Kav should send their helmets to Virginia Tech to get independently tested. I can't speak for others here, but I'm at the point where I won't buy a helmet unless I see how they rate it on safety.
exactly what I was thinking, I have heard it a million times 'our helmet is safe!'. A good example is MIPS vs wavecell, the MIPS is safer but is the cheaper version. Also, 3D printing... it isnt for manufacturing, I personally wouldnt wear a helmet thats 3d printed.
@@masonerkelens7176 Yep 3d printing just makes the material weaker, which can theoretically make the crumble zone as she said, but its really bold claim. And also comparing PC and ABS as new and better material vs old and worse one is just pure nonsense.
When you make or sell a helmet in the USA, you have it evaluated to see if it meets CPSC standards. Kav says their helmets are CSPC compliant. You can look up what impact and other standards are by searching Bicylce Helmets CPSCdotgov
I even send my food off for testing before I buy it, you can't be too safe. They may say it's potatoes they're selling you but it has been known for it to be flour in disguise or even a cabbage 😏
@@bengt_axle i'm not doubting that their helmets are safe. It's a question of *how* safe especially when compared to other helmets. VA tech's lab is so valuable because its a standard, independent testing procedure for ALL helmets. That way you can directly compare the products from various brands to see which is the safest
The helmet is cool, but it still looks very 3D printed. I hope that they are looking towards finishing techniques because if I saw one in the wild I'd assume it was a prototype. Also do you own the print file? It would be cool to print out your own helmet.
I was immediatly thinking about adjustability. Like what do you do, if it's winter, and you want to wear a hat underneath. Guess it's not a biggie for California.
@MrDuLukes I have thick hair. As soon as I go to the hairdresser, I have to adjust the size of my helmet 😂. Definitely a cool concept though, and I don't doubt they'll find a solution for this.
@@Tobias611 The pads and springs inside the helmet have 4-5mm of movement in them so it's not a problem when you change your hairstyle, get a haircut, or wear a cycling beanie or cap in the winter/ summer and the helmet will still fit you. The pads are basically auto-adjusting without the need for a retention system. Happy to answer any other questions!
@Lucy Mannall that's awesome! I can't wait for it to be available in Germany then, Francis got lucky with his U.S. visit! Do you already use alcohol fumes to make the 3d print smoother?
We love a good bikepacking vlog, Francis! You should come back to the US in late July and ride the 50th anniversary Ragbrai ride. It's a 7 day ride across the state of Iowa. Thousands of people do it every year. Cheers!
If I had known I might have delayed my trip to Iowa-my daughter lives in Des Moines and I am going over to visit her and my grandchildren, then on to visit a friend in Bozeman Montana, then Yellowstone and home.
I dont know man paying 320 dollars for PC 3d print with insanely bad finishing is just crazy to me. Plus having all these claims on their site without real testing and spilling so much nonsense that ABS is worse PC is just no go for me. Plus 3d printing something that should take impact from different sides is a bit weird, beacuse you have decent mechanical properties in one direction, but much much worse in the other, so basically if you land on the helmet in different direction, other than the intended one it will crack and crumble super easily. So what exactly are you getting better for that insane price?
No testing, hard to trust... Remember what happened to the carbon made submarine that exploded exploring Titanic? They refused to submit themselves for safety testing... Foam is not "old" technology, it's tried and true... My helmet saved my head, and it's made of foam during the last crash...
This looks pretty neat. However without independent crash testing, I'm not sure I would trust these helmets with the safety of my brain. Yes they exceed the standards, but if you dig into the standards, you'll find that they are not really ideal based on what we know today. The only way we as consumers can truly judge the safety of a helmet is by crash test data. Release the data please!
Maybe im old school but having had a look at the KAV helmet I still think EPS foam is better than crumple zones... Upon any sort of impact it will provide more cushion. A 3D printed helmet without any foam would probably leave me in tears if I was to accidently drop it. It boils down to the KAV being just another layer that your head needs to slam though if you ever hit something. Dont get me wrong. Crumple zones will probably help, but at the end of the day thats still a fairly hard plastic that can cause other issues when/if it cracks and leaves jagged edges.
Been researching bike helmets for my next one and there is tons of options out there ranging from SPIN to Wavecell to MIPs to loads of other options beyond the mips or no mips debate that is heavily popularized. There are still loads of other factors of consideration such as which safety features do you prefer for testing to price to looks to ventilation to fit to other options which makes it hard to ultimately decide on a certain helmet.
Don't fuss about, get an HJC, they come from competition motorsports, what more could you want from a helmet company ? They know their stuff. They're also the only helmets company in the world that actually own a proper wind tunnel facility AAAAND cause that's the rarest thing in the bike industry, their engineers are worthy to be called as such. They don't need to give you a shittown of unnecessary crap technonames "à la Zipp", when they tell you it' aero, it just is.
Yep, me too...helmet manufacturers really p*ss me off, they should all include anti-insect mesh and if the weight weenies want to save 2g they can cut it out surely? This time of year I put away my decent Giro helmet and dig out my (reduced) £2.99 LIDL helmet that's 14 years old and has insect mesh.... I can't find any decent helmet that's fitted with mesh these days..... (I got one of those "grip grab" mesh nets to go over the Giro and they just look shit and don't stay in place, and the mesh is too fine to allow air through unlike bee/wasp/fly sized mesh!!)

king city is actually famous in california at least for a speed trap. speed trap = in the us and a in nearly all places, police, either state or local, enforce speed laws. this is how they afford all the officers! so, the state police in california, aka "california highway patrol" (aka chp), run a speed trap on highway us-101 where the speed limit dips and make lots of american dollars. nearly every time i've ever passed through i've seen chp fining a driver on us-101. i don't believe bikes or pedestrians are allowed on that section on us-101.
