Was anyone else really annoyed when that woman kept trying to push more sweets on the girl while mom kept saying "no, just the one". "Oh but it is almost Christmas", "can she take some more home?". The mother said no, it's a no. Of ALL places to understand that this girl doesn't need any more sweets and respect the mother, the physician's office should be that place.

@@BeckBeckGoactually that is likely not true. I grew up with a girl with PWS and our families were very close. People with PWS can gain weight on as little as 600 calories a day. It’s easier for parents to control as a child, but as they grow up and gain some independence, they can’t be watched constantly. That’s when they can eat in secret, and is so much harder to control x
@@BeckBeckGo Her limit is 900 calories a day. She has plenty of time to 'cheat', as her father says, and he can't watch her 24 hours a day. Especially when both of them work full-time.
I was thinking that too...he might be dangerous to his family with his attitude like that...i think it's not a crime if he wud be locked up for his own health benefits as well as his for his family...
I think this, too. The first look at him shows the pure violence in his eyes - this has nothing to do with his PWS = THIS GUY IS VERY DANGEROUS !!! His family would not have a single chance to escape from him, if he'll attack them ... for sure his mum says he needs love - but sometimes love should be tough ... poor family !!
You are right - but nevertheless he seems to be very very violent and dangerous ... for sure it's the family who has to deal with this > but I am scared !! I hope they find a way to be safe ...
PWS or not, Sachin is abusive towards his family. While special considerations should be made for people with disabilities on a case by case basis, abuse is still abuse, and is never okay. The family should not have to deal with that, and the boy needs to be sent to a faculty where he can learn proper behavior.
I agree but the thing is, what if he can't be controlled? He's abusive when he doesn't get his own way and when he's "normal". I'm not an expert but I think you can't control his behaviour. It's too dangerous.
South Asians see care homes as basially throwing away their family and family is part of their culture. Also, that culture is known for caring for their elderly.
I met a mom with 11 year twins with PWS. We were hiking in Hawaii and gave them a short ride to the trail. The mom kept her daughters ACTIVE swimming and hiking to help combat the negative effects of the disorder. She was a lovely mom with difficult conditions
I don’t like how you’ve emphasised active as if that’s the cure. Most of them have low muscle tone and can’t do much, they also are uncontrollably hungry 24/7, they cannot ever control themselves around food and see non-edible items out of hunger. It’s a lot more complicated.
I was in a special ED program with someone with Prader Willis Syndrome (I have Autism+Adhd). She did a lot of crafting when she wasn't at her program assigned job. We'd often ride home together. She was one of the kindest people I have ever gotten the pleasure of knowing. She moved on to a different program for older young adults while I stayed in my current program and am now in the process of starting college. I still think about her some times, and this documentary reminded me of her.
Rebeccas Mom needs to remove all junk food and sweets in the house for the sake of the whole family and not just Rebecca. I really give Kate props. I just want to give her a hug. She is really doing what she can to manage herself. I think Kate should join a sport or class to get more exercising and socializing in. Kate is in such a good spirit for having a disorder that makes it hard to deal with yourself.
I agree. Shes eleven and even if she has disabilities she can Express herself and feel emotional. I am the same way only with high functioning autism and I'm given social places to go. And a place to work at a daycare. When people say that I can't feel sad or angry, they are wrong. Some of us don't want to have what we have but we live with it.
She isn't managing herself when she's put on three stones in ten months and can't go 24 hours where her food is controlled. She's fooled herself into believing she can control it, when she clearly cant. She'll continue to gain until she's forced into a home where her food is controlled. Life isn't fair but that's how it goes.
If you know she already has so many issues, why make it worse by having things like soda and chips in the house? Why not only have water to drink and only healthy snacks? It's A LOT harder to get way too many calories when all you have is carrots and celery than if you have soda and chips and cookies....
They will turn to shoplifting. They won't steal anything of value but they will steal soda and food. You could fill the house with water and fruit and veggies but if they want a hamburger they will get it somehow.
It's a condition. They have anger issues ( tantrums? Correct me if it's wrong, I'm still learning English) And the behavior of a child no matter their age. They are often rude, abusive etc. just to get what they want. Even if they are hospitalized and they have a ''no'' for a year or even 20 years the day they get out they will get whatever they want. Katy is indeed the one with manners probably because no matter what she does she still gets what she wants. She learned that by behaving nice and polite she will get what she craves.
I feel bad for Katie she's an angel and all she wants is to be independent and to have children and a normal life she's so precious she and she's trying so hard
Trying hard? She's eating rabbit food when anyone's watching, and stuffing her face with muffins and chocolate bars when she's alone, and can't even go for 24 hours without snacks when she's in a care home. That's not trying, that's delusion.
Gonken88 when i first saw your comment i just thought you were hateful. but i’ve rewatched this video multiple times & i kinda have to agree. she’s all sweet & nice as long as she’s getting her way. and the scene with tamara really opened my eyes, that proved that some people can acknowledge that they have a problem and simply can’t live independently. couldn’t be katie tho.

