There are a LOT of callbacks to previous episodes, but unless you just watched them or re-watched them, you are going to be lost. I feel that's why this show doesn't appeal to a larger audience that is more familiar with episodic cartoons.

@@Ray_Vun I re-watched the series before season 4 dropped and enjoyed it. Maybe serialized shows with an overarching story aren't for you, and that's okay.
I think the show is trying SO hard to be unpredictable and it works, but at the same time it's so all over the place that you get so confused. I really hope future episodes flesh out the characters. On the other hand, i am SO GLAD they finally gave elfo a decent arc. He has easily been my favorite character since episode one, and I'm glad the writers gave him his own story.

"It was Dagmartha all along!!" - every Disenchantment finale in a nutshell. I feel like the reveals are something they're trying to use to mock shows like Once Upon A Time, where we'd get a lot of similar maguffins and mysteries dragged out, but it's crossed from mockery into just... repeating the tropes.

I enjoy the series, but being 4 season in and not knowing any slightest clue on what's the curse is or bean's prophecy get really frustrating. One of the bigger issue to me is ending on a cliffhanger and going back to status quote in the first 2 episode of the new season. Like I wish we had more of Lucy in heaven.
That to also annoys me. Like they make it look like its gonna be some epic thing only for it to last 3 episodes top and go to "SEASON 1 YEAH" like no. I do enjoy the show but I would prefer if they stuck with the story longer instead of trying to be the same every season

Part 3 felt like it was getting on the right track, and now Part 4 feels like it's finally FINALLY comfortable in its own skin.
Now it just need to work on its pacing issues and figure out WHERE it wants the story to go.

Season 5 didnt really change much, dagmar is still fullfilling the prophecy or whatever.
But that's part of the problem. It shouldn't take THREE SEASONS for a show to "get good" when it should have started good, this is how you lose viewers. Shows like this NEED to be planned out before moving ahead.

I feel so conflicted about the season actually! There’s so much that I love about it and yeah I feel like it didn’t touch nearly enough into its details. Honestly I think that’s better than just solving everything- it leaves you with stuff to think about
Agreed. If each part had 20 episodes to flesh out the story line, you could begin and end each season largely the same way and it would feel more satisfying. I think the issue is trying to put 20 episode story line in ten, 20 minute episodes. I watched season four like a long movie.
You hit the nail on the head with both Dagmar and Toffee - do these characters really have some big master plan, or is this just the writers' way of saying that they have NO idea what the villain's plan is and that it's just an easy, stalling tactic to disguise the fact that "they're planning vaguely important" is just another clickbait, "mystery-mongering" gimmick to keep suckers watching?
Toffee could have been more interesting, if they had expanded on his origins and used his mentor from that lore book they sold. But then they pivoted away from it all, and made it about Eclipsa’s family, and Mina. Which I think most people ultimately didn’t appreciate. I mean, for me, the Eclipsa stuff was working, but then they took it in the least interesting direction possible.
Man, every time I’m reminded of season 4 and the finale, I get sad.
Dagmar just reminds me of when you microwave fish and the stench is always there even after the fish is gone, I wanted her to be an interesting villain with interesting motives, but in keeping her mysterious I literally cannot force myself to care about anything she does.
The thing I that made me more excited about this season is: when we see the war flashbacks, the powerful attack that killed all the elves and mermaids was very similar to the magic that Bean is seen welding. Maybe the debt to hell has to do with how that war ended in favor to the humans, and also the source of Dagmar's powers.
But yeah, the rest of the show is sort of messy and all over the place. If they got their shit together, I'd enjoy it more. Right now I simply watch it for the shits and giggles.
"X revelation happens...Cool. How does this matter?" You could plug it into any of these recent serialized cartoons (for kids or adults, 2010s onward), and it would fit perfectly. Each show just dangles hints to some big revelation, and then it drags on and on and on for a bazillion episodes until - maybe, just maybe - we get to find out why we should care.

