  • @mdhazeldine

    As others have said, this was probably the greatest sitcom the UK ever produced, but it doesn't do that well in the U.S. because the comedy is quite a lot about British culture and is a definite character comedy show. Yes there are really funny clips, but it's 200% funnier once you know the characters, their relationships, their story and their catchphrases. I think you're at the point now where you've probably watched enough British comedy that it wouldn't totally go over your head, but if you know anything about the history of Britain in the 1970s and 80s, it'll also really help with context. This was written in the era of Margaret Thatcher, miner's strikes and yuppies. It also helps if you have a clue about the East end of London and cockneys, which is essentially what they are, although the show itself can teach you quite a lot about it if you start from the beginning and watch it through.

    • @rnw2739

      Almost..... That accolade goes to 'Steptoe and Son' and the amount of plot/jokes John Sullivan 'borrowed' for OFAH is unbelievable.
      'Steptoe and Son' was Sullivans favourite sitcom and said without it, there wouldn't have been OFAH.
      Steptoe ran for eight series and had two feature films and the similarities between them is staggering. The biggest and most blatant evidence is the episode of Steptoe and Son called 'Full House'.
      Watch that then watch the OFAH episode 'A Losing Streak' where Del tucks Boycie up at cards...it is a virtual carbon copy of the Steptoe episode.
      I don't take anything away from Sullivans writing but it is disingenuous to not credit the writers who had the actual ideas originally.

      Yes, - when Rodney joins "the Groovy gang" and Rachel sings Roy Orbison's "Cwying!! I also love the Jolly Boys' Outing episode, as well as many others, but I think it ultimately went on slightly too long. It should have ended when they sold the watch and walked off into the sunset having finally become millionaires. The should have ended it there. Many of us grew up with this series. I recall I liked it from the start, even though it wasn't a hit initially - thank God the BBC (which was good back then) stuck with it. Of course many of our close family that we enjoyed it with are now no longer with us - which is another reason why this sitcome brings backa warm glow to our hearts/memories when we remember back to those happy days.

    This is the greatest British comedy of all time.
    Choosing your own clip was not the greatest idea.
    Only fools and horses as so many iconic moments that is just still hilarious after 30 odd years.
    My favorite is the Batman and Robin episode but there's context needed.
    The Chandelier
    Del boy falls

    Triggers broom
    So so much more.
    Only fools and horses is the nations favourite over inbetweeners.

    Only fools and horses isn’t really a show you can watch just 1 or 2 and find funny, it has a lot of humour that is relatable but it was going for years and you really need to watch a lot of them and really get to know the characters and what there lives are like. It’s not really that exaggerated as there are many people who live just like this in the uk and instead of choosing a 9-5 job strive for something better and to make it big, whilst not being a complete criminal Del Boy chooses to turn a blink eye to where his “stock” comes from. It’s the kind of show that makes you compare characters to people in your own life and there similarities. By far my favourite show who’s characters are played so well I consider them real people. I think a lot of brits would say they share a close connection with Del Boy and Rodney whilst having never met them. It was cast perfectly and the comedy is witty, not always obvious and very British.

  • @HolloVVpoint
    @HolloVVpoint 2 роки тому +6

    There’s a difference between British and American humour. Not that one is smarter than the other or better, both are funny but British humour is more focused on the dialogue. So to get the best out of any show got to pay really close attention to what’s being said more so than the physical comedy. That goes for anything from Blackadder to Peep Show and the Inbetweeners, the real gems are in the little conversations and the banter.

    • @josephgirgis6735
      @josephgirgis6735 2 роки тому +2

      Hmmm... not sure on this one. Plenty of classic American sitcoms are full of clever funny dialogue almost one dimensionally so. British sitcoms have great dialogue but sooo much more...

