No crossplay, no online Galactic Conquest, no Steam workshop support, no file compression, etc.. They were aiming for the absolute bare minimum with this, and they still failed.

For my Star Wars fans. There is a game called Squad (2015), there are multiple dedicated Star Wars mod servers running 24/7 pretty sure they are server side mods so you dont have to download anything but the game. The maps are huge and incredible and there is a massive diversity of classes and vehicles. Its essentially Star Wars Arma. If you are looking for a fun multiplayer Star Wars game its the best out there. EA DOES NOT CARE ABOUT US. Luckly its 2024 and passionate people can do EAs job better than EA can. Look up Squad 2015 Star Wars mod i promise it will fill that void.
Why can’t we just get a good Star Wars game though 😩 why is it always a mod. galactic contention is raw asf tho squad in general has been my go to for gaming. Hell let loose for chiller days.
How about no? Modding should never be the answer. Just go back to the older (better versions of the) battlefront games- oh wait, you won't because reasons.
Considering that Valheim is about 1 gigabyte, and Deep Rock Galactic is less than 4 gigs, there's absolutely no excuse for this shit to be over 70 gigs.
Deep rock is more like under 20gb for sure Probably around like 15gb Valheim is under 5gb Download sizes of them are a bit lower then what it actual takes up on your system
I wouldn't say Valheim is a good comparison.... The game looks awful lol. It's been a while but I'm pretty sure the OG battlefront looks nicer than Valheim.

as a Software Engineer myself, I could forgive helldivers not having enough server space on launch. They had no reason to expect as many players as they got. This however, that little server space is actually moronic to think it would have been enough.
The worst bit is, EA were finally making Battlefront II good, it was finally getting somewhere. Then they pulled the plug to work on Battlefield 2042 lmfao. They should've just kept adding more content to Battlefront II...

Funnily enough they really didn’t, the originals work fine on PC and can still be bought for cheaper together. They even have working multiplayer still

Looking at the comments, everything that can be upscaled, was upscaled to 4k. Some dude who's claiming to be a modder says 8k. That kind of stuff can make a lot of hefty bulk quickly. Just compare the MGS3 upscale texture mod file sizes over on Nexusmods

The sad thing is, there was a battlefront 3 in development by pandemic studios. In the middle of development, they released a video showcasing the ability to fly from surface battles up into space. No loading, you could just go surface to space. Then they were bought out and shut down
There is a thing in the film industry of completing a movie even though studios think it may not be profitable only to cancel it at the end to get insurance money. I think games studios are doing the same thing now
When the original battlefront was released, I worked for the datacenter that Lucasarts partnered with to launch ranked servers. We had just developed a platform for rapid server deployment, and this was our first real test. Deploy 300 or so servers for a single customer. This sounds like nothing compared to today’s level of deployment, but back then, getting 300+ physical servers online and running their custom configurations was a massive deal. And we pulled it off in the timeframe they demanded. But yeah, 300+ servers then, and 3 now? WTF. Yeah, they might not have needed 300+ again, but that’s not the point. Lucasarts knew better, and whoever launched this was just negligent.
Thank you, and everyone else on the team, for the hard work in providing an incredible customer experience for these games in the 2000s. I really ought to show my appreciation more for those that were there in the thick of things and working their asses off, god knows how underappreciated these guys worked.

