Barn owl cams
Surveillance cameras hidden inside barn owl nests in my North Yorkshire garden mean I am able to follow the individual lives of owls and share their unique characters with you.
Barn owl courtship
The season begins in January 2021 when barn owls Willow & Ghost first pair up. Both owls are young and inexperienced and their awkwardness is palpable. Ghost, who gets his name from his pale colouring, is easily recognisable - an easy way to tell the difference between male and female barn owls is that the males are usually whiter.
Choosing a nest
But their first breeding season gets off to a poor start after the pair seem hopelessly indecisive. Barn owls normally nest in spring, and the process normally begins with the male choosing a site and then encouraging the female in to inspect it.
Fighting over nest sites
True to form, Ghost chooses a nest box I put up for owls here in my garden at Fotherdale in North Yorkshire. Sycamore Stump seems ideal and when Ghost shows it to Willow she seems to agree, but there is a problem. A pair of resident kestrel also want this nest and these falcons are ferocious!
Late brood
The kestrels lose the battle for the box and Ghost and Willow retreat to a box in another part of the garden, named Barn Owl Box. Unfortunately, Willow does not seem to approve and Ghost is a very inexperienced lover so the pair don't breed here. Instead, they wait until the kestrel family have vacated the Sycamore nest stump and so Willow doesn't lay her eggs until late July.
The chicks
Willow lays four eggs in total, at intervals of 2/3 days, and the chicks hatch as August slips into September. This is very late for barn owl chicks to hatch - most are fledging by now. Sadly the youngest chick does not survive and Willow feeds it to the others - although this seems cruel, barn owls don't waste food and it is not unusual for a chick to eat its sibling.
Growing up
Watching these barn owl babies grow is fascinating. Viewers of my livestream named the chicks Ginger, Cinnamon and Clove, names that suited their beautiful colouring as their feathers grew.
Food is scarce
But it quickly becomes clear that first time dad Ghost is a poor provider. Male barn owls normally work round the clock to feed their young families, but this family are in danger of starving and I decide to help out - offering meals to the young to keep them alive.
Time to fly
My strategy works and as October moves into November, the three chicks take their first flights.

In Ancient Greece and Roma, the screams of these owls scared the supertitious people back then to the point they believed it was a bloodsucker demon-bird called a "strix", a term meaning literally "screecher". Later the term "strix" derivated in the latin "striga" which served to designate also witches or occult practitionners, to the point you can notice thanks to the latin expansion and influence the term exists also in slavic countries like Poland under the term "Stryzga".
Unfortunately as "strix" were bad omen bearers, Barn owls were often gruesomely killed especially in late Ancient History/Early Middle Age.
It also was used later for several naturalistic classifications as the Barn owl was known as "Strix alba" ("White screecher", Scopoli, 1769), "Strix pratincola" ("Meadow screecher", Bonaparte, 1838) before being designated under the current name of "Tyto alba" ("Tyto" refering to nocturnal birds in Greek).

@@TheXian9 he has consent,from DEFRA (department of farming and agriculture). Owls are protected species in the uk,if you disturb them without a licence(consent) you face a hefty fine
Weighing, ringing and recording monitors location,numbers and healthy development of many birds in the uk, (particularly birds of prey) and is used to help future planning by DEFRA.
Currently bird numbers are slowly rising,following a massive drop in numbers in the 50's/60's/ early 70's believed to be due to now banned chemical pest and weed control
America is however still having major species loss,due to lack of proper controls on industrial and agricultural usage of chemicals 😪

Ghost has a very anthropomorphic set of expressions. When Willow flies away he looks at her as if to say “where the f are you going NOW!? I thought you wanted this nest!” Later, when he doesn’t understand that Willow laid an egg, he looks at the egg, then at Willow, then back at the egg, completely bamboozled.
He's not just bamboozled he's flabbergasted astounded

and sure, that may seem easy, but remember that egg laying takes all the nutrients and vitamins out of the mother, and they also have to warm the eggs with their own body heat, so the only options are to A: sit there and starve to keep the next generation alive, unless the other parent provides food (depending on the habits of the species), or B: Go out and get the food and risk the next generation, if the partner doesn't show up with food. it not like animals choose what they do, its all instinct and then they die. in fact, one would argue that being the mother is more of a big picture thing, because technically speaking its more of a liability to the being itself. it's not like they say to themselves and their partner: "hey, i want to sit here and starve and watch the eggs, so take care of me okay?" they just do it because their instincts tell them too, usually at the behest of their own health.

I love and find it hilarious that when Willow laid her first egg and was calling for Ghost, he assumed he's being called to mate without imagining that any other reason could exist and the moment he arrives without a second of hesitation immediately proceeds to mate with her with an annoyed and hilarious expression what i could only interpret as him thinking: "god damn it woman how much more do you need".

I dont know why I assumed all animals were experts in mating even when they had never done it before, but these two stumbling around actually makes so much more sense… what a lovely pair, thank you for telling their story to us. I love birds so much. They’re very unique creatures.

