    The fact that he said he was “inspired” by Jenna’s video told me that it didn’t occur to him to apologise until he saw hers. Even so, he still failed to match the sincerity of Jenna’s video. He separates himself from his mistakes, and is basically begging someone to say “No Shane you don’t deserve that level of punishment!” His apology made my stomach churn.

    • @LieutenantSheep
      @LieutenantSheep 4 роки тому +38

      Absolutely. The dr said that the best apology is changing to show that you’ve learned, and Jenna has changed. We’ve seen it and she made the conscious decision to do so. Shane and Jenna are roughly the same age but while Jenna showed that she recognized the harm of her old content and made her apology abt realizing she had hurt others, Shane made it a pity party and distanced himself from his mistakes. I dont think he improved, I think he realized people wouldn’t accept what he was doing so he set about doing something else to keep viewers

    Shane talking about his past self as "that person" in a negative tone is basically him separating himself from "that person" and all the actions "that person" has done wrong. It automatically lifts the weight of guilt of his shoulders and puts it right on "that person", which I think is a pathetic way to apologize. Just like Dr. Sarcastic said: I've changed.

      I'm not defending everything he's done, but at one point we have to be able to accept that people do change, even if it's not to the perfection that you want. He has a long way to go, but people really are treating someone who's trying, like he's the scum of the earth. I've seen KKK members change, I bet you would be very proud of them for doing so. Why can't we do the same for Shane and give him the benefit of the doubt? Liam Scanlan JFK was shot on 11/22/63, and even though it’s believed that Oswald did it, there are conspiracy theories that multiple people were involved. The (debunked) conspiracy theories claim that the fatal shot came from an area called the grassy knoll, which is not where Oswald was. So Shane was confessing to so much that he might as well have confessed to being the shooter from the conspiracy theory too, lol

      You do realize this man has a doctorate in philosophy. not psychology. hes not a psychologist or a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist. hes a mental health counselor. not on the same scope of psychology or psychiatry. whatever "professional" psychoanalysis he may do, is technically not in the scope of his practice and should not be taken as licensed professional opinion.

      @@lizs5283 I think you may be confused about how doctorate degrees work. A PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy, but it doesn't mean the recipient studied philosophy. A PhD is the designation given to any doctoral degree that isn't in medicine. While a psychiatrist will receive an MD because they have to attend medical school, a psychologist or mental health counselor doctoral degree will receive a PhD.

      I don’t get what’s so bad about explaining?? He hardly was giving excuses but rather giving context to why he did some things which by the way... he also apologized for. Do people
      just forget these reasons or “excuses” are followed by apologies?? He owned up to everything but people just want to see his negative side for drama purposes. His apology wasn’t overly dramatic nor monetized. Taking accountability is the name of the title and guess what, he took accountability. People change, so try and find a video of Shane doing what he did 8 years ago today... exactly, you can’t because he’s changed. And let me just say this because everybody is bringing up his past videos. Multiple times he has addressed that he literally doesn’t like what he used to do and he’s regretful. What. Else. Do. You. Want. Him. To. Do. As for the tati situation I have no idea so I can’t speak my mind on it.

    • @yuri2604
      @yuri2604 4 роки тому +7

      Jo Quin ok jo, my problem with his apologies is that they are obviously dishonest. First of all, he claims that he is taking responsibility for every mistake that he has done. And he also says that there are no excuses for his actions. But then, he went on to give excuses anyways. What he actually was thinking “I’m going to say that they don’t need to forgive me to show how humble and regretted I am. And, taking credit for this, I’m also giving excuses so they can feel bad for me”. It’s a quite psychological trick saying “it was my fault, you don’t need to forgive me” and “it’s my fault, you need to forgive me, but I did this because...” because while simultaneously you are taking credit for being humble and say that the person doesn’t need to forgive you, you’re also making excuses so the person will forgive you. I don’t know if I explained well but anyway

    • @yuri2604
      @yuri2604 4 роки тому +2

      Jo Quin my second problem is the excuse of “oh it was that person, I hated that person...” No, you don’t need to hate that person because that person was you. It is you. Honestly, nobody cares if he decides that he is going to be all PC from now on because this is not improvement. Distancing yourself from the person that you were is not gonna make you a better person. It’s just makes you a fake good person which is actually the vibes that I always got from him.

