I think it’s also due to the fact that nowadays we’re being bombarded with live services and monetized games. Back then with the PS3 we were used to get value for our money. A game was playable, from beginning to the end and there wasn’t so much temptation to start spending more money after buying a game. So yes, to me that was the real era of true gaming.
More or less, they charged up for monetization a lot in that era too especially the popular FIFA. The real truth is that it was less common and we weren't bombarded by remastereds/ports,loot boxes/battle passes, premium items and subscriptions to play online most of the games but still it was growing up during that era.For sure that was a better era for gaming than what we have now.
Agreed, also with the pandemic a lot a people lost their job and they cannot afford a ps4, + ps3 has really good graphics, the games are cheap, there is loads of them and is still a great multimedia device... I still have mine and will never sell it. ITS SUCH A GREAT CONSOLE....
My PS3 wasn't working 3 years ago and instead of getting it repaired I just shelved it and continued to play the 360, Switch and now the PS5. Never sold my PS3 games because they hold a special place in my heart. There are so many great titles on the console. I even own titles that you can't get on PS online or remastered releases. A few weeks ago I decided to fix the PS3 myself. Didn't know whether it the dust, the fan or the disc laser (which could need replacing). I ordered a console security screw driver that can open the console up. It was an absolute mess. 12 years of collected dust. Oh boy I have not been good to by son. I eventually cleaned it. Top to bottom with WD-40, a mini vac, wet wipes, and finished it off with an air duster spray. Put it back together again and tested it out with Infamous 2. It worked and I honestly almost cried. Not just because I can play my PS3 games again but because I did it all myself. I got 56 PS3 physical titles awaiting me and I couldn't be happier.
Thanks for sharing! It’s insane. Both my PS3’s from back then are working. Which is crazy considering they both malfunction during the time they were the main consoles in the market. To celebrate nostalgia, I bought the RE Chronicles collections recently. I’m so glad PS Fans pushed back and saved the PS3/Vita store.
I know this comment is a little old but please for the love of god never use wd-40 on a circuit board again lol.. get you some 91% or higher alcohol and a small spray bottle and q tips.
@@josetomascamposrobledano4618 i got one aswell not loong ago havent used ps3 sins 2014. it was in great condition. this year i cleaned it and put 500gb ssd in it. it runs so smoothly and silently. and collecting games its so fun so play on
I still remember securing it with the passenger seatbelt and putting a towel on it so no one would break into my car while I stopped for groceries. I felt like an absolute baller for getting a big 60GB model during launch week.
For real, I remember people stoping me at the store when leaving with one because they were shocked to see a PS3, they wanted one but it was too much money for most people at the time.
This has to be one of the most relaxing channels out there... no obnoxious intros or wacky hosts, just a dude talking about something we love. Any video of yours is all chill vibes, I wish more channels were like this. Thank you.
I loved the PS3 because it truly felt like an all-in-one home console. The XMB UI was phenomenal. You could rip music straight to the drive, store movies on it, and of course, playing the games and Blu Ray. Looking at the PS4 and PS5, aside from obvious technical advancements, they’re lacking in comparison.
oh come on, that UI was the WORST thing about the console. never used a worse, clunkier or slower operational system in my entire life. navigating the PSstore was an ordeal. it felt like playing sonic 06 with all the loadings
@@GraveUypo lol, you're just delusional. I agree about the PS Store having an endless loading time (but it's not like on ps4 is ultra fast... it's still an issue somehow), but leaving that aside, well, PS3's XMB imho was absolutely great. And you could play music, dvds, blu ray, load and save all kind of media from usb stick, play ps1 and (with some fat models) ps2 games. It was just perfect. The only thing which would have made it even better would have been putting a 160 or even 320 gb HDD into the fat versions that read ps2 games (and fixing the ylod issue before launch) OR just making the slim 160 and 320 gb versions able to read ps2 games, since they aren't usually affected by ylod. My first console was the ps2, I liked it but two / three things stop me from wanting to play it again: the memory cards instead of a build in hdd (but that's a minor flaw), the WIRED controllers (yeah I know there are wireless unofficial controllers, but they're shit and break easily + you have to put batteries inside them and it sucks) and finally those original Dualshock 2 controllers often had issues if you wrapped the wire around them and some buttons got struck quite easily after years of usage. And you can't imagine how much it bugged me...
@@tonycarlson9013 those two points you guys made are the main reasons why I’m sticking with PlayStation 3 that and let’s not forget native backwards compatibility!
It took Sony a while to get it down right though. I remember the first 3-4 years, Xbox live was a much smoother experience than PS3 online. I think this on top of the high launch price was what gave Xbox the early advantage. But by the time the first slim PS3 came around, Sony had everything dialed in.
That is why I bought a Gaming laptop and not a ps5 never mind ps5 is never in stock and a 400$ AMD RYZEN 3 gaming PC is on shelf at walmart it also has more power and can do more practical work and gaming it can also make calls. You got all the free online games like gta5.
Indeed we live in such a weird time now paying to play online, PC is free it's probably one of the main reasons I jumped ship after the PS3, that and Higher frame rates.
@@bradleybrewer9576 really? What kind of wizardry you got under that Walmart $400 PC to not just on par with PS5 but more power than a PC with RTX2070?
@@bradleybrewer9576 my question was what kind of GPU you got in that $400 PC to claim that yours is more “powerful” than a current Gen Console? You can whine about what a window platform can do whole day but at the end of the day you’ll have to spend another $400-$600 just to experience the $399 PS5 graphics and frame rate. 😉 I bet a Series S can out run that shitty Walmart $400 PC.