Alex James--She actually can go into a special program...it's just going to be hard. She demonstrated that to a small degree when she visited the one. Her situation definitely was not the best for her, but it is such a difficult Syndrome to manage. Her parents need support too.
Ria for me it's the same but it's my metabolism I'm like a rocket engine when I eat I burn the energy very fast and within 2-3 hours I'm hungry again but here's the good thing about it I don't gain weight in fact I lose
Choir Fandom Cooking Rants and Random Channel did anyone ask you? Your comment is completely irrelevant to this entire topic about Katie's Dad. Good for you I guess but you may have a fast metabolism that's not always gonna last forever just make sure your getting appropriate nutrients and proper portions. If you don't then by the age of 35 your metabolism would've slowed and you become overweight or obese or you will suffer other issues internally.
Choir Fandom Cooking Rants and Random Channel not to mention your case of having a fast metabolism is normal for most people between the ages of 13-30 it's just a part of growing up. Most people's metabolisms at this age are very fast but for others it may be slower.
Honestly it's not murder if you just I dunno....accidentally leave the fridge unlocked. Katie isn't a bad girl because she gets to do whatever she wants without getting in trouble. I feel bad for her family, she is spoiled. Her parents allow her to eat whatever and when seeing her gain weight they just say "oh well". She is not used to having her food ACTUALLY controlled for her so when it actually came down to it when she went to that house, she became a brat. If her family controlled her diet properly she most likely would be exactly like the other two. The other two gets agressive when they don't get what they want and the guy's anger can't be controlled. He is abusive to his family and I have no trouble believing that he'd kill anyone who gets in his way. I'd just let those kids eat themselves to death. It's what they want soooo... (PWS is fascinating, I always watch if it comes in my recommendation. )
Rebecca is just a child, people shouldn’t be so harsh to her. She isn’t well educated, and she doesn’t understand things like another child. I also bet other children aren’t nice to her and that must be part of why she is so agressive. I feel really bad for her.
My heart goes out to Katie, she really is trying her best... what makes me smile about her is the fact she’s saying she wants a child and she is kinda living independently 🤗! Let’s hope u really could make a change !
I’m not sure about mentally defective people. However, for addicts who are mentally normal otherwise, this is a total cop out. There is no “a bad and a good you,” it’s all you. You did bad things, don’t blame them on a fictional other you. You have character flaws in you, regardless if you are high or not.
What it means is that sometimes the self discipline isn't there, and instead of admitting that, there are two of the same person. It's classical, typical denial.
I really hate how they paint Sachin's behavior as just PWS. It paints others with it as horrible people who cannot control their emotions at all. Literally threatening to SUE your mother for a genetic condition you were born with, putting hands on family, and the other verbal abuse can't be excused just because he's disabled. You can be disabled and still a narcissistic POS on the side.
I agree Sachin's behavior is wrong, but he likely doesn't have the mental capacity to evaluate right from wrong. He behaves that way because his family allows it and it gets him what he wants.
@@marywynne7931 he can clearly communicate and understand definitions of words as well as legal processes like suing. He's absolutely capable of evaluating his behavior and empathizing with others, he just doesn't want to because he is a bad person.
@atlaskat7980 The mental processes used to evaluate word definitions are far different from the ones used to empathize and regulate one's behavior. While I agree he should he held accountable for his behavior, consequences need to be swift and short-term. No point turning a mentally-disabled person into a career criminal.
Sachin is not the child they started with. He has turned into a crazed and dangerous man. He needs to be in an institution. I know he is their child, but there are limits, and family safety has to come ahead of his wants.
Yup he at least needs to be drugged up so he is more docile. He is a dangerous man with a short fuse and shows no empathy. Violence would come too easily for him and he wouldn’t have the ability to control it.
@@evolutionaryadvantage He cant be institutionalized until his parents give consent I agree that they should have him institutionalized because they cannot control him as much as they maybe could 15 years ago.
For those wondering, in August 2020 Sachin Vyas went missing, but was later found alive and safe by the police. He is now 41. This is the latest piece of information about him online.
Perhaps he just decided to leave and not tell his family. He doesn't treat his family well & it's sad to see how they live like prisoners in their own home.
That nurse should not be offering candy to Rebecca. And why on earth would she encourage Rebecca to take a lot. The nurse really did cross the line and disrespect the mother. How many times did the mother have to say, 'no, just one'...
