    Part eleven of a video series rebuilding a F23A1 Honda Accord engine.
    In the interest of complete accuracy, this is a re-upload of the original video to address some errors that I made. Thanks to the previous viewers that pointed them out to me. I hate being wrong, but I want it right!
    Corrections begin at • F23 Honda Accord Engin...
    We are going to get the cam, rocker assembly and timing belts installed and show the procedure for getting the timing set.
    There are many ways to "skin the cat" and these are the methods that I use. Any criticisms or alternate methods posted in the comments are welcome, just keep it civil.

    Thanks again @ktec. I finished by build last week, basically same engine (mine is AT though), same AMZN rebuild kit. I used your step by step often.
    On the rocker arm assembly, I clamped them so they didn't move, but be very careful to inspect the assembly before you put it down and torque down. There are 4 timing plates that are held by springs in the assembly. If you flip the assembly over, you'll see notches that the plates are supposed to stay on top of. I installed my rocker assembly and 2 were below. This basically meant that one valve each on those two were always pushed down. When I went to do a valve lash adjustment those valves also would adjust since there was zero gap between. I was rushing to see if it would start because was so close and sun was going down. Anyway, the plate piece broke off after the engine was running for about 5-10 minutes. I was lucky, dropped the pan and found it in one piece.
    @ktec please do a rocker arm disassembly and reassembly :) I haven't seen anyone with the F23 done, only a bunch of civics.

      Hope you get plenty of use out of your rebuild! Glad to hear you got that rocker arm assembly straightened out. The comment thread got deleted, but I did post you a diagram of that part of yours that broke off. I suspected that was the issue. If I had known about that part when I did my rebuild, I would have included the info.

    According to the Service Manual, you are to leave the cam bolts in place to keep it from popping apart when removing the rocker assembly. I noticed that in the manual after I pulled all the bolts and mine popped apart. But, your video is by the far the one of the best i've seen.

They bought it used with only 53,000 thousand miles on the clock and never has had a timing belt replaced over 23 years...Belonged to an older lady and the van has been parked over 5 years in her garage. When I was doing the 4 rotations with the belt, I notice that when I am cranking the engine CCW that I can hear and feel the pistons drag within the cylinder walls. Is there supposed to be resistance for half of the rotation and then get smooth for the remainder? The audible sound of the pistons makes me nervous. Is this normal.
    Also do you have a Instagram or any other social media that you can get DMs through?

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  Рік тому +1

      If the spark plugs are installed, cylinder compression will cause it to feel uneven when your rotating the crank. If the engine has not been ran in a while, there won't be oil on the cylinder walls and you will hear the rings dragging. It's not going to hurt anything.
      I do have an Instagram account, but I do not regularly monitor it.

The front balance shaft has a line that should be at 9 o'clock, and the rear balance shaft should be locked in place with a screwdriver or long bolt through the port by the the VIN plate on the rear of the engine.

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  Рік тому +1

      Silly question, but are the spark plugs installed?
      Could be something with the rockers not sitting on the valves right or one of the VTEC components has slipped out of position.
      I'd take the whole assembly off, check everything and try again.

      @@ktecgarage spark plugs are not in, It seems like it way to tight even when I’m not finished torquing it. I think it’s the spring on the vtec love that has all the pressure on it. It’s all longed up right though. My cam should spin freely with out much effort right? Do you think it’s because my block is at TDC and it could be hitting my piston?

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  Рік тому +1

      If you are trying to spin the cam without moving the crank, the valves will hit the pistons. If you muscled it past, you may have bent some valves. That's why you need to put the rocker assembly on with the cam gear in the up position.
      You should never move the crank or cam without the timing belt installed. If you turned it past the point that it was binding, you should really pull the head back off and check the pistons for damage and take the valves out and see if you bent them.
      Sorry to give you bad news.