The console that made me understand the expression "Play Station": a place where I could play anything, from classic PS1 games and indies to the newest AAA titles, be it physical or digital media. Definitely my favorite Sony console.
@@Unpopular_Duality. Paying to play online is such a BS charge in my opinion. The fact Sony took the Xbox route cause they saw "free money" made me so upset with them after I heard PS4 was making you pay to play online. I mean fuck thats why I picked the PS over the Xbox in the first place. Now they just gutted the whole thing. Just disappointing.
Same here. Sony dropped the ball for not continuing their tradition with native backwards compatibility. Now that I’m older with a family, career, and productive hobbies, I’ve became a casual gamer. The only game I’m interested in for this generation is GTA 6 which is not out yet. I’ll end up just using my powerful workstation rig and play it on their once released.
I'm 34, born in 87 and I can safely say the PS1-PS2 era is by far my favourite. These were the consoles I played on during my senior school years. PS3 came out around the time I got my first job, so I still have fond memories of it but the gulf between PS1-PS2 and other consoles in terms of fond memories and the game catalogue is pretty massive for me.
Same. The ps1 and ps2 startup sound still hits me hard. Memories of eating Godfather's Pizza with friends while playing Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, Dynasty Warriors, and GTA 3 all night come flooding back.
Same. I got into PlayStation because my grandpa had a PlayStation. It was so advanced for its time, compared to N64 or anything else I’ve ever experienced. Then I bought a PS2 using my own money from mowing the lawns around my neighborhood during the summer of 02’. Which prompted my grandpa to purchase his own PS2. Fast forward to PS3. It felt like I purchased a Mercedes when I picked up my PS3. While I did have some very fond memories on PS3; mostly multi player (online) games such as TTT2, SF4, Injustice, MK11, Killzone 2, Bad Company 2, Blk Ops 2 (zombies), COD4 Modern Warefare, BF3, GTA 5, Borderlands, Destiny, and LBP. It still pales in comparison to the single player / two player games that I played on PS1 & PS2; it had charm and a quirky yet, artistic arcade feel to it. The PS3 & the 7th Gen era was the commercialization stage of the gaming industry. It was no longer about an expression of art. It was all about the money, and how much of it can they milk out of you through DLC, micro transactions and endless sequels of the same game instead of creating new and original/unique IP’s. All of which made me check out in the 8th Gen and I highly doubt I’ll be entering the 9th Gen of gaming. Now, I literally only use my ps4 (which was given to me by my cousin who joined the military in late 2018) to play Tekken. And even then, I only play it once or twice a week, if that. Plus, the fighting game community such as Tekken is much larger on PC. So, eventually I won’t even have a console anymore. Anyways. Bring back the 90’s arcade vibe of the 6th Gen and perhaps more ppl will come back to gaming. Rant over.
I genuinely think that the PS3 should've gotten the love the PS5 gets and the PS5 should get the criticism the PS3 got as the PS5 is just a PS4 but faster whereas the PS3 was revolutionary! Oh and btw... I do own a PlayStation 5. In fact every PlayStation for those dumb comments.
One of the main reasons PS3 was criticised though from the get go was that it was very expensive and there wasn't many high quality exclusive games in it's first year - the PS5 is superior in terms of having a better price point, some quality exclusives in Demon's Souls, Spiderman and Ratchet & Clank just 6 months out of the gate, and the PS5 also has some awesome controller innovations - Sony went back on the PS3 boomerang and quickly retooled basically a PS2 controller to have motion control, and at launch they had a lawsuit about rumble function in controllers, so the controller didn't even have that. Shortly after launch you started hearing about the difficulties of developing for the PS3 as well. A lot of cross console games were launching first or better on 360, and Sony lost a lot of their third party exclusives they had the previous generation such as Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto. PS3 easily stumbled out of the gate the most of any of the PlayStation consoles.
I've owned every generation of Playstation consoles, but PS3 is still my least favorite. Granted, I didn't own one until very late, but I still think it lacks the amount of interesting titles that the other consoles had and its controller is my least favorite. It does get more flack than it deserves, though.
I can't say I fully agree. The PS5 is in my opinion equally revolutionary, it's just in a weird cross-gen period it can't really seem to get out of due to the shortages and covid.
@@BerserkHaris every PlayStation generation has been pretty much the same leap in generation. Look at crash bandicoot compared to jak and daxter compared to uncharted compared to last of us 2 and compared to ratchet and clank (obviously not naughty dog but the most next gen game) all have similar leaps in fidelity
The PS3 is the only gaming system i can think of which people actually began to love after its time. Not based on nostalgia or anything of that kind, but simply because gamers now appreciate the variety of games it has which they were either previously oblivious or ignorant of.
I lived through it. There was a serious hate boner from the start because of "599 US DOLLARS". If it was $400 I guarantee 90% of the hate it got would've vanished. It was a bandwagon hate that took the world by storm. It was like a meme of it's time, every one had to loudly shout from the rooftops how much they hated Sony or call them "arrogant". All because of $599. I bought it at launch and loved it! Resistance, Warhawk, Motorstorm, Ratchet and Clank and Uncharted were amazing first year games. I was in high school and people would vomit on your face when you said you had a PS3 instead of Xbox 360 in 2007. Every gaming site articles and comments trashed the PS3 for years. Not until the 2009 $299 price drop and the Kevin Butler commercials did it even become socially acceptable to admit in public that you liked the PS3. Me and the few people I know who actually owned one in the first year loved the system from the start. It was also cheaper than 20gb 360 + $100 wifi add-on + $250 XBL fees for 5 years + $200 HD-DVD add-on (streaming TV/movies didn't exist back then) if you wanted HD movies for your sexy new HDTV you had to buy a disc player. In conclusion, people who weren't haters knew the PS3 and it's library ruled from the start and Xbox 360 was an amazing system as well.