9:56 I stopped at this exact moment to find a comment that was as equally annoyed by the nurse as i am. Why did she continue to undermine the mother like that. You shouod always check in with parents and respect their word. I also feel like she was being malicious with it bc she would have seen how big the girl was. To me she was saying like "i know you want more" and dangling it in front of her
41:32 that girl seems like a really sweet kind friend the way she tried to comfort Katie when she said “Everybody feels hungry” in a tone to try and let Katie know she’s not alone
I don’t hate Sachin and I truly wish him nothing but the best; he didn’t choose to have PW. With that said, I don’t think it’s safe for him to stay where he is. His parents and sister could be seriously hurt and that’s just no way to live.
I feel so so sad for Sachin's sister at 36:00. Imagine living with an older(?) brother so aggressive and blinded by his own self interest that your elderly parents can hardly cope and then have him turn on you too. She must feel so neglected poor thing.
34:25 Look at him. Hes siroiusly ill, and this is his answer. No benefits for that unacceptable behaviour. I have problems with my weight since childhood and if i do not change my behaviour the insurance company will not pay for the treatment associated with the treatment of my weight. I know he is ill, but he is basically killing himself. It might be drastic, but somone, even with force must change his behaviour. I know one man, who was close to death because of these problems. Sadly, this is boy is on the same way.
9:23 this behavior is highly inappropriate. Not only is the nurse trying to make mom out to be the bad guy, she is completely disregarding that giving sweets can be a detriment to Rebecca's health, and she's ignoring a clear boundary that was set. That's simply not acceptable from a healthcare provider.
900 calorie limit??? Holy crap. I couldn’t even do that. I love food. But at least Katie has some way to control it so she can live. That’s gotta be hard.
So you don't have anything constructive to say, just shut up lol? My comment is valid and there is nothing wrong with it. Katie is the one I feel the most sorry for, her parents tried to set her up to do the impossible and in the end they did the most damage to her because when she does end up in a place like Haddock House it will be more traumatic for her than many because she's been told her whole life she could do something nobody with PWS can. Now she thinks she has a strong willpower and in reality she has no more than the others. Yes, once she passed up the junk food and got her tea...but the other times she practically ate the wrapper off of her muffin and had a wafer biscuit with her lunch, and while those things seem insignificant for a lot of people, in a person with a 900 calorie a day max diet a 100 calorie cookie or a 300 calorie muffin is huge...and look at all the junk in her room...I'd love to see her dreams of being on her own come true, but she would die if she truly had any real freedom.
Jess B right? I DRINK that in wine calories some days. Lol. I feel terribly for these kids. It’s not their fault. It must tear their parents hearts out. You see that most of their parents are divorced. Probably too hard a situation to handle day in and day out while staying on the same page to the person they were married to. Sigh. My heart goes out to each of them
Hard to decide what's more heartbreaking...Katie holding on to hope so doggedly about living independently and beating this condition, or the beaten-down weariness and pain on the faces of Sachin's parents.
it's not a buffet, it's a restaurant with a salad bar. i get it but they probably did it bc its the only place they have half a chance of finishing a meal before she freaks out like she ultimately did bc she has food right away. since she's with other carers a few nights a week i personally think for the sake of the other kids and everyone else paying for a peaceful meal they should have gone while she was away but on the other hand she doesn't deserve complete isolation from family life...it's hard to know where to draw the line but with what the mother said had there not been a salad bar she wouldn't have waited for the food to be cooked let alone stood half a chance at letting the rest of her family eat even a bit of their meal. that whole night was done wrong though in my opinion. if they took her they should have brought her something to do like a hulk video game or given her fruit to eat after dinner so the others could finish and once she started yelling someone should have taken her to the car so everyone there didn't have their meal ruined by her loud screaming tantrum
What Itsa Secret said, but also I assumed so she would get "full" on the buffet and not rack up the bill in a non-buffet restaurant. This girl will cost her parents thousands in only 1 night if not more...she has no limit.
yea I really like her too! I felt really sorry for her because she couldn't really fulfill her dreams of living independently and having kids because of PWS. She has the mind of any healthy human being. Of working hard, earning and spending your own money and one day having a family!
does anyone have an update on her? I read somewhere in the UA-cam section an update about Rebecca. Her sister said she is 23 now and is in a home with other people who also have PWS and that she has lost weight and is doing well. I hope Katie is doing well too. She should be about 35 years now considering this episode was recorded in 2004

