Power String Load - EGO's new 56-Volt Cordless 15" Auto-Wind String Trimmer with Carbon Fiber Shaft is the first string trimmer with an auto-wind head, but what does that mean for you? Is it important to you that you can load the line by just feeding in line pushing a button? We took a close look at this head to determine if the reliability is worth the simplicity of feeding trimmer line. More on this later.
The new EGO String Trimmer also has a Carbon Fiber Shaft with a lifetime warranty. What is Carbon Fiber and why do I want it on my string trimmer? First, Carbon Fiber is produced with carbon atoms that are bonded together in crystals that are more or less aligned parallel to the long axis of the fiber. This crystal alignment gives the fiber high strength-to-volume ratio. Several thousand carbon fibers are bundled together to form a tow, which may be used by itself or woven into a fabric. What you see on the handle of the EGO string trimmer is a carbon fiber fabric made into a tube. This use has several advantages including high stiffness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high-temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion. The carbon fiber shaft makes the two piece shaft very stiff with the only real point of breakage being the aluminum joint in the middle. The way it is constructed, it will never bend! NOTE: You can buy this string trimmer, online only, with a one-piece Carbon Fiber shaft so you won't have an aluminum joint.

Auto-Wind Head
EGO did more to the head of this unit than just make it auto-wind the string. When you take a good look at the head, there is a disk on the bottom that will spin independently of the head. This disk is made of metal and allows for the bump feed action to happen with little wear on the head, but also making the bump feed very smooth. Most string trimmers have a plastic bottom that will quickly show wear from bump feeding the string. Clearly, the goal in doing this was to make a long-lasting trimmer head that will not wear on the bottom. Inside the head, there are two spools that hold line independently for each side of the head. The head is easy to disassemble and could be would manually pretty easily if there was ever an issue with the auto-wind.
The auto-wind feature is easy to use and works similar to many of the manual feed heads on the market. Cut off 15 feet of your favorite line, feed the line through one of the eyes on the side of the head until it comes out the other side. Grab the line and pull an equal amount out on each side of the head, then push the button and watch the line feed into the head on its own. There will be some noises as the line feeds and you are able to start and stop feeding the line when you want by letting off the button and pushing it again. A very simple concept that is easy and convenient. We like this feature, but we were skeptical in the beginning. The fact that we can load line manually if this were to fail is important!
POWER
With any battery operated string trimmer, power is important to us. This new EGO string trimmer has the brushless motor located in the head of this unit and provides great power. It does not have the same power as the multi-head unit EGO makes, but it is very close. We were able to trim 12-16 inch grass without issue or without a time-out from the motor.
EGO's string trimmer is priced great for all the features and it is built to last. We don't think you can find a comparable gas unit on the market in the price range. This is another great product from EGO. If you are worried about moving over to a battery-powered trimmer, try this unit out. It will quickly change your mind and let you know that battery powered outdoor power equipment is the future and they are up to par now.
I watch a lot of videos to help me make a decision on a purchase. I am really surprised at how well done and informative this video is. Normally there is a lot of unnecessary discussion, terrible intros and useless information. Thank you for taking the time to do this well. This was a really good video!
Steve yeah, love how succinct & concise he is. No fluff / b.s.
I own the EGO 15 in. string trimmer for 5 yrs. now. Never had a problem with the trimmer. I use a minimum of 3 times a week. Great product! I also own the leaf blower by EGO. I did have a problem with it. It ran for about 30 seconds, then shut off. I called EGO customer service, and instead of fixing it, they send me a new one! Very happy with the products and great customer service as well!
You won't find the customer service to be that way today
Thought I was done purchasing tools until I saw all the improvements made in cordless. Thanks for the info !
This is by far the best string edger gas or electric! Great power great quality easy to load string easy to use.
Picked up this trimmer and the leaf blower a couple weeks ago from local Home Depot. $350ish for the pair. Loving them both. So nice to just pop the battery in and go. Made my final decision based on this video. Thanks a bunch!
Glad you like them and that we could help you!
OMG. This is awesome. I've been trying to figure out how put in the trim and didn't know how easy it was. Thanks
I love mine, I use it in my woods with a full face guard as it will cut limbs and large weeds and throw them several feet. Its to powerful for around a vinyl fence as it will cut into the fencing. Prime example at 59 on your video it appears part of the vinyl was chipped off the house you were trimming. Just purchased the battery self propelled mower, will have it tomorrow.
