Cake is amazing, definitely check out more music from them. I recommend "Comfort Eagle", "Nugget", "Italian Leather Sofa", "Rock 'n Roll Lifestyle", "Never There", or if you want another cover they did, their version of "War Pigs". Honestly you can't go wrong with any of their stuff

Wow! Never seen a standing ovation from Brad before. I'm shocked, it's like spotting something as rare as an albino peacock.
I remember when Cake would play every weekend for $6 around town and bring out a full horn section...their flyers for the show were seemingly everywhere. Always a fun live show..
They were really well backed middle class kids I think, just given the freedom to go out and do what they want and some interesting happens that way 😅

Wow, that was the first time for me seeing Brad vibing more right from the start than Lex, and he was right, this cover is great beyond imagination! I don't know that many other songs by Cake, and those I know I don't like as much as I love this one, but here we have an absolutely incredible masterpiece! I've been loving this from the first time I listened to it about 20 years ago, and still do, and come back to it whenever I need something really uplifting. This for me might be on a playlist of my 20 most beloved songs ever! Great reaction, thank God you got it! :D

Edit: If you go to karaoke, it's actually really easy to get into the unusual cadence - it starts feeling natural. Problem is that if you are with other people somebody will invariably try to sing along to the Gloria Gaynor version and the whole thing will be a big mess.

Cake was misrepresented and lumped in with other bands they had no business being next to. At the time I didn't get it.
A few years later a friend was like "dude, Cake is great." And I gave it another chance and agreed.

Cake is one of my all-time favorites, you need to check out “sheep go to heaven goats go to hell” This is one of my favorite Flows in any song I’ve heard, they’re so funky and quirky they are absolutely amazing

Could have said it better. "A cover is a risky thing to do." it really is. What drew me to this version of this song is the funky bass throughout it. I play bass and it took me a long time to learn this version. But it just flows with so much feeling. Love it.

I worked onstage at a multi-band concert at George Mason U. Cake was one of the bands. Only 3 guys in the band so the guitar player also played trumpet. They put on a great show.
This is one of the rare cases where the cover is better than the original. This is from the album “Fashion Nugget” and every song is great if you listen to it in order in its entirety. I used to cruise in the summer jammin this album on repeat daily for years during the summers. Cake is awesome and this version of the song is their vibe. One of a kind. I really thought Brad especially would love Cake and so far he’s loved them all. And he stood up and clapped 💪

This is like some band geeks who know how to play drums, bass and guitar, and the one guy who just plays the trumpet getting together and playing random songs and they said “we should play ’I Will Survive’” and they just figure it out and start jamming.

Cake is super underrated. They have so many great songs.
Brad is right, it is a fantastic cover.
Cake were a great group and very talented musicians.
Also they have their trademark that make the group instantly recognizable, mainly the lead vocal delivery, their gorgeous and very bombastic baselines and a lot of brass used in their songs. Also they always have nice melodies and do great covers.
Other gems worth listening, Never There, The Distance, Frank Sinatra and their quite unconventional but fantastic cover of Black Sabbath War Pigs.
In my opinion Cake is one of the best bands to come out in the last thirty years, they have such an extensive catalog of overwhelmingly amazing songs. "Never There", "Wheels", and "Mustache Man (Wasted)" are a few you guys could check out in the future. I'm happy to see Brad genuinely enjoying a song the whole way through, if any song deserved a standing ovation this one did lol. Keep the quality content coming ya'll.
More Cake, please. The bass line brings that funk.
Edit: that cut at the end was the poster of the song, the song has a better resolution at the end; just a few seconds more but definitely worth it.

Honestly, when you've heard this version enough you just MEMORIZE the cadence. Honestly, I can sing this one more accurately than I can the Gloria Gaynor version. HER version sounds weird to me at this point.
Yup, for all off us who have heard Gloria's version a million times and know the lyrics by heart, the cadence in this version is really easy to follow and sing along to. I got sick of the original cause it's been overplayed to death but I love this cover.
I've heard the Gaynor original, and it's great (though admittedly before my time, so my exposure is kinda minimal), but when I think of this song, this version is the only one I can hear in my head.
This version has so much more anger and angst than the original version…which matches the lyrics.

This band's flow is like being a socially awkward person, but you're trying to play it cool and be normal at a party. I love this band.
Interesting take! I find it the other extreme; just so much confidence that they almost don't care if you like their stuff or not. They're doing something really cool that they really enjoy, and you can hop on or stay behind, but they're going.
I remember seeing an old video of a live performance by The Doors, and Jim Morrison had something of a similar vibe. He stood perfectly still as the song started, kinda leaning on the mic stand. In anyone else, it would look like a person frozen in terror, but Jim just oozed authority. Couldn't tell you why, but the difference was striking.

Never seen Brad with so much emotion to a song, impressive.
I saw them in concert last week. The lead singer was talking in between songs and he pauses in between words when he talks. That's just who he is and what makes him unique. Almost like a little stutter. They were great live.
This may be the most I've seen Brad clearly enjoy anything.
Cake is one of a kind. This cover is a gem, but they have a ton of diamonds.

I was never a huge Cake fan though I have always dug them. I’ve never even bought any of their music but I have most definitely listened to them On Purpose! Lex nailed it with how awesome it is that they retained their sound and they did so doing the song justice simultaneously.

My favorite part of this song is when he sings that line about stopping by and his rhythm makes it sound like he's emphasizing every word to show just how determined he his to be rid of his ex: "And. so. you. thought. you'd. just. drop. by. and. you. ex. pect. me. to. be. free."
