I'm always duck hunting, so my shotgun is in the mud and water 2-3 days a week and I religiously clean it after every hunt and have yet to have an issue. I have thousands of rounds through the gun. It's an older Remington spr 453. And like you've said cleaning a gas gun is the best thing you can do for it
I am a big fan of you and your brother. You both have awesome videos. Watch them all the time. Much respect. You guys are great. This video is exactly why I love my inertia guns over my gas like my SBE 2 and 3. Take down and cleaning is simple. Less moving parts and less maintenance. I have literally taken apart my SBE 2 when I dropped it in dirt while hunting and rinsed it off in the river and it cycled just fine for a few ducks for dinner. Much respect for what you do.
Love the detail. I rarely shoot high round counts through my guns, but they all get cleaned every time after being used. If only a few shots, a bore snake only. Thanks for a great vid.
Amen! Clean it! My buddies have given me a hard time with the drill choke tube cleaning. So happy you showed this. Great job as always and very thankful for a fellow shotgunner! Best wishes on your continued success!
As an ex military guy it’s in my DNA to clean a gun every time I shoot. I am envious though of all the cleaning products you are using. My collection isn’t that broad for sure. Then if I have shot a particular gun then I’ll pull it out of the safe and clean it anyway. It’s something I enjoy.
Nice video! A few good tricks in there. Especially with the solution. Be sure that piston is completely dry! Myself, I use a small air compressor with 25 psi and a fine air nozzle with a trigger to blow powder, dirt and other junk out of my trigger and gas piston on my Betetta Extrema 2. I use a silicone rag to get rid of carbon on my mag tube. Break free CLP has always been my go to. I also check all of my springs and replace them regularly.
Thanks Steve for your great videos & advice. I’m over the pond & just got my shotgun license (at a cost of $180 after having to undertake 2 medical reports - land of the free we are not!). Happy to tell you my first purchase is going to be Winchester SX4 following your recommendation - looking forward to it! 😃🇺🇸🇬🇧😃
Look everyone don't waste your money buying these cleaners use brake cleaner, a can only cost a few dollars and cleans all the carbon. Wipe off the carbon then lightly oil all the cleaned parts that were dirty inside and out. I use Slide Glide from Brian Enos on the bolt and bolt rails and inside the receiver and because oil has a tendency to migrate and not stay where you want it.
Or just support then gun community and spend a few extra dollars instead of supporting the automotive industry . We get that it’s just brake cleaner rebranded but it supports a different community it’s a pretty simple concept
I have shot an SX3 for 8 years without a single issue. (Not including very low quality target load not ejecting correctly) I know it is a good gun, but I truly believe this track record is due to regular cleaning. Even though I have been doing it for years, this video was a great reminder on how it should be done. The video also made me feel a little guilty, because I find I have become lazy over the years and started cutting some corners. Thanks for reminder!
@@TargetFocusedLife Well, I can't say that I have ever purchased any one particular brand. Usually just get what the local gun shop has on hand when the old bottle runs out. Never really thought about it, but maybe that would be the reason I have troubles cycling the cheaper target load. Perhaps a higher quality lubricant is the answer.
Love your videos, I'm a little more OCD with my gun cleaning, no quick cleans. I field strip and wipe till white patches come clean, nothing oily on the gas system, then once a year completly disasemble and do the same.
never tried a SX4 there definitely one of the best gas autos out there i run a benelli m2 and franchi affinity i either do a 1000 round or weekly deep clean i shoot about 1500 cartridges a month in summer
Maybe by now you’ve figured this out, but get an ultrasonic cleaner. While you’re cleaning everything else, your choke and piston can be getting cleaner than you’ll ever get them in an ultrasonic cleaner. They’re awesome.
I always watch how he uses gloves to protect the skin, because all the chemicals that come into contact with the skin are absorbed by the body, very intelligent of him, which is strange to see a car mechanic putting on a pair of gloves. Great video, as always! It looks like the O-C12 Carbon Remover has been discontinued. Any suggestions for a good carbon remover for the piston? I like the idea of soaking it, as Steve does in this video.
Great vid, super helpful. Not many people know much on cleaning gas shotguns here in Australia, I’ve got a lever release gas shotty so this is super helpful
I have both Macy's 1 and 2 plus SBE1. I clean the Maxus ever 3 day or depends on rounds of ammo. Steel is very dirty. Clean the tube and gas knuckle, good to go . Takes 10 minutes. Complete cleaning trigger group and all Little longer
That is so hard because the value is often in the eye of the beholder. Maxus 1 or 2? SX4 vs Maxus 1, I go SX4 all day long. SX4 vs Maxus 2, I would go Maxus 2 if they were the same price. Just depends if you can justify the additional $. If you prefer inertia, the Affinity 3 is a great option. SX4 vs Affinity....toss up. How much target shooting will you do? I always go 3" over 3.5" and if you shoot a lot of clays, SX4 or Maxus 2 is the way I'd go. Hope that helps.
