Watching this for the first time in nearly twenty years, this is severely, disgustingly, underrated and smarter than it first looks, everyone diss on the rapping but if you see the ott expression she's doing when rapping she's taking the piss out of braggart consumer culture at the time, having the soldiers and victims of war be models while the media , politicians and elite cheer on like snobs at a fashion show is inspired, as well as having the backdrop of expensive military hardware and then attacking the media and throwing a grenade at them and dubya lighting up a cigar with it was awesome. The only thing I can think of that would be better in this vid would be to have media in the background wearing their corporate logos as a clothing brand name, a section where the cost of war is shown through poor people, homeless veterans opiod addicts as models , with failing towns and closed shops and infrastructure as the background showing how media propaganda and war turns citizens against each other and having that tank spray red paint on the media and dubya lighting up a cigar for sudam after he lost his... I love this. Just wow. When I first heard it I wasn't sure, but I'm loving so late in the game. I kinda skipped over Madonna after Ray of Light. I liked Music, but I can't name one song off that album except (for two SINGLES) like I can the others in order immediately (like multiplication tables. You know them back and forth, but you don't actually add 5 seven times, you just know it's 35). This was extremely ahead of its time since I had no idea when this came out. I can't usually tell. Madonna is doing what she knows best. Being different, and being good at it. She tackled war and the entertainment industry in one blow, but I'll say this: she never would have known unless she got there. We won't ever know unless we get there. We get the idea, but we don't *know* know.
The good news is that she managed to have an amazing career and by then she had so much power in the industry and money to back it up that she could do what she wanted. Hell, the Like a Virgin video was legacy enough and that was just the start.
