Over the years I have heard this a 1000 times, never gets old. It gives me the chills and tears every time. The emotional impact is unexplainable......
I just posted a rambling comment, having not yet read anyone else’s comments, and I also said something about it never getting old even after a thousand listens. We both said it because it’s absolutely true.
That's exactly why Pink Floyd will always be musically relevant well into the future. When all of today's instantly forgettable drivel is just a footnote in history. Pink Floyd like Beethoven Mozart and Bach will always astounding music lovers
When the legendary Boston radio station 104.1FM WBCN (Boston Concert Network) went off the air in 2009, the last song ever played on the radio station was "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". If you grew up in the Boston area in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, WBCN played the soundtrack of your life. Tuning in for the last few hours felt like going to the wake of a life-long friend. Many of the DJ's reminisced about the great years. They played commercials promoting the station that we had all heard over the years. As the last song, "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was ending, it simply segued into the hiss you hear if your radio is tuned into a station that doesn't exist. I think it was the perfect song to play as we bid WBCN (The Rock of Boston) farewell.
What a fabulous way to go out. With that long slow fade and the sax becoming a distant shipsmoke on the horizon, and then the faint droning of the machine… and finally off-air static. They couldn’t have possibly made a better exit. Thanks for sharing.
This was a tribute to founder Syd Barrett who increasingly struggled with his mental health and finally left the band and became a recluse. During the recording of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, he visited Abbey Road Studios and he was so changed, the rest of the band didn't recognise him.
The Floyd are on a level that is virtually unachievable by any other band...hope you had a right proper buzz on 😁....enjoy your Floydian journey....and diggin the hair mate....peace
One of their best... A tribute to the band's founder Syd Barrett... This song always give me the chills...and I use it often for meditation and self reflection
As an older dudette, been listening and loving PF for 50+ years now, almost daily. If I'm having a rough time, headphones go on and so does PF. They ALWAYS take you on a journey and for me, pulls me out of a funk. Too many memories to list with this band but my children, grandchildren and even now great grandchildren are PF lovers! Will be played when the good Lord calls me home!
I have always thought it ironic that while I was growing up in Ohio, I had these two slightly older uncles who painted their room black and posted Pink Floyd posters all over their walls and ceiling and played, you guessed it, Pink Floyd nearly nonstop. I guess this would have been the "Dark Side of the Moon" era. But I don't remember one song from back then. Nothing. The irony is that after discovering (or maybe re-discovery is more apt) Floyd in the 80s, I don't go more than a few days before needing my Floyd fix. For me, "Wish you..." and "Dark Side..." are right up there with Zeppelin and pretty much anyone else from that same period. So it's good to see you enjoying Floyd and feeling the same feeling from some of their stuff as I did. I wish I could rediscover them for the first time again, so I'm jealous. Then again, who could stay mad at someone who hears the soundtrack to my youth...and likes it? PS: it was good to see a reaction to the original studio track. Most folks doing reaction vids these days use a concert version to keep from using a copyright mask. Thanks for letting me relive this song through you.
I bought this album when it came out, as a teenager, played this on my little record player.I have been a Floydian for over 50 yrs, but this track takes me back to my bedroom, happy days ❤
Don’t know if you care all the way down to the granular level but note David’s arpeggios don’t change tempo when the alto sax comes in. It’s definitely subtle but when you realize that, your head spins. SO EXPERTLY WRITTEN AND COMPOSED!
Always gladness mixed with a tinge of sadness. I’m glad you have this now. You’ll listen to it a thousand times more. But you only get to hear it for the first time ONCE. And that’s just a cosmic shame. But there ya go….
Been a Pink Floyd fan since 1968. Was fortunate enough to attend five of their concerts. All their music's good. I don't really claim favorites. Wish you were here The wall Animals are concept albums. I realize you only have so much time but they are meant to be listened to begin to end. Out of order is like reading a chapter in the middle of a great novel. There's no context. With that said the album Animal seems appropriate . It's the musical version of George Orwell's Animal Farm. And since history repeats.... If you have to pick and choose Pigs three Different Ones Echoes live at Pompeii
Got my first Pink Floyd album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 69. Having grown up listening to the Big Bands of the 40’s & 50’s my parents listened to, Pink Floyd was a game changer. Every album got better and I was and still a fan till death…even after.
Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Floyd’s first album with Syd, released 56 years ago yesterday. Totally different from this, Syd cast a long shadow on this album too. It was a brilliant slice of pop psych whimsy ❤❤
Thank you for doing this reaction....one of my favorites. There is a second part to this composition: "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI - IX)" ... it completes (Parts I - V)
I-V opens the album and VI-IX closes it (fun fact, it was done that way mainly because all 9 parts wouldn't fit on one side of the vinyl) S hine on Y ou crazy D iamond and the other 3 tracks celebrate and lament Syd who was dropped from the band suffering severe mental health issues and the effects of drug abuse.
Sometimes there is such beauty and perfection in small details that most people probably don’t even hear. In Us and Them, there is this one piano note in the second half, may actually be a half chord, and that it’s. It’s there, it’s quick, and it’s perfect. In this song, shortly after the 9:10 point in your video, actually closer to 9:40, when David is channeling BB King somehow, there are two quick moments where his guitar note drops, like almost slightly out of tune but not really. It’s his bends that makes him such an amazing and emotive guitarist. Anyway, those two blink or you’ll miss it drops have always stood out to me, from the first time I heard this song when i was 12, which was a few decades ago now. I know I geek out on this stuff, but that is what is so amazing about Floyd. Not only does it never get old, you can be on your one thousandth listen and still somehow hear something you hadn’t before, or feel it connecting with your spirit in a different way than before. It doesn’t make sense. None of them were the most technically gifted musicians or singers, not by a long shot. But they will go down on the same level as Mozart or Beethoven somehow. I can never wrap my mind quite around how they did what they did with the skill set they came into it with. Just magicians is what they were.
Floyd is Deep Magic. Always takes me on a journey, no substances required. I see colors and shapes, whisps of smoke and light warp and weave in a beautiful tapestry. I am floating in space , timeless endless space surrounded by the beautiful ebb and flow of the changing colors of light. I become the light, the light is my emotions and the color is the sound and it echoes through the chambers of my mind and my spirit, I cannot tell where one thing ends and the other begins, there is only the light, and it lives inside of me but I also am the light. Lots of green and blue in the final track. And now I'm back in my body, just a man lying in bed with a phone tapping out words and trying to capture the wonder and failing miserably. Like I said, Deep Magic.
Very thoughtful indeed for you to remove your glasses, so we could see your eyes, as you explicitly explained. And yes, they were, appropriately, expressive! Even when closed with blissed-out wonder, lol! The windows of the soul, indeed. And SO much soul in this window Pink Floyd opened up for us. SO moving, touching, masterful. I believe the word "epic" is warranted here. Great reaction, thanks!
Yes! You have reach the BONUS level in modern music! Congratulations. The best thing is, once you've come this far, there's no more turning back, for ever. You may rest in musical peace now, but remain very much alive! I noticed you have already done most of this album. Believe it or not, the best has yet to come. Have a good trip Jon.
Yes, the two albums ("Dark Side Of The Moon" and "Wish You Were Here" are incredible. The production was exceptional back then (50 years ago) and it still is.
First time listening 'SHINE ON YOUR CRAZY DIAMOND' at your age??Where have you been, and you're passionate about music????It's 2023....With all my respect.
You may enjoy watching and listening to their live 1994 Pulse concert, Please check it out in entirety, the visual as well as the music is a most enjoyable journey to take.
I laughed at the fact you took your glasses off so we could see your eyes. But it Pink Floyd, everyone closes their eyes, especially first time & with headphones. Thanks
My favorite part? The way the Sax player switches instruments half way through and then as the song goes, you can tell he just didn’t want to let go. Another favorite is when I thought I was going to need to call the cerebral rangers to come and rescue you. Thought I lost you for a minute there John.