I just recently encountered problems with my sx3 not cycling that good. I clean it quite often, almost after every hunt, always after a rainy day. When it's raining pretty good, my gun wont cycle but i been oiling/lubing it the night b4 the hunt and it seems to fix the problem but i have to do it everytime and now sometimes it dont cycle even on a dry day. The shell in the chamber ejects after shot but it doesnt load the other one. Had it for 6 seasons i believe.
The issue could be several different possibilities, but often it comes down to cleaning/lubricating and or quality of ammo. Try my cleaning and lubcricating method with the products I used and let me know if you still have issues. 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
A trick I learned with my gold hunter same as ur sx3 is to get all the carbon off the sleeve that the piston rides on with scotchbrite! If that doesn’t work change the spring in the rear of the stock
For the newcomers here, you don't need any of the products shown in this video. You can buy a gallon of mineral spirits for the price of one can of that Gucci cleaner. That plus a bottle of motor oil or transmission fluid is all you need. Don't get scammed by repackaged chemicals that are available in bulk for 1/100 of the cost.
WD40 to break up and an old toothbrush to scrub the inside of the receiver. Same for the piston. 0000 steel wool for the magazine tube. Blow off everything with compressed air, oil with Remoil
That is a great question. I have several well used ones as well, but I am not sure when and if they can be cleaned. I'll ask Otis. 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
From what I know and have experienced, it should have no adverse effect. Of course, I always wipe off and oil the exterior finishes of my guns. 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
I have an inertia gun. I used to store it with the bolt open but my recoil spring weakened. I replaced it with a 125% spring and keep my bolt closed. I have a Rem 1100 that I stored with the bolt open. It is very loose so I will probably have to change springs in that too ?
Was the step where the remaining solvents/cleaners were wiped off edited out? Or is it just not necessary prior to lubricating? I'm assuming you should basically use a rag or paper towel to get as much of the cleaning solvents off as you can prior to applying a lubricant.
Great video, i use normal gun oil and gun cleaner, you seem to have some great products, I will definitely try them. On my gas recoil semi, I get this nasty burn mark on the cylinder, which I clean with dish detergent, any ideas what might be a better product for that? I enjoy cleaning my shotgun. I clean it after every use, because as a waterfowl hunter, my gun goes through a very dirty environment every time I go out.
I just called OTIS they recommended MC-7 Bore Cleaner if your looking to soak or MC-7 Extra Strength in aerosol of your looking for a spray. Hope this helps.
Nice video Steve. Thanks for sharing your cleaning techniques. Here’s my question. What about the crud/carbon the build’s up inside the stock and spring assembly?? My Browning Gold Hunter has been a great partner for many years but lately it doesn’t cycle like it used to. I’ve cleaned it exactly as you’ve demonstrated in the video many times over the years. Dry lube also. The first shell fires no problem and ejects. The second shell chambers but the bolt stops just shy of closing all the way. What is causing this?? I’ve held the plunger open and sprayed gun scrubber in the tube and tons of crud came running out. Did this multiple times until nothing came out. Thought that was the problem but it’s short cycling again. This gun has never liked cold weather, below freezing since I’ve owned it. Your thoughts please as my gunsmith is at a loss too. So frustrating. Missing my old friend in the blind. HELP!!!!! Should I purchase the aftermarket spring assembly for the stock? Sorry so long. Bummed goose hunter in Battle Creek, Mi🥲🥲🥲. Thanks. Happy New Year 😃
They only make the gold in 10gauge anymore for a reason. I have one in my safe ('96 model) I use to break clays, but the newer piston guns are miles beyond the older generation guns. As a new hunter and gun owner, I found your video very helpful! The only area of the gun I am still confused about is the trigger assembly. It would be great if you could make a video (or point me to one you already made) about how to clean the trigger assembly properly (i.e., how to clean, how often, what to oil, etc.) I am using a gas gun, Beretta a400 xtreme plus. Thanks!
What a pain. How often do you have to do that ? I never timed myself with my SBE2 but it is never that bad. You might consider getting an ultrasonic cleaner for that gas cylinder or whatever you call it.
The same process I used in this video will work great for the Maxus 2. All the product links are in the description. Let me know if you have any other questions. 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
Hi Steve, I really love your content! I'm from Germany, so it's really hard to get your maintenance products. Can you pls tell me which exact Wheeler pin size you use for the SX4? Keep up the great work! and nice to see that you also love the Kleine Münsterländer, they are the best 😌
Anybody know why OTIS discontinued it's 012-c Carbon remover? I guess "Why" doesn't really matter ... does anyone have any recommendations for a good replacement product? I heard OTIS 012-c was really good.😖☹😕
pretty good but that would never pass military inspection soldier thats true but you aint in the military we had to get our weapons so clean if you could find and discoloration anywhere on that weapon on a q tip you were not done cleaning like there had to be zero carbon sounds impossible but oh no we had to do it i used a solvent tank hot water and a powerful cleaner degreaser i just cleaned my gas shotgun the same way
That last little bit highlights a pet peeve of mine. Why is it when you show someone a gun, even other gun people, they immediately grab it on the bare metal parts? Makes me cringe.
