- Ahead of the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California this weekend, I joined the Enve crew for a 230km jolly from San Francisco to Monterey, and the bike I rode was an interesting prospect for the cyclist seeking all the advances of the latest modern cycling technology.

How do you have this video up already? I just barely took my riding shoes off… Always a pleasure, sir. ✌️
😂
Awesome day out, thanks again for joining
You probably needed a nap after dragging David along all day 💤
😂
Nice to see you in "beast mode" here, Ben...😁 Feelin' the "turbo boost" coming from altitude?
Welcome to the Bay Area David. Enjoy your time here. Look forward to see your videos of the festival.
Thank you! Will do!
What a delightful surprise to see my local roads on this channel! Stage Road and the area around there are hard to beat.
Hanging with Ben again- looks like a really fun day- enjoy yourself at Sea Otter
Great video, loved that it was less about the bike and more about the ride!
That was my experience riding in California. Beautiful riding, great routes available. You just end up riding longer because of it, 4 hour rides were common, 100+ mile rides weekly and it never felt like too much....except at the top of Pine Flat Road, that was a lot, but worth it.
If I could afford it, I would buy it. I love the tech in that bike and it seems like the future-if it works!
Welcome to the Bay Area! You picked the perfect weather to come out and enjoy that California light :)
What an amazing opportunity 🎉 Congratulations on getting invitations like this one.
Welcome to my home state. I'm glad the conditions suited you well.
Wow,enjoyed that one Dave, thanks for sharing.
Welcome to California. It is a great ride down the coast from just north of San Fransico to San Diego. You will never get tired of the views.
I really enjoyed this episode. Beautiful ride and scenery, and a beautiful bike.
Awesome work David! Sounds like great adventure :)
Dont think I’ve seen you have as much fun before 👍🏿
230kms - I take my hat off to you! Interesting video.
Castroville, California. Castroville is a tiny agricultural town with a big heart. Just a few miles inland from the Monterey Bay and surrounded by robust fields of artichokes sits Castroville, known as the "Artichoke Capital of the World."
Thanks for this video! I'm off to California today :D renting bike for a few days, so excited!
Wow, David Arthur in California! I got pulled in by the video title. So fun to see the big and almost continuous smile on your face. To top it off, you were riding in my "backyard" and I am happy to see you enjoying it so much. (Glad you survived the twisty, narrow, high speed, blind corner section just south of Pacifica before you got to the Devil's Slide Tunnel bypass! Also, looks like you rode on a week day since you were on the "city" side of the Golden Gate Bridge - the views are better on that side of the bridge imho. On weekends, they put bicycles on the "ocean" side of the bridge away from the pedestrians. Still a great view, but seeing SF as you cross the bridge is fantastic.). Hope you come back for more someday!
For me the biggest disadvantage is that it is mounted in the hub. I like having two wheelsets, one for road and one for gravel. That would mean I'd need to spend more money and get two classified hubs.
Think you can just buy the core of the hub.
You just need to buy your spare wheel with the hub shell.
Then you just remove the inner workings and swap.
Quick job!
I am sure that was a very difficult choice to accept that invitation 😂 Great video looks an amazing ride
Makes we wanna ride there. I like the freedom the bike gives you regarding your route choice.
looks like a beautiful ride. stunning coastal sections.
My favourite part of the world, used to live and work there pre-pandemic. Would regularly take the trip up and down PCH-1. It’s beautiful. That section you commented on as you come down from Skyline Boulevard towards Devils Slide and the run down into Half Moon Bay is just epic. It’s stunning on a bike. Carmel is also beautiful, enjoy the area. It’s amazing. Good vid, I like the longer ride format 👍
Welcome to the states!!
A kick watching your impressions of the Ca. Coast - where I live and ride. Thanks for the vid.
You lucky guy David! What a fabulous area to ride and the bike was super cool too
Aww man so cool your riding The Golden Gate Bridge. Making me Homesick. I Live in Australia now. Thanks for the cool video.
Fantastic video and looks lovely! I remain unconvinced by the classified hub over a front mech or just 1by its self. But interesting technology nevertheless
Looks like a amazing ride and awesome view!
Welcome to the bay area! Glad you like our roads.
I passed you on Hawk Hill a few days ago 👍
Fellow Brit living in SF. Love seeing the California riding through your eyes.... it still blows me away and I do it every week. Enjoy the Sea Otter David 🙏
Amazing roads and an amazing crankset!
Amazing 👏
Beautiful bike! 🚲
Great vid. I'm not familiar with what a classified hub is, but I like the introduction of the one-by front hub, which is growing in acceptance .
