- A huge conversation has been had over the last year or so regarding quiet luxury vs loud luxury and the general 'old money' aesthetic, but I think more recently it's peaked in popularity with more brands producing 'recession-core' looks and focusing on timeless pieces. Unless it happens to be your true style. I’m not old money but when I see people using luxury to be seen I cringe.
There's no reason to shame people who are into that aesthetic. Why is it the most prettiest, intriguing things are left exclusively to the wealthiest - ask yourself? Being lower class doesn't mean you haven't got taste or eyes that enjoy seeing pretty things. From gorgeous, intricate private gardens to architecture that's very artistic to views from the upper floors of sky scrapers.... Even things like cinema and television and phones were once only afforded by the rich. Things like capturing your childhood in pictyand videos this new generation don't know how good they have it. Coming from a poorer world I barely had baby photos and no videos. Yet there's UA-cam videos of someone capturing their highschool experience in the 80's and 70's. I don't think we should look down on people enjoying the old money aesthetic. To call it new money thing is elitism and snobbery if it was coming from an old money person just bc they don't like sharing their spaces.

Interesting video. First timer on this site. What I found interesting here is quiet luxury. A sort of minimalism; classic color choices, quality fabrics, RL ads. That all sounds y good to me. Good taste acquired over the years of making choices and experimenting with our individual preferences, we find personal style. Thank you for this discussion. Lots to think about.
The “old money” aesthetic is so popular on social media right now, that when I see it, I assume the person is just playing dress up as the heir/heiress that they aren’t. 😂

These are Americans with no clue, frankly. Even Actual American Old Money get it wrong in hilarious fashion often enough. The American Old Money everything, is them copying the "English College Look" - as Ralph Lauren ALWAYS did, & of course, that's just the look & habits of the English Nobility & our Upper Classes. This particular girl is not the person yo explain it - & moreover, WHY is YT showing me this! As a matter of fact the head of Hermès was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight and she moaned about not finding a bag to accomodate all the stuff a mum needs. Hence the bag which was originally large and made of leather more supple than the Kelly. She was gifted some which she has always treated as regular canvas bags so they are indeed in a sorry state. But that was the whole point!

I love having a loud luxury moment, but I would just caution the young adults out there that your workplace isn't necessarily the best place to wear them! Just because your outfit is expensive does not make it business professional attire

Also, be careful of people in the workplace who are jealous and even managers who will use the (stupid) logic that you do not need a salary raise because you will only spend it on luxury, or do not need the money or any other prejudice / assumption.
@@s.a.4358 Or pure envy that sometimes leads usually nice people to taunting behaviour. A friend of a friend of mine is married to an accountant that does the book kepping of his parents firm. She still has her job as a textile worker. Her parents in law decided to give their son an old used Mercedes instead of selling the car to a used dealership. She felt a tremendous change of behaviour towards her, in a really bad way, from her superior in the factory. It was in line with "maybe you don't need to work here, you are so well off and we're paying you". TKOS

We actually discontinued that bag late last year and have replaced it with our Frances bag. It’s ironically more “quite luxury.”
Wondering how they would or if they would really want to. The show depicts them as "new money" but they seem to want to emphasize their heritage brand status which is more of an old money thing. Idk how they could spin this and turn the joke around lol. One brand I could see hopping on the trend is telfar with their notoriously capacious bags lol. And they definitely wouldn't wanna be seen as old money quiet luxury.
To me the real "Old money" aesthetic was always the "Quiet Luxury" because it is about quality fabrics, tailoring, having great posture, manners, vocabulary and being able to discuss a diversity of subjects.
Yes!!! The “Old Money” esthetic is about appropriately dressing. It is also about being comfortable in different situations. And being kind. But one thing about Old Money, they have people to take care of their clothes - or they do it . And it’s not that they don’t care if something is ruined by you spilling wine on their cashmere - they should be well mannered enough to not concentrate on the item damaged but make you feel ok and not as though you ruined them financially.
I think Ferragamo is also a good old money / quiet luxury brand with a modern take. The quality of their pieces is impeccable. :)