    What should be done if the hydraulic piston or pin that activates the vtec gets stuck and does not return? Is it necessary to disassemble the rocker arms to be able to repair it or can it be solved without disassembling? • @ktecgarage

  • @mtnfreestyle1899
    @mtnfreestyle1899 3 роки тому

    ive seen a lot of videos on this engine and everyone does the timing different. So what your saying is put the first tensioner on and give it just enough pressure up, to make sure that everything is timed up after 4 rotations cc, and then when you move to the balancer belt, you hand tighten the 2nd bigger bolt, which allows the two tensioners to be pulled by the springs, and then when you turn cc 4 more times, that allows the tension to move for both to be just perfect? you then just tighten the 2 2nd tension bolts and you are gtg? when you started the engine after this did it have any issues? the timing belt seemed a little loose to me from watching other videos. they say 45 degrees is all you need and it looks like your first was 90 and the second was 45

    I see that the oil pump mark moved to 11 o' clock when you tightened the balance shaft belt. Is the timing still correct?

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  3 роки тому

      You rotate the crank slightly to tighten the belts. That moves the crank gear timing mark. If you did it right, all the belt teeth in their right spot, then everything moves in time. Rotate the crank counter clockwise two times back to the oil pump mark and everything lines back up if you did it right.

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  2 роки тому

      I hear ya. The teeth on the timing belt takes care of that. It's not like a serpentine belt that needs more tension. Driven that car thousands of miles since that video and it hasn't jumped time. Trust me!

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  20 днів тому

      Well.... You are running the risk of something like a rock getting between the belt and a gear. That could wreck the whole engine. Not very likely to happen, but Honda puts them on for a reason.

    In the minute 32:40 the adjustment of the band is seen to be loose, that the band is loose is also bad?

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  2 роки тому

      If by the band you mean the timing belt, then no, it's not loose. Several people have asked about the tightness of the belt. If you can turn it 90 degrees and no more, then the tension is right. The belt has teeth and is not like an alternator or serpentine belt. If you over tighten, it can ruin the bearings on the water pump and tensioners. I've put a lot of miles on this car without issue. Trust me!
      Thanks for the comment.

      @@ktecgarage A few days ago I changed the time band (accord 91 ex 2.2) I tried not to adjust the timing belt too much, I read your answer and I checked how many degrees I could turn the belt and I think it is like 50 0 60 degrees, I will try to loosen it a little more, thanks for answering my question

      😬 You can find exploded diagrams online that show the assembly. Pay very careful attention to the flat tabs that fit between the cylinders and their springs. Good luck.

      @@ktecgarage You are the man. My engine has 292K on it. It definitely needs the full rebuild treatment, possibly machine work -- but for now, my first completely solo head gasket job is proving quite successful. Car runs again. Few other tidbits to sort out, but it's a daily driver again. Your videos were instrumental in that. Thank you.

    How do you know that the cam shaft is on rotation 1 and not on rotation 2

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  Рік тому

      Both the crank and cam rotate through 360 degrees. The pulley sizes take care of the rest. When you start with both at top dead center, or 0 degrees, you are good to go.

    • @ktecgarage
      @ktecgarage  3 роки тому

      Oh. And if all that is too confusing, you can loosen all the cam journals under the valve cover. You don't have to take the cam out. Once the journals are loose and lifted up about a half an inch (13mm) you can put everything back in time and re-tourque the journals.

      I started to do a video last year showing how to assemble that but it was too tedious to film. There are exploded view diagrams you can google to help you get it back together. The hardest part to get right are the flat tabs that fit between the small chrome cylinders and their springs. Make sure the springs are holding the tabs in the correct position.
      You can do it and good luck!

    So in other words, honda engines are susceptible to bullshit issues like every other engine. So this idea that Honda engines are the best thing since slaced bread is totally bullshit. Every engine ever designed has quirks and issues, no engine is perfect and if you have the knowledge, those issues don't mean much if you're willing and knowledgeable enough do the work yourself and not get robbed by someone else.
