If it’s beyond you, you’ve clearly never had a job or done activities that require adequate hydration. Go ahead and drink only when you’re thirsty when you’re unloading trailers of 30lb boxes for hours at a time in triple digit heat. Dr Berg could have mentioned this obvious fact but instead wants to generalize. Every person I’ve known who’s gotten a heat injury was because of dehydration that could’ve been prevented by drinking water when they weren’t thirsty. How bout that.
@@jacksonrelaxin3425 Ok well if you're working out, then obviously you're gonna drink more water cause you're thirsty. I usually drink far more water, say, after a run then on a hot day than I typically do
@@henryjiao3860 you’re supposed to drink electrolytes after you work out and during if you need it. Water is to be drank 5-6 hours before you do it at least because that’s how it gets processed in your body. The amount of water depends on the amount of food, amount of exercise and other factors. The more food, exercise, activity, the more water you’ll need. Your body lets you know when you need it.
That is false. Our body needs water. If you drink more water then you will pee. It helps clean your internal intestine, it.helps removing your toxins in your body, Like most of men problem is Prostate cancer, when you drink lots of water you will pee every minute and that helps cleaning and avoiding prostate cancer.

I grew up in Russia and never ever in my life I went outside with a bottle of water. If I’m thirsty I would just buy something to drink or wait until I get home. People can survive and function without drinking water for hours.
I remember during basic training, my drill sergeant would always yell “drink water!” But there was one basic training site were a female soldier died from drinking too much water. The military had to do a study to find out the “right” amount of water to drink; the “right” amount of water was never figured out.
When I was at Parris Island, I was the recruit tasked with keeping track of how many canteens of water we drank each day. On some days, the count was close to 30 canteens. Simple math...32 oz X 30 = 960 oz of water per day. That is 7.5 gallons of water. We were told it was to prevent heat exhaustion / heat stroke and there is some truth to that. We did sweat a lot but not nearly enough to warrant drinking 7.5 gallons of water each day.
As.a veteran we must ask.why.the.drill Sargent was hollering " drink more water" and " beat the heat"!!!..It was because we where doing hours of strenuous activity in the heat and other crazy conditions. I myself passed out trying to drink more Gatorade instead of just water.. Use common sense people. MOST OF US...TBH NEED MORE WATER..AND LESS SOFT DRINKS ETC.
He’s not saying only drink 2-3 cups of water a day. He’s saying only drink if you’re thirsty. If you’re thirsty enough for 8 cups of water then drink 8 cups. What he was trying to explain was that you don’t want to drink too much water and flush the electrolytes and sodium from your body. He was not saying don’t drink water. Also keep in mind there is water in all the healthy food he recommends. You’re getting water in your vegetables and fruit too.
I agree with you. But, excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes. So, I think ( not pretending to be a doctor here), if you are always thirsty, it could be a sign of a problem.
One thing that he did not say is that he gets his fluid intake other ways then just drinking H2O. If you are eating lots of fruit and drinking other types of fluids you will not need to drink an additional 100 oz of bottled or tap. On the other hand if you are eating lots of processed foods and drinking tea and coffee (both diuretics) and or exercise in a hot zone you may need to add more water to your intake. Anyone who works outside or lives in a desert knows to hydrate. Come on people, think. If you sweat, your hydrated, if your are thirsty, drink.
I was only drinking water when I felt thirsty and eat when hungry. Due to diet,my liver and kidney got swollen. Simply by drinking more water my kidneys gets better. Different things work for different people I guess.
Yes I agree, each people is unique. I guess people should try and then should decide by themselves, what is right way. For me I can stay without drinking water a day, without feeling thirsty. But that makes my pee very yellow and also I have inflammation after peeing.
My daughter recently was dealing with dry skin, on her face. I told her to drink more water and she started drinking like 5 cups of water a day, going up from 2-3 cups day, and her face literally started to look rehydrated and she didn't have any more dry skin... So, water did help in this instance. I'm sure drinking more water is a good thing but you probably should drink water that has added electrolytes.
I’ve Always struggled drinking water throughout the day I can go hours without it . people are always telling me that I have to drink more water and I just couldn’t do it. Thanks Dr Berg! I dont feel bad about it anymore!
No, he's saying that drinking the excess amounts of water that's been conventional wisdom for a long time is incorrect as it's unnecessary and can be toxic to health. He's not saying you don't need to drink water. Whenever you feel even a bit thirsty, you need to drink water. Your body needs water. Just not an excess of it to the point that you're drinking frequently just to drink. Also, your activity levels indicate the amount of water you need to consume. Highly active people need to consume more water because of the greater energy they expel, and they also need to drink more electrolytes.
Thank God for this video! I can’t drink that much water either I drink when I’m thirsty and that’s it. And also if you consume collagen (not all collagen is the same) that has five types in it your skin is gonna look awesome and you don’t need to apply lotion all the time it’ll be less frequent and you’ll see a big difference in your skin and nails and hair and everything. Because your body is made up of mostly collagen. I highly recommend collagen from Biotrust. Great company! Customer for life!