To be fair some Ferragamo is good and some great but, the shoes are poorly made especially at their price point...John Lobb or Crockett and Jones are far superior in their craftsmanship. At a lower price point Thursday Boots and Cobbler Union.
As someone with "no money" I still enjoy timeless pieces. I have found it more important to wear what flatters me. Such as going by my color analysis, fit, etc. I also love vintage for it's uniqueness. It's very likely no one else in the world will have the same pieces.
This is sooooo interesting! My older lady experience is it’s the STRIVING for the “old money” aesthetic that’s kind of sad. If quiet and minimalist is one’s comfort zone (that’s me), good on you; but if bright or quirky or shouty fills your life with joy and zip, lean into it and enjoy every minute. I LOVE watching other women (and men) figuratively strut their stuff, no holds barred. Conversely, I have no time at all for folks who sniff dismissively at a certain style because of a “new money” connotation. The whole point of fashion is putting an outward appearance on your inner self. I do, however, draw the line at Teletubbies footwear. No, just no. ❤

Striving, especially doing so in a perceivable way, is the most vulgar thing to actual “old money” people too. People should wear what they want, but looking like you’re trying too hard to look like a caricature of a wealthy person gives the opposite of what it’s supposed to give…
Agree! I do like colour in life in general, but my personal style is more neutral, soft colours, minimal-ish and comfort / practicality over fashion statement. I also try to have all my clothes and accessories go with each other as much as possible versus having statement pieces that only go with certain looks. So logos, bold prints and colours are not something I buy usually (except for earrings as I love bold earrings). Do do not at all think those things are tacky or ugly. In fact I love watching Cassie and other content creators and often think items looks nice (LV bags especially…they have so many things I find pretty) but I can appreciate the aesthetic while preferring to buy something else for myself. Iris Appel is a good example. That lady looks amazing and I love how she expresses herself through her style, but it is not something I will replicate.

All I can say is choose what you enjoy and stop buying to impress others.
I’m surrounded by people that have some generational wealth and the idea the live by is “I’m rich so I don’t have to prove that to anyone”, who believe in quality over name. Which, by the way, it’s not a bad idea, being judged by how much luxury you have shouldn’t be a thing, many people think that to be important you have to prove that you have luxury things, otherwise you’re a poor person that can’t afford that. No. Please. Have fun and buy what you want, what is good for you and what makes you feel like a boss.
Given the problem with fast fashion , I would always encourage ppl to invest in quality pieces , look after and repair them if they can . Also Cassie I love how much Britishness is still in you 😂 love to see it ❤

Love the fact you are forthright in your opinions but they are also considered. The message you are saying which I agree is be who you want to be and not be ashamed- old or new money who cares as long as you are you and you are happy- wish I could go to a party with old money I would scream not old money nor new money but no money and working class and proud
People don't wear clothes long enough to damage them, so fast fashion is good enough. Good quality is more resilient etc so what it will never be needed. People buy new clothes to feel better not because they need it.
Unfortunately, as a POC, having an old money aesthetic is a great weapon for getting basic social respect, appropriate service at restaurants/stores, and better perception in the workplace. I do love the old money look (read: plain & simple) as it’s my comfort zone. It reminds me how good my grandparents looked at formal events.
But sometimes I also want to have those things while wearing my “trashy” got-this-from-an-NY-thriftstore look. 😂I’m still hesitant about my *obnoxious* pink ultra-puffy sleeve and garden print skirt. People get so snobby when you look *wild or trashy*, even if you’re wearing luxury.

My paternal grandma was ALWAYS "dressed to kill!" I really raided her closet on a regular basis from 6th grade on up 😂. She was always classy and sophisticated looking, but she also always had some sort of statement piece. This continued until she had a house fire after she retired and she was never quite able to build her wardrobe back up on her much reduced income. But whenever I get dressed up to go somewhere, I find myself asking myself "Would Grandma wear this with this?" I can't help it😂😂😂
This is an aspect that people don’t acknowledge. For marginalized groups, dressing in this aesthetic leads to more respectability and opportunities at upward mobility. Sad way of the world but it’s a reality. If people perceive you to be wealthy, they interact with you in a completely different manner than if you were just normal.
As a person of color, this spoke to me and totally summarized my experiences with the old money aesthetic!

