I'm starting to think that Crayola changed their formula since I made mine since so many people are having issues with it. If anybody has an idea for a similar clay, comment it below! (This clay is super light and dries more like a light rubber ball which made it perfect for a mask. Also, if anybody knows, does vaseline help prevent it from sticking to the cardboard? I didn't have this problem, but others are)
I noticed that the humidity in your home really matters. It wasn't dry after 3 days of letting it sit, so I took it to my office at work where it is much drier, and it was dry by noon. Also, after the outside of the mask was dry, I placed the mask back into the mold to allow the inside to dry. The only breakage we had was around the lips and eye sockets, possibly because I didn't make it thick enough? But masking tape really did the trick to make everything right. Maybe lining the cardboard with masking tape or regular tape would prevent stickage?
I added a plastic bag over the mask and cardboard because originally it wasn’t coming off and was sticking after a week. So I took it out as best I could and added the plastic bag and reshaped it.
My mask took about a week to fully dry(Crayola model magic), I even brushed a layer of gorilla glue over it to ensure it wouldn't break/fall apart. Looks good now!
you can buy plastic bugs at a toy store and mold them in coloured hot glue (if you don't wanna work with latex) make a mold out of sculpy and fill with hot glue. and maybe a couple of hidden pockets with gummy worms.
@@teddybundy2084 I know. however buying a whole lot of fake bugs would probably be quite expensive and this is a DIY project already I felt it appropriate to give an example of how to create them oneself.
I was thinking about it, maybe you could sew some boondogglse, or very thick wool out of the fake sewings, to make it look like caterpillars or larvae crawling out of the sack...
A tip from someone who's repaired a few pro mascot costumes: Frost King air filter foam gets the effect you're looking for from the tulle, with only one layer, and it's easier to work with.
My husband and I just got done making this following this wonderful tutorial. AMAZING results! A few humble tips: - for the mask, the model magic clay held up pretty well, but had a few weak areas that we were able to reinforce well with masking tape and hot glue. - we put the burlap over the mask before we put in the tulle for the eyes and the felt for the mouth and found this to be easier. 4-5 layers of tulle should be enough. - we found jute-colored paint to fill in the leftover white areas around the eyes and mouth that you'll probably have too. - like she suggests, safety pins do great holding the elastic headband on if you don't know how to sew. - depending on the burlap you use, you may need to double up the layers for the entire costume like we did because of the transparency of the burlap available to us. Not a huge issue with hot gluing layers together. The legs only needed the one layer, though. - we used a golf ball to weigh down the cone of his head because the cotton stuffing wasn't doing the trick. - when cutting out the body, give yourself A LOT of room around your chest and shoulders or else your costume will be much too tight. - we cut small inconspicuous slits into the hands so that my husband had the option to use his thumbs to hold drinks, then hide them away afterwards. We also added in a tiny hole to the mouth so that he could use drinking staws. - instead of securing the legs with string around the upper legs, we just got an old pair of my husband's gym shorts (ones with a drawstring) and hot glued them to those to make "pants." Much more secure. He's going to be walking in this thing a lot! - we finally gave up on the velcro on the shoulders and just did a zipper on the back and glued the shoulders up. With 2 layers of burlap on the front and back, the velcro wasn't strong enough.

I’ve been in it since mid July!! That’s when I decorated my house!! As soon as hobby lobby starts putting the fall stuff out I can’t take it. Now all I need is our weather here in Oklahoma to stop being so dang hot and humid. It’s still getting up into the low to mid 90’s. I’m sick of it.
“What’s this? What’s this! I can’t believe my eyes!!” This is the best costume I have seen!!😆 just watched The Nightmare Before Christmas and loved it. This costume should be worn on the streets of Disneyland for the Oogie Boogie bash!! I still can’t get over how freakin awesome this is!!
Omg I'm so broke, but wanna do that so badddddd, I love oogie boogie. Edit: okay, so, I'm 16, and jobless, my mom is not in the picture, and my dad is crippled, it's super hard, we can hardly keep up with our electricity bill...it is really hard...so please, I understand that you think it's me being lazy, but I promise you, it's not. Also, thank you for all the likes!!! It means alot to me!!!
i dont think it would be too expensive!! Maybe 40 dollars? all the expense would go into the fabric and the clay and the stuffing, you can find everything else at the dollar store.
You can get the jute cord, tule, halloween mask, sewing needles, and paint for pretty cheap at walmart/ the dollar store. You might be able to get the burlap for pretty cheap and they have generic clay at craftstores for 10 dollars for a 10 lb box (you can use a coupon to make it 6 if you go to hobby lobby). If you know any stores that get shipments in burlap bags you can ask them for those. I got some from a guy that sells cacao beans. All in all this costume cost me personally 20 dollars and 20 hours lol
I went and had a look at the Joann's fabric site since I want to make this as well- their burlap is 4 dollars a yard and you'd probably need 6 yards so $24. But if you get their coupon for 40% off, (it's here: www.joann.com/coupon/ ) that's only about 15 bucks so really, not too bad. If you have other fabric stores nearby you might be able to find it for even cheaper. My local Walmart has it for 3 bucks per yard so it might be worth it to shop around. Good luck. :)

One major change I did was leave the bottom open. This allows for less restrictive leg movement, but more importantly, it allows me the ability to put the costume on like a dress. That is, over my heat, I stead of stepping into it. This is much easier to get in and out of. My Oogie is very chunky, so the open bottom doesn't look any different when left open than when it's sealed.
I love this tutorial. I've been wanting to do Oogie Boogie for a couple of years now, but the costume (Disney TM) is so darn expensive! I will have to try this next year, and use the time to learn the Oogie Boogie song :)!

Wonderful costume. Good job.
Did you feel like calling a friend and kidnap some sandy claws? Hot stuff, awesome costume lml
My friend group is being nightmare before Christmas characters this year and I couldn’t find any affordable Oogie boogie costumes this is perfect!

I love this tutorial. I've been wanting to do Oogie Boogie for a couple of years now, but the costume (Disney TM) is so darn expensive! I will have to try this next year, and use the time to learn the Oogie Boogie song :)!
Probably the best oogie boogie costume I’ve Evers seen!
