- In a country where people can own two or three homes, these are the stories of those who don’t have one.
All three girls and their families have endured the emotional trauma of being thrown out of their homes. With nowhere to go they are absorbed into the hidden world of bed and breakfasts, hotels, safe houses and temporary accommodation. With all of their belongings locked away in storage the girls are literally left with the clothes they stand in.
Living in overcrowded and cramped conditions often miles away from school and friends, the fate of homeless families falls to anonymous council departments who judge and decide if they deserve to be helped and housed. If they are found “Intentionally Homeless” then the Council can remove them from its homelessness statistics, and no longer has a responsibility to house them beyond 28 days in a B&B. Shelter and other charities have seen that the numbers found “intentionally homeless” have increased considerably since central government instructed Councils to “reduce homelessness”.
Meanwhile the impact on families and children are devastating. The children in particular face isolation, social exclusion and bullying; they may also miss months of schooling.
Home is something we don’t fully appreciate until it is taken away, its not until this happens that you understand just how important it really is, and how bleak and terrifying life can be with No Home.

When the father took off the posters and said 'hes lost too much' about his son, my heart broke into a million pieces. He is as strong as a lion, a real father.

Not all homeless people are scumbags. I worked for 30 years until I got sick and lost everything I worked so hard for and became homeless. Nobody knows what's around the corner. it's been 2 years and my son and I are still in emergency accommodation waiting for housing. Never in a million years did I think I would be in this situation. It really can happen to anyone so don't be so judgemental people because one day it may be you.
Aussie Chic Agree. People think that their life will be picture perfect for the rest of their lives....but thats far from true. You could get into an accident or suffer a heart attack.
What did you learn? What would you have done differently? Would you have bought a long-term disability policy? Maybe a healthy fear of being homeless when you were not homeless would have resulted in a different outcome.
People do not realize until they go through it themselves. Some people will never realize but think they realize by watching. I feel for the families. Some life situations can land you in the cracks of life and screw your life up and feel like no way out.

Aussie Chic very true statement my dear I couldn't say it better myself I live in America and rent is very high I'm in a good place right now but before it gets worse I'm thinking of getting the van and making that my home and then that will save me you should try to get the van and living it live off the grid
That dad is what REAL dad's are about. The support he gives his kids is unbelievable. My heart breaks for all of them.
hmmm...interesting POV. I think REAL dads (and mums) get a freakin' job and pay their rent/mortgage. What is this dude doing all day? Comforting the emotional wreak of a mum. How about look for a job in the meantime?

If he worked while his wife was mentally unwell and couldn’t cope, the children would’ve most certainly have gone into foster care eventually and as someone abused in that system myself, I can attest to the fact it’s a terrible place to be.
As a psychotherapist, I’m sad to see such a lack of empathy or understanding from you both, it must be wonderful to be perfect!

I love that dad. Especially when he keeps saying one more bite like 7 times. Total parent move. He got her to eat so much more with that clever trick. He’s definitely holding that whole family together. Just hope they get everything they need and deserve.
All of these people through no fault of their own, have found themselves homeless, seem to be such solid, decent people. The problem is the system, and the way the authorities lack real purpose to rectify the situation. You would expect that they would take a real look at the situation; the determination of the father to support his ff mily
family, and do everything possible to help an obviously, genuinely good family unit.
Why isnt it their fault? Their choices and decisions have consequences.
40 years ago, these families would have a council house...... but of course they've all been sold off. One of the worst of Thatchers policies which still has an impact now.

And as an American, this documentary is an amazing and foreign concept: that a homeless shelter/center can take the counsel to court for letting a family with children be homeless for a night...That’s so far from what we have here IDK if I should be happy for these families or nauseous with envy, or resentful of Mr Columbus..or all 3... this reminds me of when I was pregnant with my son and worked FT right up 3 days up until his birth (not at a desk, either-I was a bartender) and returned 3.5 weeks later due to the whole “if I don’t work I don’t get paid” thing ). I was told that in the UK the Mother AND Father (?!) are given several weeks paid leave(?!) regardless of what type of work they do to be able to acclimate to being parents(?!) and actually Bond (?!?!) with their children(?!) as a family (?!?!). I’d like to thank this documentary for Reminding me to renew my passport this yr...
All that being said: my heart aches for Charlotte-being barely a teenager and suffering from constant fear of being punished by CPS for hitting hard times. THAT seems like a very unfortunate thing that we have in common..hearing her and her father’s fears have MY heart racing..
It’s amazing and quite sickening some of these comments on here wow!! My mum is a beautiful strong amazing woman. She has over come her illness and is doing amazing.
Bet half of these vile comments are off people that have never been in a desperate situation not noting were your going to sleep at night.

