Glad to see my favourite guitarist 🎸 Tom Verlaine get in at # 51. You could figure out # 1 fairly easily. Richie Blackmore is perennially underrated ..saw him in Rainbow 🌈 when Dio was still vocalist. Really phenomenal player. No Geordie from Killing Joke or Nick McCabe from The Verve were disappointments. 🎸
The fact that Blackmore, Lifeson and Clapton are as low as they are tells you all you need to question the validity of this list.

Glad to see Jonny Greenwood made the list for sure. I do enjoy Peter Buck's work, May, Knopfler, Jack White, Gilmour, Wray - all great dudes for sure....Tom Morello - glad to see him give major love.
Leo Nocentelli was a member of the seminal New Orleans funk/R&B band The Meters. They had a Top 40 hit in 1969 with the single "Cissy Strut". They also backed up Robert Palmer on his albums "Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley" and "Some People Can Do What They Want". Charlie Christian didn't have a long career, but he was an influence to T-Bone Walker and Chuck Berry. He played in Benny Goodman's orchestra. Hubert Sumlin is a blues legend who was Howlin' Wolf's longtime lead guitarist. In all honesty, Rolling Stone's lists are nothing but a collective joke.

PJ Harvey is not only a great guitarist but a great bassist, pianist, percussionist and harpist as well! An underrated talent for sure

Another comment. You mentioned a favourite guitarist of yours was Zal Cleminson. And i mentioned Guthrie Govan. Govan lists two of his biggest influences to be Frank Zappa and especially lists Cleminson as perhaps his biggest influence. If you want you should check some of his videos on UA-cam especially in a small club with he and a sax player. Beautiful.

Well, although there were many ridiculous positionings (say that ten times fast) I will let them off as, for me, they got number one right. Listen to ‘Hear My Train a Comin’ from the album ‘Rainbow Bridge’ to confirm he deserves the number one spot.
its hard to say what makes a great guitarist. its not just techincal ability, its feel and emotion too. i think neil young is a great guitarist yet he doesnt have great technical ability. its also how influential they were. cortez the killer a great track from neil.

Again you can't rank guitarists Larry,there are thousands of great guitarists in the world,maybe millions and playing many different styles of guitar as well,for example,my favorite guitar player is Jimi Hendrix because he was so melodic and innovative but technically he wasn't best guitar player out there,Eric Clapton is a great technical guitar player but there are others who are faster,check out Tommy Emmanuel for example and others who are better finger pickers and others who's more creative,great country pickers,great blues players,classical players and progressive rock players and the list goes on and on,it would probably be better to just list who are people's favorite guitarists rather then who the greatest guitarists are,again Larry like most rankings on anything it's down to who or what an individual likes. I love how Wishbone Ash had two of the top guitarrists back in the day according to the UK, but now they're not on here. And where the HELL are Glen Campbell and Roy Clark? I'd have them both in my Top 20 -- easily.
You are correct about Ted Turner and Andy Powell . Not only were they both on the list they were listed fairly well not in the 90’s. Wishbone Ash was a great band.
I agree, Ritchie Blackmore should be much higher on this list, maybe even top 20.
You havent heard of sonic youth music. Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo are amazing guitarists. Ive seen them live and wow!!!

Weird list. I definitely would have Alex Lifeson, Brian May, Pete Townshend, and Eric Clapton in the top 10. It’s so hard to compare Blues guitarist to rock guitarist to me. I think they got #1 right. I would also throw in Stephen Stills.
I can understand why Adam Jones wouldn't make this list, but I thought they'd at least mention Steve Vai!
And #94 for Joe Satriani is way too low for me, he should have been higher on the list.

Indeed. Phil McCracken is the most underrated guitarist/musician/artist to have ever lived. Is he still around? Retired? Working on his next masterpiece, perhaps?

Any guitarist list without Roy Clark there is something wrong with it. Any list like this is just some writers fantasy and obviously isn't based on anything but some unnamed guy from Rolling Stone's personal taste who ever even heard of half of the musicians on this list.

Yngwie Malmsteen, Gary Moore, Neal Schon, Allan Holdsworth, Andy Latimer, Steve Morse, John Petrucci, Michael Schenker, Al Di Meola.???... ah, whatever...they would put up Beyoncé or Taylor Swift higher than Steve Howe or Hackett.
Knopfler at 96? With Peter Green above many of these unheard of nonentities. Some of the ones you say you've never heard of - that's quite stunning. Many of these are not even known as guitarists. Why do we bother - a total waste of time from what was a great magazine 50 years ago. And no sign of Nigel Tufnel.

Very good list. Angus and Malcolm 👍🏽 Nice to see James Burton at 24. I thought Eric Clapton would have been top 10. I don’t recall Dave Mustaine anywhere in the 250 , I thought he would have been there. I would have added Ihsahn from Emperor but I suppose Norwegian Black Metal is their thing. Anyway, no arguments with their number 1 pick, nor 2 for that matter. My number 3 would have been Jeff Beck.

This may be the worst compiled list in Rolling Stone history. I have a feeling its intentional. A list of 250 guitarists without Guthrie Goven included is not a list.
I agree with Hendrix being the best but Mark Knoffler at 96 is a crime and Brian May should higher.
While I like St Vincent. in what planet is she better than David Gilmour and Buddy Guy?? Seriosuly, Rolling Stone is a rag! It has totally lost the plot.

Well, the list is totally wrong... Clapton should have been way up near the top. That he is not in the top ten totally destroys the validity of this list. Now, about Hendrix... he was mostly great because he was utterly innovative. The stuff he play, while wildly experimental, is not difficult to replicate on a technical level. I don't think he was technically the best though, though his influence is undeniable. I think Jeff Beck was better in that respect. I would put Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton on just about the same level, in fact Clapton himself lauded Guy's skill, saying that it was almost out of control, or something like that... that Buddy Guy took it as close to the limit as he could.
Also... where is Peter Frampton? Where is Yngwie Malmsteen? What the heck? I love Neil Young, but I don't see him as one of the greatest of all time... in fact, the mere fact that he leaves in the sloppy mistakes makes him endearing... but he's a very good guitar player, a sloppy guitar player, but not one of the very greatest of all time. Just my opinion, and I guess this list was Rolling Stones' opinion... it's just that my opinion makes senses and their opinion doesn't lol!

Nowadays people like to use some of the stuff he said to rate his guitar playing. Clapton is one of the most influential. Said by people like Van Halen, Brian May, Gilmour....
Frampton, Holdsworth, Gary Moore, Neal Schon, Petrucci, Alvin Lee, George Benson, Paul Gilbert....none of them on the list....
I can't understand the criteria here. It can't be technique or Chuck Berry would never be top2. It can't be influence or Clapton would never be 35...
@@andrelf7 Yes that was the only thing that annoyed me on the list while I dislike his views. On the last version of the list he was in the top 5, maybe 2, and now 35 is obviously on purpose
I'm not a guitarist so I don't know this and I'm just asking: Wouldn't Hendrix's playing be hard to replicate for his time? I don't know there were many shredding like that back then. The way he plays and performs also. For me he was just the man. An incredible presence and aura to his work. I wouldn't get as excited to watch and listen to Jeff Beck personally.
@reengills7814 Jim Hendrix' influence is undeniable, and he was probably the greatest guitarist of his time. Clapton was influential, but not as innovative, as he was basically blues based (well, so was Hendrix but the approaches were quite different), and built upon what came before, going all the way back to Robert Johnson... but Eric electrified it and brought it to a new audience. But yes, Hendrix was brilliant, live and in the studio.
