No oil changes or gas station fill up at high prices these days should account for something as far as price difference? My 2015 Fiat 500e in the US paid for itself after a few years. Granted I paid a lot less as it was a lease return at that time. Since then the price for it has appreciated here. I’m waiting for the Abarth E to show up here. Cheers!
It looks cool but they missed the mark with the low hp number honestly. They should have given it around 200hp at least and not 160. I don’t think the “tuner” image of Abarth makes sense for an EV but semantics aside I think it’s nicely done when judged on its own merits. The noise sounds ridiculous though.
Did James really not say anything about whether this car was front or rear wheel driven? Bit of a surprising omission?! From the comments I get the impression that it's front drive - but this is a little curious, because I thought the ev makers had come to a consensus that rear drive is better in 2 wheel drive full bevs. This is for reasons of traction - the weight distribution of a bev is completely different from a typical fwd car. The reason why fwd cars work as well as they do, well, up to 8/10 effort, is exactly because they have so much weight over the front axle. Typically ~ 63% of the cars mass, in fact. I understood that the ev car makers found that in a typical bev, there just wasn't enough weight over the front axle to give the required traction.
Yes - they claim this is a new platform, but it does look similar to the usual FWD platform with a motor bolted in place of an engine, instead of truly starting from scratch. If they put the motor in the back, under the rear seats, there could be useful space in the front as in the 1950s 500 :) I think that would work out well, as they’d have to engineer a proper rear suspension instead of the twist beam, and they could also dial down the steering assistance with the front wheel geometry not having to counter the effects of torque steer. Of course, for the same money, you can buy a Tesla Model 3 basic RWD version where they’ve already done all that and put in twice the power. Still, it would be nice to see the Abarth version of it
I just think this car makes no sense. It's not as fun as Abarth should be, so they added the fake engine noise and eye searing paint. Who is it for? EV buyers who want to pretend they have a petrol? Bizarre.
errrm, I think it will appeal to well heeled urbanites living in big, European cities, and perhaps people who have a short daily commute. Perhaps as a second car. A little bit of Italian style goes a long way. The price, though, is a bit eye-watering. This seems to be the case with small, chic full bevs, like the little Honda and mini e. When I think what I could buy with 34k, it's not a favourable comparison. Like an Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce, for example. But the buyers of cars like these don't think like that. The car market has become very diverse, and niche.
£34,000 for a fiat 500. Ridiculous. EV cars are just way out of reach for most people....and who wants to get stung for a new battery after a few years then get hit with road tax and expensive electricity; governments will eventually have to start taxing them.
The question is: how much distance do you have to travel to make up the £11k difference in price, assuming you have cheap-ish AC electricity rates and ability to charge at home.

I wonder if the early combustion car makers tried to make their cars sound like horse hooves? To pander to the concrete folks, the ones who cannot bend with change.
Early cars already made more noise than horse-drawn vehicles. Battery-powered cars make less noise than their ICE-powered brethren. Well done for having a go, though.
Electric cars are perfect for suburban use (ie most of England) where distances are small. Given the weight of the batteries, little progress has been made since milk floats were around. I have been waiting for this car since it was first announced but unfortunately the range is pathetic, especially on a cold UK day. With UK charging infrastructure still hit and miss then unless the 2nd Generation (?2024) has a better range then I will have to give it a miss 😢.
This Abarth is disappointing, and its fake ICE sounds tell us in no uncertain terms that Abarth considers them essential to the enthusiast experience. Whether they are or not is subjective, but I think we have to accept that electric cars are either silent to the occupants or sound like an electric motor. However, they give at least one compensation, which is instant torque. My personal opinion is that most ICE engines and their sounds are nothing to write home about. I only lament what I consider the unnecessary looming loss of truly great sounding ICE engines, like the Ferrari and Lambo V12s, the Audi/Lambo V10, Ferrari V8s, the great BMW straight sixes, and some V6s. Otherwise, I think there;s nothing for fear of EVs in and of themselves. They are far too expensive. But they have the potential to be very cheap and mobilise even more people. The problem is that Western governments seem opposed to the very mobilization of the masses that EVs could deliver, along with increased social/socio-economic mobility. Instead, in the West the promotion of the EV seems a pretext to severely increased costs of ownership of personal cars and getting most people out of personal car ownership and all of the social and socio-economic limits and losses that would bring with it. But by that time they hope to have us all in ghettos that you need a pass to get out of. What we need is some of the really cheap Chinese EVs to land on our shores. New EVs for under 10 grand is possible right now, as in China you can get them for less the US$5K. This Abarth is grossly overpriced and I hope it sells very poorly because of that. We need to send a clear message that we won't be blatantly rippped off.
Great review, as always. Hmmm. Really not sure. Design and looks are spot on! Certainly better than the Honda retro look... However! Surely new 2024 Mini Cooper e and indeed current 208e will be by far better... Nonetheless, a brave, bold attempt from Fiat. !

