Tour around Handsworth Sheffield reset like everywhere else

- Once a village on the edge of Sheffield and now part of the sprawl. Like most places the soul has been eradicated. Both may grandparents came from there, so I had happy memories of it.
Nostalgic for me used to drive along here , parents lived in the area

I loved growing up in handsworth I lived on Richmond park rd but I left 15yr ago, it's sad to see how much its changed when I visit family they have built over alot of my childhood memories .. Great video you had my brains rattling trying to remember the Name of Crosskeys pub 😂
Both my grandparents lived there from marrying. It seemed a much classier placed in the past.
Yes it was Turners News Tim. They supplied all the GT News Shops. I had a part time job there when my son was young. The driving test centre where I took my test(s) was across the road on an industrial estate. There used to be a little shop on the main road near the bowling alley somewhere where I used to go to buy art supplies. The Asda used to be on that road that goes to Catcliffe. Haven't things changed!.
Thanks for filling in the blanks Myra forgot about GT news shops. I liked the Asda on the Orgreave trading estate, but hated this new one. Not the Handsworth I loved anymore.
With its double deck tram network Sheffield had a wonderful public transport system. All gone now. One wonders who removed it and why ?
Vested interests, happened under Beecham with the railways.
Yeah we could get everything just between the shops at fishponds Richmond and the Woodthorpe shops. Now you can not. That was the newsagents on the corner. I remember the the remploy as well. Some majorities there mate.
Changed a lot…..lived on Handsworth Grange Rd for many years and went to Athelstan school.
Parents and grandparents lived on Handsworth Rd and Athelstan Rd.
There used to be a proper butchers with a dummy stood outside about 11:40, it kept going despite Asda but when they opened Lidl it shut.
Up Richmond rd on the right there is some fabulous stone gateposts, I don't know if they have pineapples on top. Its the entrance to some modern council type flats, but must have been a big manor house.
The kitchen place used to sell old stock, so if you needed to match up or add a unit, they had them in, I went there probably about year 2000.
Shutters on shops, like Staniforth rd, the other team buy these commercial units at auction, when the English owners retire and the offspring don't want to take it on, they stick a shutter on it and never open it.
Staniforth road used to have loads of pubs and corner shops didn't it?
When you go under the Parkway from Asda towards Darnall, immediately on your right, you've got the backs of those houses on that estate, I don't know what it's called, all those garages with off-road parking, the backs to those houses are massive, then across the road, past the shops, there's a row of lovely Victorian houses, I think there is one left with all its original leaded windows, might be painted dark green.
I'm going to have a walk up from Darnall and have a nosy!
@@timawells used to be everything, banks, pubs, shops. The other team have took over and they don't use banks or pubs! I can remember shopping on Staniforth rd and going in the Halifax etc.
I think Darnell Fisheries chippy is the only thing worth visiting now!

YES! They continued to make things worst! I've watched its declined since the 60s. I used to love it when I was a boy and young man. When I left, I retained my love of it and got sadder and sadder at its decline. Its decline is not just the decline of other city centres. Sheffield was given over to roads not people1
It used to be so nice when I came to my Grandparents Saturday and Sunday. They lived at opposite ends of Handsworth. Moore and Rights looked classy with the roundabout where the parkway now is and beautiful flower beds on it. Lovely Christmas decorations in the houses all the way down to my grandparents at Darnall.

It makes me think that youtube does strange thinks. I have a video of the Canal basin and canal to Darnall to upload, you should find that interesting.
@@timawells I will have a look through its nostalgic to me. Also I am seeing what has changed I was there as I said but didnt go and travel around the city much.

@@timawells Mary Queen of Scots, handsworth tunnel, Benjamin Huntsman , cross keys behing one of 2 public houses in uk to stand in a Graveyard and many former significant buildings.
@@user-ig5ol4oh4c I thought I mentioned ghosts in the Cross Keys which is now called the Chancery. But my main purpose was to show the destruction of community since I was born in 1964 and Christened at St Marys. The Parkway was rammed through what my Grandad said was Sherwood Forest and now Asda blights the centre of Handsworth, not Moore and Wright where I went to Christmas parties.