Quiet luxury isn't expensive. And it isn't clothing. Magazines are just trying to sell people on high ticket items in a recession. It's literally always been there and isn't a price tag. It's like, taking time off for family.

This is so, so true! I do like the look, but I also like logos and y2k pieces. The problem I have with the “old money” is aesthetic is that often times it’s not organic. It’s choosing pieces that will look that way and it’s restrictive. I suck at explaining things, but instead of “omg I LOVE this bag” it’s “ok this will make me look old money”.
When someone is 'trying' to do something, such as trying to look old money, they aren't. lol Old money folks aren't trying. They have no idea and do not give a hoot about identifying particular clothing pieces.

I find quiet luxury so interesting! I totally understand the idea behind buying something that’s classic and neutral that you can wear time and time again but I don’t understand why people will pay $500+ for basics like a button up shirt when there’s no flare or exciting element and you can get it must cheaper and just as good quality elsewhere. I’d say my style is a bit of an old luxury/new money fusion but I can more easily justify spending money on pretty and unique pieces than basics✨

When I was in my 20s, I was all about the loud logos. Now that I’m in my 40s, I’m all about the IYKYK aesthetic. I still have my Neverfull GM because that is the perfect travel bag and I’m all about convenience. But for the most part, my clothes/bags/ shoes are all on the “quiet” side. Now that I’m older, I make more money, but I don’t want to advertise it to everyone. 😂

Although I appreciate quiet luxury, and would love one day to have the means to replace every last piece in my closet with $500 plain white t-shirts and the like, I’m still more of a shouty/statementy logo-y person at my core. Like, if I spent the money, you’re going to know because you’ll be able to see the crystals, the logo, and the colors from outer space. 😂❤💰

I don’t think dressing in an old money aesthetic is automatically encouraging elistim because at the end of the day it’s just a style. It’s the behaviour of people who think by choosing to wear that aesthetic means they are above others, that are in the wrong. I like a lot of elements that fall under ‘old money’, though I don’t say I had made any conscious elements to do that, but it doesn’t define my personality at all. I just prefer less logos, sharp lines and block colours 😂
Old money loves to gatekeep that's why they get snobbery if you start owning what they own. Yet the prettiest of things in the world, from architecture, to gardens, to clothes (haute couture) has been exclusive for the wealthy. They genuinely consume very aesthetic things, why wouldn't working money not gravitate or enjoy them either? Don't people go to art shows and theatre?. People who dress that esthetic whether cosplaying or just liking the clothes doesn't even matter. To aspire to be old money or daydream about it there's nothing wrong. Better than the tacky dressing of the current times. There's just a level of harmony and naturalness in old money aesthetic - like more natural makeup - that celebrates nature and people in the skin they were born in why new money is destroying every aspect of what you were born with: plastic fake nails, false lashes the size of a caterpillar, plastic procedures that ruin your natural form (bums, boobs, and lip filler) and that harsh heavy makeup from conturing just to name a few
No matter what you wear, you either HAVE old money or you don’t, so wear what you love. ❤ SM and influencers have caused these false narratives to be exaggerated and I’m so over it. Do you! 😘

I hate the snobbery that exists within the “old money” aesthetic people. People need to understand that all they’re glorifying elitism. It often comes across as racist in some contexts.
I dont necessarily think they are pro elitism. At least normal people like this aesthetic because its not flashy and obnoxious. For example imagine how your all logo obviously expensive clothes would make a broke not so glamorously dressed person feel? I like it because dressing discreetly wont put someone around you down, wont make them feel insecure in your presence. But thats my personal opinion tho not everybody agrees. Also its often times just better fitted therefore looks more flattering. Flashy brands don't usually accentuate on good fitting they're more about sales. But the main reason for me why dressing in no logo is good because of the feelings of others who cant afford it

Both are chic! As I get older, I’m gravitating more towards quiet luxury but no denying a good logo will steal my heart real quick. I think my biggest thing is I hate mixing loud pieces from different brands. It feels cheaper to me.

The minimalism is not deliberate, people starved during the Great Depression in England too. It wasn't sparse out of some Zoomer aesthetic vanity, but necessity. As a WASP, they make us sick.