@@user-73ablue Ray players were $1000 at the time, plus launch ps3s had backwards compat..so still had great value..granted i didnt get one till 2009
I don't think so. The positive PS3 nostalgia probably hinges quite a bit on the negative of PS4, it not being backwards compatible. PS5 is, and if PS6 is to be too, then people will just forget about them both. That is the machines of course, the games may be better of. Even if not so much in the nostalgic sense, because most could simply play their old PS4 games on PS6. Hopefully. Or maybe things will get "exciting" and "exotic" again.. ;)
@@daydream605 The day the original Xbox emulators get perfected will be one of the best days of my life. I'll finally be able to show my friends the games I grew up with as a child and be able to play together with them.
I still love playing my ps3, one of the best things for me compared to modern games. The game was FINISHED when you bought it, if it needed a patch, they were usually about 100mb if needed. And DLC was additional content, not content locked away as part of the main game! I made some great friends abroad playing PS3 who I still play with today. 😁
@@excitedaboutlearning1639 I mean the ps3 gen was when this really became the norm. I do not think it has gotten worse since the end of that gen, more just continued on as more of the same.
PS3 was amazing because of free online. Not to mention the library, games that literally changed my whole gaming taste like Demon's Souls, games I played for thousands of hours like Battlefield 3 and games with local/online coop that I played a ton with people irl and online (like Resident Evil 5)
I’ve never really stopped to think about it but I would have to say that the PS3 is my all time favorite console. I was in my mid 20s with just the right mix of free time and expendable income. It was me and my eventual wife’s media player and a so many great memories are tied to it.
The PS3 (especially the fat one) felt incredibly premium for me, something I never felt while using any console. The PS5 gives me the same feeling though, theres something premium to it, something the ps4 never had.
Despite all the advancements of the newest consoles, they just will never give me the same memories and experiences I had with the PS3. Those times marked some of the happiest moments of my life, the games were so unique and blew me away. I won’t ever get that sensation again. Now I feel gaming is getting too safe and predictable in many ways, that feeling of amusement and joy is a once in a lifetime thing that we won’t ever get back again. But won’t ever be forgotten.
A lot of it is just us getting older..I was born in 93 started on NES,Sega Genesis,SNES,N64,ps1 then an Xbox and ps2 and eventually multiple 360s and 1 XB 1…The golden days for me was 2005 and older…GTA San Andreas and Vice city were a huge part of my growing up and honestly since I bought Skyrim back in like 2016 I haven’t really been excited about a game..GTA 6 and ES 6 are the only games I can really say I’m “excited about” but then 2 years after those come out I’ll be waiting until I’m 40 for the next installments lol
I think is the "child in heart" (fallout 3 perk reference without any meaning here), the saving kids from the harsh would / making them enjoy certain things more and makes time go by slowly. The feeling of OWNING the copy of a game in physically is something I miss. 360 cases got cheaper late 360 gen and PS3 cases stayed. I had an xbox and was a blast but tbh I should have taken the ps3. Only reason was I own a PSP before that till even today.
I HATE BUYING DIGITAL GAMES they can take away my favorite games whenever they want and i cant even share them with my friends nor can they share theirs with me
Yes you can share games digitally, Ive done so before on the ps5. As for them taking your games at any time just copy and burn it onto a blank disc just in case that happens which isnt illegal because you own the licence and your not selling it to anyone.
Quick story...My best friend ended up getting a PS3 very early on after its release. He was pretty well off because his parents made good money. He was also the first person I knew to have a flat screen tv, which I believe at that time a 32 inch tv was around a $1000, so pretty expensive for the mid-2000s. We were both 22 at the time of the PS3's release so of course we had to get one. Anyways, I remember seeing it for the first time and was blown away. The clarity and quality of the picture was outstanding, the graphics were out of this world, and it played blu rays. Unfortunately, I had to wait until my birthday in August the next year to gather up enough money to get my own. At last, it happened, my very own PS3 (which I still own to this day). I still remember getting it out of the box and setting it up. The funniest part though, I tried to plug it into my old box tv. I plugged it in and couldnt figure out why the quality was so bad. I noticed this cord, which was called an HDMI, and I had no idea what it was or how you use it. I had to call my friend. Once he told me what an HDMI was, I had to convince my dad that I needed to get a flat screen tv in order to play my PS3. Anyways....It's funny how technology can help bring back all those amazing memories like the first time seeing and playing a PS3, and afterwards purchasing a PS3 and my first flat screen tv (which was a 26 inch btw). If anyone who reads this comment has a PS3 story, comment below, would love to read it!! Thanks for the video!!
I got my PS3 quite late in the day - a blue Super-Slim on December 17 2014, (I'd been Nintendo for over two decades; also have an MSX from the 1980s). What blew me away were the demos. El Shaddai was one of my favourites, but Ragnarok Odyssey Ace, Realms of Ancient War, and of course, Diablo III were all very memorable as well. My first PS3 game was the unforgettable 3D Dot Game Heroes. I also managed to play various PS1 titles I'd purchased earlier for emulators, (such as Armored Core and Magic Carpet), and finally got round to some PS2 classics - notably Disgaea and SMT Nocturne.