Drink according to activity... Eat according to activity... Breathe according to activity... Everything is based upon how you are using your body at the time that your using it. If you work a desk job... drink, eat lite, and breath according to your activity. If you are a construction worker do the same thing. People too often think that everything is a blanket way of doing things for everybody's life... it is all according to your activity, BUT EVERYBODY NEEDS to be active, drink water and eat nutritionally for their health and well being - because they ARE a human being and your body needs certain things to function properly. Your awareness of what your body needs according to what you are choosing to have your body do is key... that's the only difference between each of us... it is how we have chosen to use our body compared to someone else. Much like a new car for everyone in 3 months time they will all need different repairs and maintenance... and... according to how it was used. Genetics loads the gun, but activity pulls the trigger on the quality of your life.
@@sylviac.6778 I think their point is it depends on how you are using the car. If you are not doing a lot of driving and a lot of activity withing those 3 months you may need less maintenance then a car that is being used as a car pool and does drag races on the weekends. Both cars are being used for 3 months. One needs more work than the other because of the way it was being used.

The amount of water or fluid we need depends on our electrolyte levels as Dr Berg says. My doctor just told us the keto diet caused her to lose a lot of weight and since no one told her about drinking enough water, her kidneys were badly damaged. My husband went on the keto diet 5 years ago, and didn't drink enough water and started urinating blood so he lost one of his kidneys. I went on the keto diet ten years ago and wasn't told to up my water intake because the kidneys can't take all that protein, so I endured a kidney infection that lasted six months. So, please tell everyone to up their water intake, please.
Too many people consume way too much protein. Keto is not about massive amounts of protein to be eaten whenever. It's a balance of clean, healthy protein, low glycemic vegies, and occasional low glycemuc fruit. You can't eat two pounds of bacon, ground beef, eggs, cheese, nuts, chicken a day, which is techically keto, and think you're doing ok. Sure, you'll loose weight, but your kidneys can't handle that even with more water. Balance is the key.