I’ve rarely cried during a documentary but that father tracing down his son’s pictures just put me over the edge.

That man is truly the definition of what a father should be. What an incredible human being. I truly hope their family are doing better and are happy. It’s atrocious there are people going through times like this in first world countries.

Charlotte's father is a REAL DAD.
He hasn't given up on his very sick wife, he did everything he could to keep his family together and hid children out of "care." And finally, after what? almost 2 years? He did it - he got his family back into a house. I would be proud to have a friend like him.
Bad things happen to people, and the measure of a decent society is how we care for our most vulnerable members. Unfortunately social services are not oriented towards keeping men with their wives and children!
And WHAT ON EARTH does it mean to call people "intentionally homeless?" That is just crude and nasty.
The 'intentionally homeless' label was invented by Thatcherite bureaucrats who themselves are 'intentionally' molly coddled by government largess
Tina being homeless causes mental health problems. You are so right. I wish more people were as decent as you are.
Unfortunately there are a small amount of people that do not pay rent intentionally, get evicted and then try and claim a house of the council. If it can be proven that they had the means, did something illegal (in this case the family s friend housed them illegally) or that they had no intention of trying to sort it out (by avoiding all contact and not replying to letters etc) it is deemed they are intentionally homeless and even with children, are not eligible for housing benefits.
And that sadly spoils it for the rest of them that are in genuine need.

The other day I was complaining that it was cold in the house so I just went and turned the heat up, then I watched this. Seeing that girl with chattering teeth sitting in the cold with her family, having no where to go, made me burst into tears. I take so very much for granted. It’s so sad and heartbreaking for these families.
Indeed we forget how lucky we are.
This man is amazing. What a fantastic father and husband he is. The way he’s supporting his wife through her depression is so admirable. I hope this family are doing ok now 💔

Bless the dad... he's trying so hard to keep his family together. Perhaps the hard choice would be to put the younger ones into care and then go from there. Get his wife that help and then go forward. Once he can find a home they can get those kids back. Surely there is a way. I hope it works out for them , I really do.
I find the young man who is the father of the five kids (whose partner and mother to their children is so heart-breakingly ill with depression) positively extraordinary in his commitment to his family. What a remarkable man.

One can be depressed or in despair in a difficult life situation without the symptoms of clinical depression. Respect, people in the world nowadays especially the western world are so naive and probably will not miss the water before the well is suddenly dry.
To refuse a child their medicine is beyond cruel. I have asthma and I can't even imagine not having the medicine that helps keep me alive.😰
“Intentionally homeless” yet it was the government who caused them to loose the house? Gosh I’m glad I live in Australia. While we do have a homeless problem, it is no where near to the scale of other countries and our homeless have much more options available. This made me so mad! I cannot believe people are treated this way in a country that’s royal family can hold a £25M royal wedding!!
You hit the nail on the head! Utterly disgusting. The Conservative party who are in government in the UK only care about the healthy and the wealthy. Whilst people were losing their businesses during COVID and confined to their homes, couldn't even see their dying loved ones our so called Government were partying it up breaking every rule they made! What's done about it NOTHING! Every one of those politicians should be in jail. People are living in these conditions in 21st Century Britain is disgraceful and every politician should be ashamed but they don't care.

@@kazania7653 yes in the recent months here unfortunately rent has gone through the roof after covid causing an issue, but there are many government funded housing projects in play and being built right now to try to combat it. Unfortunately covid has hit aus hard, just like everywhere else causing alot of people to have to sell their investment properties and so forth and demand is currently outweighing resource. Though homeless here are much better taken care of and even though some are living in tents, they are given free food, tents, blow-up or foam mattresses, bedding, clothes, shoes, personal care items amongst alot of other things for free. There shouldn't be a homeless crisis in ANY country in the first world at all. Though we tend to treat our homeless a lot differently to alot of other places in the world and even now with our "crisis" the percentages of homeless are far lower still than most other western countries.
I JUST finished watching like a 7 video series on how bad it is in Australia as well. That's actually how I came across this video. People living in sheds, IF they're lucky, or living in the bush...it's crazy! Huge families of 7 or more kids living in someones garage! It was really difficult to watch because those people had the same exact stories like the people in this video.
😮 THAT man is literally carrying his entire family (children and wife 5ppl) on his shoulders. Kids aged 3-16, with a mother that is not mentally available to help out. This man needs an platinum award. Father

The mother needs mental health/ medications and then to get a job. Same as the 16 yr old. Family should work together.

