North Wales 2021 Vlog 21 Betws-y-Coed, Porthmadog, Criccieth

- We reveal where we managed to park for the night and head into Betws-y-Coed in search of breakfast.
We stop for a drone flight at Dolwyddelan Castle and a coffee break on the Crimea Pass on the way to Blaenau Ffestiniog.
There are no steam trains running so we head on to Porthmadog for a walk around the town and a lovely ice-cream.
Driving on to Criccieth we stop to admire the view before enjoying an Indian meal at the Spice Bank restaurant.

Congrats Ken and Carol on hitting 10k subs, really enjoying this wee trip with you around North Wales. Seeing that carpark in Bets y coed reminded me I was there 1972 on a coach heading to Monmouth for my 1st summer camp with the scouts. 50 years later ive now have a tent and ive had my 1st outing, just me and Judy dog, onwards and upwards. Keep up the good work and enjoy your hols.
Thanks Stephen 👍Sounds great, enjoy your camping with Judy 😀
Another enjoyable video Ken. We love your calm commentary and think you have a real talent in videography. Keep them coming!
Thanks Peter 🙂
That was so uplifting, you kept making me laugh! Those ice creams looked very yummy indeed. What a wonderful tour through such beautiful places. Thanks both. X

Ahoy Pirates! Congratulations on the very well-deserved 10k subscribers! Keep going, dear folks! Thanks for this cute and beautiful piece! Always enjoying your adventures! It's been a while now since I subscribed and feels like knowing you two for a lifetime! Started with Ireland adventures, which I am re-watching from time to time! :) Bear hugs, Captain of the good old Blackthorne
Thank you very much Kata. We feel like we know you too from all your comments. Thanks for your continuing support. Take care 😀
Hi Ken and Carol, great video. Porthmadog looked a lovely place to visit. Liked the way you had the drone footage coming in from the sea showing all the colourful houses and landing smoothly near your van. Very skilled.
Thanks Martin 👍 Porthmadog is a great area. Plenty to do nearby and close to Snowdonia National Park.
I really enjoyed this trip it brought back memories of our trip to the area a few years ago
Glad you enjoyed it and we could bring back some happy memories for you 🙂👍
Great video, bringing back lots of childhood memories of holidays spent in North Wales 🏴🧶🌈🍓
Glad you enjoyed it Jenny 🙂

Enjoyed that vlog. Think Graham was envious of Ken’s ice cream. Curry looked good too. Beautiful scenery. Well done getting to 10,000 👍E🧙♂️
Thanks Ellie and Graham. We can confirm the ice cream and curry were both very good indeed 👍🙂
That was a real hunt for breakfast🥪😳. Great video, beautiful drone shots. What I noticed is how clean all those places look, a pleasure to watch, thanks for sharing👍

Always love your videos and love Wales,I keep going there been few times this year and stayed few weeks at a time.
Thanks Richard. Hope we did Wales proud. We love going there too 😀
Good to see that you made up later for missing out on a pukka brekkie! The curry looked delicious. Some interesting drone flying going on lately, love it 👍
Thanks Sue. The curry was great 😋
I spent a night in Betws-y-Coed over 40years ago in a little hi-ace campervan. Well done Ken for catching how beautiful north Wales is.
Thanks Frank. Glad you enjoyed it.
Good to see the weather improved for you after leaving Anglesey. Enjoying your mix of scenery and informative highlights. Our favourite channel, never miss an episode. We love that part of Wales having stayed in Porthmadog many times when the kids were young. Well done on reaching 10k.
Thank you guys for your support and lovely comments 😀
I should mention I have the same fun as Carole when visiting HSBC. Even worse, I live in Fife where no HSBC exists!
Thank u for sharing Yr travels
@@joannenash1247 you’re welcome 🙂
Love the music and you sure had nice weather on this one.
