      If you didn't understand the question then you are truly stupid or someone who is on the wrong side of the question because the question was about how certain humans would be treated if others got their way. Bill pretty much answered it tho. He called Trump supporters carnival people. The left sees us as dumb and uneducated as you can tell by the woman calling the left "intellectuals" so how do you think Trump supporters would be treated if the left got their way.

    • @theman1860
      @theman1860 4 роки тому +12

      @@thevideogamearchive. repost: First of, Dr. Peterson is famously right leaning (he admits it) but his point, was that the conversation between the left and the right is becoming more destructive/dysfunctional. His point was, even though you don't agree with a group of people, you still have to live with them (you share a country). So, what do you do with the disaffected 40% of the people who voted for Trump after he's impeached/convicted or whatever? Even though they may like him for the wrong reasons, they are still left alone in the dark. This would eventually lead to them only digging their heels in (fake news, climate change is bogus, faith is the corner stone of the constitution, etc...). This would in turn, make the left dig their heels in even further by alienating a big portion of the population because they don't see them as individuals who have lost faith in the system, they see them as far right idiots (group identities usually remove the humanity from the equation). Regardless of your feelings towards either party or any particular political affiliation, this is an important question to ask because the consequences could be catastrophic if not dealt with (according to Dr. Peterson).

    • @antipsychosoup6709
      @antipsychosoup6709 4 роки тому +29

      @@theman1860 You are right, it is a really important question. Dr. Peterson is NOT "famously right leaning" and has never admitted anything of the sort. Rather, he has adamantly rejected that notion and claims himself to be a classical liberal and traditionally on the left, but asserts that the modern left has moved dangerously too far left, to the point of radicalization.
      Your statement is illustrative of a common misconception, especially by young people. I voted for Obama in 2008 and if I'd been asked then to place myself on the political spectrum I would have been squarely left-of-center. My beliefs and values have evolved since then, but really only to the degree that I understand where they come from better - the core hasn't shifted that much at all. However, the political spectrum has changed so much since then that now by default I would be labeled conservative or "a right-winger", even though I still consider myself fairly liberal, because I disagree with a lot from the radical left that is quickly becoming the mainstream. Obama endorsed things like the need for secure borders and stopping illegal immigration, protecting freedom of speech, and fatherlessness being the biggest social problem in America. Those are all now right-leaning positions (and usually referred to as alt-right by the left). The left now says that securing the border is racist, speech they disagree with should be silenced, and that racism is our biggest social problem.
      Peterson is not saying that the 40% need to be considered, even if they like Trump for the wrong reasons. He's saying that there are many in that 40% who aren't in there because they actually like Trump, but because they dislike the political shift that has happened on the left that has placed them in the "Trump-camp" by default, and that the involuntary reversal of the election of Trump would be another step toward a tyrannical takeover by a radical leftist ideology that they abhor, which is what will lead to catastrophe.

      True she shut his entire argument down. He's not wrong about the disturbing level of political correctness the left has reached but he's a very triggered person and he's reasoning is nothing short of what most xenophobic and anti-socialist conservatives are using. He kept contradicting his own statements especially at the "5:29" time frame where he said it was two different issues when the core factor is still the same which is illumination. She proved there that he clearly had a "my truth is the only truth" mentality which he clearly deems a mindset of the less developed. When in reality it is correct the democratic mistakes are nature defying atrocities but the conservative ones "which are not farther effective then their's at large" are merely nothing but dark dots in their progress of building an exclusive, secluded, and very war mongering entity which is a dictatorship. Which is what professor Peterson ever so desperately longs for.