This is what a true man is. He stands through good and bad times and does not hide out..he goes through it all with them until the fight is over..love how he comforts the children and his woman..

Should be illegal, if you pay the rent you can have whoever you want stay for a while, what harm does it do? Hope those self important landlords get their comeuppance.
I worked for a hotel that would take in women and their children from the women's shelter when they were full. I would always buy snacks for the kids from the vending machines and even a lot of our guests would. I worked night shift so a lot of the times the mother's would sit in the lobby and talk to me. I hugged many women and cried with them. But always told them how proud I was of them for leaving their abusers and would give them a list of resources in the town that could help them. People need to have more compassion. I will never tell someone how to handle a situation I have never been in myself because I do not know how I would handle it if I were in it. It doesn't take much to be nice to people ❤️

This doc deserves an update,not only for the families shown but also as a general update on the homeless crisis in the UK
This is utterly heartbreaking. This was 16 years ago and nothing has changed. Housing should be a fundamental human right - the way these people are treated is so incredibly dehumanising and unfair. I hope their lives have improved as time has passed. These are all intelligent emotionally astute human beings, they're no different from anyone else yet they have to endure stress most of us luckily could never imagine.

That would be such a simple way to explain this away. I agree the situations depicted here are dehumanising and unfair, but how can housing be a fundamental human right? That notion is illogical. In modern times, there are simply too many people in the world and not enough habitable land, which is causing not only these problems, but climate problems, yet nobody wants to speak about it, because the real solution is so unspeakable. It doesn't make the reality any less true.
People worldwide are choosing to have kids with either no or limited means to support them. They give no regard to the eventual consequences on either themselves, or the planet. Nothing is a human right, we are just animals, like all the others. "Human rights" are just made up by well meaning but misguided unrealistic people. The more the idea of human rights is pushed, the more poorly educated people suffer because they believe the narrative and think their acts are without consequence. The irony is, by promoting those ideas en masse in an uncontrolled way, it's creating more and more human suffering worldwide. Famine, lack of housing, lack of education, it's been a global issue for decades and despite countless billions thrown at the situation, it gets worse and worse. The next big (massive) thing is going to be water, not housing. There isn't enough to go around. Is water a human right too? Try telling that to the planet, which has a finite amount of it.
I feel so entirely sorry for the kids in this equation, because all the made up human rights in the world don't give them a better actual existence. They didn't ask to be born. The can gets kicked down the road by so called "humanitarians". Nobody in power wants to tackle the actual root causes, they just want to pretend they care, win votes and bank the cash.
A true humanitarian is looking 50-100 years from now, not at oil or petroleum products, but at water, or rather the lack of it.

Me too. Although I am not sure, if I could really say, this could never happen in my ccountry. Homeless people here are always elder single men. Never heard of families being homeless.
This father is the literal glue holding this family together. I pray for this entire family and that things get easier for all of them. And that mental health gets better as well ❤️

Yes he is a "good dad/husband" but many are praising him as a " Saint" which is fine but in my mind that's what a husband/father is SUPPOSED to do....I mean marriage vows are for better/ worse, richer/poorer, etc....he should be THE NORM...but being praised for being what he is supposed to be by following his roles with Integrity. Sad Society has come to praising a man for doing what men are supposed to just DO...

@@lumilabonte3980 it SHOULD be the norm, but it's not. That's why people make comments like that and praise him for doing everything he did. Most people would have said screw it and leave the situation. Unfortunately, people are very selfish and they don't care about how they treat others. I understand exactly what you mean, but sadly, this isn't the norm, so when people see it, they are pleasantly surprised.

I struggled with postpartum depression for two years after the birth of our daughter, and I would, quite frankly, rather feel physical pain than go through that again. My husband picked up so much slack while helping me care for our baby. I can't imagine having to parent other children and face poverty and homelessness as well. I hope that mother was able to get on medication and find some government-funded counseling program.
I find it a little bit frustrating when parents complain about their child’s “terrible asthma”, and then they both smoke inside the house.
For the school to say “we are not responsible” about charlottes schoolwork being sent to her is absolutely repulsive. They are responsible. If a family is calling to ask to have it sent, they are taking responsibility on their end... for the school
To say no is them NOT fulfilling their responsibilities. Horrific.
Yeah that’s common for houseless kids or not. I almost failed high school due to being put into independent study with my public school because I medically could not go.
Just asking a teacher to send me a packet of the papers they regularly printed each week , FOR ME TO PICK UP, they wouldn’t.
So I left and went to the continuation school in my town…. In which all my teachers from my previous school told me that no one would hire me and I wouldn’t get into school if I did that. Instead, I went and I graduated 8 months before my peers.