Thanks Larry. The nice weather was most welcome 🙂
Absolutely fabulous, thank you, we spent a wonderful two weeks in North Wales in 2019, stayed at Black Rock Sands caravan park near Criccieth. You can park on the stunning beach there for the day and at that time you could park overnight. We enjoyed all the places you showed us, was just beautiful to see it from the air too ❤
Thanks Wendy, glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Great job guys really enjoyed the mix of the video on this - some fantastic drone shots and clarity of composition / insight into your travels at a personal level / facts. Pissed squirrel classic lol. That Indian looked a great meal … albeit there seemed a lot of it lol - stay safe and superb 10k achievement on subs well deserved - we both said you are flying and smashing it out the park with quality and interest
Thanks Stew and Jane, glad you are enjoying the content. That Indian meal was well within our appetite level 😂
Put my feet up and watched another great video after long day of canning corn and making pickles and dehydrating tomatoes. It’s that busy time of year putting food up for the long winter here in Wisconsin
Thanks Marie. Hope we helped you to relax at the end of a busy day 😊
Hello from Ireland. We are hoping to head over to Wales in a few weeks time. We always enjoy your videos. My 12 yo son spent 2 months in hospital last year. Watching your videos and looking forward to getting back out in our camper kept us going. You reminded us that very soon we would be back on the road again, out and about, enjoying the simple pleasures the world has to offer. He's doing well now, life is getting back to normal. So thanks to you both.
Thank you for letting us know Ivan, that is such a heart warming comment. Hope your son makes a good recovery and you are soon back out in your camper enjoying life. Take care 🙂
Great local roads to us. We still love exploring them. Penmachno roads my favourite xxx
It is a beautiful area 👍🙂
I’m really impressed with the level of research you’ve undertaken to produce this episode. The connection with Waterloo and Betwys I believe is the first bridge was opened/build in the year of the battle. There is a big plaque on the river side of the bridge giving date and if i remember the is also a coat of arms.Great Video as always thanks for sharing your travels.
Thanks for the info. We thought there had to be a connection somewhere 🙂
Brilliant as usual.. Smithy would be proud of that bhuna lol..
👍😁
That squirrel 🤣. Great vid, you had a real spring in your step on this one and deserved the curry after the breakfast disappointment.
Thanks Mike. I’ll take any excuse to deserve a curry 😁👍
Congrats on the 10,000 subs well deserved.
Thank you so much Anthony 😀
Phew! We covered a lot of ground there. Brilliant. My heart skipped a beat when I saw from the bridge leaving Betws that we were on our way to Dolwyddelan, and congratulations on your 'th' for the Welsh 'dd' sound. I love that place and the immediate area, so thank dronie for the great aspect of the castle with Moel Siabod looking magnificent in the background. I shall make a screenshot of that, if that's ok? Prince Charles painted the castle as one of a set of British Castles that appeared on commemorative postage stamps in the '80s. Love the rest of the route too. You could have given a little plug for the Llechwedd slate quarry/mine just before the drop into Blaenau. Well worth looking up and visiting. This is a clip that I shall be revisiting soon. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Peter. OK to take a screenshot for your personal use 👍 Didn’t know that about the stamps, will have to look them up. We did visit the Llechwedd slate quarry on a previous trip and did the tour. It was very interesting 😀
Really enjoying your videos, You deserved that curry after missing out on breakfast. Great shots and scenery.
Thanks Tina 🙂
Lovely video......
Loved the music.💜👍
Thanks John 🙂
Hi guys,
Another great little video. A very beautiful part of the country, enjoyed watching this.
Me Mom was from Wales, Abergavaney” don’t think my spelling is correct, anyway you
Continue to bring parts of the UK into my living room in Ca and I thank you for that.
Looking forward to your next video. Stay safe and stay healthy
Mik.🚗🚗🚘
Thanks Mik. Glad you are enjoying the videos.
Hi Carol and Ken, look like that bridge was constructed during the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Since its completion its had some strengthening works applied to them, I suppose for modern day vehicle loading. As a structural engineer, it's wonderful to see beautiful cast iron bridges are still being maintained. Really adds to the wonderful aesthetic of North Wales
Thanks for the info Will. Yes, great to see the bridge still in use after more than two hundred years.