I think that it’s important to know what “more water means.” A person who drinks no water may need to drink “more,” and a person who drinks some water every day may not need to drink “more.” When I drink next to no water, I pee infrequently and the pee is dark yellow, my mucus secretions dry up (crumbly earwax and dry boogers that hurt), I become constipated, and I develop muscle knots. When I drink about two to three water bottles a day, my pee is more copious and yellow in color, I can easily discharge mucus, my bowels are regular and easily moved, and the muscle knots loosen up. "They" didn't even said it. The problem is that people need 'water' (actually fluids) in that amount, but it had been said to take it out from beverages and food. Somehow it evolved that regular people spread the word you got to drink 2 to 3 liter a day. That's not true. You need 2 to 3 Liter of fluids, that can come from all sources, such as water and tea or foods like Pasta which when it gets boiled the noodle double their volume and contain a lot of water. Therefore you don't need to drink 2 Liter, if you already had one liter out of food. The problem is that some people don't eat or drink and that's how they collapse then, because the system needs some energy and fluids to keep working. When you go to Government websites or those of the military even or read the science research and so on it clearly says that you need 2 to 3 Liter fluids for an average adult out of fluids like water, tea and others, as well out of food. Of cause some food contain only little water, while other burst of water such as cucumber or watermelon. Thank you Dr. Berg for this informative video. I personally could never achieve the 8 glass/day model prescribed by most “experts”. I have many relatives who lived into their 90’s and drank very little water. Growing up in the 1960’s and 70’s, bottled water didn’t even exist to my knowledge. We drank tap water and somehow survived. I pondered whether the bottled water industry had something to do with this push for drinking excessive amounts of water. Thanks again for being the voice of reason.
You’re drinking more because the bottled water doesn’t hydrate you enough as tapwater does because they remove every mineral in the water which is necessary.
Yeah, it would be incredible difficult for me to drink 8 glasses of water a day. I don't know if I can force myself. I seem to naturally not require too much water
❤️ fact. My grandmother, my father's mother, lived for about 110 years, and she only went to a doctor once. I took her to a human doctor to have her tooth extracted only.
@Nicky Bobby well I’m 51 and I’m an Electrician in a steel plant here in the UK and probably walk around 10,000 to 16,000 steps a day and also trained in my gym (before lockdown) 6 evenings a week and the most I would drink in the whole day is around 3 litres over the full day and it’s been great for me. Your pee should not be dark or crystal clear. To much water is unhealthy
@Nicky Bobby I have two 1.5 litre flasks I also fill up from my home tap..... About 5ish years ago I did do more but I felt worse for it, just forcing it down through the day. I suppose the body tells us when it wants something. 👍🏼
A 4min video and I have learned so much than reading countless of health articles in google. I too am guilty of teaching the same stuff to my daughter! I think educators must learn from this channel too. A lot of the videos here are very helpful and explained in simplest manner. Thanks a lot!
@@Jay-yy7uk Wrong, he said in the end of video "make sure you only drink when you're thirsty". Some people don't feel thirsty and have many problems for not drinking enough water. My girlfriend is one of these people, she got quite sick because of that (kidney infection and crystals in the urine). If you watch the color and smell of your urine, you can also tell if you need more water or not. I can't agree with drinking just when you feel thirsty... It might work for some people, not everybody.

Exactly, if u are thirsty u drink and if u are hungry u eat. Why the hell would someone be thirsty and think they are hungry? Doesn't make sense to me.
Life Logic I think water and food intake depends on activity. If you do nothing in a day, there is no point in consuming large amount. What you refer to has to do with your activity associated with traveling. It appeared that you would have visited different places which involve some walking, some sightseeing, etc. Now, if you are just resting or do nothing - your body would have different reactions.
Good Lord, this makes total sense to me. I've fallen into the "drinking 8 glasses of H2O" trap, and I'm up all night using the bathroom. This info is going to help me get much more quality sleep. Thanks, Doc!
Just drink most of it from middle of the day to late afternoon and you will be fine. Don't ever drink it after waking up or before bed unless you are really dehydrated.
It was interesting video and something new for me. I get headaches and feel dizzy if I didn’t drink enough water, which is probably around 8 glasses of water, but more if I sweat a lot. Just as many others are commented or agree, It’s different for different people. We just have to make sure we don’t get dehydrated. I would like to see the study or research on all the things that were mentioned since they weren’t presented.
There has never been any evidence that drinking more water helps significantly with kidney stones nor that you need to drink when you’re not thirsty. P.s. Kidney stones are primarily caused by eating too much oxalate from things like spinach.
I hope he will clarify a bit before he discourages us from drinking water. I’ve been begging my 78 year old mama to drink more water & now she drinks 3 to 4 glasses a day. If she hears this, she’ll flip & regress back to her old ways.
Wow. I've been struggling for the past 12 years to drink half my weight in water and I have had serious water retention issues. I'm on keto now (for 3 years) and no longer fighting water retention (except when I slip during the holidays and have a bit more carbs than I should); but lately I have been having too much difficulty forcing myself to drink water. I don't agree. I was drinking water according to science all these years and what this doctor said in the video is 100% true. My viens were enlarged and I was dehydrated all the time. Ppl around me used to ask why I was dehydrated inspite of drinking more water. I realized something was not right, tried reducing water intake and everything in the body like everything, my low BP, vein issue is becoming normal day by day.
When you're thirsty you're likely dehydrated. Bad habit waiting until you are thirsty. Keep hydrated and your body will thank you. How much water do you need per day? Depends on your age, sex, weight, metabolism, environment, exercise, genetics, etc.
Thank you Dr. Berg. This myth of 8 glasses per day has always baffled me especially when it comes from "experts". I only drink water when I feel thirsty and I do great. Actually when I tried to follow the "experts" and pushed more water down my throat, I felt sick and bloated with absolutely zero benefits.

