Snap-on dual 80 ratcheting wrenches and an alternative: Proto.

  • I’ll show you my solution to Snap-on’s limited size options.
I chose to go with Proto but lots of companies carry ratcheting wrenches: Cornwell, Matco, MAC, Tekton, Gearwrench, and more. I do suspect most are made in the same 2-3 factories in Taiwan.
I cover the snap-on dual 80 wrenches as well as the Proto ASD 12-point ratcheting wrenches.

Those Proto ratchets are Taiwan made. American made ratchets are labeled with an A at the end instead of a T (Taiwan). The Taiwanese made Protos are still pricey reflecting their high quality .

I had that identical set of snap-ons, and yes they sure do gouge up the nuts and bolts lol, actually traded the set back in for the blue points. Set goes down to 5/16", and are beautiful.

I buy my Proto's from Grainger and love them. Here's what they have listed on the Spline Box vs the 12pt Box: These spline ratcheting combination wrenches have an open end and a spline box end that can be used on 4-pt., 6-pt., 12-pt., or spline fasteners, and it can apply more torque than a 12-pt. design without stripping the fastener head.

The Snap-on Flank drive plus design was specifially engineered for the US navy after they asked Snap-on to solve their problem with rusted fasteners, as a suspension mechanic from NYC these were the only solution besides the last resort using an air hammer, they shine most on tie rod jamb nuts when doing wheel alignments in harsh climates, just to add the only flare nut wrenches that work in harsh conditions are the tried and true Snap-ons, I've ruined nuts and broke wrenches using other brands so yes there is a difference between Snap-on and the rest

Have you measured the Snap-On 19mm? how long is it. I am on the fence between the Snap-on and the Hazet. I believe the Hazet is a 72 tooth gear so the Snap on should be smoother. The Hazet is more of a rectangular grip area vs the oval of the snap on so I believe would be more comfortable. The Hazet 19mm is around 10 1/2" total length but I haven't been able to find the length on the Snap-On for comparison. Also the Hazet is not a full polished grip, it is a Satin finish but to be honest I prefer the satin finish myself on wrenches over the fully polished.
I own just the one Proto ratcheting US made reversible wrench in 9/16 that I use on the job all day and I have to admit it is a fantastic wrench but it is a spline drive.
So far about the best I have been able to find is:
Snap-On=10 piece set 10mm-19mm $450 US, fairly easy to warranty
Hazet=12 piece set 8mm-19mm $215 US, not sure how easy/hard to warranty
Proto=14 piece set 6mm-19mm $360 US, fairly easy to warrant
With all that said I can buy individual Snap-On and Proto wrenches if something where to happen to one of them where I cannot find the Hazets individually. There is a lot of things to consider when buying tools.

Considering the fact that you are happy with the Proto, I'd get that set and save the $. I would not get Hazet as my main set in the US.

Oh amdnyhe Carlyle 6 point reversible ratcheting wrench and other wrenches are flipping amazing!!! If snap on is to expensive for someone the Carlyle is nipping at their nuts with that ratchet, especially with their flank drive. Doesn't tear up the socket head like the milwauke e or Carlyle non ratcheting.

I've been using gear wrench reversible ratchet wrenches for 9 years in a diesel shop and never had a problem. I only use them when I need them though, also snap on dealers will warranty gear wrench. (Ratchet wrenches only) I've double wrenched them before too. I will say that the chrome may not last as long as some more expensive wrenches. Not 100% sure on that though.

@@leea.3772 yea, its all about how you use it right? I probably have cranked them a bit more than what a tool that price is rated for...either way they are easier to find, buy and replace than any tool truck. Honestly I love Carlyle Napa hand tools, at least they say Taiwan on the back.

Matco makes a set of gear wrenches that don't flop around. Although having the ability for 0 offset is it plus. Those are fixed offset. If I was only going to purchase one set it would be Flex heads. those are luxury for technicians. I did just buy them. It's like a drug 50 bucks a week

i know this video is old but i honestly find snapon's ratcheting wrenches a let down due to the simple fact that they dont have the swivel end option like you get from blue point (i know same brand, but bluepoint is a 1 year warranty only) .. if snapon came out with that set and just slapped the snapon logo and warranty on it, i can guarantee they wouldnt be able to make enough to keep up with the demand. the blue point ratcheting flex head wrenches are by FAR the best set of wrenches i have ever owned.