Thank you again for your loverly video ,always a pleasure to watch . I have spent a good few holidays in North Wales, touring in a caravan years ago and more recently bed and breakfast and self catering . Well done for tackling the pronounciations of the welsh places . I am from South Wales and can find some hard to pronounce . Its worth visiting some of the historic attractions Bodnant gardens National trust owned would have been worth it . Also Llanberis Slate musuem owned by the National museum of Wales also Electric mountain in Llanberis fascinating ,you go in a little bus into the mountain after an introuduction in the visitors centre and shown how they produce electricity .Fom where you are go further along the Llyn peninsula to visit some of the loverly bays and go to the tip along the pilgrims route to see across to Barnsey Island where they use to go to . So many places mid and South wales you could be there for many more weeks if you wanted to visit it all , or make it another holiday out of high season
Thanks for all those tips Gaynor. We tried to get tickets for Bodnant Gardens but they were sold out when we were there. We will have to go back another time and see more 🙂
I’ve only recently came across your channel and I’m so glad I have found you! Your vlogs are magnificent. Lovely to watch your adventures and hints and tips along the way. :)
Thanks so much CJ. Glad you enjoy the videos 😊
don't forget to check out the entire catalog... I love to see all the places they have been... I am eager to see them visit some places in the van that they did with the camper... hint hint lol
soo I will consider that a possiblity lol
@@thebairdhaslanded yes I’m catching up on the heading west travels as we are away going from Poole to Weymouth and Sidmouth next week! Hopefully there will be no floods! 😬
luv video
always luv the views and scenery.
I myself don't like hot and spicy foods, but im glad you enjoyed.
stay safe.🙂
Thanks Moira. We do enjoy a good curry 🙂👍
Had to replay your comment about the squirrel a couple of times, very funny 😁👍🏻
😂👍
Very enjoyable vlog 👍🍺😁
Cheers Matthew 🙂👍
All the places I went as a kid 57 now living in Australia thx you
Hope we brought back some good memories for you Donald. Thanks for watching 🙂
Great video, not sure about Betws but some great breakfast options for your next trip a bit further on : Lakeside in Tan y Grisiau, Spooners in Porthmadog, Jennys in Porthmadog, breaktimes in Porthmadog, iris cafe in Criccieth, tir y mor in Criccieth or Number 46 in Criccieth to name but a few!!
Thanks for all the suggestions Dan 😀👍
Your drone filming is really improving well done!!
How on earth does the lovely Carol keep her figure? She is forever eating!!!
Thanks Roy. The camera must just catch her every time she puts food in her mouth 😁
Fantastic music at the end!
Thanks James 🙂👍
Yes need to keep the windows clean, although ours have always got dirty marks on them! We drove through Blaunea Ffestiniog but didn't stop unfortunately. Such beautiful scenery on these roads. Not been to Porthmadog so will have to put it on the list. 10,000 subscribers. Amazing. Well done. Girl after my own heart. I love ice cream lol.
Thanks Helen and Karl. We’re always amazed how beautiful the roads are in this area. The ice cream was very good 😊
@@LifeistooshortCK we will try some when we get there!
Great cafe in Blanaeu by the festiniog railway line great breakfast.
We will have to remember that one for next time 👍🙂
We’re off to Betws this week. Looks gorgeous.
Enjoy 😀👍
Carol and Ken what a beautiful part of north Wales just stunning ..and what a lovely couple you are so down to earth 😀 .as I have suffered with mental health since the age of 12 and now im 56 it's been a hard life at times but my dream of a motor home will hopefully come true if i can afford when I retire at 61 , i don't want to work untill 67 ,i need to live and make memories with my partner that's my dream anyway 😀 thanks for the video
Thanks for your lovely comment nidge. You certainly have the right attitude that life is for living and making memories. I hope it all goes well for you and you can retire early and get your motorhome. Best wishes to you both 😀
18th Century Roads. At least in width. Not even a "Rotten Ronald"s" in he whole place? Supper looked very filling. Great scenic shots.
We did enjoy the curry 😋 Thanks for watching 👍
Parking within the edge of the forest is amazing, luckily you found the place, it seems like not enough parking for camper vans in Snowdonia erea.
There are several campsites but we prefer to wild camp. They certainly don’t like you parking your campervan in the car parks near the mountains.
May be too late, but Portmeirion is worth a visit, fabulously quirky architecture, where the old “Prisoner” tv series was filmed, we loved it!
Yes we went to Portmeirion in 2008. Great place 👍🙂
Hi guys them curries looked delicious
Hi Nigel. The curry was very good 👍 😋
Ok..
