One little titbit on this - Logan leaves Colin (his security guy) a Rolex Daytona Lapis in his unsigned will in S4E1 - it's not mentioned, but fans found it by zooming in on the note that's shown on screen. That's a 3 million dollar watch, so I guess he does have a watch that makes a Patek a bit unimpressive
you sure it was a daytona lapis? i havent seen the show, so i dont know, but thsts a very rare and uncommon watch. White gold+blue dial daytona looks fairly similar from a distance so maybe thats what you saw?
I disagree on Gerri. The reason she wears an AP precious metal is because she is a woman fighting in a man's world. She needs to use all weapons to appear more powerful. Shiv doesn't have to prove anything. She can be feminine if she wants to; she can be anything if she wants to. And that's the point about all the Roys' watches. They are merely 'cufflinks' to complete the outfit.
Logan Roy wore an IWC in one episode but consistently wears a Jaeger LeCoultre. Best show on TV and awesome for watches. Bobby Axelrod on Billions is also great for watches and Ray Donovan wears some cool pieces on that show.
@@walkerb1734 Agreed! Flew under the radar but it was mentioned in Season 4 episode 3 I believe that Logan leaves a watch for his grandson, which was sneaky cool.
The article I read from Boss hunting said Billions used alot of fake watches on the show but on Ray Donovan were actually Liev Schreiber's personal watches. The Seamaster he wore on the show was actually on his wrist in a few film's
I think you guys missed a point, The Roy family are new money. They are new to the lifestyle, this is why we see them thinking money is everything and acting as if they are more important than say the helpers around the house and such. This is drastically contrasted in the Pierce dinner where we see what actual wealth and old money looks like. Where they treat helpers like family and have so much money that non of them work but instead do literally whatever they want, which by how they were raised is to study and learn and not just party and splurge. This to say the if the PP was given to a Pierce they would have been thankful for the thought and not so much the item instead of having the need and insecurity to undermine others
Perhaps the best episode of your channel that I’ve caught so far. Fascinating to consider what the watches convey at different points of character development. 👏🏼 Well done
This might be the rare video that could get people who don't give a shit about watches (but care about Succession) to actually spend 30 min on a watch video.
"The Datejust is a great watch. People like to forget that." This is SO TRUE. I only bought my Datejust after owning many other watches, mostly much more expensive. It's a great watch. I get it now.
I haven’t watched the show so I’m not sure if the context fits. But, in Asian culture it is very bad to gift a watch particularly to an older person. Watches symbolize the passing of time and in a way symbolize death. It can be interpreted as waiting for a person to pass. In Chinese specifically the word for “clock”, not “watch” specifically, also sounds a lot like a word associated with death. Even though I haven’t seen the show. Another parallel that I love about the watch symbolism, is that at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what watch the character wears, the time passes equally for all of them. It’s just a facade covering up the vulnerability and mortality of all of every character. They can spend as much money as they want on watches, but no matter how much money they have, they still cannot buy more time.
Brilliant. In the U.S., many years ago, it was customary for a man to spend fifty years with one company. The traditional company retirement gift was a gold watch. When I retired, I decided to give myself that gold watch: a Cartier Tank Francaise.
That's weird, I'm also Chinese and I know for marriage it can be customary for parents to gift nice watches to the bride and groom. Longines was a popular choice a few decades ago but if you're better off you'd probably gift Rolex or something. I also just gifted my mom a Cartier and she didn't say anything about that 😅
In Mandarin “gifting a clock” and “making funeral arrangements” sound exactly the same. But it only applies to clocks, not to watches. And no one actually gifts clocks unless deliberately meant as an insult or a joke.
Awesome video ! Well done. Succession has turned into my new and favorite show of all times. The writing was so beautiful and in-depth not many shows can compare to the quality of succession. I myself was trying to figure out each and every watch each character would wear during the show.. all very interesting you did a wonderful job on this episode. 👍
Theo & Harris Drinking Game: "Its a phenomenal watch!" (Drink) "Just phenomenal! " (Drink) "Really, really phenomenal!" (Drink)......... ER Doctor: "Im calling it. Time of death?...halfway through the video."
I always thought the Tom thing was more simple, he had the Cartier in earlier seasons because he was less senior/rich, he gets the AP to go with his greater status
I think Greg receiving a gift he had to pay for is the same reason why Logan didn’t except the watch from Tom. That lesson happened to Logan. Greg is becoming Logan and Tom is becoming Jerry. I agree that theses watches have life lessons.
You indulged in your analysis fantasies a bit, but surely there was some sentiment of what your saying behind the watch choices. We were all spotting them through the series too so that’s cool