      Can you really expect an honest answer from ideologues when the question asks them to be critical of tribalism?
      The answers were entirely predictable:

      C) Trump supporters aren't enlightened like us and we need to show them the way (Frank Bruni)

      C) We're elite and can't expect others to be as smart and conscious as us (Frank Bruni)

      Its not the responsibility of the educated people in society to abandon knowledge to meet you where objective truth ends and your ignorance begins. If you think the world is 5,000 years old, and deny science, that doesn't mean that we have to meet you in the fantasy that you live in. What it means is the society has failed it's people by failing to educate them, and reinforcing ignorance to preserve corporate profitability.
      The problem with the right isn't their beliefs, it's that their beliefs become political issues bc their lack of education allows them to be easily mislead by politicians who tell them what to think but aren't honest on why they tell them this, usually money.
      Big Tobacco told people smoking didn't cause cancer and lobbied republicans to peddle the lie until it became untenable. We have hard evidence that climate change is caused by man, yet uneducated people believe it's a hoax, not because they have looked at the science and decided it is unpersuasive, but because they are uneducated, ignorant and get told what to think by their politicians, church leaders and far right propagandists. They usually have an interest but they lie with no conscious to keep people giving money to their church or allowing corporations to poison people bc it's profitable.
      Republicans are unique bc their voters do things that cause their own poverty and strife, then blame minorities bc the right thinks 'identity politics' is something the Left does, like Peterson here, when that ignorant position is blind to the fact that the right has created it's entire platform on identity. Us vs Them, with them being anything, Muslims, Mexicans, Blacks, Liberals, Gays, Jews, Globalists, Media, The Elites, Communists, socialists. Anyone whose not white, Christian, republican and nationalist is not a part of their identity, which shapes their entire political belief system, yet they still say the left is identity politicking.
      It's not the burden of the educated on the left to dismiss things they have learned are objectively verifiable truths just bc many uneducated people don't believe them and want to believe what someone like Trump tells them.

      I listened to the whole thing again very carefully, because I found her point initially interesting, and thought she might have a good one, however what it came down to was Wagner always being on the offensive, trying to win a battle only she saw, ignoring context, and misrepresenting claims by both Maher and Peterson. The things she said both of them said, they didn't say, and she baited them into appearing as if they did say it and neither ever had enough time to form a proper reply deconstructing the mess she made.
      Wagner also seemed to integrate the issues and believe they were stated to be mutually exclusive. They are not, and they were not presented as such. The left can be very contemptuous of the right and still have a misguided movement of sheltering other people, primarily sorting these people into a group identity, and claiming it is in their best interest as a group to shield them from offense.

      Simon Goligher Peterson a liberal? Come on. How many liberals have the likes of Mike Cernovich and Paul Joseph Watson as huge fans and supporters of theirs? The only "liberals" that tend to fall into that category are the type that refer to themselves as "classical liberals". Which interestingly is something Peterson does (although he calls himself "classical British liberal"). But those people tend to be easy to spot. The call themselves liberal but they rarely if ever have anything negative to say about Trump. They hate feminism. They hate so-called "political correctness" and "SJW's". They hate identity politics. But despite that, their primary fan base is white conservative males. I wonder why such a specific group is attracted to such a message from a "liberal"? It's almost like they're attracted to identity politics.
      Oh, and they also don't understand the first amendment even though they claim to love it so much. That's a really common one for conservatives in general.

    I think Jordan Peterson was doing a roundabout slap at Maher (who is always mocking the supporters of Trump) and Wagner (who was an anchor of her own show which berated the right). Inslee of course is going to be partisan since he is a politician (listen to him tooting his own horn). Bruni gently supported Peterson (who is so smart that he is somewhat disjointed in his delivery). I think the point that Peterson is making is that the left has a twofold problem: 1) political correctness which does not allow for criticism or discussion; and 2) a virulent hatred for anyone that disagrees with their agenda .

    • @johnpliskin8759

    • @MrRhomas913
      @MrRhomas913 6 років тому +1

      @John Pliskin
      I doubt if the right can be categorized as politically correct. Anyhow it is the left that controls the universities (look at how they do not want to let Ben Shapiro, Ann Coulter, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, or even Richard Dawkins speak), nearly all the large cities with crime problems are run by the left (Chicago, Cleveland, Baltimore, St Louis...etc and they dare not mention that half the nation's murders are committed by blacks), and the left constantly conflates illegal immigrants with legal immigrants (or should I say "undocumented") - notice how CNN branded Trump as anti-immigrant even though he ran against illegal immigrants and not legal immigrants.
      The only way to counter bad speech is with good speech not the prevention of speech. We have to let nazis speak so we can debunk them (which is simple to do) and not let them become mythic underdogs which are appealing to the disaffected. Ditto with Muslims, the press is too timid and does not dare mention that Salafis are following their Islamic texts for fear of offending the "liberal" muslim population in the US (the usual Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper line "I know a Muslim, he does not want to kill me" meme). The press does not mention that the mainstream population is unable to absorb and endless stream of poor, uneducated Spanish-speaking migrants and how that affects communities and employment.

