I still live here not too bad nice enough place to go for a walk
I lived in Handsworth between 1981 and 1997 when we moved to Australia. The majority hasn't changed that much but from the car yard (which used to be Peugeot my mum was a valator there) on the left hand side is all new. I can only remember big old factory buildings
Thank you so much for putting this video up. My wife and I celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary on 4th July. We were married in St Marys Church in 1970, then came to Australia in 1974 We planned to be back in Handsworth this coming weekend from Sydney, but have had to cancel because of COVID-19. Thanks for the opportunity to help re-live that special day, by seeing your video. Also love your other videos.
Thank you so much! Sorry I missed the chance to wish you happy anniversary so please accept my belated one!
Wow! My mum used to put me on a tram to go to Grandad in Handsworth in 1950 for a sleepover. It is just before we left for Australia. How lovely to see . Thank you
You're welcome thank you for watching our Sheffield Videos Channel!
I love old cinema spotting. They're all over the place. I'll have to check that one out.
I'll do more videos on that!
@@SheffieldVideos you can usually recognise the construction of the building eg centre of Chapeltown
@@antonyware9887 True! Usually supermarkets now!
@@SheffieldVideos or snooker halls. The one at Sheffield Lane Top is a carpet showroom
Briliant video. I spent the first 17 years of my life in Handsworth and it hasn't changed too much. The shops are still there but no longer family businesses - there used to be three very good butchers shops but they disappeared when Asda moved location and Aldi was built. It's a shame that two of my favourite pubs - The Turf Tavern and The Norfolk Arms ceased trading. Initial laundry, Remploy Goodyer's and the printing factory have all gone - three of them on the side where The Sword Dancer and Aldi are now. Sean (Shaun) Bean lived about 5 or 6 houses down from me on Retford Road and was in the year above me at Brook School (now a small housing estate).
Remploy - that's what I was trying to remember! Thank you Nick!!
I was born in Handsworth in 1949, and Handsworth Church at the start of the programme was where my brother and I were baptized and my mum and dad were married. I remember the Vicar, Mr. Ferraby. I was born on Halesworth Road. Sean Bean lived on Old Retford Road, about eight houses from the one we bought in 1956. Our family moved to Australia in the 1960's, but I've been back several times, and came back to live for four years in 1972. Thank you for this wonderful trip down memory lane.
My grandparents, dad and great uncle lived on Halesworth Road around that time
I lived in Hans worth late 70s
But just down from main road
Hi. Great videos BTW.
I was born in Sheffield left to live down South in 87 then have been travelling the globe since 2016 currently in Varna Bulgaria, love to see my old city even though its changed so much. Can you walk from Hunters bar up to banner Cross then up Greystones rd to Bingham Park or there abouts. That would bring so many memories back, also Whirlow Park up until to 1970s this Park was amazing I believe now it's run down and a shadow of its former self. Interesting topic for you especially as it was donated in 1890s I believe and the council have failed in maintaining its donations. Such a shame
8:09 when "I were a lad" used to be a tiny electrical shop. Was only maybe 6ft wide. Remember the shop owner in his long white coat like a lab worker!
Good to see Roger's barbers still going, thought he must have retired years ago...
Ahh shame the electrical shop has gone - I'd have loved to see that!
I believe it was called Cork and Green
Awesome, one of my old haunts, pre and post leaving school (85), i hung around the Oakhouse and Triangle chippies for a couple of years, see the old shop where the beer off was is all boarded up, used to have a skinhead mate lived in the turf tavern, had a big union flag on his bedroom wall
Ahh the old skinheads and mods and rockers! Sheffield had plenty of those at one point!
@@SheffieldVideosDont i know it :)
I lived here til I was 18. Some facts: The Crown was called 'The Low Drop' by locals . The Cross Keys is the only English pub in a grave Yard. Part of it is 13th century and there is supposedly a tunnel from the beer cellar to the Church next door. Its also Haunted tee hee.