As they are "Concept Albums" I encourage you to listen to them as a whole. Wish You Were Here is a story, the most soulful of Pink Floyd, my favorite.
The sax coming in at that point was just the perfect sound - and then the change up to a syncopated pattern, just perfect. I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this, and for me, it's their best album.
My 1st time seeing Floyd was on the Animals tour, Milwaukee wis, 1977...Side note- when the Pig exploded i found a piece of it( Bacon?) In the parking lot and still have it today...Great Reaction Mr. Slop.
The albums should be listened to in their entirety... or at least one side at a time. They were designed for records, and you are missing the transitions when you listen to a song by itself, unless it's the last song on a side.
The first 5 or so mins are a masterpiece of sonic sound crafting in a minor key to be resolved with a MASSIVE major. Personally I prefer the last parts on side 2. You gotta do them too. Please?🙏 ❤ Vocals here are mainly Roger Waters. Gilmour recorded his initial solo alone in a large empty studio if I recall correctly. Hence the tone
The end of this song is the beginning of the next one Welcome to the Machine. It’s the best experience in my opinion to listen to them in one sitting. These two songs are the whole side A.
You would have had a better journey listening to part l through 9 nonstop, actually listening to the entire album nonstop from start to finish as intended is the ultimate journey my friend, keep discovering the old fogie music, you will understand why old fogies are the way we are, having this music come into our lives as it was released to the world, God Bless
As an old fogie myself, I find it refreshing to see young peoples reactions to great music. It brings back memories of hearing these albums when they first came out. You're right, this music shaped us. How could it not?
The song is more a eulogy of Syd Barrett, original band member who fell victim to overuse of psychedelics and/or schizophrenia. Even though Barrett was alive when the song was recorded, he was a completely different creature by that point.
Great song and reaction. It’s such a great concert opening song. Cool that you’ve listened to PF and now working up to this one you haven’t heard. It’s great live; recommended live pulse remastered SORROW. It’s mind blowing
What isn’t my favorite part? I think, when the first Sax came in out of nowhere, I believe it was a baritone sax, it floored me. Then the switch to the tenor sax to finish was just superb. I believe it was played by Rick Parry, could be wrong but the way it just fades like this part of the song, or life in general may be over but, not quite. You can try to put a genre to it but, it’s just Pink Floyd genius. I’m liking your channel so far.
Shine on you crazy diamond is about one of the founding members, Sid Barrett, who literally lost his mind. He is the crazy diamond in the song. In the early years of Pink Floyd, he was the driving force in band. After his demise, Roger Waters took over as the main song writer. David Gilmour and Roger Waters had many disagreements with the creative direction they were going. To the point they had to have a mediator guide the direction.
DEFINITELY do Parts 6-9 of this masterpiece! Do the entire album! This is dedicated to Syd Barrett, one of the founders of the band, who succumbed to mental illness due to massive use of LSD. With PF, it would be a very wise idea to have the lyrics available during the song. Or, if you prefer to just vibe out the first time, ( like pretty much all of us did) put your video on pause at the end of the song, read the lyrics, then come back and tell us what you think they mean. That’s the best way to handle Floyd.
4:55 What you are feeling is normal, It's called Sound Induced Altered State. Senses heightened, changes in heart-rate, changes in breathing, a feeling of weightlessness . All these things combined. Just from hearing music. Enjoy, it is a high like none other. oldtroll57
A piece of advice. To realize your reaction to the other 4 movements of the _Shine On_ Suite you could use this vinyl video: ua-cam.com/video/DDPTkjMkDKo/v-deo.html ... and, for yourself, you could then listen to it all over and in one piece. Have another nice trip ☺
David Gilmour proves that you don't have to be a flashy Speed Demon on the guitar to be great. He does more with 3 chords than lots of guys play with 1000
PF music is so well crafted, like a handmade chocolate for the ears. There's nothing jarring about it, silky smooth. It's got loads of space too so it's not tiring and heavy to listen to. I really love Waters's lyrics, he really wears his heart on his sleeve.
Over the years I have heard this a 1000 times, never gets old. It gives me the chills and tears every time. The emotional impact is unexplainable......
I agree it's just so timeless 💯
I just posted a rambling comment, having not yet read anyone else’s comments, and I also said something about it never getting old even after a thousand listens. We both said it because it’s absolutely true.
First time I heard Pink Floyd was in 1977 and it has impacted me in the same way! Probably the most profound music ever made.
That's exactly why Pink Floyd will always be musically relevant well into the future. When all of today's instantly forgettable drivel is just a footnote in history. Pink Floyd like Beethoven Mozart and Bach will always astounding music lovers
Absolute Masterpiece dedicated to Syd Barrett.

