Thank you for the honourable tribute in telling Loretta‘s story Adrian. So sad to lose her life for a few measly hundred dollars as she was pursuing such an important career. Being a Canadian citizen, I hear all too often about indigenous women who go missing and are never found.
The judgement in Canada is despicable. The fact that man will be eligible for parole in 25 years after killing a pregnant woman is beyond me to understand.
Hey, do you mind if I ask you a question then? Adrian mentioned at the end that the police investigation "faltered" after they learned that Loretta was of Inuit descent, but he didn't really give any details about how that was the case. Could you shed any light on this, specifically any examples of how the investigation might have been mishandled after that point, like for example oversights or even sheer laziness that ended up delaying the eventual arrests or prosecution? I'm extremely interested in the topic of systemic failures of the police in cases of missing indigenous women, so when Adrian mentioned that point it got me asking questions... Thanks in advance!
@@pizzlerot2730 The only info I've heard or could find was that Loretta's parents felt a shift after her it was brought up that she was in fact, Inuk. Exert I found: "When they said she was a white woman, I would call to the investigators and they would answer to me and I would talk personally to the investigators and after, when they started calling her Inuk, I had to start swearing and everything to get answers," said Miriam Saunders. "After that, I started talking to this go-between." Halifax Regional Police issued a statement saying that, as part of a set process, a family liaison officer is always assigned to cases involving homicides and missing persons who "is responsible for ensuring effective communication with the family, to the extent possible without jeopardizing the investigation." In my opinion, there is alot more perceived racism today, then actual racism.
@@briannacm8741 interesting, thanks for that information. And regarding racism, there's definitely a lot of both, with different amounts of each in different geographical and societal areas. Where it gets tricky is trying to root out true systemic racism, because it's very difficult to prove and is often passed off as perceived racism. Very rarely can we point a finger at an obvious bad apple in the system; the vast majority of it is actually a manifestation of the subconscious biases of many people, so by definition we tend to not be aware of it until after the fact (if ever). It's a tough nut to crack, but that's why it's important to keep asking questions, and also to pay attention to the statistics since that's the best way to discover biases in data.
I wouldn't be too worried at first if a grown friend or colleague went silent for a while. But when I start getting suspicious messages referring to banking apps and the like that's when I start to freak.
A life sentence should be just that-a LIFE sentence. Anything else is inherently dishonest. If they're going to sentence someone to "25 years to life", SAY THAT! None of this insulting bullshit about a "life sentence" that is absolutely NOTHING of the sort!
Here in the U.S., the Thanksgiving Holiday is tomorrow. I am thankful of all of the hard work and research that goes into your videos. You present these tragic stories in a very respectful manner. Thank you again.
It's no mystery why this channel has grown so quickly. Gripping storytelling every single time. The work that must go into these videos is beyond words. You're very very good at this, and I'm happy for your success. The respect you show the victims and their families is stellar, and it's obvious you don't take shortcuts. Thank You for another great, informative, educational video!!!!!!
It boils my piss that people would commit such a vile act purely because they don't want to pay their rent? Don't wanna pay your rent, then don't rent? Why take a life for such a petty, ridiculous reason? I hope they never get out. Loretta will be missed, God bless.
I just subscribed to you a bit ago and have been trying to go through your whole library. Thank you for covering these stories and doing it with respect.
Actually, there was no evidence to support the idea that the investigation was anything but timely and thorough. As I stated in a comment above, I looked into it and discovered misinformation and assumptions. Just to sum it up, her body was found within 9 days and both defendants were sentenced to life. That shows how well the investigation was done.
I appreciate this channel so much. This is so heartbreaking. The way you tell a story is just amazing. RIP Loretta. So much love to Yelchin and the rest of her family.
I’m from Nova Scotia, I never expected to hear a case from here covered on UA-cam! Thank you. Adrian, I also suggest looking into the mass shooting spree that happened here in April of 2020- a man impersonated a police officer and murdered 22 people.
Adrian, you’ve created the best atmosphere and staging for your “Coffeehouse Crime”. No other crime channel has such an impressive “room”. ❄️ You have a wonderful, respectful and interested following. May be the best on YT!
I've seen this case presented before and yet had to watch your take on it Adrian. As I expected, your video surpasses others on this case...you manage to present in a consistently empathetic way without being gratuitous. You lay stress on the value of the lives lost and always manage to honour them. Thank you.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for covering another case related to the MMIWG2+ tragedy in Canada, Adrian! Please look into the case of Noelle O'Soup. It's also related to this, and is a crazy story, the stuff of nightmares!
Thank you for covering this story in such a sensitive, compassionate way. Such a beautiful and strong woman who only wanted to do good in this world; what a tragedy and loss for not only her community, but for all of us. The fact that the case was treated differently after they learned of her Native heritage made it even sadder. We as a society, have a long way to go!
Absolutely horrible those two killer's to take advantage of Loretta was bad enough but to murder her and her unborn baby is just mind blowing...thankyou Adrian for telling this sad story so respectfully 😥💜
Just found Coffeehouse Crime a couple of weeks ago, and I gotta say this channel has become one of my true crime favorites to listen to while I sit in my office at work. Been catching up on all the episodes last week and this week. Much love for all you do while researching and discussing all of your cases.

