Using a Brush Cutter on the EGO 56V Power Head

- * This will only work on the Power Head trimmer. I am getting asked over and over again about putting this on the ST1500SF for example. No, it will not fit. I have answered this many times in the comments. *
In this video we first mention that Home Depot has announced they are dropping EGO and also Lowe's announced they are picking up the EGO line. Interesting to see how that will play out. Then we look into installing a 10" 80T Brush cutting blade on the EGO Power Head (PH1400). We install and test it out and it seems to be a great tool in the EGO arsenal. I will just leave this blade on my STA1500 string trimmer attachment. I usually use my smaller and lighter ST1500SF (with Push-N-Load head retrofitted) for trimming around the house anyway. I typically use the Powerhead 90% of the time for Edging and Hedge trimming. Hope you find this video helpful. Be careful out there. Thanks for Watching!

EGO is the Tesla of lawn equipment!
Thank you for explaining. I now get a new tool for my multi pole. Ego is my must favorite brand. I have so many of their products and love that their batteries work on basically everything.
I recently bought the Edgit cutter attachment and found your video while looking for the best way to mount this thing. I'm going to try the same adapter kit you used and hopefully it will work. Thanks for the video!
As long as it is going on the Power Head and not the models with the motor at the trimmer head it should work similar to the one I showed. Hope it works out!
Yeah the switch over was kind of interesting especially since Home Depot was and apparently for the time being, as of January 2021, still is a repair place for Ego. Had a string trimmer auto not work a couple times and Ego told me to take it to a local HD to get evaluated and fixed. And I was hoping you'd try the saw on one of those pines!
Lowe’s is my new store now because of this
Gotta get me one of these! Got a 30 foot pond on my property and this will be good for keeping the cattails down! Plus I have a good excuse to get a new EGO string trimmer! Thanks!
Thanks for your comment!
Just make sure it's the power head for the brush cutter. The regular EGO is nice but the motor is in the trimmer head so it won't work the same!
@@ThriftyToolShed : Dang! You've inspired me to find a cutter blade for the regular EGO string trimmer I have. Works too well!
@@ThriftyToolShed where do you get the brush cutter power head? is that at lowes or does it have to be special ordered?
@dontump2286
Some Lowe's may carry it in store. If not it can be ordered. This is what it looks like by Amazon link. They also come in carbon shaft type or as a kit with an odd 3 blade brush cutter blade.

@@ThriftyToolShed Awesome thanks!
Love your videos. A while back you measured the rpm of your dedicated trimmer. Can you do a video measuring the rpm of the power head in low and high for comparison? Keep up the great videos
Ezmak,
Does this work for ya!

UL Approved. Undertakers Labs.
I replaced the head on mine and when I tighten the nut it won't spin. Afraid I've lost at least one of the bushings the manual shows. But I can't find replacement parts.
Good timing! Two days ago, I fit a 10" circular saw blade to my EGO carbon-fiber shaft self-loading head line trimmer. I used a Stihl cup and a couple of washers that I custom-made (filed) to fit the EGO 9mm shaft with two flats on it. It worked well! I cut enough elderberry, salmonberry, small alder, etc. in 20 minutes to fill the back of my full-sized pickup with stake sides on it! I do wish I had bought the EGO power head version, there's so many more options there... I have the 18" EGO chainsaw, but still wish I had a pole saw... something to look forward to... except there's a Home Depot in my town, and the closest Lowe's is a 1.5 hour drive away!
Awesome. That does suck about Lowe's. I ordered about half of my EGO tools from Home Depot website (more selection) with free delivery. Hopefully Lowe's will be the same. I am wondering if Amazon will still carry the EGO line?
@@ThriftyToolShed We'll see... I don't mind giving my money to Lowe's, they are better than Home Depot. Ace Hardware was carrying some EGO items, too... not sure if they still are, or if that will change with the Lowe's agreement?
Thanks. I could use something like this. have the trimmer...blade and adapter kit are in my amazon "list" from your link. I may also get a chain saw. Could use an extra battery anyway.
