You know, Pink Floyd was widely embraced by hippies for how extraordinarily well their music pairs with tripping on magic mushrooms. I guess they were boosted into another musical dimension. I haven't listened to Floyd in many years, but listening to them in your videos makes me realize they have a lot more jazz influences than I realized before.
This track is a tribute to their former bandmate Syd Barrett who (I believe) had a psychotic breakdown

Richard Wright's keyboard playing on this entire album is masterful, you easily lose yourself in the journey this album takes you on, it's one of their best. It's layered and mixed beautifully. If you ever listen to their album Dark Side of the Moon, you have to listen to it in one hit, start to end as each songs flows into the next and it's truly an experience to be had for a new Pink Floyd fan, I envy anyone being able to do that for the first time.

Yes. Can't stress this point enough. Especially on first time hearing, if you have not heard anything from the album before. That's how they were meant to be listened to when they were first released on vinyl in the 1970's and 1980's. From side 1 track 1, to the faint ticking of the needle looping the hiss of the final groove of side 2, unless the turntable was automatic obviously ;-). Trying to piece together the story they're telling, constantly distracted by the music.

Hi Sevsimo, I am a 68yo lady from Sydney, I promptly subscribed to your channel at your first Pink Floyd reaction! I love seeing you sniffing your candle and yes, you're right, listening to PF is like taking a trip, I love your reactions discovering new music!
You must know that "Shine on you crazy diamond" is a tribute and remembrance piece to Pink Floyd founding member Syd Barrett. Earlier in this band's history, Barrett left the group (read - eased out of the band) because he had mental problems and drug addiction. He was extremely talented. The lyrics of Shine on... refer to him, to his inability to cope with the sudden fame, while his talent was the diamond of the group.
Another fact about PF is that they choose very carefully the lyrics. Specially for this, you might check out "Time" and "Us and them". And of course, you should finally "meet" the group and check out their super famous PULSE concert, you must watch the RESTORED AND RE-EDITED version, with pieces like SORROW (for this one you'll need 3 candles !!!) , CONFORTABLY NUMB etc. David Gilmour is the lead guitar & vocals and the older ones guys are the original members. Cheers till next time 🙂

What you have to remember is that this is coming up to 50 years old! Back then there were no computers to just click a button to add effects and be done with it like most music today. They had to record all the music onto tape and create effects practically

Yes. Tape based echo machines, tape strung across the room to get some of the long delays. The azimuth coordinator. A wah pedal, plugged in the wrong way round. Tape cuts and splices. Double tracking. Put on almost any other album of the time next to it and the difference in layers and details is immediately clear.

Just imagine if you will that this was the music of your teen years. How would all the music on the radio that followed compare? How would it effect your perception of all the music that followed? And your outlook on life? That is the conundrum that us old geezers find ourselves in. The mastery of harmonics, clear clean crisp playing of instruments, lyrics that say it all and nothing more or superfluous. The music industry is left wanting since. Alas for the lost pleasures of youth.

As many of us Classic-ers say often when viewing new generations react to Pink Floyd music, it is a joy to witness their exuberance.
We reacted the same way when we first plucked -- no ... placed carefully -- a new Pink Floyd album on our rather expensive turntable and layed down even more carefully the cartridge onto the black grooved disc and then experienced the wonder of Pink Floyd. We freaked out, man. Just as you have. And when I was able to afford a set of Bose headphones -- utopia, dude !! Musical heaven. Of course, there were tons of other great bands back in the 70's. And late 60's. But Pink Floyd is a genre all to themselves. And as another person commented here, some who hear of Pink Floyd now imagine their music to be all about psychedelia and weird sounds. Their early material definitely had stuff like that in it. Their "Echoes" album was essentially the first to begin taking on the sound that you hear on "Wish You Were Here." You are in for a roller-coaster of a ride with your dive into Pink Floyd. I look forward to riding along with you on this trip.