I disagree, don't you know that stories are just mystery boxes. Wondering about potential is more important than anything else. Theorizing leads to social media engagement and UA-cam videos. That's all that matters to "networks"

@@AzathothTheTrueGod Destiny is a spot on comparison. They made an interesting world that obviously has a lot of potential. But we never get to see any of it! Why are Trogs important? Who are we shooting in Destiny? Don't know, but here is something that looks cool.
I wasn't that big of a fan of part 4, but I liked how Mop Girl had a lot of character progression in it

Unironically Elfo started to become my favorite character this season (I also really like Bear Boy and Bean). I liked that this season had a bit of anti-fascism in it and the comedy was funny this season. I also really liked the ending and the romance made my little lesbian heart so happy. I really liked this season personally

This is my absolute favorite show. Chazzzz is the best character everyone else are just side characters. The show being so unpredictable actually works for people like me who just naturally overthink and read into everything, it doesn’t give you a choice but to just wait and see what happens next. The show being as cryptic as it constantly is makes it a more relaxing mindless watch for me and the pacing works well with my low attention span. Also as a fnaf fan the first few years of confusing puzzle pieces that you know fit together but are always missing core pieces makes this show seem tame.

Actually, that's precisely the reason you would not like this show. Once you start reading too much into it, you realize that there's basically no plot going on and that the writers are just making stuff up as they go.
This show just needs to stick with a plot and explore the issues, they milk the story line and sweep any big reveal under the rug, but none the less I absolutely adore this show.
But I also love seeing a fantasy show about a hero trying to be good but also flawed and not a hero many of us see
Its relaxing. The pallete, the sound design, the drawings. Its just a calming cottagecore show with some laughs. Mop girls name is mary if I remember correctly. Mary the mop girl.
Luci this season was kind of annoying to me, they really went overboard with the whole scatting thing and the elfo and luci duo is getting almost painful

I agree with almost all you said, but honestly, I'm just trying to enjoy the the ride and expect/hope everything will come together eventually. Sometimes it tries too much, but it's a delight seeing, Lucy become heroic, Elfo looting dead bodies, Zog becoming a sweet good man, father and husband, Una not being cliche evil stepmother but something her own etc. Nobody is near what they were at the beginning, I just hope they get more stable in storytelling and not just rely on twists.
Ps: Ursula being alive was never a cliffhanger, after Zog and baby Balu leave for the castle at the end of episode, you can see her in a net hanging of the zeppelin, thats why they didn't have to over-dramatize her death. My biggest shock was when Derek "killed" that elf with the pipe. Most death was comically played of, but seeing red blood, everyone's shock, and sweetest derek do that was 😮. Shame it was staged tho
Well, he asked for show recommendations, he's done anime before, and he loves shipping insanity. So I'm going to toss "My Next Life as a Villainess" out there.
A girl geek has a fateful meeting with truck-kun and finds herself reincarnated into this Pride and Prejudice style fantasy world that is an exact replica of her favorite dating sim. The thing is, she's reincarnated as Katerina, the game's antagonist who ends up dead or exiled in all of the game's endings.
The first couple episodes are spent with Katerina living through her second childhood trying to build relationships and aquire skills needed to avoid her "doom flags." By the time she's 15 (again) and ready to head to the magic school that is where the game starts, she think her intimate knowledge of the game is going to be her best advantage. Thing is, by being a decent caring person instead of the entitled mean girl Katerina was in the original timeline, she changed the childhoods of the major characters and therefore turned them into very different people. By the time she gets to the magic school, all the romantic prospects are in love with HER before the game's protagonist even shows up.
And then the protagonist falls in love with Katerina. And the sister of one of the dateable men is in love with Katerina. And the nominal fiance of one of the dateable men is in love with Katerina.
Yes folks, this is a BISEXUAL harem comedy.
The thing is in a lot of shows in this genre is that you can start hating the protagonist for stringing their many love interests along. My Next Life gets around this by making Katerina kind, courageous, generous and deeply stupid. She doesn't realize she's stringing them along partly because she is focused on not dying. Partly because the signals the 7 lead contenders for her heart bounce right off her thick head.
Even if Chorus doesn't pick this up, I recommend it to anyone with a Crunchyroll subscription.

I would argue that Bad Bean was foreshadowed in a conversation that she had with herself in front of Mora in Season 3 while on the boat.

