    Girlie from the communistic country - same here, I’m born in Slovakia (Czechoslovakia then), was always told I could do not do anything. Until I moved to Spain, then Dubai, then Vietnam and now living in Japan, running commercial teams in large corporate company - we need to share our stories because people around us have so much doubt in them, we are here to help them - no matter what country. So super well done and please share our story!!!! Michaela

    Oh man, my heart really goes out to the woman who moved to Norway for her husband's job. I did the same thing, moving from CA to Seattle, WA after I got married (for my husband) and I had the same depressed feelings, looking for work--and not nearly as many changes or challenges as this caller. I ended up having to work in an entirely different field, and really changing everything about myself b/c I knew it wasn't financially possible for us to move for awhile, and it was very hard. One of the man things I kept feeling was, "I did this all for HIM," and it even put stress on our relationship b/c I grew resentful. I ended up getting through it--but I had to really get over this hump of anger and looking back at the past. Also, making a group of friends in my new home did wonders for my mental health.

      We share stories of women influencers. What's super inspiring is they all have or have had struggles to overcome. From performance anxiety to loss to near death, etc. We have one interview coming up in January with a woman who had to stop being a lawyer and figure out a home business when her son was diagnosed with autism. Sometimes from our biggest struggles we birth the butterfly:)

    Another way to immerse yourself in a new culture and find a sense of worth is through volunteering. If it's financially possible, it's a great way to meet people, get immersed in the language and give to others.

    Dear Marie,
    I just want to thank you for the daily motivation, I watch you while I am working out on the treadmill and while cooking as well. It is so comforting to see a woman in power and as a proper role model. You have inspired me to be my best self while embracing my femininity. Basically how to be a queen in style. We all reach a point where we are stuck in a rut. I am going through that right now, but what keeps me going is the daily dose of motivation and guidance you give.
    I did not know what special gift the world needed from me, but alas I was inspired by you to create my own channel and use my gifts. My channel is focused on self improvement from level 0 to level 100. Many people are going through a mental breakdown, I know how it feels and I want to help everyone out there. Keep rocking!

    My only complaint is that I wished these call-ins would last 8 hours to get me through work ;P I love these call-in shows and I love hearing from people around the world who have massively relatable road blocks and difficulties. Hearing your advice and approach really helps me! And I love that everything you give is actionable. Wonderful show (as always)!!

    I feel for the girl who moved to Norway. I moved abroad for love when I was 18 and had to learn the language, get a degree and find a job I could do to sustain myself. It's a lot of work and pretty emotionally taxing because you start to feel behind in life. There are still areas of my life that are lagging 10 years later. I don't have the community around myself that I want, I'm still searching for meaning in my work and my income is below average. But I know I did a brave thing when I was 18, and even if it takes a little longer, I'll get there and I'll have learnt so much along the way.

    Haha! I am definitely a "burn the bridge behind me" type of goal getter. Not sure it's workin' for me, but hey! That's me. I really got an ah-ha moment from the 2nd caller starting at minute 11. I had the same experience moving to another country in 2013 & it took me a while to own my story. I'm in the Copy Cure now & I personally was struggling to write copy yesterday for my landing page because I told every single detail. When asked, do you have fear behind telling it briefly? I answered yes- because that's what I subconsciously feel is necessary to gain empathy. Yet this young lady said it in 2 mins and we all wanted to hug her. Thanks!

They don't have to be as dramatic as the last callers', I love hearing everyone's story! I've held back talking about myself because I don't like the focus to be on me and people don't seem to care all that much-they prefer talking about themselves. How can we 'self-promote' without becoming a boastful bore?