The entire piece is a tribute to their friend and original band member Syd Barrett. He developed schizophrenia and had to drop out (he is the crazy diamond). Hence the sad sound of the music. The entire piece is in a minor key to lend that dark tone. Except for the very last moments where it shifts major and brightens to a hopeful finish.

It's not just effects on Gilmour's guitar, he has a unique and special touch. He's different but equally expressive as Jeff Beck, who you may want to check out.

This is the more under appreciated Pink Floyd piece ever! It's my absolute favourite! Gilmour plays a lap steel guitar with a slide, that's how he gets that other worldly noise out of it.

Really enjoying your reactions! Team Choppy Drop approved - Pink Floyd feels like the Einstein of music, such a vibe. I think the Tool army comparisons are because both aren't afraid to break the rules and boundaries we expect of music as mere mortals. If ever the was a band that requires full album reactions it's Pink Floyd. *The Wick of the candle - Aloha

Ehi, do you want to hear something special from them? Search for Echoes Live in Gdansk (you'll find it under the name of David Gilmore, the singer and lead guitar of Pink Floyd, recorded professionally during the concert in the Gdansk Stocznia shipyard in Poland, on the Baltic Sea). It's an experience too few people know (as they mainly refer to the Pompei, Italy, session in the 70s). I promise you, you'll not regret :)
By the way, it was a keyboard. The saxophone is the one in the I-V part ;)

Good evening. Very recently found your reactions and I’m enjoying them immensely. I find your reactions fantastic and very honest. I’m so glad you found Floyd.
I’ve been listening since I was 15 or so and it is a real journey, but always an amazing one. As you’ve attested to, they have the habit of sucking you in on a certain path then without warning going off in another mind blowing direction. I still can’t get my head round their music genius.
I do feel that something must have been aligned for these men to come together purely by chance and produce music of such inordinate quality.
My friend, please check out more of Dark Side, Animals, The Wall, The Division Bell …………..🙏

I was 14 yo when this album was released. Back then, we could barely wait for the next Pink Floyd album (or Yes, Genesis, ELP...and many, many others). It was a musical adventure for all of us, an adventure like no other again. I'd love to relive that feeling of listening to this for the first time. But that's impossible, so the best next thing is to watch reaction videos like yours and enjoy the feeling by proxy. :) Thank you for that!

I think it's incredible if you've never heard any Pink Floyd songs prior to creating this channel, that amazes me. Mostly because their songs are played on the radio constantly where I live here in Norway, and growing up I couldn't avoid them (nor would I want to avoid them, absolutely love them). Mostly their most commercially successful songs on the radio, of course, but still. I'm glad you didn't, because it's so much fun watching you react to their music for the first time! More stankface, mate!

Don't tell me that you jumped Welcome to The Machine, Have a cigar and Wish you were here!!! You just must listen to these three in a row now, this will give you the full story. Actually it was discussed if this song SOYCD should stay in its full length on one side just like Ecohes but at end they decided to split the song into two and add the rest in between to complete the story..
Again, don't miss out to listen to Firth of Fifth with Genesis from 1973..... you will be surprised what music sounded then....and not sounding today.

As much as you get into the emotion of their songs, you should listen to *The Great Gig in the Sky*, one of the goat rock vocal performances, but, of course, not what you'd imagine.
Fyi, the song on the album just before that one is *Time*, possibly their most famous track.

Two things Pink Floyd is famous for. Getting unique sounds from their instruments and combining instruments to make unique combinations. Not sure what was being done to the guitar here but go back to parts I-V and listen to the guitar segment right before the vocals begin. It sounds like a sax playing along with Gilmour, note for note, except for a few very sex like sounds.

The saxamaphone ( as Homer calls it ) is actually Richard Wright on one of his keyboards, the fact that you don't know what is doing what is part of the brilliance of the band ,you don't know what, where, why or how they managed it, forgetting that the Floyd pioneered most of the sounds and they invented the concept of the light show back in the 60s, they were more famous for the lights than the music .
