I was the dubbing mixer/re-recording mixer who worked on this film sequence (all the exterior/location scenes were shot on film and then played to the live audience during the studio recording of the final episode). He was really good at set-ups. I was surprised to discover that 'Trigger's Broom', was actually a re-use of a joke in 'Open All Hours'. But the set-up in 'Open All Hours' was way too brief. If I remember correctly he even used the same number of heads and handles, which was I think a way of showing people that he wasn't trying to hide the fact that it was taken from 'Open All Hours'. I'm going to make an educated guess that he asked the writer of 'Open All Hours' if he could re-use it and give it the proper build-up that it deserved.
I looked at the video title and thought, it says what's gonna happen in the video they're gonna smash the chandelier, surely you guys can expect what's coming, they should've just called it "chandelier" and held the suspense, but even with you knowing what was going to happen, the WAY in which it happened caught you guys so off guard. Like some has really said, this was based on a real event. It was something that the writer's father told him about. He wasn't initially pleased that John Sullivan wanted to use it in one of his scripts. Has he thought it was a serious matter, people had lost their jobs over the real accient. But once he saw it play out in the episode, he later amitted it was actually hilarious. The funniest things often have a grain of truth to them.
I was once working a mansion in Cheshire and was told a true story, that a maid who once worked there used to get a ladder to dust the chandelier, but she got lazy and would sneakily turn the chandelier a little each time rather than move the ladder around, eventually . . . .
Guys...that is by far the best reaction to this I've seen so far. so much fun to see you both get side-swiped by this...and so did all us Brits at the time:). Both Nick Lyndhurst (Rodney) & David Jason (Del) were indeed threatened with being fired if they messed it up & they both had to remain in-character for an agonising 30 seconds or so after the 'drop'. You have to get into this show, it'll have you laughing your socks off. For a different kind of laugh, try any part featuring Trigger, the character is just gold. Especially fun are Triggers Broom & 'You put some music on Dave?'. And 'Dave' - Trigger constantly gets Rodney's name wrong - is probably one of the longest running gags in TV history.

This genuinely happened to the writer of the show's uncle except, it was in a shop, his father fell out with him for using it in the show, but when he watched it, he phoned him laughing and told him he was right to use it!
The chandelier incident is based on truth. It happened to the writer's dad. He wasn't initially happy about it being on the show but, after it aired he saw the funny side.

Glad you liked it. It’s my favourite episode, the chandelier cost £6,000 and they only had one. Del and Rodney had to look at each other for 30sec after the drop. Not only is this a great episode but a great back story
The whole episode built up to this iconic scene, the prop was supposed to be a Louis XIV (1638 - 1715) French crystal chandelier (and cost £6,000 to have this replica made in 1982). The actors were warned ahead of filming that they could only film it dropping once, any break of laughter would ruin the episode and as the series (season) would be one episode short would also ruin the series. Ray Butt the producer said he would fire them on the spot.
Enjoyed listening to you guys gibbling on about light fittings you’ve known and loved, but I knew what was coming. You didn’t. Absolutely excellent reaction 👌😂 x
Their writer and creator John Sullivan was just a unique writer. He was so good at writing comedy and he was there when they filmed it, he is very much missed. He died in 2011
Apparently this was based on a true story. The writers dad had relayed the story to his son. He had been working in a mansion fitting new heating system and the chandelier had to be removed to protect it whilst the new pipes were placed. He was up a ladder with a workmate when a third workmate did what grandad did. Cost 6 men their job during the depression!
I remember watching this with my Mum and Dad when it was first broadcast on British TV. Only Fools and Horses was the highlight of the week in those times. When we watched this episode Mum, Dad and myself laughed so much we were almost wetting ourselves, we just couldn't stop laughing , we were in hysterics. It still makes me laugh now after watching it numerous times over the years. All the cast were great actors, they made ONF&H one of the most funniest British TV comedies of all time.
Loved this reaction. Everyone here knows this episode, its a classic, so it’s amazing seeing people react exactly how the nation did all them years ago.
Like most Brits I grew up watching Only Fools and Horses among many other unforgettably comedy shows, the jokes never get old and you can't help but laugh at their reactions to the "accident" the actors are incredibly talented, absolute comedy legends in their own right, this goes for The Two Ronnies, Father Ted, Dads Army, Allo Allo, Morecambe and Wise and Benny Hill, there are so many more that the list would be far to long to write on here, anyone who doesn't understand our British humor should definitely watch more British comedy shows like these, you will soon realize that we are not opposed to laughing at ourselves or stupid situations, so don't take it personally, these shows are absolutely legendary in our culture, David Jason (Del) is 82 years old now, I wish they would do one more final episode before David Jason retires from acting altogether. Thanks for reacting

I worked with a carpenter in Leicestershire in the 90's that was tasked with removing the old nails from the joists in the attic ready to be boarded over and he did this very same thing! Wasn't expecting a chandelier to be hanging by a 6 inch nail. It cost £1600 to replace it 😊