Congrats on the ride too
Having rode south of San Francisco this autumn around North peak and along highway 1 I have to agree coming from the UK it’s very nice
That looks so amazing !!! I've been swimming by the Golden Gate bridge, but riding over it with my bicycle is on my bucket list now. So cool :-)
That Paradise loop is fantastic, always stoked to ride it when in that area (I'm in Portland, OR).
I can see going with the Classified rear hub vs front mech to retain the wider clearance of many bikes in 1x config vs 2x, but still get a really nice gear range for nearly any type of ride.
Wow. Looks like the north side of Mallorca blended with the best bits of Lanzarote + great looking bike. Very clean setup with the classified hub. I'm currently considering an Emonda to complement my checkpoint and my De Rosa SK, but this Fray certainly isn't looking bad
I was thinking Mallorca too
Those enve tires are great. I was worried when they were new bc they picked up every bit of junk from the road but I didn’t get any flats and eventually the stickiness wore off.
I'm a fan of 1x and that looks lovely in my view....As for the views, they were stunning....
David Arthur on my local roads!
Great ride, scariest part is 1km Pacifica to tunnel on hwy 1, there is gravel alternative to that piece. Luck with weather it was 10c and raining on weekend. Although generally weather is great for riding here.
Is that the area they call (or used to call) Devil's Slide? Had a business trip there about 15 years ago, when they were building the tunnels.
@@WhaJMc yes, when you ride south from Pacifica , there a windy road 1 lane each way with no margin so feels very dangerous especially if riding solo
That section is only .5. Miles and you get the amazing Devils Slide without cars.
30+ km/h for more than 7 and half hours is no small feat 💪, even with Ben at the front 🚚😉
Very interesting frame, a bit out of my league price-wise but this all-road stuff (big clearance + road-endurance geometry) is exactly what I like in a bike 😍
7:40 yes, the Pescadero Road Race still happens! It's organized by my club Alto Velo and will take place on June 15 this year, and it's one of the best road races that exists in Northern California
Averaging 30kmh for 7.5hrs - yeah I'd be dead 🥵😂 Looked like a beautiful day for a ride though!
Enjoy Sea Otter! Great video! Talk to the MTB announcer Mike Hecker and have him interview you on the stage! Crowd would love it!
Bonus points for matching jersey with bike
That Artichoke Bread is amazing stuff. Anytime I am within 50 miles of being able to stop and get it I will make the drive.
Welcome to the West Coast. It's pretty special on Highway 1 isn't it?
Amazing road! 👍
At the 9:10 mark, I recognized my old custom road. I’m glad they didn’t scrap the bike and found it a new home.
I suppose a benefit of using a single ring up front with the classified hub is you can run wider tyres than with a traditional 2 x set up ? Great video as usual 👌
It’s going to depend on the specific frame and chainring size. Enve say the Fray can fit 38mm in 2x configuration, and 40mm in 1x configuration.
Super video! I may have missed it... But how much does this bike weigh?
Hey David beautiful riding, I live in the area and haven’t done that route in ages, shame on me. Sea Otter is always fun, enjoy the weekend. Question, why does a one by need a chain keeper? 🤔
Every day a new shirt - and a matching bike too.
Would be great to see a comparison of the Enve Fray and a high end gravel bike like the Colnago c68 gravel.
Amazing to see you do this, where the regular videos are very nice to look at..this from time to time.
Speak for more than myself alone... when I say more of this please..
Thanks, will do!
Flying to San Diego next week to ride my bike there and a couple of days near Santa Barbara as well, so thank you for this appetizer Dave!
Do Gibraltar Rd. When you're in SB, cheers .
@@garysladek9110 We're based in Solvang to do some loops there, dunno if Gibraltar Road is anywhere near. All new roads for me!
@dirkjanengelen8295 The two are not that far apart. If you have a vehicle, you could drive to SB and do the climb. It starts in town. I lived there from '83 to '86 , and rode Gibraltar a lot. Great memories. I hope that you have a wonderful time, wherever you ride. Cheers.
@@garysladek9110 Thanks for the tip! I know I will enjoy riding in sunny California after this Dutch wet Winter and Spring so far.
I loved this video. It embodies everything I love about cycling, the adventure, the bike nerdiness, cool kit, like minded people, fitness. really loved it, thanks David!
i love these new stile of allroad bikes 40c clarence is so nice to have. option to make it to what ever. but the geometry is the king feature. I would see no diference in pace/speed in how i ride, maby faster caus i would feel more comfy on it. Not trying to make my long CAAD12 in to an allroad or any other racebike for that mater. Tho i would still own other bikes to fill in the gaps.