Absolutely, I love having all my repaired packs and several newer ones also. So I don't ever run out of charged packs! Now I am wanting to expand my tools and attachments that same way! It would
be so nice having not only the seperate attachments such as edger, pole saw, hedge trimmers, but also several of the string trimmer heads. A couple with different string heads, a couple with different style brush blades etc.....🤔
I really like the EGO chainsaw as well. Thanks for your comment!
I have just bought a Craftsman WS230 from Lowe's. What adapters do I need to attach your brush cutter to it?Thanks, Syd
I do not have the Craftsman WS230 but seems to be a gas straight shaft so most brush cutter should work I would think. I do not have one to know for sure!
Do we need that spline adapter you already had for this install? If so, where might I find that piece?
It was the one that came with my power head. Hopefully all are the same...
does anybody know if you can install a blade like this on a regular ego trimmer, mines loosen up regularly to the left,i have an ego st1500sf
I would not try it. I have the st1500sf and it is direct drive motor and does not have near the power of the power head. I believe the power head is at least 2X the power. You would also have to do modifications to the ST1500 just to get the blade to attach. I have a video making a push n load type head fit on mine and it took a little work to make it a go. The blade would require machine work and it may not have the power to handle it?
I must have an older model of the ego string trimmer and I don’t know how to keep the shaft from turning when trying to tighten the blade down. Any suggestions?
This is the Power Head so the PH1400 model.
I liked your video showing how to attach the brush cutter blade to the Ego trimmer. After I watched the video I read some of the comments and discovered this blade will not work on my STA1500 trimmer. Do you know if there is blade available that will work on the STA1500?
I sure don't. The STA1500 is a good trimmer with a brushless motor, but the small motor is a direct drive with a small motor shaft. It is not designed to take the abuse of the large cutter blade. The PH1400 power head is different with the drive shaft making it much more similar in comparison to a gas straight shaft trimmer that we can add the brush cutter and etc. onto without issue. Sorry about the confusion and thanks for your kind comment!
We put a blade on our Power+ power head multi attachment tool but 3rd time using it in the same day we bumped into a wire fence, and it just quit. Won't turn no matter what battery or attachment - or no attachment. Any ideas about that kind of situation?
I have not had that exact issue if it is not trying to turn at all it could possibly be a fuse on the controller. I have replaced one before on the EGO blowers and have videos on that and sometimes it's the controller itself that is bad. I don't know how similar the controller is on the power head at this time. I do have one to work on when I get some time, but I have not yet repaired one of these. If by chance still under warranty I would contact EGO.
Do you think this will fit on the 1623t? Not sure of the arbor size difference.
Power head only. This will not work with trimmers with the motor in the head.
Have you looked into using a 10” or 12” three head steel cutter? It seems to attach the same adapter kit. Doesn’t look like it will cut down trees LOL but looks like a good brush cutter. Love to hear or see your thoughts on that option or even see a review on it if possible.
Rick,
I have seen those that are kind of Y shaped? and I personally think it would put alot of shock on the gearbox and be very rough on the drive system mechanical parts especially with vines etc. So I really liked the 80T blade for that exact reason. It is a very smooth cutting motion. I have not tried one of the Y shaped bkades to say for certain, simply a thought.
@@ThriftyToolShed Yeah, the Y shaped ones are the one's I'm talking about. Ego actually sells something like it overseas (egopowerplus.com.au/power-multi-tool-brushcutter-attachment/) so I though that the powerhead could probably handle it. I really hope they bring this attachment to the US, but if not I think I'm going to go with the www.amazon.com/ATIE-Teeth-Steel-Cutter-Trimmer/dp/B007MW0MSE?th=1 since there is a guy that shows that it fits on the trimmer attachment.
You think this would be possible with the 1520S?
I do not. The power head is more like the gas trimmer heads and the heads are easier to change out. The 1500 type have the motor mounted at the trimmer and is not the same. I have a video showing that I added a different head on my 1500 but I had to modify just to add a push-n-load type on it.