Im 20 yo I still remember this. For Christmas 2014 or 2015? Anyway my older brother gifted me his old PlayStation 3 because he had a PS4 and he didn’t want his PlayStation 3 anymore so he gave it to me as a Christmas present! I could not be any more happier. Sure, I received the PlayStation 3 Way late into its life 2015 I know. But still! And then on the PS3 will always be my favorite Consol I don’t care what nobody says! PS4 has nothing on PlayStation three.
Got a PS3 but sold it to get a PS4 after a month of usage when the PS4 came out. Sold the PS4 and remembered wanting yo try out a couple games I could only play on the PS3. I got a RED Super Slim last year w/500gb and have been collecting games for about a year now. I’ve played through most Ratchet & Clank, AVATAR the movie one., SOCOM 4, just to name a few favorites. And I feel like a kid again everytime I connect it! I would recommend everybody to get the mClassic! It makes even my Xbox Series S look better! Just adds a bit of clarity, crispness, and upscales 720p to 1080p 60fps! I’m currently playing through God of War collection! If feels like I’m living @ another time when I play these older titles! Love it 🖤
(Re written comment because the original bugged out for some reason) WARNING, LONG STORY COMMENT. Firstly, what made me buy the PS3 in the first place. I remember watching the E3 live demo video for LittleBigPlanet (through a link on Weebles Stuff, didn't really know what YT was back then). When one of then grabbed onto the gear and it started turning, I knew I needed this game. I was 13 at the time and had about £100 saved up, no where near enough. I went to a local Scout group fundraiser, which had one of those horse race DVDs and people bet on them to win tokens. The money to buy tickets for the event went to the scout group and there was also a cash prize. Somehow I managed to pick the winners in the last two races and get the most tickets overall. The funny thing was is that my dad was a scout leader, and also worked in IT, so he set up the projector he borrowed from work and dealt with the technical side of things. In hindsight it looks a bit dodgy that I won lol but I literally had never seen this DVD before in my life, it had come from a different leader. That got me another £200 which was enough for the console. IIRC the cheapest PS3 at the time was like £240 for the 20GB model and £320 for the 80GB model (yup 80GB was the largest HD lol) or something like that. I distinctly remember when we took the cash out the ATM and walked across the walkway to the GAME opposite in Meadowhall I said to my dad "This is the most money I've ever held" (I've held much more since but 13 yo me thought that was crazy). I had the choice of three PS3 game bundles: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles (maybe there were other I can't remember). I picked the R&C title originally, but there was a known bug where it wouldn't work at first and you had to leave it overnight or something. I ended up trading it in anyway when we were at the shop the next day due to it not working, and got Oblivion instead. I actually timed getting the PS3 with the original release date of LittleBigPlanet, but it ended up being delayed a few days so I played Oblivion for a bit (no idea what I was doing). I distinctly remember fireworks going off around us as we drove home with LBP since it released on Bonfire night in the UK (5th November 2008), that was super neat. I got the spacesuit costume which could only be downloaded during the first week (or maybe it was re-released later I'm not sure) and remember the rocket car level that had like 100,000 plays (I think it got over a million plays eventually or something). I downloaded the R&C Tools of Destruction demo soon after and my goodness I played that every day after school for a month after; so much nostalgia for the first Metropolis level and it's music. The early days of PS3 were magical. I have so many fond memories of late gaming with my friends in the school holidays, mostly LBP, MAG and later Borderlands. Such a shame that the online for both MAG (back in 2014 the servers shut down, which literally makes the game unplayable since it was 100% online) and the LBP games are dead. LBP online was essentially killed in September last year by a hacker, which has destroyed the whole point of that amazing iconic Playstation3 series, to create and share. It makes me so sad because I literally bought a PS3 for those games and I recently have got back into PS3. Initially I went back through the R&C series (currently platting it) and wanted to do the same for LBP but it will never happen now sadly (although LBP3 is still online on PS4, which I don't have). I still have my original fat 80GB PS3 although that started being very tempermental and got the YLOD. It turns out it can be repaired generally by replacing some tantalum capacitors which lose capacitance over time. I didn't want to risk bricking my PS3 however so I managed to get a second hand 500GB slim for £45 on ebay, and copied my HD data over to the new one after eventually getting my old PS3 to turn on; will repair it some time in future. But I'm literally still using my original controllers and even micro USB leads and it all just works. I only had a modest PS3 collection, about 15 games but a few I played the heck out of (LBP and MAG mostly). I bought the R&C physical games last year so I had the whole PS3 collection (including the digital remastered deadlocked) and did an R&C marathon. Now I'm looking at the other remastered classic platformers which I haven't played yet but are always grouped together as classic Playstation platformers: Sly Cooper Collection and Jak and Daxter Collection. It's stange but I'm buying more PS3 games now than I did for years previously.
“The earliest of Gen Z probably had their first gaming experience on PS3 and 360.” I’d say that applies to the latter of Gen Z. As someone who’s early Gen Z and knows a lot of people from the same 1-3 year age range, I grew up on GameCube first and plenty of people I know were on PS2 and Xbox, with 360 and PS3 being in later childhood and early teens.
Same, started with ps2 and ratchet and clank for a few reasons. 1, my older brother had a ps2 so ended up playing that with him. And 2. The PS3 was mad expensive so I didn’t even get one until 2009, at that point I had been playing games for 5 years, after starting in 2004.