You use a lot of chemicals to clean. I used to use a bunch of stuff and I've just simplified life and use Break Free CLP for everything. I'll use a little Lucas gun oil on slides. Really haven't noticed my guns running any better or worse with just one product.
cant stamd the people who say. “I dont ever clean my gun and it still runs.” Meanwhile the choke is stuck in the barrel and they get failure to eject every other round 😆.
I have several Browning Golds and a Maxus II. To pop the pins out I just use a wood golf tee since the soft wood won’t damage the finish around the pins holes of the guns nor the the pins themselves. In the field, if I need to take out the trigger group, I use the plastic gas sleeve which has a small metal protrusion on the “stick” end which fits perfectly into the pin holes. But be careful, that little piece is metal and can scratch..
1st step is to go buy $$$$$$ of Otis products (add the sponsor here) not forgetting the trigger pins lube, the sight lube, aaaaaand the butt pad lube and cleaner. You put butt pad cleaner on ur bolt cleaner then you start all over.
My way may not be the cheapest way but I have cleaned guns a lot of different ways with different products and this is my current method. I clean a lot so I am always looking for the quickest and most effective way.
I hate to be THAT GUY but son you kept referring to your receiver as the chamber. There’s only one chamber and that my boy is part of the barrel bore. Just sayin if you want to be taken serious in life you first have to take what you’re doing as serious enough to at least learn the proper names. The first time you called it wrong I caught it and didn’t think much more than you just got tongue tied and called it the wrong name. But after you kept calling the receiver the CHAMBER I felt you need to be corrected. Sorry but I don’t have you cell to do it in a private way

Agree. Inertia guns like the Benelli SBE are much easier to clean than the gassers.
Try Ballistol. Cleans off burnt powder and oils too
I put a drop of oil or two on the thread of my chokes.
What is a good cleaner for the maxus 2 wicked wing
The same process I used in this video will work great for the Maxus 2. All the product links are in the description. Let me know if you have any other questions. 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)
What was the solution you were soaking in???
Hi Steve,
I really love your content!
I heard OTIS 012-c was really good.😖☹😕
A clean gun is a safe gun
Me watching this thinking I should go clean my sx4 for the first time this season.
😂
pretty good but that would never pass military inspection soldier thats true but you aint in the military we had to get our weapons so clean if you could find and discoloration anywhere on that weapon on a q tip you were not done cleaning like there had to be zero carbon sounds impossible but oh no we had to do it i used a solvent tank hot water and a powerful cleaner degreaser i just cleaned my gas shotgun the same way
Kinda sounds like the quick scrub is a fancy degreaser.
Great video
That last little bit highlights a pet peeve of mine. Why is it when you show someone a gun, even other gun people, they immediately grab it on the bare metal parts? Makes me cringe.
I clean and treat everything than use compression air.
You use a lot of chemicals to clean. I used to use a bunch of stuff and I've just simplified life and use Break Free CLP for everything. I'll use a little Lucas gun oil on slides. Really haven't noticed my guns running any better or worse with just one product.
“How to shotgun clean a gas” is how I read the thumbnail
ATA venza?
cant stamd the people who say. “I dont ever clean my gun and it still runs.” Meanwhile the choke is stuck in the barrel and they get failure to eject every other round 😆.
The best bro love them ❤️❤️❤️
i form malaysia.. shotgun license is just in dreams..
Don’t forget your safety glass when cleaning your gun👓
I have several Browning Golds and a Maxus II. To pop the pins out I just use a wood golf tee since the soft wood won’t damage the finish around the pins holes of the guns nor the the pins themselves. In the field, if I need to take out the trigger group, I use the plastic gas sleeve which has a small metal protrusion on the “stick” end which fits perfectly into the pin holes. But be careful, that little piece is metal and can scratch..
Never spray oil in a chotgun
It's 2 am. What am I doing here. I don't even have a gas driven one.
Using 45 dollars worth of cleaner and 3/4 of the can seems excessive.
I want to watch you go duck hunting with Pitboss waterfowl
1st step is to go buy $$$$$$ of Otis products (add the sponsor here) not forgetting the trigger pins lube, the sight lube, aaaaaand the butt pad lube and cleaner. You put butt pad cleaner on ur bolt cleaner then you start all over.
My way may not be the cheapest way but I have cleaned guns a lot of different ways with different products and this is my current method. I clean a lot so I am always looking for the quickest and most effective way.
plz make video on ATA NEO. 😑😑
I thought Aaron did all the cleaning
Show me how to clean my tool? 😬
Are you planning on doing any Retay shotgun reviews soon by any chance?
I would like to but I do not have one in hand yet. Sorry. Not sure when I will. 👊 Stay Target 🎯Focused (Hebrews 12:1-3)

😊👍💪!!!
$20 worth of cleaning products later 😂
I hate to be THAT GUY but son you kept referring to your receiver as the chamber. There’s only one chamber and that my boy is part of the barrel bore. Just sayin if you want to be taken serious in life you first have to take what you’re doing as serious enough to at least learn the proper names. The first time you called it wrong I caught it and didn’t think much more than you just got tongue tied and called it the wrong name. But after you kept calling the receiver the CHAMBER I felt you need to be corrected. Sorry but I don’t have you cell to do it in a private way
