Funny enough, Disney fired him for "wasting resources" (when he directed the original Frankenweenie short).
Not to mention his "Hansel and Gretel" short on Disney Channel was broadcast there only once due to being supposedly scary.
It wasn't until his Batman movie was successful that he came back to Disney to work on this movie and "James and the Giant Peach".

Tim Burton created the Nightmare Before Christmas story, characters, wrote and drew the book and produced the film, Glenn Shadix, who voiced of the Halloween Town Mayor, pointed out "Tim [Burton] oversaw every detail of that film. Henry Selick was wonderful as a hands-on director of the stop-motion and an incredible group of animators, but the heart and soul of that movie is Tim Burton. He made decisions all along the way. He wasn't at Skellington Productions in San Francisco all that often, but Tim was certainly at the helm creatively and in on all the decisions." Tim Burton explained, "When I wasn't shooting [Batman Returns], I would go up there [to the Skellington Productions studio] because I loved it, but most of the time, Henry [Selick] would just send me stuff - there'd be a few shots during the week - and so over the period of a couple of years, it all came together. Anyway, I would get a reel and I had an editing room and I would edit some shots. I could still affect things as I needed to. When I saw the first shots, I knew that Halloween Town had to be darker and blacker." www.mouseplanet.com/12183/The_Making_of_Tim_Burtons_The_Nightmare_Before_Christmas__Part_One

This film was truly ground breaking in the stop animation department. It's because of the amount of hard work and detail that these meticulous animators put in that it's such a beloved classic and has survived for 20+ years and is considered a Halloween/Christmas favorite. I love this movie, watch it every Christmas. I only watch the first half up to Jack's lament at Halloween then finish the movie at Christmas. LOL.

Stop motion animation is one of the few unique styles that CGI hasn't been able to replicate. As much as I love so much what is done now, my point was that even with all we're capable of now, this style from so far back is still such an unique way of making a film and stands apart as an amazing style that is as beautiful as any special effects to witness. One clue as to the kind of producer Tim Burton was on this movie is the temperaments of the people who worked underneath him. At 2:49, Henry Selick seems pleased to be directing the movie. But at 3:33, you can kind of tell that Danny Elfman is pissed off about the fact that the movie started production without a script. Elfman has since admitted that he and Burton had a major falling-out on this movie. Elfman was frustrated that this movie (as well as "Batman Returns") consumed two years of his life, and I think he was also annoyed that Burton could never make up his mind on things. That's why Burton replaced Elfman with Howard Shore on "Ed Wood", although he and Elfman later reconciled on "Mars Attacks!". They have since mutually agreed never to speak again about the bad experience they had working together on Nightmare Before Christmas.

30 years old and still best. the characters were great, the animation were smooth, the songs are genuine, and mostly, the effects were Amazing. They worked really hard and great. They took time slow, they take notes before released, the figures were adorable (boogie was too much a coward wimp to be scary.), but one problem is that the movie ends. But I don't rush them. even the minor/other bg characters are also amazing! Every holiday doesn't matter, this movie matters. Period.

  • @musecangel
    @musecangel 10 років тому +6

The Haunted Mansion is MUCH older than this movie. It opened in Disneyland in 1969.
Also, Tim Burton owns 50% of the rights to the film - and he supposedly won't let Disney make a ride of it (so far.)

30 years old and as timeless as ever
It's from the mind of Tim Burton but director Henry Selick is the one to thank for this gem of a holiday flick despite it being only 76 minutes long
Jack Skellington embodies a preoccupation common in Burton's work over the years; the terrifying notion of being misunderstood
That's something a lot of us can relate to indeed, at times we can be carried away with something new going way overboard with enthusiasm
Halloween is special but we're reminded too why Christmas is just as beloved
This works immensely thanks to its original storytelling, stellar animation, excellent set and character designs, clever camera angles, memorable songs, a slick villain, and a very good message of not messing with another holiday learning to cope with what we have
Danny Elfman's score is unforgettable as well
Truth be told the movie made even the executives who worked on it very nervous
The dialogue is very basic and it's not that deep as far as character complexity
Yet this still worked regardless inspiring all kinds of merchandise from holiday decor to clothing for Hot Topic to video games to board games to housewares to theme park attractions etc.
It made over $50 million and winning critics and audiences alike being a perennial favorite for Halloween lovers as well as a hot item for costumes, cosplayers, and conventions
'Nightmare Before Christmas' remains astonishingly imaginative, brisk, beautifully told in its storytelling, and operates as a simplistic fairytale being very accessible to everyone serving as a cautionary fable

Nightmare before christmas is a stop-motion, puppet animation, not claymation. The characters are built using various materials, mainly latex to allow ease of movement. A claymation would be where the characters are made from clay, or in some cases for example Wallace and gromit, where the characters are made from plastercine.
