Here I will demonstrate how I went about setting the timing between the crank, cam and balance shafts. Any part of this procedure that is done incorrectly can ruin your engine! I promise that if you follow my method, you will have nothing to fear.
There are many ways to "skin the cat" and these are the methods that I use. Any criticisms or alternate methods posted in the comments are welcome, just keep it civil.

This guy is amazing everything is the same on f22a1 and I have been completely unable to find a full tutorial on how to time it I bought it out of time and have been stuck for sooooo long trying to build the confidence to attack it. All the other videos leave a little to the imagination. But you going into such specific detail made it possible. THANK YOU!!!
Wow. Thanks! Hope you get it right. I have another set of videos showing that procedure on an engine stand that is a lot easier to see. Let us know how it turns out.
Thank you for showing the back balancing shaft. NO ONE shows it. They just say oh it's good and don't even talk about it
I try to show it all. Even if I'm bent into a pretzel! Glad it was helpful.
@@ktecgarage I'm right in the middle of this and someone said to put something in the back until it's in as far as it goes. Then take off the balancer and line up the marks. The bolt it back on. I don't understand how that would work. That's not right is it? I can't get them all to line up at the same time
ua-cam.com/video/oBIH5qhjCOw/v-deo.html
Watch that video. If you put a screwdriver in that port, it will lock up that rear shaft at the top dead center position. This video makes it much easier to see what you are trying to do.
I've been a transmission R&R tech for over 20 years and have done Honda timing belts, never did a 2.3, so imagine when I seen balance shafts ..great video, great camera shots. You have a new subscriber!
Thank you! It's great to hear I impressed a pro.
I just now finished my second Honda timing belt ever. I needed this detailed info before I ever started! Thanks for posting.
Thank you! I'm glad the info was helpful.
Just a tip, the cam gear has the lines on the rear of it too, and they should line up with the top deck of the head.
Thank you, but we already knew this.
per the current video.
Thanks for an excellent video. I wasn't sure about the rear balance shaft. This video answered my question. Thanks for spending the extra time to explain the 3:1 ratio, etc. I've always owned American made vehicles, and none of them used balance shafts; so this was my first experience with them. Thanks again for such a thorough video.
Thank you so much for your kind words. The whole point of these videos is to help guys like you. Glad to hear the video was helpful.
Best timing video ever!! Great sound, lighting, video angles and editing.
Thank you! I'm glad you found the video to be helpful.
Thanks against for the info your put in ,is a big help to other mech tech who's don't have clear instructions on the particular info, very good video.
Thank you for taking a moment to let me know my timing videos were helpful!
Straight killing it with these videos! Clear narratives, and great instruction!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! I really appreciate the support.

Amazing job and explanation. Thank you
And thank you! I'm glad you found the info helpful.
Setting timing worked great followed step by step thank you!!!

Great Video! Very thorough.
Love the detail. Thank you so much. Great work.
Thank you!
@@ktecgarage You are very welcome.
Hey Ktec Great Video! Been watching some of ur videos bc I'm doing a Water Pump and Timing Belt job on a 99 Accord EX 2.3L VTec and I love your work!! My Accord was leaking Antifreeze coolant pretty bad from the Water Pump, so I got a Timing Belt and Water Pump and started turning wrenches! Once I got the Timing Cover off I noticed there was a chewed up, old looking belt that was mangled up in there! It wasn't the Timing Belt and the Accord WAS DEFINITELY WORKING B4 I started working on it, I moved it in2 position and turned it off with the key! Looked it up and found out it's the Balance Shaft Belt! It was sooo chewed up and looks like it's been in there forever, surprised it didn't jump timing! Long story short I don't know how to line up the Balance Shaft now!!! I'm seeing a LOT of conflicting information on how to line up the marks and what's what! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
I have another video setting the timing on this with the engine out in the rebuild playlist. If you have a screwdriver locking up that back shaft and set the mark on the gear for the front one at 9 o'clock, your good to go. All assuming you have the crank gear at top dead center. TBH, if you just want to leave that belt off, you won't even notice since you've been driving so long without it. They even make delete kits for them. But, if you get one put on you'll notice it will be smoother than you are use to.
Thanks for the kudos!
@@ktecgarage Thank You so Much!!! I rewatched that video and you showed the 3x Turn trick and I just did it that way!!! It all looks perfectly lined up! Thank you again, I didn't even know about the 3:1 Gear Ratio on the rear balance gear, so even if I had the marks right it may not have even mattered!!! I didn't use the service port hole behind the motor to lock it but I was extra careful to have it just right, 3rd turn where it doesnt fall!
Your very welcome. Good luck!
Very clear explanation! Very good English.
I'm glad to hear the video was helpful. Thank you for the comment!
Can't thank you enough great video very well explained.