      I think it shows more that Todd isn't 100% unbiased when he give these snarky remarks. It doesn't provide any substance when it comes to the analysis though when the topic of "how much Shane talks" is irrelevant in his own analysis. It's just a snarky remark with poor taste.
      Shane is most likely really nervous, feeling really bad about himself which will affect his ability to think rationally and at the same time produce these "perfectly" summarized apology video which also shows how little empathy/sympathy Todd shows in the video when he doesn't even take this for account in his analysis.
      There is time for humor but it should never be at the expense of others which is why I think it is of poor taste and makes me disappointed of Todd because he knows better than this, this isn't a one time thing either, there are much more of these remarks throughout the video
      The standard I am putting Todds videos are at an academic level because Todd uses his doctors title in his videos which means you should always represent that level of quality and standard associated with said titel. You would have never been able to pull a analysis like this on a doctors level.
      Poor taste and doesn't include a lot of perspectives at all. It only services to ridicule Shane and jump on a bandwagon
      And then you can discuss the meaning with humor in these analysis as well and also, for me when you are a doctor these kinds of personal remarks should be left out. Also when providing with information you shouldn't laugh/smirk either which Todd does.

    • @marisabel5500
      @marisabel5500 4 роки тому +4

      Sure, but he hasn't actually repeated the mistakes he made years ago? And to me, the best apology is changed behaviour.
      Just like when Daryl Davis talks about KKK members changing their ideas. Or should we condemn people for past mistakes forever? (And no I'm not talking about things like rape or molestation, but he's never done that and that would be a different convo).
      I can't recognize who i was 10 years ago, can you? We all change and evolve, and those who really don't (like Jeffree Star) are easier to condemn because they repeat their bad behaviour all the time.

      I like to believe that everyone is capable of change, and I believe that Shane can change, too. But I'm not inclined to believe it until he changes the factors that motivate him to offend. And I don't think something like that would come in the form of a public apology.
      If I start seeing him make content that doesn't try to manipulate his audience, and change his dynamic with his public social group for the better, I'll start believing it. But yeah, hearing the same apology for the same thing over and over just isn't going to do it for me.

      @@pallasitematrix1614 he didn't apologise for it over and over, and he addressed it in the video. That the last apology he made for his past 6 years ago wasn't enough. And between that time he hasn't ever done blackface or any of those things he recognize are disgusting. It's almost like people only hear what they want to hear. People where pissed at him for not addressing anything or taking any accountability, and now that he does, he's still being butchered because he didnt use the 'correct' words that sound better for everyone. Like come on. People are condemning him without even giving him a chance to proove he's changed from his tweet. Because in many ways, to me, he has changed from the racist jokes and the irrational and diagusting jokes he never thought people would take seriously. Which is his problem, he thinks everthing is just fun and games, and he needa to wake up from that. But I'm willing to forgive and see what happens, rather than just keep filling myself with hate from things that happened in a time when the comedic atmosphere not only in UA-cam but also in movies and shows where the most outrageous things. Specially in todays standards, and you know what that is? Thats having white privilege. And it's VERY good that we can call people out now when thwy do something wrong, but people aren't even aware, it seems to me, how fucked up the world used to be. That doesn't make people neccesarily evil, just ignorant. And Shane is waking up to that. I'm not saying the things in the past where ever ok, but tbh, people didn't get that back then. I never thought he was ever evil, i know what evil performs like and behaves like. He's just someone who obviously didn't have his head on straight and his past will confirm why he made the shit he made without even thinking twice. Sometimes he still doea that, like in his last tweet. But racist, evil and a pedophile? No, thats just taking it away from the real racists evil pedophiles out there.