    • @kwesiidun8512
      @kwesiidun8512 Рік тому

      HolloVVpoint - You make a good point, but I'd debate that British humour is more dialogue-based. Visual comedy works with our humour as well, otherwise Are You Being Served, Fawlty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances and Mr Bean would never have been sold around the world and been successful around the world, particularly in the United States.
      I think one of the biggest differences between our humour and American humour is in characterisation and what happens to them throughout. We love to see people not succeed. Fawlty Towers was hilarious because everything kept going wrong for Basil. If it had been a hotel which ran smoothly, there'd have been no comedy. Del and Rodney Trotter rarely succeeded in their money-making schemes. If they did every time, again there'd be no comedy.
      Also think about all the hapless or downtrodden characters in our comedies. Rodney in Only Fools and Horses, Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave, Ben Harper in My Family, Richard Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances, etc. The only US comedy character who I can think of who was hapless is Stuart Bloom from The Big Bang Theory. As a society we don't have the positivity which the USA has, hence why nearly none of their comedy characters are hapless.
      Speaking of society, we're still a country with a class system, so Only Fools and Horses is an example of a comedy of the ambitions of the working man to become rich. The US doesn't have the same culture when it comes to social status, so they wouldn't understand why Del and Rodney are constantly wanting to better their lives. Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances is a character who was originally from a working-class background which she tried to keep secret and always unsuccessfully, but she was already married to a middle-class man and lived a middle-class lifestyle. The hilarity of it for us in the UK was the constant jeopardy of her origins being exposed by her dad, sisters and brother-in-law always turning up to the house and everybody knowing a woman like her and the visual comedy and wanting her to succeed would have been what they found funny in the USA and some other countries. If the programme had been Hyacinth being a much younger woman from a working-class family who was trying to better herself and the plot was her trying and failing to marry someone a class above her - so basically a prequel to what Keeping Up Appearances actually was - it wouldn't have been even a quarter as big around the world as it was because the joke would have been lost on them.

    Your Majesty cannot expect to react with any seriousness to less than 4 mins of the greatest sitcom ever produced for British TV, (notwithstanding Fawlty Towers, of course). It stars one of our greatest comic actors, David Jason, too! On a par with Ronnie Barker and John Cleese. In fact, If you really investigated British sitcom, you'd find Ronnie and David on the same stage together in 'Porridge' and 'Open all hours.' Be well. Be happy. 🙂🙏🙂

    A lot of people grew up with this show on British TV back in the 80's and 90's. It's very British so it probably wouldn't appeal to a non-Brit. Obviously Brits would relate to it more. There are 64 episodes so it would keep your channel busy.

    Only Fools and Horses is the best comedy we've ever had in the UK. It never had that much of a global following (apart from in the Balkans, strangely) because its comedic value is in the wordplay and characterisations rather than its visuals. This scene is a prime example.
    It contains a lot of typically British phrases and sayings (e.g. "bird"/"that little sort" for a female) and a lot of things that seem strange out of context. In the early series' of Only Fools and Horses, there were lots of mentions of Rodney being expelled from an "Art College in Basingstoke" after being caught smoking cannabis and for being a bit of a lothario, particularly with teenage girls - hence Del's quip "He's in love with someone who's got the vote this time!"
    Also knowing the relationship between Derek (Del) and Rodney as brothers and Edward as their grandfather and them as characters also helps, which is why watching the occasional clip isn't the best. It's better to watch full episodes so that the less visual scenes are just as funny and make more sense.
    Scenes such as the chandelier from 'A Touch of Glass', the bar from 'Yuppy Love', the dolls from 'Danger UXD' or the superheroes one from 'Time on Our Hands' are funnier to non-British reactors because they're visual and visual comedy is universal. Even with the 'Time on Our Hands' one even if someone from outside the British Isles doesn't find it visually funny, it also happens to be situational which adds to the hilarity.
    They're much better scenes to react to if you're not watching entire episodes!

    In my humble opininion... I think you would love full episodes and the whole series. You would be a great follow up from Josh. He's approaching the end.

    Big love from Spain.

    The two clips from this show which are reacted to a lot are 'Del boy falls though bar' and 'The chandelier scene', both hilarious, like fall off your chair hilarious. you'd be in bits; this clip is more of a mild chuckle in comparison.

    Del and Rodney stuck in a Lift/Elevator.
    Del and Rodney became Millionaires.
    This excellent and very funny Tv Sitcom was written by an excellent writer of sitcoms called John Sullivan.

    You have to watch all the episodes starting from the first one to understand all the characters. That's when you can really appreciate the comedy.

    The problem with youtube is you don't get the full episodes. With OFAH the episodes build around a theme and feed back to jokes earlier in the episode. Only experiencing a full episode do you get the full effect.

    There are way better ones! Watch the chandelier clip, or the whole episode which is A Touch of Glass. There’s also the bar scene in Yuppy Love, I don’t want to give the joke away but I’m sure you’ll find it. The Sky’s the Limit is also a very funny episode, as are Heroes and Villains, Stage Fright, and the final one (or should have been) Time on our Hands

    Every episode of Fools and Horses has different furniture in their flat highlighting that Rodney is always buying and selling (stolen?) goods. In one episode they are eating at a metal garden table and chairs set.