wow....I'm from Halifax (living out of province now for school), but this case is so devastating, I remember hearing about it often. It's so terrifying to think that this happened so close to me and that people can be so evil. The justice system failed her so deeply, I hate how Canada prosecutes these cases... Rest in peace, Loretta, you deserved to live a full healthy life ❤
I love your videos. How you take the time to learn about the town or city the victims died in and about the care and respect you show not only the dead but the families & friends that may may be watching. I still watched every minute of this video though Adrian, you are a great story teller and you included details that even the television show didn’t. Thank you for all the time and effort you put in to making these videos for us all to watch. I have mentioned this before but could you please do some research into the murder spree of Maksim Gelman. I love how you start by giving an in-depth, genuine, honest insight into who the person was before they became a victim to crime, presenting them as a complex human with hopes and dreams rather than relying on the usual cliches. It definitely helps you appreciate what a loss to the world their untimely, senseless death created.
This story is so, so sad. It really hit me harder than most of your other cases. I'm so sorry to Loretta and her family, her husband. This breaks my heart. RIP sweet lady.
Hi Coffee House Crime. Again I hope those trashy losers who killed her basically rot in hell. There wasn't any reason for her murder except they were greedy & uncaring about anyone but themselves. Hope to see you soon, peace & Happy Holidays! Love, Janine Smiley✌👍🙏💅🆒️💯❗❕😏😀🙂😍🤗⌚🛋🏡🎄🎁🎊🎉🎀🌺🌹

Such a sweet soul she was and you described her so beautifully and respectful, thank-you for that... RIP Loretta, condolences to her family. Never conduct anything potentially conflicting with another person or group without a family member or another friend with you...
I mean to expect the police to do their job is asking a lot. They literally watch homeless people drown, knock down elderly peaceful protesters, kill unarmed black folks for traffic stops, beat their wives, etc. all on our taxes!
The two were suspects from the start but if you listen closely you would know since everything was under the table there were no records of who she was renting to. So no face or name just the apartment they were renting. Within 2 weeks her body was found and they were in jail.
It's outrageous that she would be forced to move schools for punching a groper. Why is the school system here so fond of punishing people for standing up for themselves while the instigator gets a firm slap on the wrist?
Exactly. A kid who does that should be immediately expelled, and there should be strict schools people like that get sent to where they can still learn and benefit from oversight, yet be removed from the general public. ENOUGH with the permissiveness in western society - it is disgusting.
She wasn't forced to move by the school, it was her parents choice to remove her. School's definitely ignore low level persistent bullying and then overreact when the victim stands up for themselves but you make it sound like she was expelled or something.
@David Hughes Some people would rather be outraged by their emotional reaction than actually pay attention to the facts. I agree with you, apparently basic comprehension skills have become increasingly uncommon.
I live in Vancouver BC. This one hits close to home as my friend Andrea was one of Willie Picton's victims. It's common knowledge the police "faltered" in that investigation as well. Thanks for all you do Adrian. ❤
I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend. I live in Van too and the police have disappointed in so many cases, especially when indigenous people are targeted
I'm so sorry for your loss. Sadly, I find a lot of younger people don't even know that that POS picton existed; sad because your friend Andrea and all those lost, especially so horrifically, should never be forgotten. Sending my love, for whatever that's worth, and I hope you and her family have been able to heal over time
I read a book about that case, written by a female police detective. It was a savage indictment of the way white male detectives go about dealing with crimes against indigenous women. The author was traumatized by police behavior and the lack of ethics on the part of some of the male detectives.
Hi Adrian, I was wondering if you could cover the case of Ryan Johnson of Aloha, Oregon. He was shot and killed in broad daylight by his baby mothers father.

It is dangerous to go alone when we wanted to ask for payment (loan, borrowed money and so on). There was a case where a landlady feeling frustated with the tenants who refused to pay any rent for 3 months. When she went to see them, it end up with murders. The tenants killed both the landlady and her husband.

Exert I found:
"When they said she was a white woman, I would call to the investigators and they would answer to me and I would talk personally to the investigators and after, when they started calling her Inuk, I had to start swearing and everything to get answers," said Miriam Saunders. "After that, I started talking to this go-between."
Halifax Regional Police issued a statement saying that, as part of a set process, a family liaison officer is always assigned to cases involving homicides and missing persons who "is responsible for ensuring effective communication with the family, to the extent possible without jeopardizing the investigation."
In my opinion, there is alot more perceived racism today, then actual racism.
You have to understand a lot of people probably thought she had relapsed or something

@@tamarawebb76 I wonder what will happen next for people who get buster for serious crimes! House Arrest. Life in prison needs to be just that.

Your channel's one of my favorites that tackles true crime. Keep up the good work.
It boils my piss that people would commit such a vile act purely because they don't want to pay their rent? Don't wanna pay your rent, then don't rent? Why take a life for such a petty, ridiculous reason? I hope they never get out. Loretta will be missed, God bless.

Even though some of the cases are gruesome, he still makes it almost relaxing to learn about these events.. plus a bit of local history.

Love your way of covering this story I hope the day comes soon for the respect that indigenous people deserve .my condolences to the family x

Yes, once again, another very disturbing case!

Why did police not watch the whole apartment building's security tape right away? How were they satisfied watching her go in, but not come out?
I thought the same! It's like basic investigation procedure!
I mean to expect the police to do their job is asking a lot. They literally watch homeless people drown, knock down elderly peaceful protesters, kill unarmed black folks for traffic stops, beat their wives, etc. all on our taxes!
The hell are you guys talking about? They solved this case almost immediately

It's like that everywhere. Nothing is done to help the victims until you fight back -- but then you are also treated like a bully.
@@wandertree Canada tried that with it's residential schools - it didn't go very well.

There should be a task force to monitor police responses.
I read a book about that case, written by a female police detective. It was a savage indictment of the way white male detectives go about dealing with crimes against indigenous women. The author was traumatized by police behavior and the lack of ethics on the part of some of the male detectives.
I personally got chills up my spine just seeing the photo of that couple. It was a very poor decision to deal with people like that.