      @@marisabel5500 I'm not sure how to unpack all of what you're saying, to be honest. I think you're under the impression that I'm saying things that I never intended to say.
      I'm not condemning him for things that he's changed, and I do recognized that he's changed in a lot of ways. The skits that I really see as offensive stopped years ago, and I know that they were born out of a different time on youtube that's very different to what it is now. I agree with you; they weren't right, but the norms on what was edgy, but still acceptable, humor was different then. In my mind, his stopping making that content was enough, and I can let bygones be bygones, and I certainly don't think he's evil. And I don't think he needs to be raked over the coals for things that happened years ago, and aren't happening now.
      Idk, maybe I'm confusing the things he's apologized for, in and out of dedicated videos, with fuck ups that happen over and over again that he doesn't apologize for. But he should be held accountable for the things he's still doing, like manipulating his audience and lashing out on twitter. The dude's been getting himself involved with drama after drama in negative ways, and stands to benefit from continuing to do it.
      His "brand" has included being controversial from the beginning. And it's gotten a lot better! But that doesn't mean it isn't still harmful. And he should be held accountable to that. And until he stops trying to be controversial for controversial's sake, I think he's going to continue to make a lot of the same mistakes. My critiscm isn't that he used to do racist things, it's that he's created an environment in which he benefits from doing bad things like manipulating his audience and getting involved in drama. So I think until he changes that, he''s going to keep doing it.

Shane on the other hand turned to trying to get newer followers through 'shocking' docos and riding others tailcoats. I'd say that has some bearing on how the apologies were received overall. Not to mention the live video Shane did were he lost the plot. Jenna bowed out and will stay true to her word, she will return when feels the time is right. I think you really need to look into yourself if you think jokes influence wether molestation or rascism actually adds to the likelyhood people commit or allow said actions to take place. What evidence do you have of this?
      Dark humor has its roots in sadness and the indifference of the universe. Far from actually laughing and accepting the subject matter as good it laughs at the terrible absurdity of it through a set up punchline. The shock value itself is a key element.
      Dr grande has a video on dark humor I think you should watch. It would better explain why you might be predisposed to find things unfunny that a good portion of people find funny.

      Absolutely. Also, there is an important distinction between "edgy, dark humor" directed at well adjusted adults that punches UP not down and racist, vile videos directed at an audience that mostly consists of young teens and minors.
      I'm not an American and I barely spoke English when I used to watch his videos. I was 12 at the most. I learned words like the N word, shared his videos with friends and thought that his racist characters had to be funny because he's an adult and he laughed at them and I wanted be mature like he is. I had no cultural context and it normalized racism and blackface for me. I had no discussions surrounding those topics at home because they don't culturally relate to me, but I internalized the racism as a child.
      He also made all sorts of sexual jokes knowing that his audience was young girls, sometimes directed at them. He mocked sexually harassed minors. It normalized the concept for me. He also used to do tiny chat and omegle video calls with minors where he would ask them to "twerk" and all sorts of other gross stuff (proof and screen caps on Twitter) and it led me to using the same horrible websites at 12 years old. It normalized the idea of being on a Webcam while an older man is inappropriate to me as a minor. Besides, if you visit these websites now, you'll see the amount of flashers and disgusting predators on that app. Why promote it to children?
      Sure, it is not his responsibility to control what kids watch, but it is his responsibility to adjust his content to his audience in a responsible manner. If you are profiting off children, you have to make the ethical choice of how you're gonna use your platform. I am not much older now than he was when he made those videos, and I don't understand how he thought that what he was doing was okay. At 21 I see how much harm that type of content did to me as a child. Yes, my parents share part of the blame for not closely monitoring me, but so does Shane Dawson. And it's clear to me now that many more minors at the time went through the same thing.