This is a real eye-opener because I always thought there's something wrong with me because I often don't feel thirsty. Unless I have done exercise or it's really hot, the water I consciously fetch is only like 2, 3 glasses at most. My urine would be pretty light colour. But I keep reading and hearing about how water is like the best thing you can consume. No many how hard I tried, I couldn't drink 8 glasses per day. Only managed it when I started intermittent fasting but deep down I had an odd feeling. Thank you for clearing it up!

"Drink when you are thirsty" every animal on Earth recognizes this. Why humans act against nature is beyond me. Thanks for the content Doc. I know this is an old video but so helpful.

We did sweat a lot but not nearly enough to warrant drinking 7.5 gallons of water each day.

the Sargent request was water, not "alcohol"
He’s not saying only drink 2-3 cups of water a day. He’s saying only drink if you’re thirsty. If you’re thirsty enough for 8 cups of water then drink 8 cups. What he was trying to explain was that you don’t want to drink too much water and flush the electrolytes and sodium from your body. He was not saying don’t drink water. Also keep in mind there is water in all the healthy food he recommends. You’re getting water in your vegetables and fruit too.
Finally someone actually understood the video. 👍

Well, I certainly don't want a NEW car that requires maintenance and repair in 3 months. Not a very good point there.

So the answer is KETO is actually bad for you especially for longer durations
Sorry for you, but seems the problem is with your protein intake not with water.
Or to decrease the protein i take:)
Keto is HIGH FAT diet not high protein. Up the leafy greens as their carbs don’t count according to dr berg.

Thank you Dr. Berg for clarifying the water myth. I have been saying for years that I didn't believe drinking that much water was helping me at all.
I think that I have discovered how much water helps my body to work smoothly and easily.