Ego is the undisputed king of power tools. Any professional knows the name.
LOL
This edger is awesome and feels great when using it. I used to use a Kobalt Weed Edger for a few years now. But what I didn’t like about it was the string was a pain to get in the holes and to make sure the string was snug in the grooves next to the holes. This EGO Weed Edger that’s in your video. I just purchased it a few days ago. A bit expensive but as you said in the video “Well Worth It”. Love how you can just put the string in the holes and just use a automatic button to have the string how you want it. The battery is great from my experience, but also is a problem because you can’t see the battery gauge of how much life is in the battery.
Me too I also hope they will have a battery gauge that will show the hrs and life on the battery before it runs dry. Just like the other brands Stihls, Kobalt, Echo.
It's an impressive unit, I just picked one up from the Home Depot. Battery charges amazingly fast too for the amount of power it packs.
I just bought a home 🏡 and I will get the EGO power mower, trimmer & blower LOL 😂 Nice 👍 thanks 🙏
Nice video! Ego has made some nice improvements to the string trimmer over the last few years.
Midwest Dad They continue to improve and that tells you a lot about the company.
I'm waiting for their trimmer to have auto feed (out) as well, the auto wind is a nice feature but don't care for the bump feed. Guess I got spoiled with Black & Deckers trimmer that auto feeds when it gets torn up and shortens. I got Egos 56V mower and really happy with that.
I really like that auto-winding feature but I like my old 2 cycle Echo gas powered unit.
Excellent tutorial, as always. Not a lot of wasted words - love that
Thank you, great great review. No nonsense, no stupid music.
This review is so good, EGO should pay you for it. But you got my sub cause I like your garage.
Not to be too critical, but I just have to say it. Your string / line will last a lot longer, and the tool will cut a lot faster, if you don't shove the unit all with way up against the object you're cutting around. The line's tips travel a lot faster out towards their ends, and it will keep your line from getting unnecessarily damaged.
Got it. It was very cold and the line was brittle
Great review. I’m in the market for a new string trimmer and am considering moving away from gas. One thing that was confusing, you said, “it will hold 15 feet of line, so cut 7 and half feet...” Does it hold 15 feet or 7.5 feet. Thanks again for your review.
It holds 15, and you need to find the center at 7.5'.
@@WorkshopAddict thank you!
Just assembled one I got from HD for $179. Even though I watched the video, I could not get hinge part to thread correctly. I had to use a hex head in a ratchet screwdriver. I really had to push hard to get it started. I may be off thread a bit. I was surprised since the rest of the assembly went smoothly. Glad I don't have to take it apart though.
Do you have a video about servicing cleaning & regreasing the trimmer head?
I can’t decide between this ego solid carbon shaft or the Milwaukee M18. I’m already steeped in The Milwaukee line up but I don’t mind adding the Ego equipment either. I see them as dual purpose line ups. Anyway, I just bought the Ego 580 blower. Just need to decided which trimmer to get. The Milwaukee feels very nobody and heavy whereas the Ego seems more user friendly and lighter. The shaft seems shorter on the Ego in comparison. I don’t have a monster sized yard but I do appreciate power and quality. Thoughts?
Tough call bud. I like both string trimmers, but here is my recommendation right now. The auto-wind is nice, but not needed. The new EGO trimmers without auto-wind have a quick load system. Milwaukee still does not use the quick load system. For that reason, I would go EGO. That is all I can come up with to help.
one other thing is the milwaukee feels more comfortable and the handle is far superior.
Great review! Would you recommend the split shaft or the straight shaft?
100 percent the straight.
WorkshopAddict good thing I didn’t use the split yet. Returning today. Just wondering, why the straight shaft?
@@aw9nineteen you are eliminating a weak point with the straight shaft
Yeah, the shaft to get is the strait one piece carbon shaft? Which size battery is typically used with their trimmers?
What is your favorite cordless trimmer? I was trying to compare this to the DeWalt 40V 15", I don't have experience with any of the electric cordless trimmers. Any others I should be looking at?
The shaft is not split to stock on the shelves at Home Depot, silly - the shaft is split so you can fit the string trimmer into the trunk of a car. - Not everyone drives a truck or SUV. I use this folding feature quite often for transporting the trimmer, and the aluminum screw hole will not strip out if you use the tool provided and don't over-torque it!
