Artist's quest
As a wildlife artist, I like to get to know my subjects well so that I can convey their individual characters in my paintings. Little owls have always been one of my favourite birds to watch, but I’ve never been able to film their secret lives inside the nest.
Creating habitat
I began my journey by building a bespoke nest, made to the exact specifications of a little owl and placed in a spot I knew the owls would like. Watch this to learn more about how to build a nest for a little owl: • How I Built a Deluxe B...
Attracting a little owl
Within four days, a little owl turned up to inspect my nest and I watched with baited breath as he brought his mate to see what she thought of it.
Signs the little owl pair may lay eggs
When the female shuffled her body down and began to dig a nesting scrape into the bottom of the nest, I really thought she could choose to lay her eggs here! The pair seemed to really like it, they spent their days keeping guard and their nights mating on perches I built outside… although things didn't always go to plan!
Competition
But nest sites are in short supply, and soon a young male kestrel showed an interest in the site.
Little owl defence
When the kestrel pinched the little owl's food, the little owl decided to take action. A little owl is much smaller than a kestrel, but it is fierce and after a tense standoff it was the larger kestrel that retreated.
A new box
The kestrel needed a nest, so I designed a new, more spacious, box with him in mind. And sure enough the kestrel seemed to like it - watch as he nods his head! But it's not long before this new site is up, it catches the little owl's eye.
And another clash
Little owls will usually choose small, dark spaces so I was surprised to see them in this large, light nest site. But they seem delighted and I got to watch some beautiful courtship behaviour. In fact they seem to like it so much they fought the kestrel for it - and a barn owl that also showed an interest.
Little owl attack
The little owl is a fierce fighter. Incredibly it grabbed a barn owl twice its size and yanked it out of the box.
The pair move on
Then, after all that, the little owls decided not to nest here. Perhaps they felt the competition was too fierce. Either way I haven't seen the female for some time so I think she must have laid her eggs elsewhere.
Looking out for chicks
Wherever they are nesting, I hope they have a healthy brood and I’ll be keeping a close eye out for chicks. I didn't get to watch them raise their young inside the nest, but I've enjoyed a privileged view into their secret courtship.

he knows what a camera is the birds are becoming smarter
The perfect , "wtf", "why?", "who?", "how?" expression.
You can even see the middle of his eyes squint a little bit like he's getting mad haha
The way the little owl looked at the camera after his mouse came up missing was like "did you take my food ?"

Maybe it's the cameras Mrs Little Owl didn't like? She clearly reacted to them.
Yes, I was wondering that..
She doesn't want to be in a reality show 😂 "Keeping Up With the Little Owls"
tbh it seems lax after all the rest of the effort to make it a viable nest site not to make more effort to disguise the cameras which clearly stand out as unnatural by contrast.
Even a printed wood texture sticker on the camera plastic could have improved it a lot.
Maybe thought her reflection was the males bit on the side.. 😂
He’s the professional and obviously knows what he’s doing based on the impressive videos he gets.
The housing market is tough right now, even for birds.

Oh this is wonderful!! You have such a talent for telling a story and the music is spot on. Thank you for all your hard work and allowing us to peek into the lives of these adorable Little Owls🤗
Wonderful footage - what a privilege to see this intimate behaviour. Thank you so much, Robert. When I was about nine, a little owl made her nest in the big horse chestnut tree next door. She appeared to be raising her lone chick on her own - we never saw the male and had no idea about number of chicks until just the one emerged. My father bought rabbit meat to help her out and left it on the roof of an outbuilding. One day the chick branched and sidled along the dividing wall between the gardens. I stared at him in wonder. The chick stared back. And then, ever so slowly, he blinked a blink such as I had never seen before. Thus began my love affair with these amazing, beautiful, clever little birds.
Little owls are some damn cool birds as well. One of the most striking videos i remember seeing was a little owl standing alone in a huge open field, fearing absolutely NOTHING. The human filming it came up to it, no reaction. PETTED IT for about 30 seconds with only minor reaction from the little owl, until it finally said "okay, enough of this. You're to big and unafraid to be prey, you're not attacking me so you're not a predator, you are grooming me like family, but you are not little owl! okay, enough of this. I'm out."
It was the cutest damn thing for a little ball of fluff to be so unafraid, and I loved them ever since.
6:23 oldest trick in the book. Snatch the feet when fighting! XD
2:34 Falling off clumsily whilst mating….we’ve all been there 😂

If everyone would just do one small thing where they live, just think how we could help our wildlife. Yopu are a great example, role model to follow. Each of us owes our wildlife such advocacy and respect.
It must be so wonderful to devote your life to something like this, you are blessed Robert.

After seeing the barn owl family video I can’t wait to see how little owls raise a family.
Dang, I was so hoping they were going to settle in the nest box you made for them! Better luck next year =) and hopefully even just these few events made it worth your effort.
Also, it looks like REF is coming up quick on 200k subscribers - some well-deserved success!
Thank you so much - it is great to share some wonderful moments with all of my subscribers.
That owl doesn’t play around 😂. But, this is great to see, I wish we took care of the environment better, so that animals could thrive more 😄
Nothing better than Nature and Natural sounds. These smallest little owls nestle in a tree near my house. So i can happily hear their Ie-ie-ie-ie-wwww-- ie-ie-ieww sounds all year round.
In the Netherlands they are called "steenuilen" , dutch for "stone-owls".

Brilliant little owls along with tawny owls make the most wonderful sounds you are so lucky to have them close by 😃
Oh my gosh! I’m in love with the little owls.
You’re an earth angel to these beautiful avians Robert!! Grateful for you building homes nest for them!!
What you are doing is amazing, Robert. There is no match for observing nature in its element, and I hope that in time because of people like you that captivity of animals will start to be phased out.
Well said - the sooner the better!
Thank you Robert to share this beautiful nature ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it
If only people wouldn't cut down dead trees, the birds need homes and a dead tree to me can be beautiful when it has nesting birds year after year. Your nest boxes are wonderful, good man. I love owls especially. Thank you for providing these nesting residences.
This is the sweetest video, I love all the attention to nests and how you're carefully tracking the birds and explaining their behaviors
Also I am now emotionally attached to the kestrel and the barn owl as well, I hope they're doing well wherever they are
Little owls are my favourite, small but fierce
The way his head whipped towards the camera at the beginning I-
The female little owl seemed disgusted when she noticed her mate had a hidden camera installed! 😂
They are so cute and well done!
His face when his mouse gets stolen lol poor owl
Awwwh! I've also noticed, watching the live videos, that the little owl doesn't seem to be going into the actual nest anymore. He's been staying in the tunnels, so when he all of a sudden comes out, I'm really shocked cause I thought little owl wasn't in there 😂💞
I just can't: how they can be so cute, hilarious and ferocious at the same time?
THAT BIRD SHOOK ITS HEAD YES OMG!
This is litrally one of the best videos I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. So wholesome and interesting. Love that wee owls spirit!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love all your clips, it's heart breaking to think they have to compete for space. We need to leave parts of our environment alone. We have destroyed so much. The barn owls have such beautiful colours, the kestrels have what I call their little fluffy bloomers atop their legs and the little owls have so much spirit. Awesome.

When his mouse disappears, the expression on his face is priceless, “OMG, call the police, I’ve been robbed” ‼️ I can’t wait to see more footage of these little owls!