i feel so sad for her too, she said she wanted kids but because of PWS, ger dreams are shattered..... She is so sweet and she deserves everything she wants
Tamara (from the care home) seems to really understand what her situation is, Katie seems a nice person but she is insanely naive, also I cannot imagine how she would ever raise a child of her own if she can't even take care of herself.

Katie is, unfortunately, hopelessly naive in her delusion that "strong willpower" is all it takes. If she possessed ANY willpower and demonstrated it then she wouldn't have been sent to try out the home for PWS victims.

Sachin's attitude sucks. He is such a bully. His parents are advising him for his own benefit and in return they get threats and they are afraid of him. What a way to say thanks to people that loves and cares for you
Tabina, people with disabilities deserve a community inclusive life. Just because someone faces challenges in life, doesn't mean they deserve to be institutionalized. That's a cruel existence. I'm in Canada, and here the government funds shared homes for individuals with development disabilities (PW being one of them), so that once someone is an adult, they can live with trained workers in a shared home. They can remain part of the community, have daily workers to take them swimming, volunteering and other activities, even a little job somewhere, and the families get to have their lives back and see their kids in a relaxed way without the stress. Being disabled doesn't make them less worthy of a life with dignity.
@Becky Bloomer you're right, it is disgusting that the best part of you dripped down your mom's leg, yet she still chose to curse this world by bringing you into it.
So...if Rebecca has 2 nights a week away from home... WHY THE HECK DOESN'T THE FAMILY GO OUT TO DINNER ON THOSE NIGHTS?! Seriously. You have two nights a week where you don't have your child with PWS. A restaurant is not a good place for those with PWS. And obviously it's a whole ordeal to bring her. I give Katie’s parents so much credit. Their remarkable co-parenting relationship and effort is what helped her be so smart and independent.
I’m not convinced that either parent understands how to live a low calorie lifestyle.
They’re clearly going well over their standard 2k a day.

Hard to decide what's more heartbreaking...Katie holding on to hope so doggedly about living independently and beating this condition, or the beaten-down weariness and pain on the faces of Sachin's parents.
id say both...but a little of sachin's parents
Katie wanting a family made me so sad
I cried for her.