I wish Ego would tell everyone that all of their weed trimmers are not quite, variable speed, (0- 5800 rpms, that's what I would like) as soon as you squeeze the trigger it starts running at 4000 rpms and then is varable upto 5800 rpms. If you need to go slower, up close to tree trunks or flower beds your out a luck.
I have a really bad back. My gas trimmer wears me out. Is this lighter/easier to use?
Not this one. It has an extra motor in the head to wind the string and a heavy battery. Here is the one that should fit you best for weight and balance. ua-cam.com/video/6QwZQ0M3XkU/v-deo.html
I’m strongly considering an EGO string trimmer. I’m wondering if there is a difference in performance between the model with auto feed and carbon fiber shaft and the previous model? I’m trying to decide if i can save $40 if i’m not dead set on those new features. Thanks!
IMHO, stay away from the auto feed, it is just one more thing that will break.
My weedeater is not working some motor replacement head have you ever replace the motor on the head of an ego
Will this model be lighter and more powerfull than the ph1400 multi head with string trimmer attachment
How does this compare to the Milwaukee string trimmer in performance and build quality
Hi and thanks again for your video. I get how to put on the new line. What happens to the old line nub that's left ?
Does this string trimmer rotate in a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation?
I feel like they didn’t put the battery gauge on purpose. In a few years when they have a NEW refurbished model with a gauge maybe it will bring more customers because we all clearly know that Ego is one hell of a product, y’all know what I’m trying to say lol 😂?
how long does it take to charge the battery & what is the highest capacity battery on this?i've have seen your review of dewalt 40v and 60v where you and other users have claimed this to be the best battery trimmer on the market so am thinking of investing in it,,,,much appreciate your help.....
The largest battery, 7.5Ah takes about an hour to charge. The 40 volt dewalt was the best at the time of the video. The most power right now goes to the EGO powerhead model.
It looks like the unit is shorter than the gas Honda I have because you are bent over when trimming. Is that correct?
Yes
Is this multihead where you can switch to the pole saw
Is it still possible to swap attachment heads with this model?
Do you ever wish Brian that this trimmer had more rpms i know no load speed for this trimmer is 5800rpm and the Milwaukee quik lok model max speed for rabbit mode is 6900 rpms do you with this ego unit had 9000 rpm or higher like heavy duty gas models or do you like the 5800 rpm on the ego? @WorkshopAddict
Yes, this is slow compared to gas. That is why I run the Stihl battery trimmers. As I said to you before, do not buy this model.
@@WorkshopAddict thanks for the information appreciated it i will stick with my Milwaukee and my stihl gas kombisystem
Nice! I am going to get one. Screw gas!
Mine won't feed string. Beware!
Do you have to bump it to get more string? Or does it push out string on its own when low?
Yes
WHICH is it?? I want one BUT----------
Your video is titled - ST1521S
Your link is to the - STX3800
Your write up is of - EGO ST1520S
I do not know what happened to the link. Here it is: amzn.to/3bD2SMF The difference between the title and my write up specs is that ones comes kitted with a battery.
I kinda wishh this timmer had the metal trigger like the commercials model that little extra touch of a metal trigger on a consumer model like this would be worth a little extra money what you think Brian @WorkshopAddict
First off I want to say how much I really like these reviews. Other tool reviewers on youtube have simply turned into Home Depot commercials. You take the time to use and really talk about the tools, really appreciate that.
I have the powerhead version, love it. Mine came with the 5.0ah battery and personally I want to find a 2.0 or 2.5 to cut down on the weight. I also have a 7.5ah battery that came with my mower but man, that thing adds a lot of weight to the back of these to be practical.
I don't know about this model. Mine has the manual version of that head and it's pretty darn easy to use so not sure why you would need to add power to it. Maybe if my wife was using it but for me, the manual one is just fine.
I'm hoping for more attachments for the powerhead, a mini snowblower for doing the deck and stairs would be great, I'd also really like to see a 30"-36" mower that uses two 7.5ah batteries.
IMHO, you will not be a huge fan of the 2.5Ah battery on the powerhead. Runtime will be cut back and I feel the 5.0 balances that once out well. I think more attachments are coming soon, but I still personally think they are limited in a way due to the power consumption of some.
I spoke to the EGO people and according to them; it’s best to load the trimmer with 13 ft of string instead of 15 ft!
Michael H Wow, that’s curious. Did they give you a reason? Funny, because I just bought an EGO pre-cut trimmer line coil package of five for this trimmer - each coil is 14 feet.