Near the end of the season Bean seemed like she was done with the magic of Dreamland, so we might be getting a Star vs the Forces of Evil series ending next time.

One thing we know the prophecy already: dagmars kingdom had a rat based economy and used magic to turn the snake based economy of the sand world to stone. As payment for the magic the devil required dag to kill zog but she failed, so now he requires zog dead and something to do with bean.
Zog and the troggs are also probably entertained because of the spelling of the o in their name. Probably aog the first king poisoned the elves and only when the og line dies and the elves sit on the throne will the trogg curse be broken.
Also i think beans true gift is the ability to change or undo enchantments and curses thus the name of the show “disenchantment”
You could see that the zeppelin caught Ursula as it leaves - she was hanging underneath it in a new net - so it wasn't completely out of nowhere.
I think there are two main problems:
1- Groening probably just isn't used to pace serialized stories, Futurama episodes were largely self-contained same as The Simpson, what continuity there was was very light and mostly character development without really any overarching mysteries and whatnot. You can tell it's almost a back and forth between straight up self-contained comedy episodes and more serialized adventures often episodes divided between the two;
2- the comedy. Futurama wasn't a straight up parody of sci-fi but more of a sci-fi comedy while Disenchantment at times feels like a Scary Movie-style parody of fantasy as seen by someone that doesn't know much about it beyond pop culture soundbites. Especially at the start at times it takes aim at classic or Disney-style fairy tales, other it does "dung ages" jokes, other times it parodies Game of Thrones ("let's make a gag about how dangerous a throne made of swords is! What doyou mean that is exactly the point in the source material already?"), etc almost like they didn't really have a focus or an objective beyond "fantasy parody". The rest of the comedy is very hit or miss, with a lot of overly long gags that frankly come off more awkward than funny or even just awkwardly funny.
The result is not even the worst thing ever but it's kind of bland, paradoxically I get the "fantasy Futurama" vibes more from "Legend of Vox Machina" even with the different comedy style.
This season genuinely had me questioning if Disenchantment had already jumped the gun. Also I'm frustrated how they just reset the season finale with the first episode of the new season time and time again
With the way part 4 ended, i'm already starting to wonder if they have plans for a part 5? Because the show can't end with that kind of cliffhanger can it?
I sure hope it doesn’t end like that🥴 I need more Mora, but I really hope they don’t go a STVFOE route with it and just make it *all* about Mora and Bean. I hope they still keep a plot and don’t make it all about shipping

Right? There is no meaning to any adventures around the time of steamland. There might be a story, but the main characters stay far away from it.
The ursa death left so little of an impact on me that I legit forgot she was supposed to be dead and when she turned up in the freak show I was like "oh no, they captured her too" rather than "wait, shes alive?"
I like Disenchantment. It's not perfect but I like it. For me it's a 6/10 but if those really good moments happened more often it would be a solid 7/10

Right, and based off of context from the last part we already knew he was part Ogre. There’s so many other plot points they could’ve fleshed out, but no.
I had called that that Elfo was the son of the Ogar that only got one line a while ago. My theory is Dagmar was either going to use Bean as a puppet ruling if she was obedient but since Bean isn't, used her reckless to become queen of hell while also being queen of Dreamland. So she could also bring Bad Bean back with the goop like Luci or claim Bean is dead and she's queen again. I'm also guessing that Dagmar will have made everyone her enemy they will join Beans side to beat Dagmar and put Bean on the thrown again.
The show does the same thing it has done each season.
1. Character from previous season who died is resurrected in first or second episode
2. Long standing question is finally answered underwhelming after we forgot about it a few seasons ago.
3. Many more questions are created that won’t get answered
4. Show ends with Bean and her mom having some sort of problem.
5. Most episodes have no point and have lost most to all comedy.
6. The story is non existent
7. Last Jedi syndrome

I found part 4 to be very interesting, it may have had it's ups and downs but i still enjoyed it overall!
According to me the biggest issue with the Disenchantment is timing of ideas. The Simpsons is episodic series sittuated in todays era. Futurama is sittuated in Earth in year 3000 and years after. Disenchantment is sittuated to the fantasy world. And this is core of issue. Authors cannot use full potential of medieval era, napoleonic era or era between the Worldwars, because of they are smashed together.
In other words, if authors made world in first season something between Fable II and Sir Pratchett´s novel, than they could let Dreamland evolved. In case of stories that means make first 5 seasons about Dagmar, elfs, bears and Hell, second 5 seasons about evolution, Steamland, science and magic etc.