I hope he will clarify a bit before he discourages us from drinking water. I’ve been begging my 78 year old mama to drink more water & now she drinks 3 to 4 glasses a day. If she hears this, she’ll flip & regress back to her old ways.
Not just about this either lol
You've been lied to your whole life about everything, just observe and you will see
Daaamn same but all he said made perfect sense
When I don't drink the "recommended" daily allotment, I wake up feeling more refreshed, but puzzled by it. I'm not sure if you're right, but I'm going to relax on my rigid water drinking regimen without fear now and see where it takes me. Wow. Mind blown.
Salt and sugar attracts water. We need sufficient amount of sugar and salt for electrolytes. Balance is key.
How is it going now? And how long did it take to recover if at all ?
@@actionrick9345 I drink at least 2 quarts per day as compared to the 84 oz I used to drink, and I feel better and sleep thru the night. I'm also trying out sea salt and water; half tsp in a cup of filtered water 1st thing in the morning. I do it for the minerals. My body for some reason requires a lot of minerals. I feel great but bc of the salt I'm watching if my water needs change. And now, the swelling is not an issue at all these days when I exercise (aerobics, weights, stretching/yoga). The change for me was immediately noticeable...within a day or 2 I felt better.
Wow, to think we are born for this; the constant eating regiment. How privileged some human beings are!!
I've had dry skin all my life. I've drank so much water the last 20 years and still have dry skin. Working on bringing up my Vitamin A intake.
I have ichthyosis: when someone gives me their “expert opinion” that I should drink more water it's about all I can do not to break their nose! Seriously, like if ir was that easy I wouldn't have thought of that!
All that to say I can empathize. Good luck with your skin!
@@wilfdarr lol just why? 🤣
@@wilfdarr I also have ichtyosis and tried almost everything :( more water wasn’t a solution
@@biancastoinescu7463 I'm lucky. Mine goes away with a good tan (I don't know if it's the vitamins or if the unstable skin simply burns and peels off, but either way I only have it once the long sleeves come out. A couple more months and I'll be in the sun the first warm day and it'll be gone for another year!
How’s it going?
8 glasses of water works best for me, the day I don't I have a bad day. It's good to listen to your own body.
Hey there, but he's telling the same thing man!!!
Well, that contradicts everything I had been told for 40+ years. 🤔
get ready for more fats make you lose weight you should consume saturated fat red meat and avoid grains don't forget to eat enough salt
Robert Gross It sounds like you haven’t watched Dr Berg’s Keto diet videos. Y Ghatavi is accurately summarising the dietary advice espoused by Dr Berg in those videos. Eat more fats, restrict carbs and add some salt to balance your electrolytes. I’ve been following that advice for over a year now and I’ve never felt better.
@@nightrider_7318 me too, actually, I feel better on carnivore diet rather than keto carnivore is kind of keto though
ME TOO! Been beating myself up when I think I am not driking enough. Lol
@@Metarig I never had good feelings about keto anyway.
Alleluia! Somebody is finally saying this! All that happened when I was trying to drink 16 (crazy starvation diet) glasses a day was I had to pee worse than when I was pregnant. It was excruciating to have that much water sloshing around all the time and needing to go all the time.
This is the first I've heard one comment on not drinking water unnaturally. I'm glad you gave some excellent reasons and facts. Force feeding water always seemed weird to me. Thank you!
BTW, this doctor is right. When I was drinking a lot of water, I go to the bathroom a lot, yet I feel crappy.
If you feel crappy that's the wrong exit.
@@john091077 No Sh&t!
I was always bloated
@@dougfredricks2017 That's constipation.
Pppppppppppppppppppp
OMG, i've been misled all these years to drink more water. This is an eyeopener for me.
I KNEW IT!!!! 🤪
The power structure doesn’t want us healthy... I never listen to “them” I’ll listen to my body, thank you very much... great video
I spent one month drinking tons of water to see all the health benefits I would experience from the moment I wake up. It did nothing for me but make me pee more.
Helps u lose weight tho lol
That is false. Our body needs water. If you drink more water then you will pee. It helps clean your internal intestine, it.helps removing your toxins in your body, Like most of men problem is Prostate cancer, when you drink lots of water you will pee every minute and that helps cleaning and avoiding prostate cancer.
@@sealoftheliving4998 they thought you well in medical school.
Yeah, getting up twice a night to take a leak got real old, real fast.
Yes, 8 glasses is too much water. You need 7.8 glasses. -IGN
ValiantPixel people still play this game?
*****
ValiantPixel I think 6 1/2 would be better
+ValiantPixel legend
+Eric Berg i see you love playing the game too..lol
awesome video by the way
Bottom Line: Drink when you are thirsty. Dr. Berg is the best.
how about people that have kidney problem?
When you're thirsty you're likely dehydrated. Bad habit waiting until you are thirsty. Keep hydrated and your body will thank you.
How much water do you need per day? Depends on your age, sex, weight, metabolism, environment, exercise, genetics, etc.
@@James-il3tq i 100% agree with you , i almost never get thirsty and i exercise a lot ..
I have been a water junkie for years. But I have had severed leg cramps in the evening oftentimes having to go to bed early. Since I have decreased my water to a few bottles a day for the past 5 days, I have not experienced any leg pains. Thank you Dr for sharing this info which changed my life.
mrs robinson what’s your opinion on alkaline water ? spring water ? purified water ? is their a preference ? i myself love spring water .. it taste so clean , No salty , acidic taste at all
How long do you think it took to develop that ?
I love this man. It makes so much sense and it is something I had a feeling about intuitively.
Thanks some guy on you tube! I quit water and switched to beer, I feel great now!
+Jim Adams how's that going? i hear a case a day attracts beautiful women.
+Clancy Coburn Yup, at 2:am she's a 10, at 10:am she's a 2! ......Or so Willie says.

+Jim Adams Alcoholic
+Princessa Car Thanks Mom!
As a biologist I have to say that Dr. Berg speaks very good science..
Thank you for telling the truth, a lot of people have been lied to including myself. I am learning a lot from you. Thanks a million.
Just like how Dr Berg tricked you to think that he's a real medical doctor. lol
This vid omits the FIRST THING doctors would say - observe your pee and if it is too dark you need hydration.
exactly! it feels so weird to drink when you're not thirsty it makes me dizzy i swear the only exception is when its more than 95 degrees outside then i'm thirsty all the time
Dr. Berg is not even a real medical doctor. Just don't take him seriously.
@@kevintan5777 hmm so how do I find out if excessive water is good or bad?
@@kevintan5777 are you?
I was always worried about not drinking enough water, but now I know It’s a win win 😊 I only drink water when thirsty.
I have been on the drinking lots of water everyday bandwagon for years. The past month or so, I have noticed that if I don’t drink a liter of water in the morning and just go straight to the coffee, I have so much more energy every day. This has had me confused for weeks. Thanks for sharing.