For those of you who don’t know, Aspyr is a company that Star Wars gets sent to to die. There was another game I used to play called Star Wars Commander, a clash of clans style mobile game that was actually amazing when it had its creator developer team in charge. Basically they sold the rights to Aspyr and the quality of life changes that brought made the game nearly unplayable, so they have a ‘record’.
They don't just have any record. They have a 20 year track record of garbage ports. Its kind of a feat that aspyr keeps doing this and people don't realize its just how they operate.
Show EA & everyone else this list Actual Improvements that should’ve been made -Add in B1 Battle Droid from BF1 into BF2 (Space Marine during Space Battles is the only thing close) -Add in 1st Person Vehicle HUD from BF1 into BF2 (mods accomplished this very task easily) -FOV Slider for both games, 1st & 3rd Person -Add some more BF1 maps into BF2 (Rhen Var: Citadel & Harbor & Bespin: Cloud City maps were from BF1 & were successfully ported into BF2. Tattoine: Dune Sea, Kashyyyk Docks & Islands, Bespin: Platforms, Geonosis: Spire) -Actually better graphics & 60FPS, Better color saturation like BF1 (BF2 lighting & graphics should replicate BF1. More vibrant blue & red lasers. BF1 is superior in that aspect) -FIX THE AI TARGETING & PATHFINDING in BF2!! -XL mode (Obviously) -Fix different audio cues for BF2 (Award sounds are annoying-should be able to turn off, loud lightsaber ignition, Clone’s rifle sounds bad till this day) -Ability to turn off visual aura from Awards (Guardian’s blue aura, War Hero’s red aura cover Sniper class scope) -Add in unlock all option for Awards or specific Awards, Unlimted Stamina & Jetpack cheats for BF2 -Cross-Era Faction Battles (CIS vs Empire or Clones vs Rebels, etc.) (Also ability to revert clones to Phase 1 counterparts in BF2, on any map) -Order 66 gamemode for BF2 (Like in 501st Campaign Coruscant Mission) -Give BF2 Clones EMP & Concussion grenades from BF1 -Let ppl choose to have DC-15S Carbine or DC-15A Rifles as primary weapons for Clones in BF2 (PC Mods do this perfectly) -Pick & choose which heroes are playable on each map -Friendly AI heroes during Instant Action
@@spike1269I think they just heavily delayed the KOTOR remake they’ve been working on a day ago… that’s maybe either a bad sign or gives them more time to actually work more on the game….
No one should be surprised by this. It was developed by Aspyr, the same company that could not put out the KOTOR II restored content DLC for Switch when it was already a fully baked and functional mod.
The reason for that seems to be because of legal reasons and not development. They gave me a free game if you bought KOTOR II before the restored content being cancelled (Switch has no refunds, so I got Force Unleashed for free). However, the state of Battlefront Classic is indefensible.
It’s wild seeing this, Iv been emulating the battlefront games on pcsx and it’s a blast even with moderate AI. The fact they truly went for the bare minimum is extremely telling of the game industry when it comes to exploiting our nostalgia.
These huge companies can't even relaunch a premade game now. Meanwhile somewhere a kid resurrects and emulates an old game working flawlessly, singlehandedly. And makes it work on a smartwatch or something just for kicks.
""now""? - Son. May I introduce you to the fucking dumbster fire that is called "WC3 - Reforged"? Literally did downgrade on every single aspect, besides graphic. Lied about upgrading the campagne with new, real cutscenes. Rather than those ingame ""cinemematics"". Fumbled so hard that you literally couldn´t play the campaigne for about three months. Fucked up servers for a while. And the absolute most fucking atrocious act of them all: Removed the support for the old servers etc. Resulting in a complete nuke of the - Still insanely high - custom maps playerbase of a two decades old game. You could go online at any point in NA or EU and you´d have tons of full lobbys. For tons of different maps. Now it doesn´t matter when and where you go. There are like 20 lobbys for the same 4 game modes. And most ain´t even getting filled.
It’s actually crazy because all they basically needed to do was take all the good mods, package it, make sure it works on modern hardware and have some servers (even just implementing p2p) and it would have been worth it. Crazy that it feels like nothing was done
24gb of movie files since they are upscaled too to 8k, textures are 8k ai upscaled which results in most maps = being over 1gb per map = 30 maps = 30-35gb (i think there are more than 30, but some are pretty small & only 500mb big) the textures do look pretty sharp and high res but doesnt help the fact that the textures are old - so the campaign is okay but the most important part being the mp, its unplayable (bf1 is better but still has issues) - heard console like switch dont face as many issues as the pc version like the lag
@@C3l3bi1 well thats the downside when u have AI upscaled uncompressed high bitrate stuff, though crysis doesnt have 1:1 movie scenes, but idk why they had to 8k upscale everything when 4k would have been prob enough
From a cs perspective, the team assigned to the project may have not been experienced enough. Older games are usually written in older languages and don’t used modern programming techniques (object oriented languages, patterns, etc.) you can tell because of the sever functionality. Older games didn’t know how to have scalable internet until new network protocols came around. It looks like they didn’t update the code for new networking. I’m also just guessing so idk.
nah dude, once you work in development you'll understand. This is just disrespect of the customer and simply not caring about doing good work. This product was obviously not even QA'd more than cursory check for crashing on launch of the executable. And as is routine now with these garbage releases, in all likelihood the blame should be placed on pathetic management and not the development team.
We didn't ignore it that was like the biggest piece of news about it pre release we just hoped that the game would be good enough to retain player bases on each system for at least a cpl of years...
When you don't know where the size comes from, there's 95% chance it's the textures. And as a reminder: every time you double the resolution of the texture - you make the disk size 4 times bigger (because textures have horizontal and vertical size, so 1024x1024 is 4 times bigger than 512x512, and 4k is 4 times bigger than 2k). They also probably didn't do any quality control. Like, surely you don't need 4k (or even 2k, for that matter) on anything but most important stuff, such as First-Person weapon models or some characters in cutscenes. Most likely explanation is that they just upscaled EVERY texture to 4k and left it at that. So yes, there's a very high chance that there's random rock on Naboo that has a 4k texture and some excessive polygon count.
Also upscaled by just dragging the corner on the images, since it's not like they added new crisp textures, normals or whatever, at least they wouldn't LOOK like 20yr old games
I don’t think a lot of people actually played this game prior to this collection being released, I have consistently played both original battlefronts since they were released two decades ago since I was a kid, this game is no different than it was twenty years ago, the multiplayer issues that people are whining about were issues back in the day as well, just because the games are added to new gems doesn’t mean they will magically run better, these games need to be completely remade in an up to date fashion for that, so pretty much the people that whine about it being forty dollars and the multiplayer not running like Cod MW3, have pretty much ripped themselves off because they didn’t know what the product was and that don’t understand how technology works. Now I do agree with the cutscenes glitches, they shouldn’t have released the game with buggy ending cutscenes but again when you’ve played the game for two decades you kind of don’t care about stuff like that.
@@RamblingGreek Yeah and how did it run? Last I checked it still runs like garbage on PC even to this day. I played it once but I would never redownload it because Koboh runs at 30fps even now on max PC specs.
I just cringe at the thought of them using .wav files for the Audio. Back when I used that for music production in the early 2000s, it was insane space. Like 27mb for a 6 second clip
4K textures would require them to manually upscale every texture for the original game. Those files simply wouldn't exist in 4K for a game developed 20 years ago.
Storage capacity on hard drives has been revolutionized only for everything to go full circle and we still have the same amount of games on those drives.
Bro I was just joking about this with my boy the other day, like I have a fucking terabyte ssd and can hold like 7 games. A terabyte used to be an almost incomprehensible amount of space, it’s nothing now