Anyone who's spent any significant amount of time listening to him knows that he takes time to make the point. He provides the context, the point, and then the implications. Sometimes not necessarily in that order, but anyone with a reasonable degree of patience would understand that. Before he had a chance to elaborate on the question, he was interrupted. He was out of his element here, it didn't do him any credit that he was being challenged by someone who's very existence is defined by the ability to spoon feed the intellectual equivalent of baby food to people who's awareness of the cultural history of the world goes back to what they vaguely remember learning about in high school. Regarding the contradiction itself, she has a point. The problem is she's not hearing good question coming from an academic who's spent the better part of his life studying the rise and fall of cultures throughout history, she's hearing the question come from an ideological enemy. So she responded as such, and such was her error.

    What I like here is how the way Bill talks to Jordan about Jordan's question. It's thoughtful, speaks from facts, and he makes great points with some small jabs. I feel like this is exactly what Jordan is wanting to hear from the Left in the way they would talk to the Right. When it comes to Jay, he sounds a lot more like the far Right in which he expresses his determination for getting what he wants. Bill doesn't do that. And I think the difference there is immeasurably important. No one, especially those who are raised to be sensitive in the way Jordan and Bill say most Americans are, wants to be called stupid. Most of the time when people are attacked to the core of their beliefs and called stupid before they have been able to defend themselves, they get more stubborn. The only result I can see from that is what we have today: riots, constant bickering, isolation into one's own beliefs, overall hatred for those who don't agree with one another. It's just not a way of solving. No one will be convinced that they should check themselves and their beliefs and who they support by people calling them stupid. We're just tearing each other apart senslessly now.

      Alex Wagner asked a perfectly reasonable question and I was disappointed that Prof Peterson dodged, this whole conversation and the other video shows just how dimwitted and insecure he is politically and even with his own societal philosophy outside of his main subject matter he teaches in Uni (Christianity and western society). If Bill Maher wasn't there to defuse and deflect with humor Wagner would of eaten him and his circular rhetoric alive, Peterson owes Bill big time. The fact he couldn't defend why he doesn't like when the left "coddles" by using proper gender and identity terms but why the left should be coddle trump supporters because their so fucking emotional if the united states judicial process finds Trump impeachable we should prepare for their tantrum is the most fucking retarded thing i've heard on this show and i watched the Steve Bannon episode. Its funny to see Petersons patreon supporters on here arguing that he was in fact "so enlightened intellectually" that the other panel participants couldn't understand him when the idiot fucking repeated the same retarded line of thought 3 times. These are the same people who think watching rick and morty means their IQ is high. Domestic Terror, Mass Shootings, Hate Crimes, and the like have already gone up since Trump got elected. And, the data shows that an overwhelming percentage of it (in the 90th percentile) is committed by people who support right wing ideology. _The alt right, NeoNazis, the KKK, MAGAists, lash out even when they get their way._
      In other words, Trump supporters commit more violent acts of domestic terror and hate crimes already. So, what? Are we supposed to worry about them committing even more if he's impeached? I don't think so. I imagine they may do so, since these people commit more hate crimes when their mascot emboldens them, then perhaps they'll do more if he's their martyr due to impeachment or indictment. Yet. the nation has survived worse and will again.
      The bigger issue is re-building our democracy which his admin is systematically dismantling according to the Putin playbook. We can't unseat these radical, right wing, extremists from their federal judgeships, but we can uproot the fascists from all other positions in government and hopefully restore confidence in our elections by making federal standards applicable for voting machines, paper ballot backups etc.

I'm not saying Republicans have it all figured out but at least most of us are willing to discuss it - Democrats, by and large, seem to think thy are simply "right" by virtue of being a Democrat.

