My mum and I used to listen to this to encourage us - we had to 'run away' from home because of my abusive father. In those days the ideas in this song were seen as quite radical. 💜
"A declaration of perseverance." I love that. 💛 I grew up in a religious cult which practices shunning as a control technique. I eventually grew up and found the courage to leave in search of a genuinely meaningful life, but it was very hard for a while finding my place in the world. I had lost my entire community and I had very few connections in the outside world. This song always reminds me of that time. It's a victory shout for anyone who has been through abuse of any kind and come out the other side stronger than they knew they could be. I can totally see how it would inspire the LGBTQ community through their struggles in recent decades.

Dereck, Out in the clubs back in the 70s, you never went a night without hearing this song...And the dance floor would be immediately crowded with people at the first few notes! Thanks so much for my Friday night flashback - it's been a lot of years but I can still remember all the fun and craziness like it was yesterday!

Hello, you have to see the live video from 1993 (50 years old) in a church "The reason for the season". At 80 years old, she still gives concerts! that a woman! HUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
This song is so appropriate for these times. It never gets old. I saw Gloria sing this song live in 2012. Then she sang a tribute to her friend and colleague Donna Summer, who had just passed. Ms. Gaynor, Disco, and Ms. Summer are ever powerful.
This is her voice with a symphony orchestra. Sylvester’s “Mighty Real” was all synthesizer generated music and was released the same year. I don’t know if it means anything but it’s interesting. They are both gems!
This is one of the great 70s Disco classic that was forgotten for years until in 1994 the movie "The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert" revived it and transformed it into an undisputed anthem of the LGBT community.
I saw her in a recent interview, she's hardly aged at all.

No backing vocals because it was 'just' the B-side to a song named 'Substitute'. A D.J. discovered this song and decided to completely ignore the A-side.
Saw her in concert October 1979. Roller skating was big then.
There's a great video on UA-cam with Diana Ross introducing Gloria Gaynor at one of her concerts and they then both sing this. A brilliant part at the end with Diana declaring that it's Gloria's song

Even though I can't deny the all-time-gay-anthem, I think it doesn't come close to her singing "Never can say goodbye" and most of all "Reach out I'll be there" ! Far better in my opinion !

You should check out the band Garbage. Electro-rock. "I'm Only Happy When It Rains", "Push It" and "Cherry Lips" are all stand outs. Among many others.

I gotta ask, Why during your Pride Week Reaction series did you not react to ANY Village People songs??? If Y.M.C.A. was too obvious of a choice given that it was their only song that was a mega hit with mainstream audiences and the themes where VERY coded; but why not Macho Man? The lyrics made the meaning pretty obvious at that point (especially in the live concert versions of that song).
I love how involved you get with music, I think you should delve into some Frankie goes to Hollywood, relax or two tribes. Controversial in their time but ultimate pride ambassadors. 😁