1.. I am loving the geography of the recent content... really helps me understand why the Welsh were able to cause problems for the English during the early era of conflicts with the swords etc..
2. yeah we also have an interesting time finding good food in the morning from something local instead of a McDonald's... due to Covid many places just are not as open as early as they used to... many have totally skipped the breakfast window all together.. in part due to the hard time just finding help... let alone consistent business
Thanks Chad. It must be very hard for the restaurants to keep after suffering the lockdowns. I think there must also be a lot of regulations set by the government that they have to abide by that makes it difficult to go back to how it was before.
Lovely. Our house was called Betwys y Coed.
How lovely 😀
What a shame you didn’t go for a little stroll along the river and falls while you were in Betws-y-coed . It’s a gentle walk straight from the main road across the little bridge and wouldn’t have taken long at all . It would have been so peaceful too at that time of the morning . Lovely filming though. Safe travels x👍😊
Yes, that would have been a lovely walk. We only walked across the bridge 🙂
Congrats on 10000 subscribers
Thanks so much Neil 🙏
Tip for you Ken just point the camera at a sign & say this is where we are, you don't want to upset the Welsh do you!! Watching your video's always makes me hungry, can't think why!! 🤣👍😁
Thanks for that tip, sounds like a great idea 😁
Can understand your problem with the pronunciation of Welsh names, but believe me as Welsh, it's annoying. Forgive you both anyway as you both seemed to enjoy your time here.
Lovely views and historical content as usual. Ken, your Welsh pronunciations are excellent. Ever thought of doing some of Carol's "on the go" food recipies, they look yummy?
Love the channel, but his pronounciations are terrible! don't give him false hope!
@@andyh6849 To be fair, Ken nailed Dolwyddelan, as he did Beddgelert in a previous video. It's slightly unfair to expect 'foreigners' magically to be able to pronounce words from an unfamiliar language. Nevertheless, "Betsy Coid" - ych a fi!
Still working on the pronunciation Ted but thanks for the compliment ☺️
The Welch countryside once again is just stunning, along with the towns and village's.
It's such a shame about the parking, and the locals who give you a hard time for parking up.
Ps are you guys still eating the ice cream 😂😂
They were rather large but delicious and we had no trouble eating the lot 😁
Very nice place.
Thanks 🙂
Porthmadog is delightful…better and better videos. Thank you 😊
Thank you Michele. Glad you like them 🙂
Salted caramel my favourite Ken. Carol how do you stay so slim after breakfast baps and ice-creams? Great video again, beautiful views.
The ice creams were lunch 😊 Thanks Michelle 😀
Pleased you found somewhere to stay and Ken, you have my vote on the ice cream flavours.. Would you believe, I made cupcakes today.. Half salted caramel and half strawberry.. How spooky is that!!
Woah, that is spooky! Bet those cupcakes were delicious 😋
@@LifeistooshortCK they're in the freezer to stop us eating them all at once lol
Congratulations on the 10400 subscribers,
I wonder how many hours you have spent filming planning editing and uploading over the last couple of years?
Anyway THANKS for all the hours of entertainment. Ed.
Thanks Ed. It has been many many hours but we both enjoy it, especially when we get such lovely comments 😊👍
We were in Betws-y-Coed last Saturday. Were dropping the motor home off for our son and his girlfriend to use after a week near Barmouth ourselves. They were booked in at the Riverside site and after we set things up for them, went to the cafe in the old train carriages opposite the railway station for a late lunch. The food was good, not over-priced and there was plenty of it. Staff were friendly too which is always a bonus. Lovely little town, wish we could've stayed but had to get home................
Sounds like you had a great time. We are hoping to go to Barmouth next time we are in that area 😊
How nicely put the comment to the huuuuge ice cream of your wife. You're a real gentleman.:)
A great vid loved all the amazing places you have been well done to your 10,0000 subs I only got 28 all the best donny
Thanks Donny 😊👍
Cracking series of vids guys, their bringing back some nice memories. I have a daughter who lives in Colwyn Bay so know the area. If I may ask,, the music that was playing just as you nearly hit the pigeon,, what was it please. BIG congrats for the 10,000,,,,,,,
Thanks Roland. One of my favourite tracks that one. DuDa by Ian Post 👍
Betws also has a bridge across the River Conwy. This one, made of cast iron, was built in 1815, the year of the Battle of Waterloo.