Where has this show been all my life!! I'm so behind, but I'm streaming it now it looks awesome & great to see different watches on each character. Great analysis T&H, great upload. Keep 'em coming..
I don't know if you've noticed it, but even in the promo photo for season four Logan is fiddling with his wristwatch, which is further underlining the importance of this piece of jewellery in the series ;) I've really enjoyed the entire video you guys have made, but there's one gripe I have with it, meaning: you could've provided better shots of some of the watches as it's difficult to identify them by names only, and especially when they're foreign and pronounced differently to their original versions.
Had CC's enabled from a previous video and discovered Christian always starts with "What's up watch fam?" - I previously thought he said "What's up watch fan?" Always seemed a bit on the nose 😅
The Murdoch family is certainly more interesting than Succession and when Rupert shuffles off, it will be stranger than fiction. Wonder what they wear is watches?
Great hat Christian, I wear the same one with my club logo (members only crest, when you know you know) worn around the world. I don’t wear a show watch. Just a watch. Excellent episode.
Did anyone notice that Greg appeared to have switched up his Rolex Sub for something different in episode 9? I couldn't quite identify the watch, but it appeared to be rose gold? Did he maybe 'upgrade' to an AP ROO?
I keep telling everyone about watches on Succession - finally someone made a video that I really wanted. Can you do one for succession and also if you can peaky blinders
I see Roman wearing the blue Datejust doing press, so I suppose he either just kept the watch he got, or it was his before he got the role and just chose it for his character. I always thought the Datejust wasn't "enough" for his character's wealth.
Hey guys, I really enjoy the show! Can you guys do an episode why you don't like Patek Phillipe, specifically discussing quality concerns and lack of innovation ? Thank you!
The reason why KENDALL doesn't care about Naomi's watch is that at that moment he is paranoidly invested in finding what his kids got him and I think btw RAVA lied abt; there was no gift from kids, Kendall doesn't really give a shit abt anyones gift at the moment cause what his kids got him was the most valuable thing for him . If there is one thing other than the CEO gig Kendall really cares abt is his kids. and ROMAN doesn't care abt watches cause some people don't care abt watches regardless of money and also he doesn't get off on normal stuff
Idk if I agree with the characterization of Gerri. She seems like a beaten down old woman who has dedicated her life to the company but is overlooked, but has this kind of motherly presence even when using Roman’s proclivities to make her feel alive and wanted.
This episode was when i found about Patek Philippe, and a little latter i start to research about watches and brands history. Love this show btw, i'm in love with Tom Wambsgans Royal Oak.
Buying the mansion for $53 million to this level of wealth isn't a buy but a transfer of assets from cash to real estate. Shiv wears her Cartier, not so much as it's a watch, it's because it's Cartier as in fashion.. She is very conscious on what she wears. Cartier is one of the few brands that can pull it off. Most of the rest I more or less agree with most. Except I still think Jerri wearing that Royal Oak as a woman, is far more brutalist than Tom. Logan as far as watches doesn't care, he's older it's a tool. SImilar to Gates and Jobs. The son's Roman and Kendall do to their generation are more in tune with what to wear and when. As you said, they're toys. Only real push was the RM by Kendall. VC and JLC are just fashion, looks good when I have to be suited up. I'm glad it's ending, last season don't have to donate decades of my life to this show, which I liked. We did talk about this abit on Tim Writes stream.
Isn't Cartier credited with 'inventing/releasing' the first dedicated WRISTwatch? I think this buys them more respect than other jewelers like Jacob & Co. or like Hermes or something?
One little titbit on this - Logan leaves Colin (his security guy) a Rolex Daytona Lapis in his unsigned will in S4E1 - it's not mentioned, but fans found it by zooming in on the note that's shown on screen. A $3M watch? Well, I never.
And probably this is the reason why Roman wanted a blue dial watch (Mark 20) in the final season!
you sure it was a daytona lapis? i havent seen the show, so i dont know, but thsts a very rare and uncommon watch. White gold+blue dial daytona looks fairly similar from a distance so maybe thats what you saw?
@@sylviabennett7787 it's written on the note, and go see the show. Plus it's Logan Roy
Succession has one of the strongest watch games of any recent show and I’d been waiting for someone to make this episode. Great work guys!
Except her dads favourite and Ceo of Waystar
Logan Roy wore an IWC in one episode but consistently wears a Jaeger LeCoultre. Best show on TV and awesome for watches. Bobby Axelrod on Billions is also great for watches and Ray Donovan wears some cool pieces on that show.
What model JLC?
I think JLC is the perfect choice!
@@walkerb1734 Agreed! Flew under the radar but it was mentioned in Season 4 episode 3 I believe that Logan leaves a watch for his grandson, which was sneaky cool.
@@brownmcpherson5724 A Rendez-Vous. He's also been seen in a Brequet Classique and possibly a Hermes.

