  • Welcome to Porthmadog in North Wales, situated on the edge of The Snowdonia National Park. A beautiful coastal harbour town, home to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Heritage Railway.
We come to North Wales for a walking tour of Porthmadog (close to Portmeirion) to have a look around the town, explore the harbour and take a look at the railway station here.
You will find lots of shops and cafe's in Porthmadog as well as places to stay, so you can use the town as your base for exploring North Wales and Snowdonia.
A busy harbour town with a good range of shops and attractions, including nearby Portmeirion. You can’t keep narrow-gauge railway enthusiasts away. Porthmadog is a major hub, with no less than three lines - the Ffestiniog (running to Blaenau Ffestiniog), the Welsh Highland Railway (running all the way to Caernarfon) and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (with its excellent hands-on railway museum).
Trains were not the only mode of transport in Porthmadog’s history as an important hub based on the slate industry. The town’s Maritime Museum tells the story of the town’s rapid 19th-century growth into a thriving slate exporting and shipbuilding port for handsome three-masted schooners known as Western Ocean Yachts. Porthmadog’s best-loved landmark is The Cob, a mile-long embankment across the estuary that shaped the destiny of the town.
Porthmadog is a good base for walkers and cyclists - follow the Wales Coast Path and Lôn Ardudwy bike route.
Known locally as ‘Port,’ Porthmadog is situated on the edge of The Snowdonia National Park on the estuary of the Afon Glaslyn as it runs into Tremadog Bay. It’s one of the largest towns in Snowdonia with a population of around 4,200. It has a good selection of shops which make it a natural base for holidaymakers who want to explore Snowdonia and the coastline of the Llŷn Peninsula.
It’s one of the newest towns in Wales, only being created in 1810-1811 after William Madocks built a sea wall (The Cob) and reclaimed a 7,000 acres of Traeth Mawr (The Big Beach). This also happened to create a new natural harbour deep enough for small sailing ships that started to appear around 1825 with the first appearance of the name ‘Port Madoc’ in 1830 when the Ffestiniog Railway opened.
Porthmadog developed as a famous port later in the nineteenth century when it began exporting the slate produced at the quarries in Ffestiniog and Llanfrothen to roof houses in the expanding towns and cities in England and all over the world. By 1873 more than a thousand ships carrying over 116,000 tons of slate left Porthmadog.
The tracks and locos left behind after the slate trade also make it one of the most popular tourist areas in Wales being the hub of the Ffestiniog Railway, The Welsh Highland Railway and the smaller Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. It’s also one of the stations on the Cambrian Coast main line which runs along the coast from Pwllheli on the Llŷn Peninsula to Machynlleth, there is goes on to Shrewsbury in the East or Aberystwyth in the South.
Porthmadog station is on the Cambrian Coast Line which runs from Machynlleth to Pwllheli. Travel to Machynlleth is from either Aberystwyth or Shrewsbury.
The town is also served by the narrow gauge Ffestiniog Railway from Blaneau Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon and the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway.
I hope you enjoy this North Wales walking tour of Porthmadog from Gimbal Walk TV, and that it inspires you to come here for a visit!

Another amazing video. Thank you so much. We visit Porthmadog every time we stay in Portmeirion (which is probably a lot for a Canadian couple). It's so nice to see the little familiar shops we visit every time we go. Some of our luggage and my swimming trunks that we bring anywhere we travel came from The Original Factory Shop. Always a good place to find essentials

    PORTHMADOG
Early in the 19th century, William Madocks, M.P. for Boston in Lincolnshire, gained the approval of Parliament for the building of a mile long embankment across the mouth of the Glaslyn Estuary. This embankment, which for many years has carried both road and narrow gauge railway, and is known as The Cob, reclaimed nearly 7000 acres from the sea and made Porthmadog a major port for the then rapidly growing slate industry.