@@nathanwinsor7 It's because of textures. Games have much higher resolution textures now than they did ten years ago, and that makes up the majority of a game's filesize
They also revolutionized GPUs to 4090 levels, and newer games are only running 60fps on them, the exact same thing. Devs need to optimize their fucking shit.
As a dev, game size is going wild in part due to libraries are re-usable code. Means they can ship games out super fast and be efficient and keep costs lower. But guaranteed they package and ship with libraries/frameworks/engines that might only get used 10-50%, the remining is just unused. It's only getting increasingly worse as games needs to support evermore technologies that get released. Many studios re-use engines and assets for multiple games, which makes sense. But if things needs to be changed or rendered, or anything... then they need to tack on more code or they add it to the engine for the next game to inherit. So yes, a simple game that maybe needs the 50% of the function/feature of the current engine will just be made with that engine and 50% will go unused. Same for asset packs, rendering, libraries, etc etc. Also ya not compressing things rip.
Ive not played the multiplayer, I played single player for nostalgia reasons, naboo is missing textures where there are invisible walls, they fixed nothing with the ai, so when you land the ship that gives you a spawn point on the enemy cruiser, the ai will spawn on the ship, and then decide it is a good idea to fly the ship out of the cruiser and into the wall, blowing up your respawn point. Ive been trying to enjoy it regardless because truth be told, this is going to be the best that we get, we dont get good games anymore, even big name titles like star wars and lord of the rings just kind of seem to depend on “they already know this franchise so theyll buy this, we dont have to do work to make money, the game sells itself” I hope that the team can “No Man’s Sky” this game because i have such good memories of this game