Wow those poor parents, I really couldn't cope with that.
Ok, why would you take someone with this condition to a buffet to eat?
it's not a buffet, it's a restaurant with a salad bar. i get it but they probably did it bc its the only place they have half a chance of finishing a meal before she freaks out like she ultimately did bc she has food right away. since she's with other carers a few nights a week i personally think for the sake of the other kids and everyone else paying for a peaceful meal they should have gone while she was away but on the other hand she doesn't deserve complete isolation from family life...it's hard to know where to draw the line but with what the mother said had there not been a salad bar she wouldn't have waited for the food to be cooked let alone stood half a chance at letting the rest of her family eat even a bit of their meal. that whole night was done wrong though in my opinion. if they took her they should have brought her something to do like a hulk video game or given her fruit to eat after dinner so the others could finish and once she started yelling someone should have taken her to the car so everyone there didn't have their meal ruined by her loud screaming tantrum
What Itsa Secret said, but also I assumed so she would get "full" on the buffet and not rack up the bill in a non-buffet restaurant. This girl will cost her parents thousands in only 1 night if not more...she has no limit.
@@arcticwarrior3499 very true

Arctic Warrior She doesn’t get full due to the genetic abnormality of PWS.

shes perhaps the only one who is really trying.
All she wants is her freedom to live alone and raise a family. But her illness keeps her prisoner. It's so sad

yes she is so nice and she's trying very hard
does anyone have an update on her? I read somewhere in the UA-cam section an update about Rebecca. Her sister said she is 23 now and is in a home with other people who also have PWS and that she has lost weight and is doing well. I hope Katie is doing well too. She should be about 35 years now considering this episode was recorded in 2004
Katie is so sweet, I hope she achieves her dreams and overcomes her food cravings.
She is inspirational.

I feel soooooooooooooooo bad for Katie. She's such a sweet person but she has to deal with such a hard disability. I hope that even if the disability prevents her to live on her own, that she will be able to curb her her eatting habits and live life to the full. :)

Nyaan Vegan, I agree with you so much
i feel so sad for her too, she said she wanted kids but because of PWS, ger dreams are shattered..... She is so sweet and she deserves everything she wants
Good to see I'm not the only one ;)
Tamara (from the care home) seems to really understand what her situation is, Katie seems a nice person but she is insanely naive, also I cannot imagine how she would ever raise a child of her own if she can't even take care of herself.
She is not “insanely naive”. What a horrible and insensitive thing to say!! Did you not pay attention when they said PWS does not affect only hunger and weight?? It also affects intellectual and emotional development.
@@songbirds3712 it's the truth. She is Niave in the worst way possible. I came from special needs and eventually weened off medical care. Some people need hope. Her hope is not gonna happen in this life but hopefully God give her a better one.
@@songbirds3712 do you not think a person who is unable to take care of herself to think that she can eventually take care of a child is naive?
Tamara has really grown. Her last appearance in a documentary, she did what she wanted, ate what she wanted, and wasn't the least bit concerned that she gained weight.
Here, she understands her condition and knows she can't live independently and that she was close to dying.
Katie is, unfortunately, hopelessly naive in her delusion that "strong willpower" is all it takes. If she possessed ANY willpower and demonstrated it then she wouldn't have been sent to try out the home for PWS victims.
This just makes me want to take care of myself better....

Sachin's attitude sucks. He is such a bully. His parents are advising him for his own benefit and in return they get threats and they are afraid of him. What a way to say thanks to people that loves and cares for you
Sachin should be placed in an institution for the safety of the rest of the family.
Tabina Moneta exactly
They should just kick him out... That $80 a week once spent on rent will restrict his food budget.
Hilary C well that's Canada not all places will be like that ok and he is a danger to his family but see your point of view
Yep asap!

Two nights a week you could go out to dinner.
Ugh. Sorry. Just hate when people are so thoughtless.
They must have done that just for the show
@@carmenolivia6589 I'd like to believe that. But the mom talks about how she "loves this place because she can get something to eat before the food comes." And they speak about her meltdown in the restaurant like it happens often enough that they're used to it.
So while I'd like to think they did it for the cameras, it plain to see they're not doing what's best for Rebecca emotionally.