I adore this show and I am rooting so hard for it to be great… but the pacing problem is grating on me.. I just want it to follow through on what it sets up

I liked this season, i liked the development Zog got, and i kind of agree on the whole Dagmar thing. And i'm glad they focus more on Bean's love life, that poor girl is under a lot of stress, and she needs stress relief, :P
As for which show you should look at next, i highly recommend Camp Cretaceous on Netflix, it's a good show.

3:55 It waaas there but it's blink and you miss it. In P1, Luci possesses Bean and mentions an evil her within her while he was being exorcised by Big Joe. Very small, but it's there.
You gotta watch Vox Machina, seems like it’d be right up your alley, feels like Disenchantment meets Castlevania.

This show just keeps adding new shit and not finishing up preexisting storylines but I don't find it interesting anymore sadly it's made me start thinking "when is this show gonna end? Or when is something actually going engage me and progress a previous storyline?" Because all the show is at the moment is something happening and not progressing

Something that I’ve noticed with myself and this show is that because there is so much that happens I kinda forget about everything. I think it’s partly due to the pacing and it doesn’t give my brain enough time to focus on certain plot lines and events. There is just so much that gets kinda squeezed into a small amount of time that I forgot so much of what happens
I’ve been so distracted with other stuff, I didn’t even know the season was out! I guess I’m binge watching this tonight.
I just love Dagmar cuz I love that she somehow always has something going on. Even if it makes no sense or had no setup.

Also- about bean and Elfo: I wish they would just, stop hitting they have this connection that goes beyond love? Is like they are trying to make another Fry and Leela, but still make her date the mermaid.
Pick one or the other! I always see those, little hints that Bean and Elfo are not just best friends - is the characters saying Bean is his Gf or that he has a crush on her, Bean not knowing how to explain that she kissed Elfo, or how she always stops everything to save him, even putting herself in danger to help him, and getting Really angry with someone take him. Or when Elfo seen to be always thinking of her, and also stopping everything to help her out
And I get it, they are best friends. They love and respect each other, but sometimes is like they go too far? If that makes sense.
If this was only meant to be a joke like "Haha Elfo is in love with Bean, haha nice guy finish last" they should have stopped at season one, not drag on to this day. Bc that gives the impression something else is going on???
Is just.. a lack of focus honestly. Is like the writers want everything. The complex storyline, the reveals, but also the lay back serialization, the mermaid romance and the will they won't they thing.
Thanks for the review! Despite watching it all the way til now, I've been disappointed with this series due to the way it format itself (a big build up at the final but return to status quo in the second episode and given more questions than answered).
As I was fully prepared for spoilers, I think I gonna give this season a passed or rather watched it sometime later than now like when I am really bored and got nothing better to do!
To be honest I knew since season 2 trogs were messed elves. But I thought Dagur had used magic to mess them up. I didn't realize they were just mutated versions of elves.
disenchantment is amazing, it had its bad parts (mainly season 2) but i still love it
I actually think they did drop some soft of hints of a doppelganger Bean more in part 3 than in part 4. Like when Dagmar and Bean are sitting by the pool of refection and Dagmar talks about how Bean believe there was a "little water girl" in her reflection but that is what Dagmar told her. She straight up states this. And also in the scene with Mora and Bean where they're talking on the boat and Bean goes on this long tangent about her inner monologues and it's pretty extensive argument with herself.
Damn what the hell! Didn't even remember that part! Where Dagmar shows Bean that pond, and that explanation about the "little water girl".
@@mischievousjr.9299 I know right? I only realized cause I watched Part 3 and 4 for the first time back to back over the course of two days.
To me at the very least- it didn't feel like Dagmar PLANNED to marry the Devil. She wholeheartedly wanted to throw her daughter in as her substitute. But when Bean was able to wiggle out of it and make Dagmar the Queen of Hell; that smirk was less of an 'Oh I planned this all along and more of an 'Oh well, time to adapt and use this to my advantage somehow.'
Dagmar would sooner nuke herself and the surrounding area before ever showing weakness.
I love this show, I didn't watch Futurama so maybe that has something to do with it but I watched the heck out of season 4 and I'm glad we have someone like you to talk about it.