I'm early Gen Z in 99, I remember playing on the Sega as it was my first system then jumping to PS2 for years until I got a PS3 as a older child young teen.
My first console experience was a Dendy( A Nintendo Entertainment System clone sold in russia) then I jumped to PS2 straight to Ratchet and clank 2. Skipped PS3 for PC gaming then when GOW 2018 released I got my self PS4 PRO with it. Later I bought a PS3 Super Slim for all the titles I missed. Today replaying ratchet and clank games, some are first playthrough on ps3. I also got a PS5.
My kids grew up with the ps3 being their main console. Due to them usually being on it, I never played it much. Now they’re grown and the ps3 is all mine. I’ve been going back and playing all the games I can find and I’m constantly amazed of how good it actually was for the time.
Resistance fall of men to this day is one of the best shooters that should be remade I was in my mid twenties when I got a PS3 but it's definitely a gem of a consolec

I just wish someone would start producing quiet fans for it. I have the original fat model and even with new thermal paste it's a bit louder than I'd like unless it's idling. It never reaches the jet turbine volume unless I have an exhaust blocked, but the middle speeds are much louder than my pc or anything else.
When I think about how PS3 is to PS5 what the PS1 was to PS3, it makes me feel old as hell. PS3 is now 'retro' yet to my mind it still feels like a 'modern' gaming system. But that's probably because I still use it all the time, more than my PS4 and PS5 in fact
I wouldn't call PS3 retro just quite yet. An argument can certainly be made, but I don't know if we've advanced enough technologically for 7th gen to be considered retro yet.
How old is a retro console? Simplest: If it's over 10 years old, it's retro. If it has an official successor, it's retro even if the successor is new. When using nothing more than time and math, the 360 and PS3 have to be considered retro consoles by the end of this year. However, in the grand scheme of things, perhaps 15 years just doesn't feel as long as it used to, and we'll have to wait a while for mini versions of the seventh generation of console.
@@gustavojoserodriguez7475 That's why I said it's up for debate. But personally, I go more by technology than number of years and the 7th gen consoles don't really feel all that outdated to me. I don't know, maybe it's because each of the last two gens lasted much longer than previous generations. Hard to say.
PS3 had the best games. Games actually tried to be different and unique. Games today are just redos of what’s been done before only the old games were better. There’s also not as much diversity in games today. PS3 actually had good racing games as well. Some of the best games were on PS3. The ufc game was also better on PS3.
PS3 was the era of chasing after the open world, shooter and gritty action trends. Everything tried to be GTA, Halo, CoD, Gears, Uncharted. Every melee action games suddenly had QTEs and tried to be God of War. Franchises like Fallout, X-COM, Syndicate became FPS. Devs of cartoonish games hard pivoted or gritty realism or sterile scifi. Even games like SSX pivoted towards gritty realism. Experimental mid-tier devs struggled to compete, and smaller experiments and one-offs from big publishers like Capcom started going away. It really wasn't that rosy. And there's tons of experimentation going on in the indie sphere today.
I still hold out hope one day I’ll be able to pop a PS3 disc inside a more modern PlayStation system and be able to play them preferably at a locked frame rate 🤞
Resistance franchise was unforgettable in PS3, so as Playstation Home and Playstation all-stars. But that one game I'll miss the most is infamous 1 and 2.
@@shahtayyib Hey man, better late than never. Plus it's SP, so it's pretty much preserved for life. I'd have to say it's one of my favorites, especially as far as PS3 games, so I'm glad you're getting to play and enjoy it 😁
@@MASJYT You're not wrong. inFAMOUS is a great game still, but it's not balanced very well. There's some pretty steep difficulty spikes such as when you reach the First Sons, and it can definitely be pretty rough looking. I always loved and hated getting power on to a powered down part of the city because it meant I'd be getting a new power to play with, but it also meant navigating a very difficult area with a ton of enemies where you can die really quickly. inFAMOUS 2 is a superior game in almost every single regard. This is how you do a friggin sequel and absolutely kill it.
I appreciated the willingness to experiment. For example, mirror's edge wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but they were willing to try something different. I. E. Another first person shooter. Or indi sidescroller. Plus demos. What happened to demos?
They more or less died with gaming magazines. I remember buying tons of gaming mags back in the day just to get the demo discs that usually came with them. Hell I even bought a few magazines in languages I didn't even speak, just to get the discs.
I miss demos. The ps4 might be the last one with demos, or at least much. I had a good amount of ps4 demos but ps4 demos DO NOT work on ps5 and ps5 itself has no ps5 demos….that I’m aware of. I like going into the Japanese psn store. They seem to have a good amount of demos still,
I've got two working PS3s and a PS4. I'm in no rush to buy a PS5. Heck, there's so many PS3 games I haven't played. I just bought 10 games out of which I haven't completed 8, so I've got plenty of games to play before moving on to PS5. PS3 is king.

