It was the Harkonnens who had control over the spice harvest, not the Atreides when the movie started. This is an important thing to remember in order to understand the betrayal and massacre that happened to the House Atreides.
Dune isn't for everyone. And that's ok. Not every film is for everyone. And that's ok.
On the attention span issue, I think if you take the time to sit without any distractions and watch this carefully you'll be greatly rewarded. This is not a "2 Screen Film" like so many seem to be these days. A lot of film companies actually use that term "2 Screen Film/TV" as a way of getting creators to tone down their piece because they think that people will be half-watching it while also on their phone and will need everything spelled out in great detail to avoid being lost.
agreed, I dont get it when people say that dune is a slow movie, zero pointless shots in that film
i skipped Dune for year and a half bc zendaya is in it. but eventually ended up watching it

You're right about the pacing. There is so much useless filler in pt one. They clearly wanted to milk the cash cow by splitting it in two.
I feel like about an hour and a half could be cut out and you'd lose nothing important. They added loads of glorious action scenes and heroic moments that just didn't matter. Why have Paul and his mother crash in a thopter only to get into another one and crash again? It's repetitive and essentially time wasting.
The film ends at the point when it should be just getting started.
I haven't seen pt two yet. But if its good, I hope some clever person cuts them up and reedits them into one cohesive whole.
Villenueve's Dune is massively bloated and horribly paced. He added nothing to the 1984 movie storywise despite adding over 3 hours of runtime..
Respectfully, I disagree. However, Pretty much everything that you said in this review is how I feel about the first Dune. The second one landed for me though. I’m with you on the Zendaya note. She was the only actress I felt was a little inconsistent in her role. Anyways, keep up the great reviews! I love your channel.
I’ve been putting off watching Dune 2 coz as much as I found Dune 1 to be beautiful to look at, I also found it to be boring mostly because I felt nothing for any of the characters.
And it’s not an attention span issue for me. I’m a One Piece fan, I love deep lore, politics and extensive world building, but if I don’t care about the characters then all the work put into fleshing out the world won’t keep me watching. I firstly need to care about the characters I’m watching navigate this expansive world.
I felt the same way. I downloaded Dune 2 on my phone and it took me a while, like about 2 months to actually want to watch it. I told myself I would have to watch part one over to feel the movie, but i could. It was boring. The last scene in part 1 wanted me to watch part 2 but I told myself a movie with part 1 being the way it is, part 2 wont be any different. And I was right.
Dune is cautionary tale about power and manipulation. Oh and fear, destiny, love, revenge, duty, betrayal... It's surely not for a casual audience. It is the kind of world that demands your attention and if you really dive into it with that mindset, you'll find a fantastic story. Every word is part of the puzzle and holds weight in the grand scheme of the greater narrative.

Dune 2 has more action and is much more fast passed, so you will probably like it more. The director himself said that part one is like doing all your homework, explaining who is who and what are their motivations. Both are more of an atmospheric film like Blade Runner, I prefer these sci-fi movies, but it's not for everyone. I feel that movies that jump from spot to spot and try to "keep the action going" become very convoluted with bad story plots and motivations, making me not care for the characters. Like the newer star wars movies, But to each their own.
I didn't read the books either, but back in the days I played Dune 2000 by Westwood Studios and I was sold.

There are a lot of movies that were not for me… at least, not yet. I remember not getting into the LotR trilogy when they were initially released or those comedies in the early 2000s. But now, I like watching them. This can also go the opposite way, I used to like the Harry Potter movies. Now, I still do, but I now prefer the first films. They just remind me of Christmas.

Villenueve added tons of filler to the story its freaking impossible to comprehend unless you're already a Dunerd. Lynch made much tighter version in 1984.

I'm watching the second part tomorrow in theaters, and I have to agree with the not getting "it" or at least not understanding. Like I know the plot because my brother who's a fan and read the books and is also watching part 2 with me explained all of it, and I mean everything. I guess I find it "boring" beacuse it's a mix of well everything I've seen berfore such as Star wars, Marvel and a lot of dystopian type films. But i still have the want to well like it and be a fan Idk. Nice vid btw, can totaly relate
thing is Dune is the og sci fi dystopian, its influence got diluted in other franchises, that's why it feels repeated.
@anonymousinfinido2540 I see, well watched the movie and I've got to say it was really good, from the audio to visuals and even the story and pacing. Everything was pretty good one thing that irked me was probably Chani,s behaviour idk she was really for Paul being a leader but not the prophet of the people. Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong? Not sure...
Chani has trust issues in the movie adaptation, he made changes to the plot, don't know why.@@zibskiii

Watch Part 2 and maybe then see how you like it? It's pretty well made and offers a satisfying conclusion. It also has more action stuff happening in the later half
its fine, it will grow on you, or not. Anyway, dune is one of the best movies of this decade, right after the interstellar

Dune's just the wrong kind of movie for you. It's very pre-Michael-Bay. Marvel is still making movies that you'd probably "get" more.

movie slow as fuck, its a fluff out story about war for resource except it doesn't really talk about said resources but more about character building political power grab these characters have to overcome or be destroy by their political enemies.
yes too much going on from all directions confined into a a 3hr long movie, this movie need multiple episodes just for a prologue
Its not really about a war for resources though, if I understood it correctly. It i more about how people often blindly follow a leader figure which can go very wrong (this is mostly in Part 2). Also Part 1 is more of a prologue and Part 2 is where the real stuff happens imo

@@nilaksh007 Youre talking about the philosophical side. The movies is about resource and why they are at the planet and not some other planet. The leadership would to have to act the way they do and "blindly following the leadership" would not and can not applied since outside environmental traumas and tribulations dictate how people react to one another.
@@maxflorence9370 The thesis of the movie is about the planet dune and its resources of "salt". All the nuances that some people find interesting is the result of the thesis that this movie instilled to the viewers.

Reasons why this guy isn’t into dune:
- deserts suck
- too many good actors because of woke
- keeps soyjaking at the MCU actors
- doesn’t like reading books
- Zendaya too quirked up
- Mr. Beast ate his family