Relationship takes time an effort, you can see it in all types of creatures
Probably cause David Attenborough never films the failed mating attempts, only the successful ones so he can move on to tell the story of baby animals growing up and cover the entire natural history. This guy is telling a different story that includes their developing relationship and all the failures and successes until nesting and fledging is achieved. :)
Yeah Ghost isn't quite sure what to do, but he gets the hang of it in the end. Good work little buddy, you got the girl! Owls tend to mate for life so this pair ought have many baby owls in their future.

The way Willow is so careful with where she steps after laying her eggs and when her babies hatch is so heartwarming. She’s so mindful of her claws and once she feels them accidentally lay on her chicks/eggs she immediately retracts them; what a great mother. ❤

@@gh0st_0f_b0b_chandler I don't think there was alot of time between when he noticed it was not doing well, and when it died. And it's not like it's easy to just roll up into the nest with a protective mama sitting. Watching his other videos, he deff doesn't seem shy to intervene and help out the birds so I'm guessing between the mama/siblings blocking view of the little bird, and the fact that he doesn't sit watching them 24hrs a day, by the time he noticed just how bad the little baby was doing it was to late.

I still can't believe how chill the owlets are when being taken out of the nest to be ringed. Here's this monsterous fleshy claw coming down into the nest to grab them out and into the open world and they are all "eh, this is fine." Especially when compared to the fledgeling kesterels who fight Robert beak and talon, clamping onto him and screeching to the heavens when it's ringing time for them. ;-) LOVE these videos, thank you for doing this Robert.

I think they were likely sedated🤔 He had to have put a gentle sedative in the food he was giving them so that they would stay calm while being handled. Look closely when he's fitting the ring on the baby owls leg and you will see that the baby has pretty much fallen asleep🥰 No baby goes to the pediatrician without squealing and these babies are no exception😅 They would have been flapping wings or something, not just sleeping when humans are touching them😅
@@Simplythetruthfulone Owls actually have a sort of “play dead” response like Opossums do. They think if they’re still and quiet the danger will go away. They’re not drugged lol just patiently waiting for the tall flesh monster to let them go.

It's really interesting how just being the "protagonist" can make us root for them even though ultimately their goals are the same.

Why didn't he do that when he saw that the chick was starving to death? I thought he wasn't helping because you aren't supposed to help in documentaries because of survival of the fittest, or what have you. But then after the baby died he helped the mother and the rest of the chicks. Whatever happened to survival of the fittest?
Like I know the bigger chick kept stealing the little ones food, but if he threw in a handful of mice the other siblings wouldn't be able to finish there's in time to steal the little chicks food and the little one would be able to scarf it down and get caught up in size.

The smallest one could eat things whole at that point because the mother tried to feed it the mouse whole before the biggest stole it. It just never had the chance to.
And if he threw a handful in there the other two wouldn't be able to eat there's fast enough to steal the little ones mouse.
Also "you never know when she'll be back to check on the nest." Well that fact apparently didn't stop him because he still did it. Just after the smallest died.
I'm a follow grown man, but when she laid the egg I was struggling. But when he noticed she laid an egg, o couldn't help it, a tear managed to find it's way out.

So great how Robert improved the nest to convince Willow. When she then still moves to the preferred one you can literally tell how Ghost then looks at the egg in disbelief, finally getting the picture. Hope he picks up some habits from Finn as he matures.

It's amazing to get to see these beautiful birds up close and personal the way you show them. Otherwise I'd never get to see an owl. I used to hear one occasionally in a tree behind the place where I live but I could never see it. Thank you so much for all your videos. I'm learning so much.

I love how in-demand that stump is XD. I love how while Willow doesn't kill Mrs. Kestrel or her chicks, but apparently watches the stump every single day for the Kestrels to leave XD, and then fights for it XD, and then realizes 'whoa wait this is too much activity, I want to go back to that special place we've been living in and not getting bothered at for the last two months, only for no one else to take the stump and her to eventually go 'OH OKAY ILL TAKE IT' again XD

We had several barn owls on our ranch and when we first moved in and heard their screeching I thought a woman was being killed on the road! We also Great Horned owls that lived in a 60 foot high tree! I loved watching these amazing birds!

I notice you always try to avoid encountering the parent birds when you ring chicks. I totally get why, since their talons are far better than the younsters', but what happens if/when one of the parents gets back before you've returned the chicks?
It’s doesn’t happen as we ring them right next the nest. But having had loads of experience with wildlife and rehabilitation even if the chicks were away for days the adults will still come back to them an look after them
@@RobertEFuller I figured the parents would look after the chicks anyways. My line of thinking was more "What would the parents do to _you_ if you came back with their kids in a bucket?"
What I assume gpes in in the parent's mind is that the kids explored and will be back within the day.
Especially at this size.
If they arent, they might go look for them.
@@bluesbest1 probably the human will try not to confront the parents due to the obvious risk of injury. Hence, he will wait until they are gone and perhaps keep the chicks in a warm safe place until he returns them back to the nest.

Their journey was so lovely to witness! I was surprised at how chill the babies were when you took them out of the nest. We really have to give it to Willow (and to you!) for devotedly looking after them. I’m also really curious now what ended up happening with Ghost!