    Hi Marie! Thanks for sharing your insight with us. I've got a question that's probably opposite to what Mag asked but around the same topic. After finishing my book that addressed four major social justice issues, I built a community on Instagram exactly by sharing my story of a person coming from a place of oppression and persevering in the pursuit of his dreams in the face of overwhelming odds. Every time I shared a piece from my story, I saw how my audience was inspired and empowered - tons of comments and DMs with people sharing their experiences in response. Now, I don't think that my story is greater or more interesting than anybody else's. It never occurred to me that my storytelling could be seen as selfish or narcissistic or taking the focus away from other people in my community. What I know is that I have this ability to contextualize my experiences and lay them out in an accessible and relatable form - that's why my story, along with my work, resonates and makes an observable difference for the people I serve. But here's the problem (and the question). When I start conversations with people who say they appreciate my work and who also have the resources/connections/access to help me scale it and put it on a platform that reaches bigger audiences (which I can't do on my own), then my storytelling seems to be a major turn-off for them because there are pieces in my personal story that, whether I like it or not, call those people's privilege into question and trigger privilege shame in them. It's not that I'm shaming anybody on purpose, but that's how the first function of privilege works: when you take something for granted your entire life and then someone's story exposes it to you as a random advantage, shame is most people's unconscious response. And, as you probably know, shame only drives unconstructive behaviors in us all: denial, blame, and rationalization, so the conversation falls apart, and I don't get the opportunity to get my work to the next level and serve more people who need it. How do I go about telling my story when I talk to someone who is privileged and has never experienced trauma and oppression? I tried explaining privilege and how we all have it in different areas of life and how it's completely random so we shouldn't be either proud ashamed of it, but that doesn't seem to help. As soon as people learn the circumstances that I came from and amidst which I created my work, they disengage and often become outright abusive in communication. Trading the truth for keeping people unaware of, and comfortable with, their privilege is outside my values and it makes my work bankrupt on its own terms. If my storytelling stops being genuine, it stops making a difference (trust me, I checked that many times). It feels like a Catch-22 for me. Being truthful with my story on the one hand allows me to make a difference and on the other hand prevents me from getting an opportunity to make it - so it's stolen from those who need it the most. I'll appreciate your feedback on this.

    Wow this is awesome! So intense! These videos just keeps me hustling! It's like Shark Tank but not! Maybe one day I will need funding and be pitching! I have a cookie shop in my college town. When I started it, I was living in my car with very little direction, just a huge passion to be successful. I just graduated college as well. I started the late night cookie shop out of a local bagel shop in their off hours at night. I was living in my car in the parking lot of the shop at the time with my boyfriend, Bran. It was a crazy experience but it worked! We became a success! And how we have our first storefront location (hopefully a second soon!) We started it to fund a year long backpacking trip around the world and to be successful while living the life of our dreams. I am definitely not where I want to take this to just yet, because I am aiming for pretty BIG! But it’s coming!!

    • @happysinger23
      @happysinger23 5 років тому +4

      You should do it. You are never gonna know what you want to do if you hold yourself back from learning the next level of knowledge. You will only know your purpose if you keep collecting new knowledge, inspiration and new insights to who you are deep down. Sorry I don't mean to sound so aggressive. I am just passionate about the subject. Einstein said you can never solve a problem in the same level of consciousness in which it occurs. Learning in a good program, immerse yourself in new knowledge, point of views, people and experiences is going to continuously lift up your level of consciousness and eventually you will get the clarity you want. It isn't going to get clear until you have enough data to work with if you know what I mean. I wish you the best girl!

    It was actually emotionally very difficult for me to watch your response to the last question about telling the founder's personal story. I am an entrepreneur of my own business, and I do have a really gut wrenching reason as to why I decided to find the company that I have now, and I really do not like to tell the story. The key reason is because I have had faced much discrimination and unfair treatment in my own life due to my sexual orientation, and this continues to be a taboo topic in my country. And to know that as a founder, your job and responsibility is to be a story teller for your company, and to express it so that others should know and share with that vision and invest and collaborate in your company, is so so so so difficult to do. I don't know whether by sharing my story I would do more harm to my company instead. And worse of all, my company was shortlisted for 3 grants, and we have had many people who had come to us to tell us how financially viable our business is, and yet, they turned us down again and again mainly because the judges did not know my story. So it was really really difficult to watch.