great video help alot when change my belts
Thank you! I'm glad to hear the info helped you out.
Never worry about long video that’s what the play back speed options are for and the description box so you can create a Time stamp on each video.
Excellent video
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful.
nice work and thqnk you
Glad to hear you found the video useful!
Thanks for posting! I'm doing a timing belt on a F23A5. Question: how do you put the crank bolt on and off without moving the crankshaft off TDC? The special Honda tool doesn't work at this stage of the process. Thanks.
Moving the crank won't damage anything so long as the timing belt is still on and in proper time. Once you get it loose, you can run it back in "loosely" to move the crank later. Hope I understood your question correctly.
Good luck with your repair and thank you for the comment.
Thanks for that inf I'm been looking all u videos u save me a lot of issues with my car and also that spring that u put last on my car I see it's missing I think that's WY my car always have a noise that's sounds like it power steering bad ( my car has that front cover loose u think I can swap that spring without removing anything on the timing belt because the car runs fine I just don't want too pay for that again if I can do it by myself?
Once the timing parts are tightened down, I don't believe the springs serve any purpose. If it's running fine, don't bother.
Great video ty
Thank you!
Great vid thanks

Good Stuff!!!
Thank you l, good job

Thanks, it was 9 years since I did this to my 1995 and I forgot much of what I learned last time. Should I wait for my new motor mount to set my cam wheel? The engine is setting lower. I guess I could jack it up to where it's supposed to be. Do you turn the crank clockwise or counter clockwise on a 2.2 liter 1995 non vtech engine (1995 accord LX)? Someone told me rotates clockwise but everything I can find says it's like yours counter clockwise.
I would guess counter clockwise, but I'm just some dude on the interwebs. Good luck!
Good video
Hi. I would like to ask a further question about the timing belt replacement if I may. Is it necessary to remove the valve cover.? Could you not remove the timing belt cover and still line up the cam sprocket to TDC by shining a light behind the cam sprocket and lining the side marks on the wheel with the top of cam head??? Please advise , thank you.
The Upper Timing cover has a lip on it, so you pretty much have to at least lift it up so you can get that cover off.
Good Video.
Thank you!

Your video is great really helped me out, very easy to understand and follow!
When I started the car, it started right up ran very smooth and then a minute later it turned off and now I can’t get it started again. What could be wrong? 26:35
Thank you! I hope you figured out the issue. Hard to give advice without a little more information.
Good luck!
@@ktecgarage I think it’s the oil pump? That was the only part I had doubts in what I did. The counter weight I think I didn’t set it right… going back in now I let you know how it goes. Thank you!
Vlw mai friendi, iyou saved mai laive, beijus from Brazil🎉
Thank you! 👋
Can i rotate the Crank for valve adjustment without the balance shaft belt hooked up? Or do i have to have the balance belt on first? Just trying to have the least resistance when rotating 1-3-4-2
If u have the crank and cam pulley timed, u can spin it without the balance shaft belt.
@@ktecgarage thanks
Hi, please explain how you got the timing belt on the cam sprocket at the top and over the crank gear at the bottom without removing the motor mount?
That would have been a magic trick! I did not remove the belt, just the head. You would need to remove the motor mount bolts and use a floor jack to lift that side of the engine to get the belt on. Sorry if the video mislead you. Good luck!
@@ktecgarage Thank you for your kind reply and for your videos on the accord. Very much appreciated!

Show me how to fix freeze plugs and head h
Gastetes
This is the same thing for a 92 Honda Accord right?????
does the car have to be at TDC doing the blanace shaft
No. The shafts are not connected to the cam or crank.
Hey bud I just finished everything and I have a tick do u think the oil hasn't made it to the top yet I turned it off and my p.s. belt is loose
Could be. On 1st starts, I pull the fuel pump fuse and spark plugs and spin the engine with the starter for 30 to 45 seconds to circulate oil. Could also need to adjust the valve lash. Ps belt is adjusted by loosening the pump slightly, pry it up with crowbar or long screwdriver and then re-tighten the bolts with the tension still applied.
@@ktecgarage I got the belt I'm gonna try that with the oil thanks bud have a great new years
It is very possible that the valves could get bent if the belt breaks, but you could get lucky and not bend them.
Great video man. If you don't asking. What year accord is this..??
Thank you!
This is a 2000. The 98-02 are all about the same. Pretty much all of the F series engines are timed like this.
Do you live in N.C. @@ktecgarage?
Yep
Do you travel and do mobile mechanical work ?
Do you have discord?
alright so it seems like I'm overthinking the tension. Hand tight last bigger tensioner bolt, and its buddy bolt, then remove the retainer bolt on the other tensioner. Rotate like 3 teeth to find the proper tension, with everything finger tight, then tighten down once the slack is gone and then boom. all set?
Exactly.
At 5:35 of your video, I believe you need to adjust that via the balancer before taking the belt out. On the plastic cover that you took out, there an indicator/gauge built into the plastic cover that will help you to align this particular part of the timing. See ua-cam.com/video/Zh3K4yiIcAY/v-deo.html.
Thanks for adding that info.

Thank you
Why not just stick something in that hole to hold that pulls before removing belt so you know it’s not going to more on you while working?
I would say that it would be a bit tough to keep the cam or crank from moving during the process. This is how to start from zero to make sure everything was right.
How to keep camshaft from moving
Once I had mine at TDC I didn't have a problem with the cam moving.
@@ktecgarage everytime I rotate crankshaft clockwise one camshaft line up but the other camshaft don't
@@ktecgarage can I buy a camshaft holding tool or something
If you have dual cams, I would get one of those cam locks. They sell them everywhere online. Also, make sure the spark plugs are removed.
Don't have dual cam I'm working on a vtec engine