Bought this trimmer last summer. Worked great till today where it wont run anymore. Cant even load in new wire. Gutted
Yeah, I bought one of these because it's so easy to rewind. I just keep forgetting how the hell that works to rewind it. so I'm back. 😁
Glad it is working for you. Ours stop winding. :(
Me to!!
In your first review of the ego carbob fiber shaft, you mentioned you would review at a later date the same one except the model that didn't have the hinge/split shaft. Were you able to tmdo thst yet? Thanks for great review btw.
WorkshopAddict Were you able to send it back in during the warranty period to get the rewind button fixed?
You had me at carbon fiber...
smrcalidiv Yeah, I think a lot of people will like that!
Where can you buy this trimmer with a one piece shaft no aluminum joint? I cannot seem to find it online.
Nature Rules They are not in the stores yet. We have one on order and will compare them. Subscribe and we will let you know when and where to get them. They will be online only.
Nature Rules The joint is equally as strong if correctly installed. I wouldn't let that make or break your decision. The brushless motor, 5 year warranty, etc... on the other hand though.
@@naturerules3371 It is this one. www.homedepot.com/p/EGO-56V-Lith-Ion-Cordless-Electric-15in-Powerload-String-Trimmer-Carbon-Fiber-Straight-Shaft-Kit-5-0Ah-Battery-Charger-ST1524/304972003
$435 but with larger battery. KInda way more expensive than the $230 model that is foldable.
Great info, but cutting through dead grass and brush is a breeze. I would have loved to see it cut through green thick weeds.
Amazing review Brian been looking at picking this model up see how it compares to the Milwaukee quik lok system love that it has a auto feed motor line loading @WorkshopAddict
Do NOT buy the two-piece model. IMHO, the auto wind head is cool when it works, but that won't last long. Stay with Milwaukee.
@@WorkshopAddict okay thanks brian
That solid straight carbon fiber shaft EGO string trimmer costs $100 more than the model with the 2 piece carbon fiber shaft.
Good review as always
Joe Framer Thanks!
I have one and I get a TON of grass that blows back on me while using it. From neck to shoe. I was using a 40V Lynx before this and it wasn’t nearly this bad. Is the increased grass blowback something I’ll just have to get used to with the bigger battery? I do have the thing assembled as per its manual’s instructions.
It is just the poor design of the EGO.
@@WorkshopAddict I was afraid of that. Well, I guess I’ll just be grassy.
I bought one these. I returned it the next day. I saw that shaft joint and thought I could add the optional tools; i.e. an blade.edger. Not true. Never opened the box. I'll just keep using my older EGO trimmer.
I can see that. EGO does make a very nice Powerhead that you can get a saw and edger for if you wanted that in a powerful battery solution.
Excellent review. Thanks
So the string that currently sticks out of the hub on both sides is only about 2" long. Do I need to replace all 15" cause it's gone or is there a way of letting more string out on both sides?
Dana Dolsen watch this video again, carefully
Does the head spin clockwise or counterclockwise? I'm on the fence between this and the Ryobi 18v brushless. I have .4acres with sidewalks and a fenced in yard. I already have Ryobi high cap batteries so I was going to get just the trimmer for $100. Which would you recommend?
Ryan Fiore did you get one yet? I was on the fence between the two and ive never had a cordless trimmer. Decided last second to get the ego because home depot had a sale right now dropping the price from $229 to $179. Currently having issues right out of the box with either faulty battery, faulty charger, or both. Gotta wait till monday to call customer support
I went with this carbon fiber Ego when I saw the price drop to $179. Figured it was a no brainer for only being $30 more than the Ryobi I was going to get. I also got the 530CFM since that dropped in price. Now I have 2 batteries. 1 is plenty for the trimmer but using the blower I need about 1 and probably half of the 2nd battery, depending on how much I need. No problems so far.
Great review! You covered everything!
Can I wash the power load head off with a garden hose or will it damage the unit
You can no issue
Did you say the new power head model already has a carbon fiber shaft?
If it sounded that way, I did not mean that. The power head model shares the same safety and that is it.
Good Video
If possible try to review the Straight 1 piece shaft
We are trying to get it.
WorkshopAddict Did you get one yet? I saw them on homedepot.com
Ben Varnau yep. $435. I don’t get it...so much more $
How much does this trimmer weigh with the battery?
Can you please review the new stihl 36 volt mower model RMA 510?
