  • In this video we take a look inside the EGO 56V String Trimmer (ST1500SF) we look at the brushless motor and see if it is easy to replace head with typical replacement head available. We also take a look at the Motor Speed Controller. This trimmer has been great and I have used it in my yard for about a year and 4 months. It still works great and the 2.5ah battery will trim around all of my approx. 2/3 acre property before it runs out of charge.

    My EGO string trimmer stopped working. I have to troubleshoot it. Thanks for making this vide. It gave me great insight where to look problem. I suspect it's motor controller might be gone bad. I recently fixed my snow blower which stopped working due to motor controller gone bad. I will say now a days motors are so much reliable that they rarerly go bad.

      Thanks for your comment. Great job on your snow blower. I agree with you on the motor, I have not seen one fail yet and I have 8 EGO power tools. I also bought a bad blower, and chainsaw to learn more about them and troubleshoot and they both had bad controllers. I have a video repairing the 14" chainsaw controller. The blower I made a fault finding video because it was a bad micrcontroller chip and mosfets also. I did a video later also running the blower with a different BLDC controller!

      I have not lost one myself. None of the tools I have purchased have failed the speed controller yet. I purchased some from eBay non working that was failed/non working just to learn more about them. I have personally only lost the one 2.5ah EGO pack. EGO sent me a new pack, told me to remove label and recycle bad pack. I was able to repair that pack in a video as well.

      I have not had a trimmer failure yet. I do have a video of the 14" chainsaw controller repair and I did a fault finding video on a blower both of which has a somewhat similar brushless controller to the trimmer. If under warranty EGO will make it right, usually they let you keep the bad item as well so you may be able to repair it as well.

      @@ThriftyToolShed You're very welcome! Great videos! I was wondering if you could recommend some type of panel-mount, rotating potentiometer to replace the trigger-type in the handle of the EGO trimmer. I would love to be able to adjust the speed of my tractor-mounted EGO trimmer from the cab (like my radio volume) rather than wiring it wide open. I don't need full speed for the grass under the trees and it would also save some battery power for the tall grass in the road ditches. Thanks!!!

    A matter of curiosity. Why would you want to change the Trimmer Head for a non EGO product? Have you had problems with the original head? I have been using my EGO Line Trimmer for about the same period as you have and I have found no issues with it at all. The bump head works fine for me but I would like to know if there are any issues I would be very interested what you have found if any. Cheers from Brisbane Australia.

      jr4750jr , personally I can not stand bump heads, they easily waste line due to inadvertantly bumping and are a pain to stop and rewind. I just like inserting the line as it wears down with the quick load. I put a few pieces in my pocket and weed trim for hours. Glad yours works well for you. Not a bad bump head.

    I have the ST1500E (purchased in 2017 I think) which has stopped working. I'm outside of warranty and trying to figure out of it's the controller or the motor that has failed.
    This video helps me understand how to access the motor to do some testing.
    I'm hoping that I can just test the voltage at the motor and see what happens as I actuate the trigger.
    Then apply voltage directly to the motor to see what happens.
    The trimmer was great when it worked and even though I've had it a long time, our lawn is literally 3x3m so it gets very little use. My brother had a mower go bad as well as the mutil head tool as well. Overall, quite disappointed with the reliability of these ego tools.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  8 місяців тому +1

      Glad this video has helped some. You can't put voltage directly to these type motors. They are brushless they have 3 phases. I have not had an issue with even my older string trimmer yet so this is as far as I have ever had to get into it. I have seen several blowers controllers go bad. I believe they are similar. Most of the time the issue is a brushless DC (BLDC) controller. It is usually shorted Mosfets on the board and I have a few videos about those. I have on one occasion seen the fuse blow and the controller did run again. This is rare, it's usually a board Mosfet failure. If you are interested in testing enough you can use a small and relatively cheap little BLDC controller to run the motor to see. I enjoy doing this some may not. It's worth having around just playing with these BLDC's as they are fun and quite powerful. Best of luck to ya!
      Make sure you get the yellow controller the red one is for hall sensor feedback. The yellow is sensorless.

      Wow! That's very interesting. I have only seen one BLDC motor fail so far in many EGO items I have worked on even though I have not worked on any of the trimmers that is still surprising. I would have guessed a good 90% chance it was the controller based on the chainsaw and blowers I have worked on. Thanks for sharing!