It’s about natural fabrics in stylish cuts with quality craftsmanship in timeless style. This is practical. The connotations are artificial and incidental.
I've always loved the "rich lady going to a country club" fashion look, but I'll never be a quiet luxury bag girl - I love a really bold statement-y bag.
Also, a lot of people I know have been choosing to dress in a more quiet luxury way for safety reasons these days - not sure if that's a reason the trend is taking off, but I've been hearing a lot about that lately. It might partially be paranoia, but a lot of people I know are afraid that dressing flashy with the economy the way it is right now could make them a target for theft, so they're not wearing obvious prints like Louis Vuitton that everyone would recognize as being from a luxury house.
“Ludicrously capacious” killed me, but I did always think of the tiny bag trend as a wealth signifier - it says “I don’t need to carry anything on me; I go from the car to the front door and others hold things for me.” TBE has grown into its own thing, but that’s where I saw the origins of the trend. And one can’t fit their flats for the subway or lunch pail in a tiny bag 😂
I often wondered of the tiny bag trend us more if a USA thing. I live in Europe where a lot of people do not have cars or use their car every day, so small bags are not practical for daytime especially if one works outside the home.
I love how you're all about new money bc it's different and exciting to us AND you have impeccable styling skills, which means we can still relate to you. I'm much more of a minimalist, for example, but you inspire me to wear more colour again. Even if it's just a bag or a pair of sunglasses. Thanks for that 😘

The things that get me excited about fashion are the colours, textures and fit, I do think that some brands got too comfy slapping a logo on uninspiring things and asking for money and on the flip side I sometimes find quiet luxury to be devoid of colour and personality especially when someone is just following an aesthetic. Just wearing what you love looks the best imo
I think that there is a difference between true 'old money' and 'quiet luxury'. Mary Kate and Ashley have obviously mastered 'quiet luxury', but they are not 'old money'. If you are truly 'old money', you generally inherited it from your family, you didn't earn it. You just happen to have been born into it and can afford to pay exorbitant amounts of money for items that no one would recognize, other than other people who also happened to be born into 'old money'. 'New money' can also buy the 'old money' aesthetic through brands that produce 'quiet luxury'. And the Olsen twin that was carrying the beat-up Hermes bag, what was that all about? Is she trying to say that she has 20 more in her mansion? The whole situation is laughable!

I always believed real wealth wore custom trailed made clothing that went beyond trend. A well-made well fitted dress somehow now, it means expensive off the wrack even if it's designer. You can make a cheap outfit look amazing if it is tailored to your shape. Go to Asian as just see how many tailors and dress makers are around. Not so much here in the US.

If you have a generous trust fund, or if you already live on government benefits, then you don't have to worry. The rest of us have to account for the tastes of the people we work for. Also family members to whom we may be accountable. And the potential in-laws. Great video! Interesting topic. I love luxury (I’m subscribed to this channel so duh) and I love pieces from both. I tend to lean toward “old money” brands but I also love brands such as Versace… I just buy what I love!
For me it’s not just for style, it’s a safety issue. I can wear luxury that is “you know you know” and not worry about being mugged or robbed because someone saw me in a recognizable brand. It just also happens that “quiet luxury” I can style more easily for everyday and is more my aesthetic. While “loud luxury” tends to be more statement pieces where I am wearing them for a moment.

I honestly could care less about the “old money” aesthetic. I love to see people wear what they love and what excites them! Additionally, old money isn’t accessible to ~90% of the world given that extreme wealth at that level was often built on the backs of others and inherited through generations. Cosplaying as old money is of no interest to me! 😅

When I was much younger I had my fun with logos & pieces that made a bit of a statement. I’m now finding myself drawn to everything understated or pieces I make myself out of the beautiful fabric I have collected (I trained as a tailor before I went to uni). Luxury fashion should be about truely loving the items you are wearing, whatever the aesthetic.

