It's often not the size of the hook that results in fish losses but the thickness of the wire. The thicker the wire, the more resistance to tearing out there is. You can land big fish on relatively small hooks if the wire gauge is thick.

Losing a fish that close in is a sickner, but the fact you clipped another rig up straight away and got it back out fishing as quickly as possible is a very good habit to have mate.

I was really pissed off to be honest mate but i soon calmed down andil be back there again soon .
PURPLE. Had luck Earl on losing what could have been a PB, keep trying. I would suggest using larger hooks, 3/0 4/0 or even 5/0 if going for larger fish. I always use the same size for the top and bottom hooks on my pennel rigs and use did and rawle circular hooks, as you strike you'll normally catch the book in the side of the lip. RIGHT LINES

Hard luck loosing the fish mate, I was like that with a huge hound in the summer. After catching a decent one I cast out and within two mins there was another on, I could barely reel it in, and just as it got to the rocks it broke off. It was huge,

Green.I think you should make your baits more compact and make sure your hook points are clear of the bait for better hook up

Everyone has lost a PB - it's the Angling badge of honour. I think it's just as bad when you catch a nice one but don't have your camera with you. I've had a big Pollock and a big Carp like that.
Hi mate, blue is the colour for me, think you are right about the cod being hooked on the smaller pennel hook, I always use the same size hook at the main hook on my pennel rigs, great video tho pal,

Commiserations on losing the Cod... been in that position myself so I know exactly how you felt... I’m from Edinburgh and recently on a fairly local mark I lost an estimated 3-4lb Bass when it was taken by a Sea Otter.... As I was bringing the fish in I kept feeling this BIG tug, I knew it wasn’t from the fish and thought it was a seal.... I had Seals rob my fish two or three times now... I saw two yellow eyes reflecting from the main beam of my head torch and then when it got close to the rocks, it bit the fish off behind the head, and swam away with the body!
My main concern prior to this was, how to I stop this Otter away from the hooks, but thankfully it left me the head.... to be honest it was the last thing I had expected.... it was nice too see that the local wildlife is doing well, but it’s annoying when you lose a fish!
I’ve been fishing for 35+ years and this is one experience that everybody has said, ‘Mike... it could only happen to you’... then started laughing ...
I’ve recently started to use Trident rig accessories and find the superb... very streamlined and does the job very well... great for long casts... neat, tidy, and streamlined.... certain that it given me a few yards, even though I can cast a good distance.
Wish you tight lines, especially for “that” Houdini of a Cod... Think positive.... you’ll catch it...

Are you finding the Rotobait is not releasing sometimes? If you use an impact lead it will disrupt the water flow to release the bait clip. If you use a plain grip lead it will work a lot better.
I have had that problem just once but yeah I understand what you mean it's the shape of the lead that makes the difference.
I'm having the opposite problem, they're unclipping mid flight especially with bigger baits.
@@septicsceptic419 I've never had that problem but I will try big baits next time and il try it
@@EarlsFishingAdventures it held worm baits fine but crab, squid baits hit out at range saw them unclip more often than they stayed clipped.

Unlucky with the cod,I'm sure you'll get him in the end. Try putting a slight twist to your hooks, help keep your fish on the hook. Trident tackle is great, I like the blue ones.

You could probably get away with 2/0-4/0,not sure what size you use at the moment ?,even a small cod has a big gob ! Not that I'm likely to win,but black would be good,but I wouldn't be too fussed ! Nice gesture too.
I was using 1/0 cox and rawel spes x main hooks and a small chinu . Im going to be uping the sizes on all my cod rigs
You could try a 2/0-4/0 as the main hook and the chinu as the top one 👍🎣🦈

Shame you lost that nice cod, there was a fair bend on that rod and it was bouncing. Have you thought about using a drop net, could save you a few losses. Grey for me please.

Great video o.k. you lost a large cod but you stuck with it. I have lots of trident tackle and due to circumstances have yet to get it wet, so please exclude me from the competition (there are a lot more deserving cases than me) Can't wait to see you back out there trying for that cod. great vid mate shame about it coming off bud ,,,jave u ever thought about trying a drop net aswell ? so once it at the wall u aint gotta haul a fish up if its a good 1 an it shakes mid air it could easily come off the hooks ,,,,,any colour mate will do me as i fish the murky bristol channel,
I really want a drop net but itwould be a pain to dothat on my own. Ifi had someone with me then using a drop net would be great.

I've just gone over to a diawa slosh 20.what reel do use please.
I use the Penn 525 Mag 2 and 515 Mag 2 . I used to use the Slosh 20 and 30 . Really good reels mate bomb proof

Hi earl can you do a video on using Cooked prawns 🍤 to catch cod to see the comparison of squid and lug cocktail to just a prawn 🍤 bait be interesting to see
If it works you can get a bag of prawns from Aldi for a couple of quid and should last a fishing session

I know a lad who fishes off dover breakwater and he has great results with them also at night he attached small light sticks which you put on the tip of the rod he ties them to his hook with a squid cocktail and fishes of the pier at night I have seen him catch loads of cod where no one else is catching