I was a member of the ‘insurance’ scheme that replaced PS3’s if they broke down. So my launch day 60gb Phat PS3 broke and Sony replaced it with a brand new one but I was impatient so went out and bought a slim. @@2pacaveli257 Yes, that was beautiful even on the PS3. But even better on PS4 Pro or PS5. MGS 3 Snake Eater. (My brain is processing if they did do this already....) 🤔
I had such an unhealthy addiction to Warhawk. I was in my early 30s when the ps3 dropped. I'm pushing 50 now and just bought a replacement for my dead ps3 and now I'm making a dent in my backlog. Started with Bionic Commando 2 about a week ago. Man I miss warhawk tho
You can still play it. PSone revived the servers. I probably shouldn't have told you about it, because now, you've got a way out of completing your backlog. In my case, it's MW3. It's damn addictive! I haven't been this addicted to a game since 2018 and 2019 when I played Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for months non-stop. I've got a huge backlog too. I just bought 10 PS3 games, not to mention my PS4 and PS Vita backlogs. Damn!
@@excitedaboutlearning1639 I knew about the servers being revived by third party but I think you have to start from scratch which sux. I'd be wiing to bet that MW3 still has a dedicated player base. I still play Battlefield Bad Company 2 online and that came out in 2008
@@atodamadre3197 You're right. There's almost a thousand players who play it on a daily basis. Fortunately, most of the time, you won't run into hackers, but there are hackers. The first time I ran into one, he made me prestige level 10 and completely messed up my statistics. I wasn't happy about that, but there's nothing I can do about it. MW2 is full of hacked lobbies, so it's almost impossible to play it without running into hackers during a session. The worst part is that they make a team deathmatch into a search and destroy match and force everyone into that lobby and they don't even let the game spawn a bomb. You can't join any other lobby, because they force the server to only look for their lobby.
I still have my PS3 from 2008, works completely fine without issue as well as my original 40-50 games. I love to game but honestly just had a lot going on in life....I bet my PS3 only has a few hundred hours of gameplay at most. I still fire it up a few times a year.
Right around 2009 I got Fallout 3 GOTY edition and a PS3. My kids were JUST getting to a place where they could entertain themselves without me looking over them and I got to put in about 150 hours on the thing. Recently played some Infamous on a 55" 1080p LED and, still a good experience. A great system.
The jump from the previous generation to PS3 generation in terms of visuals/graphics was probably the biggest leap especially when you factor in it was the first Hdmi and proper HD gaming gen. I've never been more blown away than when I first started gaming on a 7th gen. Also the size and scope of games became much bigger than previous (gta 4 and 5 etc)
PS3 was the first console I would actually look ahead to what’s being released and watch E3 and things like that, before that (PS1/2) I would just buy what I could see in the store shelves.
I'd also add that certainly in the UK, for the first few years of the PS3 being available it was the cheapest Blu-ray player you could buy. This was one of the things which made it appealing to many, despite the initial lack of decent games. I don't know whether this was also the case in mainland Europe or the US.
Just picked me up a PS3 and I am loving it…so many games to discover and play..safe to say I will not need a new system for years to come…the PS3 is a modern retro console at this point..many of the games still look and play great!
Remember when psn was free and you didn't have to pay 60 dollars to have access to your own internet connection, I owned both a 360 and a ps3 during the 7th gen but most of my memories are with the ps3 simply for free online play alone
I was gifted a PS3 last year by a coworker who didn't need it anymore, along with a Wii. I finally got around to playing games I've been dying to play since my early teens like R&C: Tools of Destruction and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. I wish it were an original fat PS3 instead of a Slim, but I'm glad I have one that's guaranteed to last me far longer than the launch model so I can enjoy it for all it's worth.
I've hooked up and played on my PS3 for the first time in ages lately thanks to mods for Gran Turismo 5 and 6 being created. Mods which are still in development as I type this.
@@just-fun-stuff6753 Sony was actually impressed MS pulled of 360 back compat. with the XBONE. It's crazy to think the Cell and the Xenon are both pretty much the same chip but Sony couldn't pull it off bc of how complex the hardware was. (The Xenon is a tri-core Cell without the SPE's. PS3 has 2xPPE's with 7 usable SPE's.)
The PS3 became the best console in 2020 because of the increasingly greedy gaming industry and the rise of PC components. I am buying one in 2021 and will keep it for at least 10 years.