      Nalgas: I don't think a lot of people have thought about that. Just for the record, I am not a Trump fan. On the other hand, Peterson talked about Trump supporters as though they were children who couldn't find their way inside from the rain or something. I don't really think they need protecting, they are adults who made a choice. Half the country thinks it's the wrong choice, but I don't think they need protection for the choice they made and the consequences of the choice.
      Also for the record, I am NOT in favor of an impeachment. It destroys a country to do that and I'm not sure we need that now. Let it play out, whether it's over in 2020 or 2024, it needs to play out. That is how our system is supposed to work.

    Alex Wagner's mental gymnastic about what she believe is Peterson being an hypocrite is false. Because its an oversimplification of Peterson's critic of the left to say that it is about, on the one hand, them being too concerned about offending, and the other, them not being enough concerned about it.
    Its not simply about offending the trump supporters, its about negating their concerns. If mainstream media and academia (which tilt champagne socialist) continues to ignore the working class concerns (unemployment, immigration, etc...) then its obvious that further cynicism and polarization would occur. And in the worst case, extreme right-wing movements. Its about the alienation of 40% of the US population, not about offence.

      There's already a war. No wonder the mainstream right has been losing all these years.

      tl;dr: Peterson isn't an advocate of either side, he just wants to avoid the violence and civil unrest within the US that becomes ever more likely with each passing day as both ends of the political spectrum become increasingly radical.
      Hypocrisy doesn't factor into it. Peterson was talking about the fact that there's great polarisation towards the extreme ends of the political spectrum within America today, he was pointing out quite subtly to a panel of vehemently anti-Trump supporter types that this is a dumb and suicidal move.
      The 40% that approve of Trump won't disappear when he's out of office and those 40% are more heavily armed, strategically better positioned across the United States and are far more experienced (given especially that the majority of the military and police force are among that 40%) than their opposition.
      The lefts current shortsighted tactic of attacking and dehumanising Trump supporters only encourages further polarisation as Trump Supporters are all too happy to respond with dehumanisation in kind, at this rate violence is inevitable in the near future.
      This is what Jordan Peterson was highlighting which the rest of the panel was trying to dance around acknowledging, the lefts only chance to avoid future violence and survive as a political entity within America (because whenever it comes down to violence both sides race to the extremes, for the left this means helicopter rides en masse given the aforementioned massive advantage that the American right will have in a civil war scenario) at this point is to try to reconcile differences with Trump supporters in an effort to recentre politics but they're too prideful, stubborn and frankly stupid to do that.

Calling him a dictator, saying “He can’t stop us.” None of that has anything to do with Jordan’s point, and was just word bait for applause from the liberal audience.

    "Talk to them with more generosity..." Here's what's interesting. This kind of conversation goes on among people on the left. You see it right here--and elsewhere, on message boards. Once I saw two fellow liberals discussing this--how we liberals need to be more respectful to those on the other side, how it's not helpful if we're as rude, we need to reach out to them, and so on. Then right in the middle of their conversation, a conservative dropped a nasty "Libtard" bomb--with a vile rude comment. I've even had fellow liberals criticize me for being too negative and critical toward conservatives--and I have never resorted to name-calling, or calling someone "stupid" or a "snowflake". I just needed to be more respectful--they told me.
    We on the left, it is true, can be disrespectful, uncivil, rude--too. But we HAVE this conversation! We agonize over it--and try. We try. There will be discussions like what you see here. I have NEVER once since about the start of Obama's administration seen a group of conservatives self-critique, and talk about how conservatives needed to treat liberals with more respect, and how the vile dialogue is not helpful. Never.

      I have perfectly civil debates with both sides, playing contrarian, challenging their views. I’ve only once experienced bat shit crazy ganging up on me, and that was by the regressive lefties.
      In my experience, conservatives are much more polite and respectful once you treat them respectfully, show that you listen to their arguments and try to understand their point of view. Seriously. I can walk into a barbecue, announce that I’m a vegetarian, take some initial abuse, and 15 minutes later I’ll get the group to agree that we should all eat less meat and be kinder to animals. I have debates with bible pushers ending in them acknowledging that atheism does not imply immorality. But walking up to left wingers and suggesting that there is a problem with Islam that we have to acknowledge if we want equal rights and safety for women, wow.
      YMMV.