If I’m correct, by using a 1X front and a Classified hub, one ca run 40mm tires on the Fray? Guessing that would be a benefit for Classified hubs, if you need the wider tire for more of an off-road use? Plus, no mud or dirt can jam in the front derailleur. We’ll done on the ride. Bike looks good, except for the Enve price!
Yup true, Fray is only 40mm with no front mech, only 38mm with 2x, so one good benefit of this setup right there, thanks for pointing that out
A trip down memory lane. I lived in San Francisco for 15 years. I used to go for a ride to Marin county over the GG bridge every Sunday with my bike club. What I miss most about CA is the weather and the terrain/landscape. A cyclist paradise. The non-cycling part was less appealing though.
Man I wish the weather in 🇬🇧 was like that
that bike looks rad
Be nice never having chain fall off when changing to small ring under load. Easier to clean the bike with 1x. How easy is it to change wheels with this system?
The classified setup is interesting and I'd be interested if it were possible to easily switch rear wheels to go from 1X EXPLR or EAGLE to 2X classified. I expect there's limits to the differences in chain lengths preventing going between classified and eagle, but wouldn't that be cool if a simple wheel change could take a 1X mullett to a 2X road/gravel in minutes? I'm sure there are technical reasons this doesn't work and why I've never seen someone do it.
How long is that bridge incredible
Hi David, great video! Any chance you could share the gpx file?
How did you really like did you miss the extra chain ring
How much do they measure? 35c measure 35mm?
I guess the classified allows you to get the 40mm clearance (instead of the 38mm) with the 2x road. That's the benefit
Are you going to the Shanghai bike show?
I'm sure I've seen those roads featured on Henry Wildeberry's channel.....
Awesome video and ride? Able to share the route??
got a question about handling, specifically at higher speeds (35mph+); will running, say 35mm tires, compared to say 30mm tires, make this (or any other bike) feel noticeably 'calmer' at high speeds?
trying to decide whether the extra weight of a fatter road tire is worth it on my bike which accepts max 40mm tires (which I'd obviously never run for road riding).
I miss beautiful Cali and the epic riding there.
In my experience it feels like a motorcycle in the turns, very stable. In a straight line I think stability has more to do with head tube angle than the tires.
I'm convinced David Arthur does not sleep! Tomorrow he'll post the review of the bike he rode accross the Atlantic on.. you think I'm joking??😂
😂
Front derailleur $ < Classified Hub $$$$$
Please share the routes you rode!
👍
Come on David, test the litespeed mate
Gosh California looks beautiful. Makes the uk seem very pants.
Which jersey are you wearing?
New Castelli Espresso top and bottom
Weird. I was told California was a hellhole and nobody wants to live there. 😂. Great video.
Perhaps those who rely on Fox News for their world view feel that way the most? Even if you live in the inner part of a "big" city in CA, it's usually pretty easy to get to some fantastic part either inside or outside the city limits. Even then, the inner cities have their beautiful, human dimension to them - you just gotta open your eyes and see the hard-working, sincere, and friendly store clerk, the amazing ethnic restaurant, the warehouse with the microbrewery...
For a one by only bike I see the point in a classified hub,but a two by bike I’m afraid I don’t 👍
Did you get the tacos from the gas station at Pescadero?!?!?!?!?!
Those side barriers are so low.
I understand the need , interest and overall appetite for all road, do it all bikes but there is no future for them, after a while they turn into an old BMW air cooled motorcycle, smart design and engineering, great performance, comfort, longevity, does everything well, hard to fault and impossible to love. There is a reason why geometry plays such a big role in the industry, there is no substitute for dedicate, specialized bikes, had the all road bikes been true than there is no better bike than Ritchey Swiss Cross. That bike is the gold standerd for do it all from the past, a bike that reshaped the industry .
With roads like that they should be fine on 25c, I propose they send all the 35c bikes over to the uK where the roads are more like cart tracks.
I too have a hard time watching this Corporate promo events , nothing against Enve or their guests but call me skeptical, what is the message at the end? How am I closer to drop $5k for a frame that is good for a lot and excels at nothing?
What a load of nonsense; most people would benefit from riding All Road bikes.....
Tom Ritchey territory..🚴🚴♂🚴♀
or Eric Wohlberg ..
Why does everyone promote SRAM road groupsets? The hydraulic disc breaks suck.
looks like you can get bigger then a 40 in there
bromace alert
It may be a great bike, but it just looks like every other cookie cutter out there. A more imaginative paint scheme would go a long way to help it out. And with the classified 2 speed hub, can you really say it is a 1 by?
San Fransicko? Check your bike for human poop!
Not useful.
Costs too much and is an old idea. Why don’t they just put it in the bottom bracket and get rid of the cassette. It’s called a transmission.