I loved this video! I've actually found myself thinking about this a lot over the last several months. On one hand, I love and appreciate those who gravitate toward the "new money" aesthetic with the bold patterns and bright colors. It's loud and interesting and NEVER boring, and I love that. On the other hand, my personal taste leans more towards the "old money" aesthetic - I'm drawn to the neutrals and the quiet for myself. Not that I have old money and can afford quiet luxury 😂 but I'm just drawn to the look. However, I do not at all care for the snobbery/racism/elitism that goes with it.

My aesthetic is a mix but I’m definitely “new money” by definition. My family had a lot of wealth several generations ago but lost it during the Spanish American war. We became primarily laborers after we lost our land & livestock in Southern Texas. My husband is an anesthetist & I’m a fine artist & we’re doing alright. I honestly don’t give a crap about new or old because u can simply lose it all
I love small luxury items, and l love using a plain bag. It's a personal choice because I travel and I love being able to wash my bags whenever they get dirty. I dress plain but I think the only thing noticeable are my sneakers lol. I love all different styles and if you're being exclusionary I feel like you're missing out on a lot of takes on fashion. Fun video! Love it :) In my younger days, I loved being different and flamboyant. I would have worn loud fashion all day long. I'm older now though, and my taste has definitely changed. The quiet luxury scene better suits me now. Now I love wearing expensive clothing/jewelry/watches that are, as Cassies says, if you know - you know. Classy, quality items that will last you for years. You'd never catch me in logo clothing these days. As someone who has now been around the fashion scene for about 4 decades, I say have fun wearing what you want. Find your own style, and let your tastes evolve with time.
I am definitely a "no money" kind of a gal, but I quite like the "old money", i.e. "what adults wore in the 80s" aesthetic and especially the fact that it is readily available in the thrift store.
I just turned 33, and I find that I gravitate towards ‘quit, minimalistic luxury’
But I’m also slowly getting to know more brands, that are not worth it. Getting really tired of bad quality and lazy designs, with logos everywhere.
I am sure that more small businesses will see growth, because they are often more interesting and socially responsible.

I worked with a woman who had a giant Birkin that she used as a work bag. I was gobsmacked but she was/is old ass money and she wore it well. I’m a LV girl and I am a leather bag snob. I have canvas but I use them like she used her Birkin. I have tiny, little, still got the plastic on it money 😂
Yes the main thing is that you actually WEAR the bags and they fit in with your clothes and lifestyle. Too often it's a fantasy purchase for a life that people are not actually living. In that case you risk looking silly and out of place wherever you try to go, I try to dress appropriately and have some fun with it as well. Some might say I'm trying to look quiet luxury but the truth is I"m making my wardrobe work hard and that's just 'sensible money'.
My clothes LOOK quiet luxury but I am not mad at a logo purse. We can’t we be both? 😊

I had to LOL when I saw the clip of the woman at the party carrying the Burberry tote. It reminded me of one day, about 25 years ago, while in Beverly Hills and a woman and a man were crossing the same street as I was crossing. They were both in formal wear, the woman in a beautiful ankle-length flowing light-color evening gown and the man in a tuxedo. Then, I looked and noticed what handbag the woman was carrying......a large LV monogram speedy. Yikes! I thought I was going to pass out. Jesus take the wheel! Mais non! I thought to myself, "Why didn't she just go to TJ Maxx and buy an appropriate handbag to go with her evening gown?

I think I’m definitely more old money in aesthetic, but not because I’m a big fan of IYKYK or the elitism associated. More because I feel a bit uncomfortable wearing logos and having people in my life recognize how much money I spend on fashion. I come from an immigrant family who would FAINT if they knew how much money I was spending, even though I have a good job and am capable of affording these things. I love the quality and design of luxury, not necessarily the logo. But that’s just me, and I very much admire the people who can rock the head to toe logo look because slayyyy. I just can’t get MYSELF to do it.

I like classic styles and have always dressed that way because it’s what I grew up with and I like the aesthetic, the cut and feel of the clothes. I’m not old money and would never claim to be. Quite the opposite, I have tremendous pride in overcoming the struggles of my “lean” years and feel like that should be part of everyone’s education so they know what it feels like. I like your channel because you have a contagious enthusiasm for fashion that’s fun. What I don’t like is preening and pretending. Your attitude is character, the other is surface.