Can't really see the point of a performance version of a city car. Performance is inappropriate in a city and a city car is inappropriate on the open road.
This is the size car that is perfect for becoming an EV. Making Hummers into 9000lbs EV is stupid. One of those has enough batteries for multiple smaller cars. This is why EVs will never take over. Not in the near future at least.
The concept makes sense but to be honest the execution is terrible. If it really is marketed towards enthusiasts, it should've been rwd to even out the weight balance and for driving excitement. Also, 155hp is ridiculous for an EV, and the low range of the battery is unfortunate. Solid pass from me

Everybody hates it... plus it's a shame
i want it! perfect for greece! I have a house so is ok
We have an 500e and the 200mile figure is bullshit, it shows 250km ~155miles on a full charge but it pretty much does it in almost any condition
it is a nice city car, however, quite pricy. for a lawyer in rome a nice gadget. but last time i checked, i was weather in rome nor a lawyer.
when the latest LFMP batteries arrive in europe, they can shave off 5k€ of the fiat and abarth 500e. then, the sales numbers really go up.
Disposable cars. Nice but! Another Expensive disposable car. Anyone can drive a Ford t today. Can you drive one of those EV in 10 years?
I have been waiting for this car since it was first announced but unfortunately the range is pathetic, especially on a cold UK day. With UK charging infrastructure still hit and miss then unless the 2nd Generation (?2024) has a better range then I will have to give it a miss 😢.
I thought unique was just that. Very unique?
A bit pregnant
Just get the petrol
I noticed that when you showed it being charged that all the charges were paid available and working! Not like the real world
That was genuine! They weren’t closed off or anything. But we did get lucky…
Great review, as always. Hmmm. Really not sure. Design and looks are spot on!
Certainly better than the Honda retro look... However! Surely new 2024 Mini Cooper e and indeed current 208e will be by far better... Nonetheless, a brave, bold attempt from Fiat.
!
Need a kill switch put on the speaker.
interior looks good, bar the screen, which I would just break off.
outside, I get it, it's cute but still with a bit of go.
fake engine sound.... mmmmm, I don't know
Insanity pricing again.
it seems like... a petrol version would be better than this, who would have thought that? Lol
A petrol version is EVER BETTER than any electric cars!!!
@@nikjac79 yep, it was sarcasm on my side 😏
When I saw/heard one of these on display At Farnborough recently I thought some one was taking the piss. Only children need a brum brum noise.
There is no future for the affordable hot hacth in a EV world.
There's no future for affordable cars full stop.
Stellantis on their way to kill the Abarth brand. It’s just a Citroen , Peugeot, Vauxhall EV parts bin special under a nice frock
What I think is, sadly, that the Italians are, once again, blowing smoke up ........
Someone playing a fake sound this loud on an ev should be ashamed lmao
It makes no sense that this is fwd. It’s far easier to make an ev rwd than an ice car. Just buy an mg 4 if you want a fun ev.
Solid pass from me
It looks cool, but that sound just isn’t there.. Best part of the video was the ducks. 🦆 🦆