I don't see any reason why they cant make a perfect 4th model 'Ultra Slim' that can be like a classic mini done right with disc support and possibly even ps1 ps2 compatible. Just look at how far the design was shrunk and made efficient in its lifespan and image what they could do now

For me, its the Cell microprocessor that makes the PS3 my most interesting console, even by today's standard I believe its the last gaming console to ever use specialized hardware.
The PS3 hardware was certainly "unique" for game console. Sadly, this made it more difficult to program for, but those who knew how to take advantage of the resources usually went on to sell some outstanding titles.
360 has better graphics, and its faster , not debatable, its a simple fact, I have both consoles, the Last of us is not that good of a game neither is GTurismo, quantic dream games are good ratchet, and hd colections are nice, all the rest multi platform titles are better on 360 .
@@badtuber1654 you see that is where you are wrong. I own both and just because cross platform titles run worse doesn't mean it is weaker. Console hardware understanding was the issue, The Last of Us could not run close to the same on an Xbox 360, that game is a technical marvel
The only thing I think the ps3 had over the 360 was free online. Outside of that, it was a step down from the 360. Games tended to look and run worse, no party chat, no quick-looking for pop ups like messages/trophies, etc.
Same, my Playstation 3 still works like a charm ! and I have at least a dozen games I haven't even played yet they're so cheap it's tough to upgrade to ps4 or 5 . Until It Breaks I'm riding this wave

