Same. I was 12 and this was the first cd I bought. I wore out both of those albums. It was a great time to be a Metallica fan, because they we’re putting out so much music at that time. Load in 96, Reload in 97, Garage Inc in 98, and S&M in 99.

These 2 albums, are actually really fucking good. It takes time for you to get used to it, but I think these albums really speak for themselves. And I disagree with the “selling out” part. Most of these songs are not the same old Metallica, with a lot of different styles mixed in. I think there are maybe 4 songs total on both albums that are played on the radio. I cant say that’s really selling out. Most of the songs on here are really creative, and I think the style change is cool. Overall I think people blow this album off because of the bs that shouldn’t matter. People love just shitting on these albums, and complain about the dumbest things. For me, this album is something different, but a welcome change. This album deserves more respect. I respect your opinion, but I completely disagree with your assessment.

I can totally see that. This album, and the next, was a total change up for the band. Load was my first Metallica album, gifted to me by my older brother in 1996 when I was 11. It was also the first vinyl record I ever bought at 36 y/o. I absolutely love this album, the songwriting is concise but it takes risks and chances well outside of the usual Metallica palette, and it sounds phenomenal overall. It's a terrific Hard Rock album and I don't really know what to say to someone who doesn't think the same, other than eventually you might get it. Load throws everyone off at first.

Looking back, Load and Re-load are massively underrated albums in my opinion. Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are some of the bands best work - absolute epics. Throw in songs like 'Low Man's Lyric' and 'Fixxxer' from Re-load and you have a bunch of hidden gems/deeper cuts. There's a lot of filler on both albums, but the best of both CDs combined into one would have been a killer single album.

Do I like this album better than the first five albums? No but I put those first five Metallica albums on a very high pedestal so even though I don’t think it’s as good as the first five, I really do love the Load album.
It’s not the album I put on if I want to listen to metal music, I’ll put on either one of the first five Metallica albums, Pantera , Sepultura, Black Sabbath, Fear Factory , Slayer, etc. but I’ve always been a fan of a lot of different genres and even though it’s not a thrash album, I still think objectively it’s some really good music.
I travel in a work truck all over the country and it’s one of those albums that if I just need to do some mellowing out or some deep thinking I’ll put that album on and I just really enjoy it.
I understand the people that think that the only good music is extreme metal music, whether it’s thrash, death, metal, or whatever , then, yes I understand why they wouldn’t want to listen to this album, but just as someone who appreciates good music, no matter where it comes from I don’t think more than two years have went by since this album came out where I haven’t listen to it all the way through.

  • @bdr113080
    @bdr113080 Рік тому +7

And as far as the whole “selling out” thing goes I think people really need to think long and hard about what that phrase means because it really means doing something that you wouldn’t normally do or you don’t really want to do for money or you’re doing it to please everyone else, but you’re not feeling it.
The two highest selling Metallica Records are And Justice For All and The Black Album. If it was just a financial thing they were going after they would have just made an album that was a mix of those two, and if they were making the album that everyone else wanted them to make it sure as hell would not have been what was on the load album. I think some people are just so close minded that if it’s something they don’t like them, there has to be a dark reasoning behind it. It can’t be because that’s just what Metallica felt like doing, it’s because they are not good people and they do things for money. I think anyone over the age of 19 years old thinking like this probably has a lot of other problems in life with how the view the world and it’s probably costing them friendships.
I would never try to argue with anyone about any type of art whether it’s music or television or movies or whatever, it’s all objective, but when you start telling people that the reason they did, this is for selling out purposes, and stated as a fact, that’s when those people just look stupid . If they wanted to sell out and keep everyone happy and do what everyone wanted them to do they would not have made this album. Metallica has more balls than most bands because they’ve never been afraid to just do what the fuck they want to do because they’ve had people crying over them for 30 years.
If I hear an album, I don’t like, I just don’t listen to it. I don’t spend the next 30 years harassing people that like the album and crying about it. But that’s the metal community for you. A bunch of bitches that cry constantly.

As a Metallica fan that tries to have an open mind, this was initally a hard listen as well. I somewhat agree on most takes, except that I really found Hero of the Day being on of my favorites from the album.
While I wouldn't say the band is trying to imitate something they're not, I can definitely see that they are struggling to find their own identity within this new sound. This is actually one of the main reasons I really enjoyed HWTSD and 72 Seasons; especially the latter, since you can clearly see they are comfortable with their sound.

At the same time even though their music was not metal and thrash anymore all the thrash metal bands felt betrayed because of the direction Metallica was going at the time, but to be honest Metallica did the right thing by going to alternative which worked out for them in the late 90's.

I got the impression this reviewer was unfamiliar with the subject matter and did not take the time to give it a fair shake. I also mocked this album when it came out in 1996, but that was because I was an immature 15 year old kid who wanted testosterone songs like Fight Fire with Fire. Now as an older man (42yo) I greatly appreciate the songs and especially the lyrics about personal trauma. "This thorn in my side is from the tree I planted. It tears me and I bleed." (Lyrics inspired by a poem of Lord Byron, 1788-1824. Seems to be about an addiction that has gotten out of hand.) To me, Until It Sleeps calls to mind cancer and chemotherapy; "sleep" could refer to either cancer remission or death. In Mama Said, the lyric: "I need your arms to welcome me, but a cold stone is all I see" is one of Hetfield's most vulnerable (penned to his mother who died when Hetfield was only 16). FYI many albums were 78 minutes because that was the max length of an audio CD. Load is cliche blues rock with lyrics that grow in meaningfulness over time as the listener experiences life with all its inevitable heartbreak, death, disappointment, and regret. Cheers and best wishes to you.

