This is awesome!!! I actually did a mixture with glue and water, kinda like a 1 part glue, 2 parts water. It has to look like rice water. For the clay part to mold…. Would it have been an option to maybe let pieces of newspaper soak over night, then crumble them up or put them in a blender (squeeze out excess water), so it’s easy to place for sculpt in place of the clay? 🤷🏻♀️
Just found this as I am in the middle of making one. Not going to be ready for Halloween, but I will finish it. I have only done the base layer over a beach ball so far. I used glue but good to know flour works. Also the model magic is a good idea. I think I will get some. It will save me some time. Thank you for the video. Great work. 👍
amazing!! my niece (4yo) was sally and i always coordinate my costume. i took jack out last night and he was a huge hit! we went trick or treating in the shops of a small town. i felt like a movie star lmao. so many kids waving, high-fiving, and wanting pictures! i made this over the last 4 days, which wasn’t ideal, but it’s done. i used a 24” balloon and also only did 3 layers of paper mache. if i had more time, i would’ve done more. totally missed the part of the video when you said you waited 2 days for the modeling magic to dry. OOPS. i placed the head in front of my heater on high for a couple hours, then paper mached over it to seal it. jack held up really well for those few hours. he’ll go back out tonight. for my suit, i thrifted pants and a jacket and used an oil based paint pen for the pinstripes. not super visible on photos, but looks good as heck. spirit has these amazing extra long jack finger gloves that pulled the whole thing together. thanks for this amazing tutorial! i’m blown away that i was able to make it and that it looks as good as it does. happy halloween! 🎃
Love it!!! I'm currently making one for Halloween. I'm at the point of painting. Tried it on and because of the weight of the clay the mask wants to lean forward, any tips to keep it on straight?

@crstallucero If you want to make the mask last along time get a cheap paint brush and paint inside and outside with 3 layers of resin (thin coats / let dry between layers) then a thin coat of sandable primer ( KILZ water based)(let dry) and the 2nd coat go heavier, let dry and paint You can get a cheap adjustable helmet in the bike section or find one at thrift store. Make sure it is comfortable. You’ll want to peel off the outer shell so you have the styrofoam….hot glue in place. Once you have in place and it’s comfortable reinforce with 2 part epoxy… you just put some on each side and front and back it will make it really secure. thought I would respond if your still trying to finish your mask. Hope this helps…it isn’t a hard project; the hardest thing is letting each layer dry and you can speed that up with a hair dryer😊
I let my first layer dry and when I picked it up on the morning I noticed it was super wrinkly on the bottom side. Any advice? I think maybe the glue ran down or there was air coming out.

I typically don't wear mine for super long periods of time so it hasn't hurt my head, but I am thinking about adding pool noodles on the inside to make it a bit more comfortable
Mine stuck to the paper mache without any glue and then I paper mached over it to hold it in place. For anywhere it doesn’t stick- you can use hot glue or super glue! Hope that helps!

This is so beautifully done! You might have answered this already - but what's the ratio for your flour and water paper mache mix? I'm trying to do a huge pumpkin head and your work is so good!
Thank you so much!!! I don’t do an exact science to my paper mache mixing. I normally pour flour in first and add the water slowly while stirring. You want the mix to be thin enough to spread easily. Probably a little more liquidity than white glue. Hope that helps!

Hi! For my project, I used the 36" balloons and my 8 year old niece sometimes will wear the Jack Head around the house. She doesn't seem to have any issues with the large size. If you are looking for something smaller, you can always try the 24" balloons or purchase the 36" balloons and then just only blow them up as large as you think will look appropriate on the child. rolled up/bunched paper towels, then covered with paper mache works good in place of the clay

What type of white paint did you use to paint the head?

Did you place anything over the eyes? Like a mesh? Or can people see you?
I would use speaker cloth to cover the eyes. You can see out but makes it so people can’t see in.
You could use lightweight air dry clay
How much of the model magic did you use please?
I believe I used about 3 of the smaller packets of the model magic.

How do you make the air flow? You could suffocate
The eyes are cutouts so you can both see through them and breathe through them.
Could add a pair of small computer fans hooked to a battery pack or cell phone charging stick.

Ok but how did you get the ball out?
It’s a balloon. It either deflates or you pop it!
once the outside is dry and not flimsy you can put a hole in to the balloon. Do not just pop it. Then cut the holes
should try out paper clay not the ceramics one, but the paper mache one instead of the air dry.