This was the album that introduced me to Floyd. 40 years later I’m still feeling it in my soul. Pink Floyd is an experience every time.
The switch from 6/8 time to 12/8 time in the last part is flawless and not many bands wouldn't even try it.

Saw Floyd 5 times. They always open with this song.

Or, if you prefer to just vibe out the first time, ( like pretty much all of us did) put your video on pause at the end of the song, read the lyrics, then come back and tell us what you think they mean. That’s the best way to handle Floyd.
David Gilmour = The G.O.A.T.
4:55 What you are feeling is normal, It's called Sound Induced Altered State. Senses heightened, changes in heart-rate, changes in breathing, a feeling of weightlessness . All these things combined. Just from hearing music. Enjoy, it is a high like none other. oldtroll57

David Gilmour. The most tasteful guitarist ever. Period.
Welcome to the world of being a Floydian. Your world has just expanded beyond the confines of our planet, enjoy the ride 🤙
A piece of advice.
To realize your reaction to the other 4 movements of the _Shine On_ Suite you could use this vinyl video:

... and, for yourself, you could then listen to it all over and in one piece.
Have another nice trip ☺
Listen... Shine On You Crazy Diamond part VI - IX
David Gilmour proves that you don't have to be a flashy Speed Demon on the guitar to be great. He does more with 3 chords than lots of guys play with 1000
How many sounds does that Strat make? (ALL OF EM)
give it a shot at ... ECHOES LIVE AT POMPEII 1971 ....
for your own enjoyment you must complete this journey by listening to parts VI- IX , same thing but funkier
Un ascolto pure di SHINE ON YOU CRAZY PART 6/9 è doverosa.
Per me forse anche più bella della Parte 1/5.
None of the melitron training guitarists of today can play like this.
Oops. Meant to say melitron trained.
Oh, and please react to the entire album. There are only 5 songs and they are all excellent!
great song to listen to when you're smoking some ed
it always amazes me when you say you are a music creator and you don't know pink Floyd's music.

PF music is so well crafted, like a handmade chocolate for the ears. There's nothing jarring about it, silky smooth. It's got loads of space too so it's not tiring and heavy to listen to. I really love Waters's lyrics, he really wears his heart on his sleeve.