  • @sylkelster
    @sylkelster 6 років тому +1

    I've been thinking about adding a reversing switch using a DPDT toggle with an 'X' jumper configuration on the back of the switch, essentially creating a 4-way switch. I would use it to switch two of the phases around going out to the motor, assuming it is a three phase motor. Switch would need to be fairly heavy duty. Looks like there is not a whole lot of room but it could be managed. I'm left handed and would rather flick a switch than adjust my trim approach against walls and fences. I like to cut in shorts and don't like the stings of debris on my legs + I'm lazy. Just an idea that others might like as well.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  6 років тому

      sylkelster, Thanks for the comment. Good thought there. If it is 3 phases as it appears to be it should work well. Just a added note, the Ego power head turns the trimmer attachment the opposite direction. I just bought one so I can edge and hedge trim and eventually pole saw. Just thought I would mention that I noticed that difference. I wish i would have waited and bought the powerhead first but it is a newly available item, and I personally have not seen it in home Depot (in store) yet!

  • @johns1577
    @johns1577 3 місяці тому

    When I tighten the nut the head won't spin. Not seeing what you called a washer. Afraid I've lost a part or two. Would that explain why it won't spin? The manual shows two bushings on the end of the motor shaft, but it seems you can't buy them. Do they come with the motor?

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 місяці тому

      The black spacer seen at 1:17 in the video has to be in place on this one to keep it spaced off so it can rotate freely. I actually have seen some models put together differently though. They seemed to have changed the head assembly design over the last few years. So yours could be made differently for sure. I do Not know if the motor comes with any other parts or not. I have never bought one.

  • @mandamus777

    My EGO trimmer is 3 yrs old. When trying to start it for trimming it just makes a bunch of clicks and the motor will not spin. Any help you could suggest would be appreciated. Namaste.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  4 роки тому +1

      I actually have not had any issues with either of mine so far, so I may be of no help here. I am assuming you have the model similar to the one in the video and the motor is the lower head driven directly? If so, is it free to turn by hand? Make sure no straw, vine etc. has wrapped up and locked down the rotor. I have had controllers fail on a blower and a chainsaw and the speed control is very similar. The blower and trimmer do not have hall sensor feedback but all three are similar. I have had them short the mosfets and blow the fuse. I have not seen the clicking. I am wondering if you could have a phase that is lost and it maybe trying to start but it is single phasing? If so with the string out of the head you could try turning it a little and then start it and see if it takes off? Just a thought! If that does happen then one of the phases of the controller is open or could even be the plug connection at the motor. Best of luck!
      Namaste.

      Beleive me these manufacturers put cheap ass controller for a reason. So people can buy their stuff. I will suggest open it and troubleshoot with multimeter and checking you getting voltage output at controller. That's it I can bet that's gone bad. I have fixed my snow blower that way. Also you will always never gonna find same controller since it's custom made for them. Just buy controller with higher voltage and power rating than what that trimmer is rated you should be good to go.

    I’ve got a ST1500S (no F so it’s the regular load head circa 2016). I 3D printed an adapter washer to put saw blades on it. Imagine a cone but has a boss on the bottom that is the same size as the blade bore. Turns out a 10” saw blade and a dedicated brush blade (4 tooth) has too much weight and the blade just jitters when trying to start it. 7 1/4 blade works with a pre spin, and a 5.5” blade works by itself. Trying to find that sweet spot. I’m hoping one of those 3 skinny tooth blades is light enough. The way it’s acting makes me think it’s using Hall effect sensor acceleration readings instead of current draw to kick the motor down.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  2 роки тому +1

      The blade is way too much for the smaller trimmers with the motor in the trimmer head such as the ST1500S. The power head PH1400 with trimmer attachment is the one to use brush blades with, it's more like the gas trimmers head!

      EGO should make it good. That is an issue I have not seen yet. The power head trimmer attachment is pretty easy to add other heads on it. It is made more like the gas trimmer heads. The regular ST1500 string trimmer (with the motor in the head) I had to modify it to put on a different head. I did a quick video on that, but the power head should be easy. I don't like winding string so I always put on a push n load type head on my trimmers now. I the video of the st1500 I had people comment why I even wanted the different head on it. everyone is different, I guess some people still like winding cord?

    How did you find the vibration levels on this version? My nerves in my hands are a bit messed up.... Anyway, I tried the newer power load version and had to return it - turns out there is a factory unbalanced issue in the head of them. Basically, out of the box they are setting the head to its lowest vibration, (just so that it gives the illusion of being okay) but then if you rotated the outer head 180 degrees it vibrated significantly more. Enough that I couldn't hold it for more than a few minutes, but the fact that they are coming out of the box set in a specific way, shows it was a known issue, which is rather bemusing. These were a number of 2019 dated powerload trimmer models I tested.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 роки тому

      I do not have the power load version so that is interesting. I have had no issues with this original. Mine is very smooth. If the string breaks and is uneven it will vibrate some until corrected, but other than that no issues. It seems to be a well balanced BLDC. The original factory head was smooth, I just don't care for bump heads. I am running different head. The one I use now is the Push n Load type and I have it centered well so it is well balanced as well.