Thanks for the info Julie 👍🙂
Another good un. Keep them coming, bet you have forgotten where you live by now! How many days out to date?? Andy.
Thanks Andrew. The North Wales trip was 24 nights in total.
I think the horns were going off due to the silver van being very dangerously perched virtually still on road you guys were at least tucked in a bit .....
If you head back to Betws Y Coed, you can stay in the swallow falls carpark for £10 which includes electric and showers/toilets 👍🏼
That’s good to know for next time, thanks 🙂👍
Lovely vlog Ken x Carol “Pissed Squirrel” 😂😂 LOL Too many Guinness ehh x Your both struggle like me with those Welsh 🏴 name Tongue Twisters . I got told off a few times 🥲🥲🤭 👍 x SMALL Small ?? Well what a Whopaa Carol 😜🍦🍦x Very Tasty m mmm x ATB hugs Stephen 😘👍👊👊
Cheers Stephen. Still getting the Welsh names wrong but happy to be corrected 😁 Those ice creams were delicious and who could choose only one flavour 😂 Looking forward to your next adventure, take care 😀🚗🚐👍
on a more positive -note l did give the thumbs up to nearly all your videos:-)
Thanks for that it really helps 👍
The Waterloo Bridge was named thus because it was built in the same year the battle was fought. Thomas Telford the engineer who built it, was most famous for his suspension bridge across the Menai Straights in the same concerted effort to improve the A5 road from London to Holyhead. All roadworks and improvements along the A5 came to a halt following the opening of the railways over the next 100 years and only restarted once they were decimated by Beeching in the 1960s.
What a lovely snippet of history. I had never made the connection of the railways killing road development at the time. I wonder where we would be if Beeching had not made those cuts? The cost if Rail travel today is one of many more recent crimes 👍
@@LifeistooshortCK We all blame Beeching who was only the technician, but it was a typical Tory slight of hand by Ernie Marples, the Minister of Transport who just happened to be COE of Marples Ridgway, a construction company which stood to make zillions from all the roads made necessary by closing around 30% of the country's railway lines. It was the biggest ripoff until the privatisation of the railways followed by the post office. It was a blatant "conflict of interest" but Marples was made a peer and later fled the country to avoid being taken to court for serious tax evasion. So yes, always follow the money! 😂
The connection is the arched bridge was built in the same year as the battle of Waterloo .
Thanks for letting us know Ken. We thought there must be a connection somewhere 👍🙂
Had to google "giving me kittens" and what a laugh it gave me...
It’s a great phrase Winnie 😁
Its pronounced Bet-oos-uh-coy-d not Betsy co-ed but well done for trying haha! Looked fun!
☺️
good vid
Thanks Lee 🙂
Hello Carol and ken it's lovely round that part of Wales , is there something wrong with your mic couldn't hear ken when you were travelling just an observation hope you enjoy the rest of your trip 😊
Thanks Andrew. We are probably going back to using the Rode mics on the next trip so hopefully the sound should improve 👍🙂
Thoroughly enjoyed as usual ! One question .. HOW does Carol stay so slim eating all that food , treats , ect .Good genes ?
Thanks Jennifer. Lots of people ask that question. Maybe it is in her genes 😁
The bridge was built by Thomas Telford in 1815 to commemorate the battle of Waterloo, if you walk in the field you can see the writing on the side of the bridge
Thanks for the info Julie. We didn’t know you could see writing on the side of the bridge 👍🙂
Waterloo bridge was named after the sense of relief, when Napoleon was defeated in the battle of Waterloo. 👍🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴👍🏴🏴🏴🏴👍
Love your channel. As I live on Anglesey, Betws-y-Coed is not too far to visit on a day off. My great grandfather came from Garth Eryr, Betws-y-coed. I would be interested to know the size of your bed. I have a Fiat Doblo camper which is too small. Many thanks. Enjoy Wales
The bed is 101cm wide and 170cm long. Thanks for watching 🙂
@@LifeistooshortCK Thank you so much for taking the time to answer.