Fabulous video as usual, love all the stone properties and hope they do not get pulled down I remember the Asda opening late 1960s we used to take our big TIR removal van with our four kids and we used to pack all the groceries etc in the big tea chests we used to packing china etc Thanks for the memories The big blue buses are super looking wish we had public transport where I live, buses are only in the small town of Lindsay in the our rural City of Kawartha Lakes 90 mind N of Toronto ... I love how old people in your video walk so well and fast especially that lady who crossed the main road I am super grateful of the time you spend I share your videos on Pinterest on Ann Wardley #2 re Sheffield I hope that is OK Cheers Ann You are doing super well for Ex pats ps we left Sheffield ie 1972 because of the endless dock strikes and building trade strikes.
THank you so much Ann - that's lovely to hear. I"ll keep going whilst people want me to!
Bit further down the road on the left is Richmond Park Road, used to live there..
Richmond Park Road - Yes!! That's what I was trying to remember! My great grandmother lived on there!
Love watching your videos would be nice to see Rotherham Clifton area Clifton park
Great suggestion!
There is a blue plaque for Benjamin Huntsman, on a house opposite the entrance to ASDA. The ASDA site used to be the Moore & Wright factory and offices (later taken over by James Neill.
Where Motor Depot is used to be Initial Towel Co and Grays Printers. The area where The Sword Dancer, McDonald's and Aldi are located used to be Remploy.
Going back even further in time I believe there was a plant nursery covering quite a large area on that side of the road, memory is hazy but the name Fisher comes to mind (think there were a couple of other names in there too).
Fantastic info thank you Peter!
I think it's the James Neill building that I remember
I think the carpet place used to do kitchens. The Plaza cinema used to host the occasional pop concert. I saw Gene Vincent there circa 1964.
Wow - I'm jealous - I bet that was incredible!
Very interesting. I don’t really know Handsworth but it is obviously a very old and original part of the city of Sheffield.
Yeah lots of history in Handsworth!
Remploy, and i think a big factory used to be where maccy Ds and asda are?
That's it yeah! Thank you
Love this, would be great if you did Beighton too.
Lots of History around the village
We definitely will be doing that - stay tuned!
Interesting place you did a good job describing it only place i have been to there is Asda can you do lowedges Greenhill village
Absolutely! Thank you so much for watching our channel!
in that big nice house across from maccies is my mates house and his mum ownes the law place next to it
Nice! Great house!
Would love to see broom hill?!
On the list! We'll do that for you no problem!
I have asked too to see Broomhill and Crosspool. We just have to be patient until they get to the other side of Sheffield
Would love to see woodhouse, maybe beighton?
Woodhouse already on the list - have just added Beighton for you! Thank you!
@@SheffieldVideos Woodhose please, few nice old builing. dont forget the Quakers meeting house, Parish church and cemetery on Stradbrook rd
1:34 the limo belongs to the garage across the road
Ah! I thought it might have been the same people who owned the grass van
Why all these shops are closed?
Lockdown
Didnt the oakhouse chippy have a graffiti piece on the right hand side wall at one point?
I don't know Handsworth that well - hopefully another of our subscribers/viewers can clarify this one!
It did but it got cleaned a while back
Yes it did, was done very early 90s from a group of local teenagers (at the time) who all attended Brook secondary school (now a housing estate) lived in handsworth all my life and back then it was the coolest thing ever, the render started to fall away so unfortunately it is no more.
Also the graffiti was of bomb Jack a computer game back in the 80s
To the person that makes these videos, how and why did you get into this ?
Just to create an archive of videos to show my kids when they're older so they can see what Sheffield was like in this era!
Do Stradbroke
Will do - have added to the list 👍
Here is a good link for your new Broomhill walk re the Mount in Broomhill and info about Walshes Their fabulous carriage trade store was destroyed in the blitz of WW2 Plus there is a map on the link showing a possible Drive or Walk from Hunters Bar for another video en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mount,_Sheffield Cheers Ann ex pat
Ah thank you - that lookos perfect!
That traffic sounds vile.
How do you mean Margaret?
do you mean, a lot of it? its a very busy area, as sheff videos mentioned its got the parkway cutting right through the middle of it
The traffic is vile it's constant
9:41 the Christian school was knocked down in 2017-2018
Ah no! I messed up on that one - I couldn't see over the wall!