Exactly! While personally this isn't my favorite era of Metallica, I certainly can respect they were willing to take a risk and try a new direction musically that, to their credit, they wanted to do. You can certainly feel the passion in the songs they wrote, even if the style change isn't to old-school fans' liking. And the band still enjoys playing those Load/Reload tracks LIVE till this day.
Can't really say the same with their Big 4 peers and their "sellout" albums tho. Slayer never touched Diabolus In Musica again after that phase. Same with Megadeth with Risk (which arguably was more of a sellout attempt than Load/Reload imo) and twice with Super Collider. Anthrax I can sorta give a pass since John Bush was fronting the band from Sound of White Noise till We've Come For You All, but still felt somewhat forced.

As someone who loves both Metallica and Megadeth I find it odd that SOME Metallica fans stick up for Load/Reload (2 albums I've always liked) but then are so quick to not give that same mentality or consideration to Risk.
You say Load wasn't a sellout album and I agree with that. Like you said, they were trying something different. Yet when Megadeth did that with Risk, you're so quick to say they sold out.
I get there are some Metallica fans that just hate Megadeth and vice versa, but at the very least be consistent with what you say.

"Boomer rock" "Try hard" 😂 And no, im not laughing at your petty jokes. Clearly everything about this albulm went over your head; unfortunately for you you aint Drax and couldnt catch it before it went past you.
Clearly didnt come in with an open mind, like 99.9% of every Metallica fan at the time. The departure in styles from TBA to the Loads was greater than AJFA to TBA that's for sure. Im not gonna completely dismiss everything you said, Ronnie is in my all time bottom 3 Metallica songs (youll hear #1 in Reload). But if youre not gonna be able to appreciate a track like Mamma Said and call it fake anything is really a slap in the face of the genuine feeling James put into the song lyrics and music.
    Next time, YOU try harder.

Here's the thing about the Load & Reload era, Young Grasshopper.
Both of these albums are not really good but if you cherry pick the good ones from both, you have an albums worth of great songs.
The bad ones definitely deserve it, but don't be so hard on the songs that are actually good on Load.

Look, i get it, if you were there as a fan when Master of Puppets came out, i understand how someone could consider Load to be trash upon its release. But this is a GREAT album. The problem is that it has the name Metallica on it. Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are highlights.

Well, I definitely disagree with this, as I’m a fan of the Load records. But I do appreciate your more thoughtful and nuanced critique of the albums. I remember getting into Metallica around 2000-2001 and being irritated by all the juvenile and outright nasty takes on the Load albums that I was finding on the internet. So it’s refreshing to see that there are now much more thoughtful and fair critiques of the albums, even if I personally don’t agree with them.

Its your opinion and you are entitled to have one, but I wont hide that I disagree completely on your review. Load has some weaker songs, but it also has one of the best songs made by Metallica. Even though I started my journey with first 4 albums, but Im gonna be honest, Load might be my top 3 and overall I think its one of their best albums. Load is a pure art to me, with deep lyrics and very heart touching vibes. Glad they wanted to experiment with new Sounds cuz they made something special

With respect… Maybe “load: an initial listen” would be a more apt title for the video.
Load came out when I was 17 and has the nostalgia factor… But I really like the album. Of course I wouldn’t put it above RTL (my fave), MOP, AJFA, or Metallica. But solid. I think until it sleeps, bleeding me, and the outlaw torn are Metallica classics; and personally I also love the house that Jack built, mama said, and thorn within.
I think had they omitted the three weakest cuts (poor twisted me, for example) it would be a better album and much tighter… Hell they had to chop off the very end of outlaw torn because it was exceeding the available length of a compact disc.

You may look into how these songs were written and recorded. Reload may then make a little more sense. While both of these records talk about James' heroin addiction a lot, Reload doubles up on it while load dealt with a lot of depression. They are a far cry from lightning-justice. It's not thrash in any wat but I have come to like them a lot. St anger on the other hand...If you like trashing their material, just wait till you get there.

    Fuel
    Memory remains
    Devils Dance
    Until it Sleeps
    Hero of the Day
    Bleeding Me
    Fixxer
    Unforgiven 2
Outlaw Torn - the studio version is bit boring, the Orchestra from S&M brings this song to life.

People alwaus complain about their long "drawn out" songs but they did the same shit on the 80s records everyone hails as the greatest. It seems like you went into this with preconceived notions about the record. Just because it isnt super fast thrash and its different doesnt mean its bad. I know its bad when you talk bad about the classics this album has like theyre generic lol. They arent trying to be fake this album came from the heart they just did what they wanted to do. You didnt even listen to the good parts of several of the songs. You just want it to be short and generic and not have diff sections like metallica albums always have. Its ironic that youre calling it generic when some of this stuff is some of the more unique things theyve done. You went into this with preconcieved notions. It came out when i was 13 i didnt like it as much as the older records but it had alot of great tracks (some of them you didnt even listen to long enough to get into the better parts) If you cant go into it with an open mind without preconcieved notions you most likely are not gonna like load.

The Cure is complete filler I think. I enjoy Load and Reload. That was “my” Metallica. This was what Metallica looked and sounded like when I started listening to them so maybe there is some nostalgia tied in. I’m also in the minority when it comes to St. Anger. I love that album, too. Lol

While I discovered Metallica somewhere between 90-92 when I was 9-11 with Ride the Lightning, I had zero problems getting into the Load/Reload era.
When I finally had the internet I was shocked and surprised at the general consensus of Metallica fans regarding the Black Album and anything after.
      I enjoyed it all.
      Apparently not everyone else did.
The only Metallica album I don't like is Lulu.

    Load? It's a load allright...
No but honestly after some patience with it there are more good songs than just Kind Nothing like Until it Sleeps and Bleeding Me (that middle riff is killer) and a lot of riffs and basslines sound nice.
