    I guess it's safe to say Kankkunen had one of the best car control skills of all time

      Easy motion on the wheel and nothing surreal like throwing the car full 120º like "rally simmers" do, amazing to watch something believable yet genious.

      he was the artist of rallying, superb control, when you saw a car "dance" you knew it was KKK.

    Earnt his money that stage,snow glare,low sun glare,sun flicking through the trees,1st water splash with the steam when you couldn’t see ANYTHING but still on it. Skills. Legend

    Kankkunen's car control on that event, in what were impossible conditions, was just properly awesome.

    Me and my mate made the journey from St Albans in my Mk2 escort to see this in 1993. We arrived at the snowy bank of parking, to play in the snow, while looking for a space. The stage was amazing, and seeing this skills of this man, and many others was inspiring. I think Robbie Head rolled the Megane that day, but might have been 1995. Anyway, the day was amazing, and on leaving the venue, the last runners were still running through. We got onto the gravel track to the main entrance as the group N cars were being watched by the spectators. My mate then says...give it some...so I honourably obliged. ( Now this was a rally prepared Escort), and to my mates delight we made so much noise on exit, that most of the spectators watching, turned around to see what all the noise was about...Marvellous!! We then had a fun journey back down the M1 in tandem with the Skoda rally team... Memories of bygone days, where you could drive properly. I think I have another Mk2 itch to scratch.

      Definitely. And 1:35 to 2min was pure madness. Sure the gear ratios are short but still, 5th gear flat out while car is in the air half of the time and never pointing straight...

      Yep! That's what's known as a Scandinavian Flick, or a Pendulum Turn. You brake to load the front suspension and take the weight off the rear and guide the car first to the outside and then back to the inside.

    My problem is not the driving, but digesting those pace notes. I don't understand how drivers took in all those notes or is it because I am not English native? This is purely art

    • @RABEANTs
      @RABEANTs 4 роки тому +2

      I think with the time they re used to it, and of course you have to be comfortable with the language , noting that it is the driver who created those notes, and here the driver is a finnish native

    Much less stuff on the notes back then. It seems that drivers nowadays have too much information on the pacenotes, but on the other hand there were many places they didn´t mention about, mud or cutting or even a gate on that stage. Was there a limit on how many times they could practise a stage in early 90"s?

      @forevercomputing 4 роки тому

      @@VHSRallies VHS original would be best quality. MPEG uses compression which means in order for a smaller size, parts if the video are removed.
      The missing parts are restored using calculations and they vet close to the original.
      This is why SD TV looks weird today. It WAS better.

    • @VHSRallies
      @VHSRallies  4 роки тому +4

      @@forevercomputing I know how MPEG works. I'm just curious as to why you would expect anything else on a digital video website. The VHS Rallies project is about saving old VHS footage before it degrades beyond the point where it can't be digitised - or enjoyed by anyone, even on a VHS deck, because the tape has perished. I try my best to use sympathetic capture methods (lossless raw AVI, not MPEG) before restoration. But yes, in the end, they have to be output as something that isn't 30gb in size. I choose a fairly mild MP4 setting for that.