Cody Robertson Will try
carbon fiber is thin on cars? don't say that to Lamborghini as there aventador has much.... very good review and thank you as I just ordered one tonight.
Can this use other attachments
No
How long did it run? What is the amp hour of the battery you were using?
In the video, he said 2.5Ah for 30 minutes. [Go to 5:30 into the video.]
I contacted EGO concerning the "split" shaft. You stated the split section is for retail stores display only.
According to EGO rep, no solid shaft carbon fiber available. Just an FYI.

Outstanding!
It’s a bi&ch to manually load the string. my power load feature field after 5 1/2 years of service. I’m sure it’s nothing mechanical it’s electronic failure that cannot be repaired cheaply. i’m almost to the point of scrapping this trimmer. Has a new head, which allows you to manually turn the head and rewind the string. The button auto rewind feature was great wallet lasted, but it’s a pure pain in the you know what when it fails.
Great EGO Vid & Review I'm Ego !#WorkshopAddict
alan j Hornung Thank you
Great review thanks for the work you put into the video brian @WorkshopAddict
Nice job Brian, I have been waiting for this to show up at my HD. Great to see a review on it. #WORKSHOPADDICT
Can you put a Aero Flex head on it?
This is the Rolls Royce of string trimmers.
Chet Koczynski The Tesla of string trimmers.
The Apple…
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
I bought mine new last year. There no button to feed string. I used it until the string got too short. Useless crap and it's heavy.
Sarah Wells I think you got the previous model. Also use a 2.0 or 2.5 battery if it’s too heavy for you, and just switch out the batteries
Is the carbon version worth the upcharge?
No. Its just cool, nothing else.
Great vid! I would like to see that trimmer going up against anther battery powered trimmer. #WorkshopAddict
We will do that! February is not the time. :) LOL...
Please do a walk around video of the shop and cars.
Cody Robertson Not much to walk around, it's so tight! Maybe the spring it would be possible.
Way to nick the siding at :59
Great review. It will get more expensive.
what s the model on this EGO !!??? TRIMMER !!
Very cool
Home Depot no longer carries EGO products. Lowe’s now carries EGO products.
Looks like ego is really trying to eliminate competition
The owners Manual says 13 feet of line !.....not 15
OMG!
They work great, but do not ever need help from the manufacturer, or service or parts or a schematic for a ST 1520S, they do not have it or they will not email it to you. A pain to deal with. They will tell you for work take it to Home Depot but all they do is send it to Georgia and charge you at HD and you might as well buy a new one. I did exactly that and I broke the shaft not I have two new broken shaft models. Never again. There phone numbers chang and they never call you back.
EGO came out with great customer service and has really gone down hill once they caught on with Home Depot.
Bob...are yours the split shaft models connected by a metal elbow? I have heard those are somewhat prone to break at the elbow or connector.
Dragonfly hoping for an answer to this too
They didn't do the follow up video as they promised.
You are right, that product that was promised to us never showed up because it would not handle the abuse they told us it would.
*I have used Stihl for over 20 years 🌴 **allabout.wiki/EGO** and after reading some reviews of this trimmer, I tried EGO Power+ , and I'm going to switch. Compared to several Stihl trimmers I've had, this one is easier to start, quieter, and feels at least as well built . A major plus is it doesn't have the wonky, always leaking, complicated gas tank caps that Stihl has.*
Ego makes great stuff! #WorkshopAddict
They do. I am waiting to for the battery fuel gauge though.
Agreed! It can be a real pain in the butt always guessing what your level is
Especially when you run the snowblower. :) Forgive my venting here. Snowblower takes two batteries to finish my driveway. I come in, drop one on the charger, forget to charge the second one. Push the fuel buttons, both are green, go out to snowblow and come up short on battery life because of my crappy memory. LOL
hahaha, luckily I don't have that issue in Florida!
WorkshopAddict ha! Get more sleep?
You're not going to buy it at Home Depot. Home Depot no longer sells EGO products. For EGO products you'll need to go to Lowes or Ace Hardware.
If you're working on the head, take the battery out. Lol.
Austin This unit has a third safety switch that will not allow the unit to turn on when working on the head. No need to.
It was so long and so heavy that I had to return it to Ace. Women, beware! Excellent product, no doubt, but way too powerful and heavy for the female home gardener.
Less than 2 years old having issues with automatic wind... errr
I threw it in the dump.