The pierces don’t treat their workers like family.
Makes me appreciate the costume designer on this show so much!

Agreed, but an oyster and smooth bezel isn’t the best version
“A brutalist watch.” The watch as architecture. I like the concept.
You nailed the Datejust, two billionaires I know both wear 36mm Datejusts
I think it’s fascinating that Roman wears 36mm on both watches. The IWC is the baby pilot and not the Mark 18 or XX.
You guys did a fantastic job in your analysis of Succession watches, and the personalties behind each.
I haven’t watched the show so I’m not sure if the context fits. But, in Asian culture it is very bad to gift a watch particularly to an older person. The reason budget problems never come up for characters in Succession is because the message is money is only real for poor people

Great chat on the show Succession. It’s definitely interesting to see how certain people navigate life. They don’t waste time.
I always thought the Tom thing was more simple, he had the Cartier in earlier seasons because he was less senior/rich, he gets the AP to go with his greater status
When I first saw Logan‘s watch in season 1 I thought Breguet (marine, classique..?)
Outstanding episode, HUGE Succession fan and loved your insight!
Rom is getting more powerful in the latest episodes and started wearing RM
Next up we need to discuss Christian's L.L.Bean collection.
Nah it's Eddy Bauer
"I have a watch" also implies that despite his wealth, watches are just functional for Logan Roy. If he has one already, why would he need another?
Have you noticed Kieran wears the same watch on Hot Ones, I think the DJ is just his watch, or maybe he just got to keep it after the show.
I think Greg receiving a gift he had to pay for is the same reason why Logan didn’t except the watch from Tom. That lesson happened to Logan. Greg is becoming Logan and Tom is becoming Jerry. I agree that theses watches have life lessons.
The Hodinkee piece on Succession watches is a great companion to this video and a must-read for anyone interested in Succession.

I’m amazed by your analysis of Succession. Hands down
Two favorite shows... Succession and T&H ❤
You indulged in your analysis fantasies a bit, but surely there was some sentiment of what your saying behind the watch choices. We were all spotting them through the series too so that’s cool
I'm not really much of a watch guy, but as a Succession fan, this has been a fascinating bit of analysis/symbolism.
Where has this show been all my life!! I'm so behind, but I'm streaming it now it looks awesome & great to see different watches on each character. Great analysis T&H, great upload. Keep 'em coming..
Keith Richards wears a Panthere, and wears it real well.
Brilliant brilliant episode! And proof none understands watches from a technical and cultural perspective better than T&H!
Cousin Gre was wearing a Vacheron Constantin 5500 Chronograph with a "panda" dial in the last season. Awesome watch!
Bodyguard/Driver Colin was willed a Rolex Daytona Lapis from Logan.
This!! He had a lapis in the vault that he willed to his bodyguard. Pretty cool.
I don't know if you've noticed it, but even in the promo photo for season four Logan is fiddling with his wristwatch, which is further underlining the importance of this piece of jewellery in the series ;)

The Murdoch family is certainly more interesting than Succession and when Rupert shuffles off, it will be stranger than fiction. Wonder what they wear is watches?
I thought I saw Connor wearing a Hublot. Makes sense for this character. Kind of a joke.
Very interesting break down. Well done gentlemen.
Greg upgrades to a Pepsi in season 4
@Theo and Harris -- the RM is a 67-01 platinum that is relatively new, but definitely not unique!
Just starting watching the show, on season 1, will be back to watch this when I catch up, brb.
Great hat Christian, I wear the same one with my club logo (members only crest, when you know you know) worn around the world. I don’t wear a show watch. Just a watch. Excellent episode.

Great episode! Do white lotus next!
That was the coolest intro ever made
I like how you interpret the Royal Oaks, I've noticed a trend with older guys buying these 😂
Logan’s watch is a JLC Rendezvous Classique
Watching this makes me FEEL like I’m on coke
You couldn't have designed a show better to product place high-end horology 😂
Ohh not the usual intro music "tiw tiw titiw tiw tiw tiw tiw"

What kind of watch would you choose for Matsson?
Tom went from Panerai to Santos than Santos tt and then AP
A interesting and welcome reason to talk about Rolex and Cartier AGAIN. 😉
my usual reminder not to use masterworks
That was awesome!
Any thoughts on Matsson wearing a JLC Polaris in season 3 (the lakeside scenes in Italy)?
Lol at Roman being the humble one. Do these guys watch Succession?

you should do an update when the series end!! The election episode was crazy

Set designers don't choose the watches. That would be costume designer.
Great video!
BOAR ON THE FLOOR!!
Does logan says that ? "I have watch" when Tom gifts him ?? I don't think so. He awkwardly accepts it and gives to that kid.
