should of all been masked off prior to painting (no hate intended) think of it as constructive criticism
Totally agree, but just an fyi, Stihl painted the inside of the crankcase in the factory on some of there saws. I have an 042 and that is case with it.
Nice to see that a woman can take an interest in mechanical devices and become proficient in them. Even takes pride in Her work. Does a better job than some men.
I don’t know who you are. But you are definitely an amazing person with saws. My grandfather had a bunch of old rusty saws and if I could’ve found you about 9 years ago. I would’ve shipped them to you and let you do your magic on them. You are awesome my man
I made it 1 min in. After watching him separating nailed boards with a screwdriver, I knew this would be a colossal waste of time. A quick peek at comments vindicates that decision. And why in the holy hell would they think its a good idea to not edit out that crap? I hate these faux restoration channels. Gives the good ones a bad name.
From the start as he started to unscrew the screws... they vere not only brand new but also too easy to unscrew. Am i the only one here? I think its fake as fuck. If you've ever tried to unscrew something that rusty NO WAY it would be that easy, more than likely you would've need to cut it off. The - screw with so rusty bolt ? It would been destroyed even trying to do it. The old rusty spark plug? NO WAY it would've been unscrewed in 1 peace THAT EASY. Because again from the shaft to the end of the plug it was new.
That's a pretty impressive set of tools going on there for $10,000.00, especially the sensitive paint brush and tweezers for dis-assembly work, at least it's warm in Asia and you need not worry about freezing temps affecting your cleaning chemicals.
Yeah the 10k is probably a lie or mistranslation, however the screws are not. I’ve torn apart plenty of of these going back to the 50’s model. If he pre lubbed it for days prior that seems reasonable. Out of hundreds I’ve only had a couple I had to re-tap
After seeing this he doesn't deserve to push a broom. Made this old mechanic want to vomit. 150 minutes is flatrate for 💯 complete rebuild including test run, very easily done, but not like this
I'm no restoration expert..but this fella did a fantastic job.. Money aside... Job well done. In my opinion STIHL makes the best chainsaws out there and this guy just bought one back from the dead. There's something Very therapeutic about watching these restoration videos. Job well done man.
Amazing, rust everywhere, but all the screws and nuts come off just like they were recently greased. I work on a lot of rust and I wish all would come apart as easily..
With rusted screws you cannot use an electric driver like is done in this video, they would strip right away!.They must be done by hand with a hammer torque driver !.
my comment was the same as yours before i read your comment, same here 1000% i work on rusted stuff just about everyday and it sucks, lube torch impact yeap it sucks trying to get stuff apart here around saltwater
Friend Why do you not fully clean the parts? If you go to the trouble to sand blast the parts why go only part way and then bury the rust and grime under the paint?
😂 right like I know most people don’t know what a raker is nor how to properly sharpen a chain but if your bragging about a restoration then you should do it right .
Most people familiar with stihl realize this isn't that old of a saw. Look at the gas and oil caps their from the newer saw's. No Mistake the guy did a great job restoring it.
Good clean work, but little dissapointed he didn't repair the piston walls and piston itself. Could of spot welded the gaps and then turned the piston. And didn't even attempt to use the old carb. Could of cleaned it up with a sonic clean solution. Of course using a fresh carb and piston it's gonna work.
I love watching people fix up vintage stuff like this. Its crazy to see how power tools have evolved through the years! And like I've seen people say on here, ignore the haters. I doubt most of them could do what you do and even less could make these things function like new.
@anthonywheeler133 the flip top caps have been around for over 15 years now. I d0nt care for em, prefer the screw in one's myself my 066 and 044 still have them but my 461's I buy one every year (timber faller in oregon) have had the flip caps for at least 15 years.
Most of them are right. I restore antique tractors and equipment. While entertaining, the execution on this was very amateur level. I expected so much better when I clicked this.

agree, the rubber and plastic was still pliable with no cracks, no stuck bolts or screws, no internal rust. Heck the plugs even looked fairly clean.
He could have sent it to Iron Horse and got a hot rod that would last his lifetime for that money and that old man would appreciate the money.
That's just a lightly used saw that they sprayed with salt water and mud for a couple of weeks.
Ill take: 'Things that never actually happend' for $10,000 Alex!

Lays and Pringles are too different things lays stax are lays version of pringles style chips
Fun fact, most stihl saws and powertools are now made in Virginia Beach, although a few parts still come from Austria and Germany
Why watch then? Who gives a shit where it came from. Was a great restoration.

So satisfying
The chain is completely gone the chips on the floor show that the gullets have to be filed down also, according to the size of the cutting teeth, and the RPMs are not nowhere near where they’re supposed to be
Paint on the inside of the engine? How long will that last before flaking and causing a catastrophe?
Yeah I was tripping out too, that can’t be good for the internals…….wtf!?😮
The last thing to worry, all these engines are painted inside....with the right paint of course!
and hot glue to secure the badge on. im taking bets on what will catch on fire first, or fall off...
For a person with little to no mechanical aptitude, I really enjoyed watching this restoration. Chickens in the background gave it that organic touch.
Rusted nuts and screws don't remove that easy. This is click bait.
This is botched

Got an idea for a video spray, salt water on something leave it outside for a month and then “” revive it
I’ll have to think about that, that’s a good idea!
The kind of restauration where even the plastics get rusty...😂
All sprayed with some rustic acid to look old.
Was not just me who thought that then lol 😂
I watched that whole thing! What's wrong with me?

Finished product looks like a Chinese clone, off colors. I’d rather have one of the Frankenstein saws I put together from parts..
The consistent patina of everything he repairs is very much like those home shopping channel cleaning shows.
The lack of prep for almost every single application of paint was upsetting

Why do you not fully clean the parts? If you go to the trouble to sand blast the parts why go only part way and then bury the rust and grime under the paint?

Excellent restoration job! While I see you used a different chain, I would have swapped it out also. The old chain was used up. Looks awesome! 👍
