- Join us for episode 8 as we follow on from our last video and explore the abandoned Ski Village in Sheffield. This place once attracted thousands of people, but after a series of disastrous fires, the site now sits abandoned.
The site was used as a filming location for the 2023 Full Monty series on Disney+
With thanks to Picture Sheffield and their contributors (Destination Sheffield) for the photos.

Fantastic video pal , absolutely loved the ski village back in the day was up there all the time , very sad to see it now as it had so much potential sad loss bit like the pinegrove country club , keep up the great work 👊
Thankyou my friend! Glad you enjoyed
I grew up in park wood springs it was awesome heartbreaking to see what it has become😢
Very sad indeed
So sad but good video mate
Thankyou! Cheers for watching!
Wowzer, I learned to ski there, paid for a course of lessons every Sunday afternoon, it was a fabulous place back in the day. I couldn’t believe how easier it is to ski on snow than on the dry slopes! If you can ski on a dry slope you can ski on anything! lol
I skied there a few times early 90s iirc. Fun place, a shame it's gone.
Very sad that vandalism is so destructive. What sort of morons do this. I never visited to ski but the secretary of our Manchester climbing club was a keen and expert skier. In fact there were a number of qualified ski instructors in our climbing club. The previously mentioned club secretary invited the manufacturer and supplier of the ski slope matting to our club one evening to show a film of the early phase of one of the ski runs. A number of expert skiers did demo runs and because of water running down the plastic mat and pooling in the holes, this sprayed up and at low angle filming, looked like powder snow spraying up from the skis. At the time I saw the film, the later buildings and expanded ski slopes and toboggan runs did not exist until some years later. The vandalism has only taken place it would seem not too long after we left the UK. The problem we have locally now where we live in the alps is a lack of snow on our ski resorts. This winter has been too warm and snow fall on the mountains below 1800 metres is not lasting and not freezing cold enough to spray with the snow cannons. At one time years ago the Peak District hills between Manchester and Sheffield would have been feet deep in snow every winter with road passes over the Pennine moors impassable to motor traffic.
You came up in my suggested at random, love your channel. Keep it up!
Aw Thankyou! Thanks for watching, it’s very much appreciated! hope to have you with us as the journey continues!
Great video. Used to love this place.
The fires begun after the company applied to build a housing estate at the top of the hill. The owners wanted to make money by building homes. Couldn't get approval then massively under invested in the site to a point where it got burnt down.
was two teenagers what set fire to the building they was arrested days after
I have a story or two I could tell about that Ski Village, but I will keep quiet, as I don't want the possibility of being sued.
I'll say it.
Blatant insurance job.
Great video.. I think another problem was the only way to the park was under a low rail bridge so buses couldn't get to it
Nice one shagr. Random appearance on my feed. Lots of decay in the steel city. How bout a vid on shef airport ??
I live very close to the old airport. Someone did a video not too long ago on the airport so it’s not on my radar at the moment, but as parts of it decay further over the next few years it’s probably something I’ll do so it’s different to the videos already on UA-cam
The really steep bank is a braking bank for the t-bar lift. You are supposed to feed the t-bar back slowly as it passes the bull wheel, but a lot of self taught skiers or those who learned in non t-bar alpine resorts often do not realise this and let go of it like it's a far lighter (and more common) button lift. A steep bank or hobby horse type contraption is sometimes used to make this less dangerous, as on impact it will stop the t-bar swinging around and hitting the next departing skiers in the face.
Proper interesting vid joe
Why is everyone bloody setting fire to ski village 😂😂
@@crane_0114 I also am curious as to why so many attempts to destroy by fire???
Love your content pal! Keep it up! wondering whether you can do a video on old Sheffield Nightclubs then and now? Similar to the cinema one you did on 01142 channel
Thankyou my friend, appreciated
I’ll see what I can do.
Proper miss ski village... Can't beat going somewhere what has it's own accident form at children's 😂😂.
Great video mate, shame it kept setting itself on fire
Thanks for watching! Appreciated
That was great - I often wondered what happened to the ski village. I have no memory of the fire… it just seemed to go bust and disappear.
Cheers for watching 👍
11:10 I can see my house!
Build a mtb park Be awesome
You should do a vid of wardsend cemetery. It’s a secret cemetery at the back of the dog track. Very interesting place and also a few open graves that have opened up from roots overgrown from the trees. I always wonder why they don’t look after it. Check it out.
Walked through wardsend cemetery many times. Used to live in S5 so fairly local. Will deffo add it to the list! Possibly a Halloween special video!
Went there about 2010 really cool and interesting place
Wow. I remember going down there on my ass. Top video!
I live close to Sheffield and never knew of this place. Why would anyone want to destroy a place like this?
Insurance job for a failing business.
Thank you for the reply. I can't see with so many enjoying using the ski park that it would have failing results. Disappointing with so many fire attacks.@@TwoFingeredMamma

@@danielwilliams1932It was profitable until Xscape opened at Castleford and then they needed open air music events to keep in the black. The local NIMBYS put the brakes on the open air events a year or so after Xscapes opening and then they struggled to break even until they finally closed a decade or so later.
I agree I lived arson did it just saying
Do you fancy going to explore the cannon brewery
Hmmmmm. Possibly. The whole point of this channel was to differentiate it from my other channel (History 0114) which was Sheffield focussed, so I don’t want to over do Sheffield based things, maybe next year!
@@tourobscure okay mate keep me posted.
Such a shame that Sheffield is such a dump and a dead city with nothing going for it
Ive never been to the ski village nor would I want to but its a great unique thing and seems lots of people have fond memories of it
Such a shame it's on the state it is
