  • Remember our old favorite little guys? Things like the Kahr P380 & PM9, the Ruger LCP 380, and Diamondback DB9. These, along with other single stacks, are often called useless dinosaurs now that more and more of the little wonder nines are coming out holding 10 plus rounds in a size that formerly only could hold hold about 6 rounds. So we wondered, could we even find a use for the old style single stackers?

A lot was presented here but the biggest takeaway: Your most powerful gun doesn't do you any good if it's sitting in your safe.

My Diamondback DB9 is a GREAT gun, i carry it 24/7 as my primary ALL YEAR. It comes with a flush magazine bottom for free, and as such will DISAPPEAR in my palm. It's only barely 16 oz. FULLY LOADED, and as such rides effortlessly in my light shorts pocket while walking on the beach. SAME
The South Is shorts-and-T-shirt usually, and this 9 hides perfectly without issue. it eats ALL ammo more robustly than my other 9mm, including a dozen brands, grains, cases, jacket types, and +P. It's actually very accurate at the range, and really not overly snappy for its size with its low bore axis. Maybe not for beginners, but this is my final choice for EDC.

I've had a Kahr PM9 for over twenty years and it's been bullet proof. Also a P9 for several years and it's been a fine pistol as well. For a deep concealment pistol i.e. lightweight, reliable, accurate and a svelte footprint; the PM9 is hard to beat. The extra 4-6 rounds with a Hell cat or P365 just add weight and bulk for me. Furthermore, the Kahr P series pistols have a very low bore axis and a 1911 degree grip, that's very comfortable for my small to medium size hands. The felt recoil is very manageable. However, the Kahr P380 I had was a real let down. It simply was not reliable with various ammo! An experienced range master told me he's seen very few Kahr 380's that didn't have malfunction issues! Ended up with a S&W 340 PD as a pocket/ back up gun.
    Good video. Thanks for sharing

These obsolescent carry guns offer two major advantages in a market with guns selling like hotcakes: low price and availability. In a time where many people are jobless but at now worried about their safety, these guns look very appealing.

I think you nailed it with "can carry" I have a great many carry guns including a Ruger LCPII 380 and a Sig P365. I thought that buying the P365 would eliminate the LCPII but I was wrong. There are times when the P365 is just too heavy for what I'm wearing.
Now I'm looking at the Diamondback DB9 (Gen 4) and I'm thinking that may be the gun I would most often carry, I need to buy one of those. I had a Khar PM 40 (very close in size to the Diamondback DB9) which was great size but again fairly heavy for some carry situations.
I also have a couple of Baby Browning 25 acp pistols that while very tiny are not the easiest guns to draw and fire. They take a lot of practice to become proficient with. When you put one of these Browning's up against the LCPII its like comparing the P365 to a Glock 19. Truly tiny but far less power, harder to draw and harder to hit with.

Yep! Definitely still relevant. As a new person to conceal carry having these 2 exact subsets of pistol to start out with I find the micro 380 ends up leaving the house more often than the 9mm..

I’ve been carrying concealed for more than 50 years, and it mystifies me that most reviewers ignore or skirt over the one stat that has always affected me the most-width. During my Philadelphia PD days, I could carry a 1911 concealed more comfortably than a snub nose 38. The 45 was flatter against my body. This was especially relevant when riding a motorcycle off duty. A 1911 at the kidney was no trouble. You at least paid some attention to that. However, I would have liked to see you compare the width of the LCP against all the others. I believe width to be the LCP's unsung advantage.

For me it’s all about the weight, comfort and concealability. I’m less concerned about capacity. That’s why I often carry either a Ruger LCP II or a Kahr CM 9 especially when I’m staying at home or not going very far away. When I was younger I carried a Walther P 99. Now that I’m retired I only carry the Walther if I’m going into downtown New Orleans and I want more capacity. As always another great video. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. My carry goes from as large as a G29 10mm down to a G42 .380 so I agree that comfort and being able to actually carry in every situation is the big determiner.

The PM9 wasn't the original. The Kahr MK9 all stainless is the "original micro 9mm" and came out in 1995. Everything to come after it is inspired and a copy of it.

My p9-2 is one of the most accurate and comfortable handguns I've ever fired. Zero malfunctions, but like yours it's a premium series gun from Kahr.
Most people bought the cw series kahrs which were budget versions and those have less lifespan engineered into them so a lot of people don't think much of kahr hand guns.

I love my Kahr PM9. I can easily pocket carry it and it’s a 9mm, which I prefer over .380. Just carry a second magazine and work on tactical reloads and 10+ round capacity isn’t an issue.

Exactly right. I sold my Kahr CM9 which was my deep hideout gun after I bought the 365. Now the deep hideout role is the 365s. The Shield Plus and 365XL are replacing the G26 and G19s that were previously primary. The beat goes on.

  • @PPISAFETY

My favorite small single stacks are the original Shield, the Glock 42, and a rather unusual Kahr that was only made for 2 years called a P9 Covert. My Covert features the top half of a standard P9, and the bottom half of a PM9. So you can run it as a PM9 with a half inch more barrel, or you can use the extended magazine and run it as a P9 7+1 gun. I'm in south Florida where cargo shorts are very common attire, so the Covert works great in a pocket holster. As a pocket gun, I like the Glock 42 even better, while on the belt I like the Shield a bit better. I think the G42 is a highly underrated gun, probably because consumers thought they were going to get a 9mm single stack from Glock but got a .380 initially. Even though today seen as large for a .380, the G42 is really easy to shoot well, even on an off day.
I looked at the P365 and the Shield Plus, and then looked at how much time and money I had invested in intense practice and testing, not to mention holsters and multiple spare magazines for the guns I already owned, and determined that for me, it just wasn't worth doing all that again just to get 3 or 4 extra rounds worth of in-gun capacity. There is nothing wrong with higher capacity, and that was a concern for me when I was working as a police officer, but now that I am an old retired guy who minds his own business, I think I'll be fine with what I already own.

My DB9 has changed my entire CC philosophy. I Love the gun because I no longer need a holster. It literally fits in any pocket without showing at all. Even my lightweight NIKE baseball shorts which are as thin as it gets. If I even think trouble is close I can simply put my hand in my pocket and put my hand firmly on the grip of my DB9 and nobody is the wiser. I don't care how fast a draw you have you won't beat me if you have to reach for yours & I have mine in my hand already. I can draw & be up & on target in ( 1.1 ) Seconds.

None of the so-called microcompact 9 Lugers are microcompacts; they are all subcompacts. A microcompact is a true pocketable pistol with a bulk volume (B ≈ L×W×H÷2) of no more than 10 in^3. Subcompacts have bulk in the range of 10 to 20 in^3. The only double stack microcompact I know of is the Ruger LCP MAX, which carries 10+1 rounds of .380 Auto.
When deep concealment is called for, you propably need a true, microcompact, pocket pistol, and 10+1 rounds beats 6+1 rounds every time.