Demon's Souls created an entire genre with so many series out now (Nioh, Dark Souls, Mortal Shell, etc.) Probably one of the best contributions from the PS3.
It always drives me nuts when people seemingly forget that this game is what started it all. The remake has helped to introduce the truth to some, but it deserves way more attention and credit for how good it actually is.

A very fun game which reminds me some Jak X gameplay features and you could customise your cars, play online and all these stuff you can do with a good racing game. If you have a PS3, you should give it a try!
I dont have much time for gaming, but during the pandemic I played through The Last Of Us on PS3, and, being a PC gamer primarily. I was genuinely impressed by the graphics. Another point with the PS3 is the interface. Unlike the Xbox360 which I hear became very laggy with all the redesigns, the PS3 has had the same interface from day 1 and it just works. And it feels like there is a million settings to play around with. PS3 is basically a big multimedia hub that received all the streaming apps PLUS all the local offline media options. Its a great system to own even in 2021 as online is FREE and still working. PS3 games are dirt cheap to buy from a game store etc.
There was an era of PS2/PS3 with absolute bang for your buck legendary games that had so much value and endless content to offer. Now we have F2P mobile gaming garbage that milks every penny at every point from you and screws you if you try to be F2P.

PS3 generation was a okay gen overall but it was the start of the downfall of the PS brand. Micro-transactions started in the PS3 era with games like Home and all the shady DLCs that we are still plague with today. Of course things got even worse with PS4 as that console only has three good exclusive games.
Dragged my old PS3 out of retirement, plugged in a 1tb Samsung SSD, installed CFW and began downloading games and DLC to preserve as many PS1, PS2 and PS3 games possible. I’ve been having so much fun playing games again.
In case anyone is interested in a different point of view: I love the PS3 for a strange reason. I never had it. It's the same reason I love the Wii, I always envied the generation and all the games that came along with it. And watching countless of videos of those game truly brings back wonderful memories. Those consoles were like spaceships to me.
I remember when I was younger saying “I hope everyone a day will abandon the newest consoles and get back to good old PS3 and XBOX 360”... Guess my dream's becoming truth...
Sounds like you’re not too high up on current gen like I am. PS3-360 era is probably my favorite and I’m gaming solely on my PS3 for the last few weeks and I’m loving it!
Man I have so many great memories with the fat PS3 back when I was in middle school man. I will forever cherish those memories for sure. Even bought a PS3 Slim in 2019.
Grew up playing on my ps2 when I was really young but most my childhood was me and my PS3. So many amazing games, features, friends/community's, and memories. I'll always love ps3 and I'll always keep mine. I've had it for 9 years and it's still going strong. I love my ps4 and use that way more now but the ps3 will always be special. 💙
PlayStation 3 is definitely one my favorites. My best online gaming memories are on it. From Grand Theft Auto 4, 5, Red Dead Redemption, PlayStation Home, I had a good time. I met some cool people on it too which I'm still online friends with to this day.
Here in the U.K. that was definitely the word, especially with the reduced price of the slim model. Blu-Ray was slowly growing after such a slow start and the message was the PS3 was the best AND cheaper than a good dedicated player. Oh, and you got a PlayStation games console too for no additional cost.
Definitely my favorite console - 26 hours in line to buy my PS3 at launch (I was the only 50 year old in line). Currently on my 3rd PS3 a nice red one I bought on ebay from Japan - goes well with my Days of Play blue PS4 - Maybe a PS5 for my 65th birthday in July 2022... :)
Great speech. I was born in 96 and I've played psx when I was a child. Then like u said, x360 but I wanted ps3 too and finally after years I got it too. Met friends I still know them now! A week ago I bought ps3 fat with many games and dualshock 3, all in like-new condition for cheap. I love this console. I miss the years where there were soooo many people playing on x360 and ps3 to meet so many people from my country
I appreciate the PS3 because at launch it felt like a celebration of PlayStation. Fully backwards compatible, support of the newest & most successful HD media format, plus all kinds of power user options like Linux, bitrate details for blu-ray playback, & access to media servers. The only place this console stumbled is that launch lineup, other than that it’s probably my favorite pieces of console hardware.
Was the best generation for online gaming, where everyone put on a headset and no cross game party chat so everyone was talking and joking with each other in lobbies and it was a great way to make friends, unfortunately it’s not like that anymore, so not near as fun playing games online - I’m so glad I played online during that time
I'm glad I played online during this console generation too. CoD lobby's were funny and awesome and CoD was amazing or good for the most part. But I'm not gonna act like the features the PS4 added at launch and overtime doesn't make it objectively better though and easier, but I still liked the online and the community more in those days. It was simpler times when parties weren't a thing.
The features of the PS3 were amazing (especially the original which had both PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility). Sooo many diverse PlayStation exclusives (action/adventure games, FPS games, racing games, Japanese games, the debut of LBP, HD remasters of PS2 games). Free online play! Not to mention PlayStation Home! I hope the PS3 gets remembered as the legendary console that it was - and perhaps still is to this day.
As of recording of this video you can still very much use Netflix on it which is something that was just discontinued on the Wii U and 3DS platforms that came out much later than the PlayStation 3.
It's probably my favorite console of all time. I just got my first HDTV in 2008 and took a gamble on ps3 over 360 because of blu-ray. Loved it. So many great Sony studios games and it was an htpc for me pre streaming era
The real truth is that it was less common and we weren't bombarded by remastereds/ports,loot boxes/battle passes, premium items and subscriptions to play online most of the games but still it was growing up during that era.For sure that was a better era for gaming than what we have now.
never mind Gta5 , Call of duty advanced warfair , or black ops 3 bad monetization.
Also a very good point, yes!
It was only near the end of its life cycle that we started seeing dlc for every godamn thing and early versions of what is now live service.
Agreed, also with the pandemic a lot a people lost their job and they cannot afford a ps4,
+ ps3 has really good graphics, the games are cheap, there is loads of them and is still a great multimedia device...

Same here 🙋♂️
Rant over.
Same here. Hey remember neo geo poket 😅
Same age as you. Except I was a Nintendo guy mostly in the 90s then got an Xbox and PS2 in the 2ks.

I'd say that would be inline with the reception of the gamecube and wii u, like the ps3 theyre just getting better over time
I'd say at least the GameCube is up there with it. It was considered a financial failure for Nintendo.

Hopefully. Or maybe things will get "exciting" and "exotic" again.. ;)

My PS3 was gifted to me by my brother as he got in as a bundle with a free PSP which he also gifted to me.

Ps3 isnt retro. Everything 6th gen or under is retro.

The PS3 was SO AWESOME! Xbox 360 was more popular where I was, but man, that backward compatible PS3 was so awesome. Even though I began playing in the 80s and 90s, so I'm a classic gamer, the abnormally long 7th generation with PS3 and Xbox 360 makes it MY FAVOURITE generation ever.

the reason I bought my ps3...
@@excitedaboutlearning1639 wow that sux. Hackers ruin it for everyone but themselves

I was gifted a PS3 last year by a coworker who didn't need it anymore, along with a Wii.
I wish Sony would at least try to give us some sort of PS2 and PS3 backwards compatibily on PS5.. There are so many great games on those systems.
PS2 probably will happen, PS3 i dont think because of its strange cpu architecture. Xbox managed it to play all Generations on the Series X.

It’s because Sony was focused on making “the ultimate PlayStation” instead of the business models to impress the fanboys. I miss this energy

For me, its the Cell microprocessor that makes the PS3 my most interesting console, even by today's standard
I believe its the last gaming console to ever use specialized hardware.
Unless 3DS counts, it is lol
The problem of the 360 was the DVD drive. There was not enough space. So textures and Videos must shrink.