Watching this after the final season: it’s points out the same issues as previous. Like they just shrug off and say unanswered questions and plot holes are okay.
Tbh, it always feels like this show never gets talked about, so I'm constantly worried that the most latest season will be its last. Glad to see it's still going thus far. Unlike The Midnight Gospel which I'm still mad about. Please can Netflix revisit that one or have Adult Swim pick it up? I want to know what happens next after that wild season finale.
Yeah I still committed to watching the series but I’m just feeling so BORED whenever I’m watching the show, I try denying that feeling but almost nothing gives that somewhat exciting feel from Immortality necklace to the Season one finale. But after Season 2 it just goes downhill for me.
I’ll admit Season 3 gets interesting but it STILL doesn’t really have me excited to know more about what’s going to happen.
It’s season 4 and I still don’t feel anything about the show.
I feels like I watched 10 episodes of Nothing every time I finish a season. Honestly if it’s not for the genuinely intriguing story and the few characters I like (Bean and Luci, Zog and maybe Elfo). I would have truly given up on this show.

Completely share your sentiment. This review was spot on.
S3 was solid and got me excited for S4 (whereas previously, I watched this show only when I was bored). But dang, gotta be honest and say S4 was a real let down. For exactly the reasons you pointed out - each reveal was underwhelming because it still didn't tie the overarching plot together, the disjointed subplots were annoying (e.g. I was so confused why we're having yet another Zog episode, emphasizing him feeling romantically "lonely" this time, until I realized oh, it's to shoehorn in a bear son..that was the point), and nothing Bean did to Dagmar yielded any real consequences.
There needs to be more story development in more questions answered especially since we have to wait a year to two for the next part
A small thing the show could do to make me think it cares about its reveals is have the elves attempt to make an alliance with the gnomes. You could even have Kissy be engaged to a gnome prince.
Continue to show Elfo as the bad boy half elf because he is not in anyway comfortable anymore with the gnomes.
It can also start by having Bean talk to Mora about the mermaid skeleton. Yes the whole “Princess finds out her kingdom was founded on imperialist conquest” was done with Star vs, but I care about this princess discussing that revelation with her mermaid girlfriend.

To me it felt like there are stretching a chewgum that is starting to lose flavour. Instead of telling what was Dagmar plan or what the kingdom curse is all about there just throw another mystery like (SPOILERS FROM NOW ON) mermaids being in war with Utopia along with elves and they have to do something with curse too somehow, or that evil side of Bean inside of her head which Zog seems already knew that could happend, or even the Moon has to do with this mess. Yes, we already got Elfo real mother, and how Zog had another son with the she bear, but still we still know nothing about what is going on in Utopia. Maybe it had to that I`ve watched some theory videos that are guessing right about the plot, but is clearly becoming more evident there are trying to keep the mystery way longer than it should. I am talking about you, mop girl! Hop they upgrade in the fifth season.

I enjoyed your review on season 4. I feel the humor is one of the best aspects of the show. My issue with season 4 is the many plot lines/arcs that seem to be wrapped up in one episode or felt incomplete. The only arc that worked was Elfo’s.
The earlier seasons feel less static upon rewatch. I care more about the characters now so I'm interested in the development, but the first time I was like "come on, get to the point already". The animation and hidden jokes also make it worth the rewatch. It has a unique appeal, but I'm hooked.

I was so desperate for more Bean x Mora this season and the 3 seconds we got just wasn’t as fleshed out as I was hoping considering they did decide to progress this storyline. Also yes, more Oona is a MUST!!!