I know the SF1500 won't work with this. What model are you adapting and are there other model numbers that will work?
I believe I have information or links in the description of this video. If the links are no longer any good let me know. It has been some time...
Can you add the brush cutting blade to your other EGO Trimmer, the regular standalone trimmer version?
No, only the power head. The ones with the motor at the trimmer head is not strong enough for the brush cutter blade.
@@ThriftyToolShed excellent. Thank you for the explanation
Can you convert an EGO ST15020S to a brush cutter? If so what kit do you recommend?
No, just the PH1400 style power head.
I dont see that blade on amazon anymore. What is the bore size? 1 inch?
Yes, It is 1". Similar to these I believe, but yes the exact one I shared has since disappeared!

Great video, I’ve been using the same blade on my ego. Question for you, I have the same issue where I have to “pulse” the trigger. Any idea why this attachment causes this? I also have the power sweep paddle and chainsaw attachment, those you rarely have to pulse.
Yes, it is the inertia of this large diameter blade on the gear reducer designed for the light weight string. So we are pushing the torque limit a little with this set-up. Overall it handled it much better than I thought it would. Mine has given no issues yet. Other than pulsing the start every so often, it does great. Smaller diameter blade would most likey start up better. I will stick with the big boy!
Thanks for your comment!
@@ThriftyToolShed Excellent, thanks for your quick reply, that makes complete sense!
@@ThriftyToolShedMy Battery is Overheating - Your comment about the torque limit concerns me. After seeing your video I went out and bought the EGO Power Head with the String Trimmer attachment and 80 Tooth blade from Amazon. After initially cutting just like you were, my battery started flashing and indicated overheating. It wouldn’t let me continue. I paused to let it cool down, but then after 2-3 minutes, had to shut down. Have you had this happen? Did you have power head on Setting 1 or 2? I’m thinking my RPM’s were making the unit overheat. I see that you start and stop in between cuts. Maybe I was going full throttle too much. But only 2 minutes??
I have not had that happen. I assume your pack is blinking orange for over temp? Are you using a 5ah pack? I have only had blinking red which is usually pack depleted. I only use 5ah packs on this set-up and I do just as on video zip through the small ones with ease and on the larger ones, I do give it time in-between. It cuts impressively well, so it's kinda hard not to over do it. I have cut with a 5ah pack for an hour or so just giving it a break in between the larger brush. I am in speed 1 and I also make sure I never press the trigger while it's bound up or when it does get in a bind I try to get off of the trigger quick as possible, that can really pull a pack down rapidly. If all else fails, your needs might require a smaller diameter blade? I personally like the 10" on mine. Some needs may differ.
@@ThriftyToolShed Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, it was blinking orange, and I am using the 2.5ah pack. Just tonight I went out and had better luck with going on speed 1, and throttling the trigger lower and giving it more breaks. I guess I thought that since it was designed for a string trimmer, once the RPM's got going, I wanted to keep it high, to keep the momentum going. I thought the 5ah would provide more longevity, but not more power. I will continue to try this new method on the 2.5ah battery, and switch to the 5ah if needed.
Related question is - does this void the warranty? Seems like the device is not designed for this, so it's got to shorter the life of the unit. You probably don't know how much it degrades the unit, but do you have thoughts on this? (Even if it does, it's still worth it! )
How did you find and install a Push-N-Load head on your ST1500SF?
Some of these vary from the head like this one on mine. I shared this on mine in the video and I like the push n load better than this one shared here. I will add link to that also.

Great video but my Ego is different. First, I had to turn counter clockwise to get the head off. Second, I am not sure there is any brush blade that will fit my Ego. I should have bought a Stil.
You must have the regular EGO string trimmer like the ST1500 not the Powerhead?
Where did you get the blade and adaptor kit?
I should have a link in the video description. Hopefully they are still valid.
I cant get my blade to fit properly. Brought attachment kit to big. St1500 is model number
This is for EGO Power Head.
Not the regular ST1500 string trimmer. I like my ST1500 and even put a different head on it in a separate video. But as mentioned, I would not try the blade on the small ST1500.