The writer of only fools and horses, John Sullivan was told this true story by his father, John laughed, but his father was horrified as 7 men lost there job that day, but when he saw the episode he rang John and said alright, it is funny 🤣
Only fools and horses is hysterical
Honestly guys you should watch the entire series.🤣
Omg, my favourite reaction ever. This scene always makes me laugh but you two made me laugh even harder. 🤣
you could imagine the same sketch done by laurel and hardy in 1920 or sth . it's pure classic , everyone is completely led up the garden path/misdirected to the wrong chandelier
Arguably the greatest moment in British comedy ....sorry is the greatest moment in British comedy
Greatest comedy series ever. Each episode was funny and original.
John Sullivan, God Bless You, wherever you are. You were taken at the too young age of 63. You have given so many so many hours of laughter!
this is what makes me proud to be British our comedy shows like this one becomes a classic and this is right up there with all the great comedy's of all time. Spencer and Daniel when you have recovered please do the reaction to only fools and horses with the blow up dolls... trust me it's hilarious.
A classic! Glad you enjoyed it. I can watch it again and again
A lot of industries use this clip in training along with four candles by two ronnies. All about communication.
Brilliant reaction guys! Seen this so many times and it never gets old 😂
Glad you liked it. It’s my favourite episode, the chandelier cost £6,000 and they only had one. Del and Rodney had to look at each other for 30sec after the drop. Not only is this a great episode but a great back story
Absolute stone cold classic. So simple but beautifully written and acted.
The copy cost more than the original.
He died in 2011
Every episode has a stand out scene which has your ribs aching
I visited a school in Iwerne Minister a few years ago for work and apparently that was where this scene was filmed. It looks exactly the same now.
This still makes me laugh all these decades later. A really comedy classic moment.
The blow up dolls sketch is hilarious too 🤣🤣🤣
“Now, Brace yourself Rodney” … still used in dramatic situations …
Loved this reaction. Everyone here knows this episode, its a classic, so it’s amazing seeing people react exactly how the nation did all them years ago.
Doesn’t matter how many times you watch it, hilarious. Good writhing and superb acting.
so good to see you do this, it was a cherished only fools moment all them years ago and it stands up, got a great kick out of your reaction 👍👍
Definitely one of the great scenes in the history of British sit-coms. It's still funny now, 40 + years later.
Absolutely brilliant reaction 😂 I remember watching when it first aired & even though I know what’s going to happen it’s still sooooooooo funny 😄
One of the great comedy scenes. Along with delboys bar scene.
Donna , you must be American my love, because in England its spelt humour. Whatever, good luck and God bless you.
Kind regards Martin. P.S. If this sounds pedantic my apologies. I'm the worst at spelling in the world, so that's one glass house I shouldn't throw stones in! Forgive me Donna, I'm a year older today and that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it !
@@martinotoole9959 Martin, you seem to have missed the first part of my post when I said I grew up in Britain, I've never lived anywhere else, I touch type too (which means I don't need to look at the keyboard to type words), so forgive the slight spelling mistake if I miss a single letter in a word when writing a whole paragraph without looking at the keyboard, it does sound a little pedantic, considering you only replied to my post to correct my spelling and not to discuss/comment about the original topic. Also, the saying you're looking for is "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" Good luck to you too and Happy Birthday, may it be a prosperous one.
I worked with a carpenter in Leicestershire in the 90's that was tasked with removing the old nails from the joists in the attic ready to be boarded over and he did this very same thing! Wasn't expecting a chandelier to be hanging by a 6 inch nail. It cost £1600 to replace it 😊
It would be funny to hear some of Daniel’s funny construction stories.
My husband nearly had a heart attack when he saw this HE LAUGHED SO MUCH WONDERFUL XXXXX
Having been brought up with Only Fools and having seen this dozens of times, thankyou for your reaction - brings back the joy of the first time of seeing it myself ❤
Your reactions on this are priceless and clearly genuine. That's why you have the best Americans React to... Channel.
David Jason (Del) is a fantastic actor; impossible to typecast. Whatever he does, you see the character he’s playing at the moment, and never think of the other things he’s done.
That scene is based on a true story that John Sullivan the writers dad told him.
Timeless classic...
The seance still makes me laugh and uncle Alberts been on the bob Martins 😂
Your reaction to that legendary moment was the best reaction to it I've ever seen 😂😃 Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I watched a replay of this on holiday in India. The voices had been dubbed in Hindi, so I couldn’t understand a word, but the sequence and the comedic timing was enough. I cried with laughter at it as much then as now.
That chandler cost more too make than the original antique one but they couldn’t smash that one because it part of the house not a set 🤦♂️🤣👍🇬🇧
It's the way they both just stand stock still at the top of the ladders that gets me every time 🤣🤣🤣
It’s the noises and squeaks that get me
The actual drop was a ‘one take’ … how they kept a straight face I’ll never know
So many amazingly funny scenes from that show, pick any episode and you will be laughing every time.
This is an absolute CLASSIC! As a 57 year old Englishman who has grown up with English comedy, this is STILL in my top 5.
This happened in real life and John Sullivan wrote it into the episode.
How the cast and crew managed to get this done without laughing is beyond me. 👏👏👏👏👏
If you look closely once it hits the floor and they show Del Boy and Rodney, they are both shaking trying to control their laughter. Classic!
Brace yourself Rodney 😂
This series is absolute class.
Keep up the great content guys, definitely got me hooked on your channel…
It just so happens that nearly every single programme with only fools was based on the truth or recounted stories from the writers friends. Yep
Only fools is by far one of the best comedies to come out of England. It never gets old. Please watch them all!
Grandad: Is it very valuable, Del?
Del: Nah, not really. Was bleedin' priceless when it was hanging up there though!!
Only fools and horses is the best. Grew up in London and this show still has me in tears to this day
One of the best re-acting to a video I’ve seen. Genuine surprise. I found I laughed out loud with you even though Ive seen this million times🤣
Just loved your reaction to this! Us Brits have been enjoying wonderful sketches from this series for years - and laughing in disbelief just as you two guys have done! Just Brilliant!
“Not expecting that”? Imagine how much funnier it is when the outcome isn’t in the intro!
Best reaction I've ever seen to this.
This is why Only Fools is so loved