I love this series as a whole, the 4th part was set up through the first 3 parts. Idk how many more parts theyll make but id guess 1 or 2 more parts
There's been no news as to whether or not we will get another season because originally it was renewed for Just Four Seasons or parts and I worried that this show make a canceled and I wish they would finish the story this season but they give us more questions than answers while they give us an answer for Elfo and his Origins we don't really get to know the deal with Dagmar and her Mission with hell and also bean and her girlfriend maybe mermaid I just wish Matt Groening I finished with part 4 and rather than continue with the cliffhanger again for a part 5 that may not come.
I agree, with the way it ended the show needs a part 5 they can't just end it with a cliffhanger like that.

Personally I agree, I love this show. The unpredictable storyline is really enjoyable, not knowing what's gonna happen next is awesome but a lot of things happen that just dont make any sense. Trogs and Elves are the same? But the show doesn't explain why. I hope they work on this instead of always introducing things that have no place

Actually, I'm glad you're talking about it because I just watched the last episode and I'm have no one irl to scream about it with me.
I watched the first season, and enjoyed it! It was fun, darkly magical, it felt like some good footing. Then there was the second season... And yeah if you looked at it from a certain angle it kinda made sense for Bean... But oh... My... Gosh... I have never felt so bored!!! It was so formulate it hurt!!! I guess from what I've heard I'll give it another go... But I am so glad I wasn't alone on that one.
Best character for me this season would be Oona. I love her, she doesn't love the king but she stayed with him to take care of him. Eventhough she left Bean, I think it was important for Bean to learn how to be independent.
I think season 4 isn't that great, mainly because: the curse is still a mystery, the 'shadwap' woman's warning to Bean is also a mystery (chasing her all the way to the city felt like it had no purpose or had no place this season) too many unimportant side romances, Bean's rudeness to her younger brother and pig guy, not even one major villain was defeated or caused enough damage.
To keep it real at this point I like Disenchantment more than I ever liked the Simpsons or Futurama. I adore the more sex positive/feminist themes, it vibes well with our modern day and Abi does an incredible job making Beans comedic timing and emotional dialogue pack a punch. I like story and character over comedy, and Futurama was always too jokey and too shy about confirming Fry and Leela for me to get invested in the characters. Long live Bean and Mora
What I like with disenchantment is that we know as much as the characters, so they can pull a solution or obsticle out of the thin air since it hasn't been established they can't and we know we don't know everything

It's a Spanish anime-inspired cartoon adapted from a book series.
The show, by all accounts, isn't great. It very much feels like amateurs making their first show.
But it is short, has only 10 episodes total, and things get REALLY interesting ship-wise in season 2.
I watched it casually and ended up binging the entire thing in one night because ship-wise that show has done things I have never seen before in animation.
Not enough people talk about that show, probably because it's hard to recommend, but I think the ship alone makes for a very entertaining topic.
(I don't wanna spoil the direction the ship goes, because it's best experienced if you're not expecting it.)
The whole evil bean thing did have an explanation though. It wasnt that mysterious bc she litterally drank the sacred goo. Which can do weird things

About Toffe, there would be another reptile man named Seth who would be the final villain of SVTFOE, apparently he would be the main reason for Toffe's actions, but the creators decided that there was no more time to introduce a new villain. So they left all the information about him in the damn Magic Book of Spells and never mentioned it in the series.

I loved disenchantment since part 3 came out and I still do it’s one of my favorite shows ever but part 4 felt kinda rushed for some reason and I also forgot about beans powers even though I rewatched all the season like 4 times lol
But I really liked season 4
Biggest problem I got with Disenchantment is we're in season 4 now, probably a season 5 coming up. And yet we STILL have no clue what anyone wants because this show can't just spit it out and say who what where why. I would much rather the show just spit it out what Dagmar/Hell wants. what the prophecy about Bean is, and why everyone wants Dreamland then keep jerking us around with teases. Also death has no meaning in this show because nobody dies and STAYS dead. I will admit season 4 at least answered questions like who Elfo's mom is, the trogs...but at the same time they really gotta decide on what the hell they want to do with Zog, either kill him off for good or give him something to do, he was getting on my nerves.
I just want answers, is that too much to ask for season 5!?!??!?!!?