I've said it since 2002: too many software are made with the idea a greater PC capabilities mean less need to worry about efficient use of resources. Before: "we need this to fit in a few GB because nobody has more than 20GB", now "people have TB disks, so why bother trying to make our files smaller? They'll fit even if we leave everything uncompressed". From "why try to make this done in three lines of code and three CPU cycles" to "CPU speeds allow to leave it at one thousand lines and five hundred cpu cycles and still run smooth".
Doing something in an arbitrary amount of lines isn’t the issue. It’s the time and memory complexity where it starts to break down. Software from the past required actual professionals since you couldn’t just Google everything away. Nowadays you have clowns that rely purely on Chat GPT (so it’s not going to get any better).
@@andrewroe5367Exactly. This reminds me of a video I watched the other day about retro futurism. The people that made the video thought the future was going to usher in an era of greatness, ease, and near total perfection. Everything was pretty much automated and required little to no effort to do. But within the first 5 minutes of the video, I knew it was all bs because there were no fat people. Everyone was thin. Ain't no way. I don't think people quite grasp with full understanding about what the "future" may bring. People conveniently forget about the associated downsides while solely focusing on the upsides. And when people only do that, they're doomed from the beginning. I think you're absolutely right, back then software development was done by real professionals, in every sense of the word. Now, it's done by people that were educated in schools and universities that are more interested in indoctrination than education.
Software engineering is much like the gaming industry. It’s now just SHIT IT OUT as fast as you can and not polish anything so there’s no need for optimization

The size is probably a result of them upscaling all of the textures, not compressing them, and refusing to use compressed audio. Games companies are waaaay too comfortable doing this. In 2005 the original Battlefront used compression for all of the data since discs could only hold 5 to 10 gb at most.

its honestly sad, i bought bulllet storm and just cause back in 2012 on a wim because they looked fun, no issues; Not amazing games but delivered on what they said, now every purchase feels like a risky buisness venture, need to reserch the history of the comapny and scour reddit for legit feedback.
I stopped my self at the fucking price tag and the comparison shots between the ogs and the remastered ones. Just can't shell out $35 for little differences
I see a lot of people saying "give it time, they'll fix this", but honestly they won't. This was a nostalgia-driven pre-order scam from the get-go, they did the minimal amount necessary for it to "qualify" as a playable game, and they're just going to dog doo-doo everything after launch because this was never about giving the gamers and consumers what they want, it was about seeing how many people's money they could take on a "promise" to deliver nostalgia. If 100% of the player base isn't demanding refunds this very moment, and keeps naively hoping beyond all hope that they will fix something that should have never had these issues to begin with, they're just going to keep on scamming you and robbing your money.
It's even more ridiculous when you realize that, to my knowledge, the original battlefront and battlefront 2 servers are still up, and functioning quite well given the age. People can quite literally mod their own battlefront remastered for free, and save 60gbs of storage
“ give it time “ is the biggest bullshit move like no we are spending the money to play the game it should release in a playable and satisfactory state end of there should be no argument on this. It’s plainly unacceptable

I wonder why so many games recently are dog shit and why so many games are dog shit at launch?
Pre order has and always will be a scam, there’s only two game company’s I actually trust to release a game that actually works and that’s from soft ware and rockstar, rockstar milk gta 5 yes but every single game they have released has been bang for you buck and no issues, from software are still in the mindset of you pay for the game and we include everything in it for you to unlock, amazing game companies, unlike 98% of the industry nowadays most of it is cash grabs and scams sadly

In addition to the things you mentioned, they also used AI to upscale the textures and it caused the file size to bloat out of control and they still have errors and don't look very good. The worst is the stolen (outdated) mods from community modders with no permission and no credit given. They just had to bring classic battlefront down to the level of their newer titles, that's all.
Oh my god, I just discovered that they simply batched upscaled all textures. There is a white.tga texture that's just the colour white, and they upscaled that too. Meaning they multiplied every texture altogether and called it a day. They put absolutely 0 effort.
AI shouldn't cause the file sizes to bloat, it's just a means of generating the texture (unless they specified a high res and didn't downscale it), seems like they just didn't compress anything properly

I got this game for my PS5 because I’m away from my friends and conveniently my mate just got his and I wanted to remote play split screen the game but the game’s textures are also bugged and ruined. :(
It's as simple as this: they wanted more money, easy money, so they took these old ass games to take advantage of peoples nostalgia. The most ideal pricing would be a $20 package thousands of people would buy but no one's gonna buy just 1 of those old ass games for 20 whole dollars. So they made it a package of 2 games for like $30 dollars to make it look like a good deal.