That sound is pretty scary. You can feel the power. Do you have to worry about the blade bending?
It felt fine to me. I was showing what it could do. I really will not be cutting the larger stuff with it that often, I have the 16" EGO chainsaw after all. I mainly got it for the vines and small thick brush. I let it kick a little, cut stuff a little too large and of course showing that it did still hold up, even if pushed a little. I was a little concerned when the larger brush/tree lands directly on top after cutting through that it could damage the blade. As far as bending, you will feel the vibration in it I believe when it starts up if bent. It is so smooth I believe you will tell very quick if it happens to get bent.
How long would your battery last if brush cutting?
I always use a 5ah pack and it last the whole time I cut. I rarely need more than 20 mins of cutting or so?
Can you attach Bush cutter on EGO Power+ ST1521S.
I have the same question. Because of our auto line loader this video isn't relevant but I need to be able to find an adapter to use a brush blade.
This is only for the power head attachment. I would not add a blade to the models with the motor in the head. It needs a head like the gas straight trimmers has and shaft driven.
I wanted to know how this battery and electric motor is holding up. I just got one of those egos too and feel kinda uneasy about putting an extra weight load on the electric motor.
Well is it a PH1400 Power head?
There is a difference between the Power head and the ST1500 etc. String trimmers. My power head has held up well for over 5 years now.
@@ThriftyToolShed yeah it's the power head with the line IQ thing that auto feeds as I use it, so no bumping.
@@frydemwingz No. Power head as in PH1400.
@@frydemwingz I think you got the newer power head model 1800?
I have not seen a PH1800. I have seen the PH1420 and I Believe the string trimmer combo may be MST1603?
New models don’t seem to take blades straight on...is there an adapter?
I was not aware of a newer model power head? The ones I have seen have the typical head set-up as gas trimmers would. I would not know what adapter you might need if something has changed.
@@ThriftyToolShed could I send you a picture and maybe you can suggest an adapter?
I can try, I have not seen one myself to know for sure. If you want to send a picture, I will see if it looks familiar. On my channel main page you will see facebook link. You can send pict in messenger if you want or thriftytoolshed@gmail.com
I just bought model st1502sa and the shaft is round with two flats cut on the shaft, there are no splines
@@kenh9208
This is for the power head trimmer guys. Not the standard string trimmer. The small trimmer with the motor in the string trimmer head is not designed for the brush cutters. PH1400 is the power head and you can get multiple attachments including the heavy duty string trimmer head.
Where did you purchase blade
Amazon. I have a link in the video description. Sometimes they are no longer available. Let me know if you have trouble with it.
Can it be used on any ego trimmer
Only the power head model.
wait a minute'... it aint gonna fit the EGO splines, but I already got a spline adaptor on it." What?
This is the power head! PH1400 with string trimmer attachment.
Will this work on the ST1500SF?
Never mind. I just read your description. Thanks
I bought the powerhead 1420 with the sta1600 trimmer attachment. Can't use this trick on that since the trimmer head is the same as the dedicated trimmers. Must have changed it since they found out people were doing this and trying to juice people for more money with their $200 brush cutter attachment.
I did not even realize they started making the Auto loading attachment with the power head. That is good to know. Thanks for sharing!
I have a new Ego String Trimmer St1521S and it didn't come with a socet or an Allen wrench. The internal head assembly looks different than your demo unit. Do you know how to fit a blade on this current model or is it impossible. Thanks.
I only showed it installed on the Power Head. I mentioned that I would not recommend putting the blade on a the standard string trimmer. The ST1521S has the small motor on the head and is not strong enough for the job. The Power Head has the power needed. The trimmer head for this unit is very similar to gas staright shaft trimmers.
@@ThriftyToolShed OK, thanks. I will switch to the other unit as I need a brush cutter more than a string trimmer.
FYI Lowe's, Ace Hardware, and Tractor Supply carry EGO still - 7/2023
Thanks. I knew Lowe's and Ace still do. I was not sure about Tractor supply. They did the last time I was in one.
