Rdavidr actually hammered a cheaper metal snare and it improved it, I was thinking of try this myself. I have a Tama Rockstar that's a little out of round, if I can find a throw off for cheap I think I'll try it out
I think the head going over the bearing edge ould alter the sound some, maybe in a bas way. Also, I thought of doing it inside the wood shell instead, and that would not affect the head seating but could also alter the sound. I have tried this with aluminum foil before on the inside on all shells except the bass. I think Bonham might have used foil inside the 24 inch bass!
@@malonedrumI got a muffler and it sounds better with something that resonates with the head on top if you ask me. No one but drummer or engineer hears all that overtone in the mix, I'm told, usually bothers us more.
I have not, but I'm sure it would be a similar concept, although, I think those wraps on the wood snares from Ludwig were really thin, not like a thicker metal flashing.
title is a bit deceptive hahaha. i thot someone had legit hand hammered an entire snare- i was like holy 🤬. hahaha. it looks cool tho. i think it'd look even cooler if u put more hammered dimples in the bronze sheet. u got some impressive tones out of the different tunings. very impressive. ur playing is great too. : )
@@malonedrum more points of tension make for a more consistent and stable tuning, and you can also tune heads higher, if that's your thing. For snares, that's my thing 😂 I recently did an 8 to 12 lug conversion from a 3.5 piccolo to a 6.5 chrome shell. It's a frankensteining, but she's now my favorite snare. Even better than my Ludwig 60's Supraphonic, which is a factory 10 lug.
@@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power fair, but it sound like a more personal preference. I actually really enjoy 8 lug drums over 10, because it allows me to add more tension to each lug before the pitch of the head raises more, also a reason 6 lugs snare are desirable for some. Nothing against 10 or 12, but I don’t really see it as an “improvement” but a “feature”
@@malonedrum It's Physics, brother 🤷♂️ Sure, I prefer the physical advantage of more lugs. Besides, you're adding more of a physical load on the hardware and shell to reach a certain tuning, whereas there's less stress requirement per lug if you increase the number. But each their own. I still as a rule have never heard a 6 lug snare sound as good as anything higher, no matter what tuning it was in.
@@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power I'm glad you've found a preference and something you desire. I see it differently, and am glad there's a market for all sorts of options.
Kinda cool Mike. Pop Rivets at the lap joint.
Not a skill I've used much, but I've seen that on some other drums. Good idea.

Yeah, that’d be a fun project to try as well.

It wouldn’t certainly alter the reflections.
cool project and I'm amazed at how good it sounds.
Yeah, I think with the muffler on, those cheap important steel snares sound pretty good. Def a cool lofi vibe.

That was a lot of fun to watch and the snare came out sounding great. Good job Mike 👍
Thanks Stephen! Tried to give a little plug to the show, looking forward to the highly anticipated episode this week!
Sounds good! That is some pretty flashing, with the copper brass look!
Yeah, that’s an interesting idea, and I’ve heard the same with Bonham. Maybe it’s something I can try in the future.
That would be a awesome wrap for a whole kit with black hardware
Yeah, you should try it!
Using copper sheets might look even better
Another look, more rustic probably
Was there an air hole that got covered?
I wish I could remember, but I feel like I would have popped through there as well, like I did with the lug holes.
How’s the loctite adhesive holding up? I’m planning something similar trying to decide on a glue
Honestly, I sold this drum a couple years back, but it was fine when I got rid of it. Can’t keep every project with the amount I do.
@@malonedrum oh that’s awesome! Good problem to have haha! Thanks for the reply
i love it mike. great job.
Thanks Mark! Thanks for the idea as well
Has anyone tried wrapping a wood ply snare in this? Referring to Ludwig L-600 S/L Series 5x14" Chrome Over Wood Snare 1980s

@@malonedrum hahaha.
If you wanted to improve it and were going to wrap it anyway, you could have redrilled it to be a 10 lugger.
Is it necessarily an improvement to have more lugs? I've never seen lug count that way.

You wrapped it without removing the logo
Yeah, not sure it made a ton of difference on this quality of drum.

Plz do a drum transcription of the new silk sonic song
Thanks for checking out my video out this snare drum!
Spending money in a crap drum with a mocked useless envelope, I don't catch the use of that
It was just a fun DIY project...
someone doesnt know how to tune