The only reason I would pick it up is for offline galactic conquest, but from what I've seen it doesn't look like enough of an improvement to make it worth it. The reason for the "bloat" is they make systems for people who don't understand allocating and optimization. It's the same issue in my field where they hired a bunch of computer science people for engineer jobs and the two jobs are not the same. Making things more accessible to a larger audience to build things has made it so systems need to be much more robust and excessive.

Great explanation - I was wondering!
Also upscaled by just dragging the corner on the images, since it's not like they added new crisp textures, normals or whatever, at least they wouldn't LOOK like 20yr old games
Bro did not optimise their game 💀 Mfers think they garten of banban
Ground textures can also benefit from a substantial upscale, since those things look pretty bad at lower resolutions.

Uncompressed audio/video files and 4k textures probably the reason why its such a file size, modern devs refuse to optimize their games
Heck the bf1 loading screens got ai upscaled to 8k 😭
I just cringe at the thought of them using .wav files for the Audio. Back when I used that for music production in the early 2000s, it was insane space. Like 27mb for a 6 second clip
A lot of stuff is mixed 24/48 now too, those are big wavs. That plus 4k textures, that’ll do it.
4K textures would require them to manually upscale every texture for the original game. Those files simply wouldn't exist in 4K for a game developed 20 years ago.
Ah yes. Once again developers being blamed for something they don't have control over.
Storage capacity on hard drives has been revolutionized only for everything to go full circle and we still have the same amount of games on those drives.

It’s layers of toxic consumerism if you will
@@nathanwinsor7yeah lmao u just upgraded to 4tb

This needs more attention, ive been thinking this for a while
Doing something in an arbitrary amount of lines isn’t the issue. It’s the time and memory complexity where it starts to break down. Software from the past required actual professionals since you couldn’t just Google everything away. Nowadays you have clowns that rely purely on Chat GPT (so it’s not going to get any better).

Imma be completely honest i was hyped as hell to see this game was 70+ gigs cause that should have meant theyd be adding much more than the stuff they promised but after playing the game a bit in both single player and multiplayer im really dissatisfied with how it turned out
Problems ive noticed:
1 the AI seems to be lacking intelligence or at least the intelligence they once had and ill find them kissing walls or covering their shame in a corner most dont do this but there are some ive seen that do and its on every map
2 The settings arent as much as youd expect such a large game to have on top of that stuff like the sensitivity doesnt really work you also cant change the invert on ship controls
3 To add insult to injury if you change the movement controls for the ships itll be set back to its original settings when you sprint and then revert back to what you set it to when you stop
4 Blocking doesnt block lightsabers anymore so most jedi you can just bum rush if you get the first hit it wouldnt be that bad if it werent for the AI abusing this on renvar citadel and absolutely destroying my team we still won though cause palpatine and dooku still dont use their lightsabers on normal and the only thing heros ever do is spam throw lightsaber unless theyre 2ft in front of someone
5 Like charlie mentioned earlier in the video there are audio problems in the game now and they dont stop at earrape from time to time theyll deepen or rise in pitch the longer a game goes on i played on the yavin arena for maybe half an hour rocket spamming bots as chewy and on multiple occasions id hear a deep sounding princes leia or han solo spouting one of their VL alternatively the droids pitch can increase at times not sure if its just them or if it works with other infantry too
6 Headphones are not a welcomed addition to battlefront 2 either there are many issues i have with hearing someone behind me only to realize they were easily halfway across the map to my right and in a completely separate room not to mention when im a similar distance away from a warzone i can hear every bullet being fired and every grenade exploding (this also has a chance to earrape you)
7 Cheats still work but there are 2 new ones that being low poly soldiers and comic effects both will last through matches and wont deactivate until turned off manually
8 I played on the ps5 version with my friend and while i didnt experience much lag due to being the host my friend did he also had to rejoin the game every time a match would complete and sometimes it would crash
I dont want to say the game is unplayable cause you can still play singleplayer and get all the benefits but in the day and age of online play being a must for games like this its something that can render it unplayable to most
I just hope they deliver some hotfixes for this
This will never stop, you have to bankrupt these major companies to get them to learn, only when they are closing their doors will they learn.