Because of the way schools are organized/funded they're legally mandated to only accept students with a fixed address within a given area. What they're really saying there is "we can't because that student no longer qualifies to be enrolled here." (but does qualify to be enrolled at a school where they currently live)

The father is a GREAT man. I feel the mother needs to get some help so that she can overcome her illness. God bless that family. I hope they are doing better in year 2020.

When there's even people with full time jobs now homeless because they cannot afford housing it's not the individuals fault it's the governments!
Sometimes I feel despair for the state our world (I live in New Zealand) is in. Covid only made homelessness worse. When I was well I was a foster Mum and school teacher so I felt like I made a difference but being bedridden I feel useless in terms of helping others in this way.

This absolutely devastated me. This man reminds me a lot of my husband and the weight he carried caring for me and our son. I really do wish this family all the love, health and blessings in the world. Heartbreaking and no one helping them. The system is so broken.
I couldn't believe a pro bono lawyer was going to take the council to court if it didn't put up funds to house people. Just incredible that the world has come to this. You think the developing countries suffer from corruption, but it's rife in developed countries now.

I really hope these families are all doing well. We're now in temporary accommodation, a ground floor studio property, with a small kitchen & bathroom. I'm extremely grateful to my son's teacher, as this annexe is on her property, & she's let it to us xx
I felt so bad for the first families friend, she was so heartbroken that she had to make them leave.
They are scroungers who should never have put that poor woman in that situa\tion in the first place. What about erm...let me think...work?

Growing up, my family and I were homeless 3 times. I’m now an adult and I still deal with PTSD from some of the situations we went through. Seeing the dad trying so hard to hold it together was absolutely heartbreaking to watch, I know how he felt. I remember getting into one house finally, we sat and ate pizza on the ground because we had no furniture, but we were just so happy to finally have somewhere to go that it didn’t matter. I’m curious to know how these people are doing now. I hope they’re good.
I fricken cried 😢 probably through the whole thing. I showed my kids this film because they really needed to see that outside of their safe little bubble we've created for them, there is a world that meets nobody half way. They didn't last long into the film, but later on my son came back and asked me to show him the rest. He hugged me so hard and said that he didn't know that we were so rich. I drive a little Pontiac and work 2 jobs at a gas station and a restaurant delivering food, and he's spot on. I know many people think that they have the worst lives ever, because they ain't got the car they want or the clothes they would prefer to wear. You can only focus on those kinds of things when you're sitting warm under a roof with Food in your belly. I hope these people are in a better place today. I hope this goes to show many others how good they have it and how lucky we all really are. If this can happen to them, it could happen to any of us. We Never know what life has in store for us.
Aww thats so sweet. I used to do that too. Even though I am single mom and poor in my country we are among the top 15 percent wealthiest ..I cant believe the people in this film. That lady who didnt get payment from the department and then said theyre intentionally homeless? That's just disgusting. The school that after some days of a child staying outside the area says they cant have her...omg people go on holidays to the bloody algarve for more than two weeks and take time off school for it...here she is struggling and they put more on top of her trouble. Absolutely disgraceful how these people are treated. Meanwhile people with money can annoy their neighbours cause all sorts of trouble and not be treated badly. Its just disgusting.

As someone who's been in homeless shelters there are a few things that need to be said.
1. Its not as simple as get a job and rent a place. You can have a job but with all your savings gone you have no way to afford a bond and ways to look in the first place. Plus you're probably in debt by this point. Also looking for work is hard and doesn't happen overnight.
2. You'd smoke if you're life has turned to shit so don't go on your moral high ground and act like you're better then them.
3. Mentally it's tasking and not everyone is up to it. I can't tell you how many people try to kill them selves in shelters but it got to a point where a girl tried hiding in my room so she could slit her wrists.
It's the fucking pits of existence and unless you've been there you should never judge or hand out your shitty "advice".

When the Dad said he had to take his little boys picture because he already lost so much and broke down it broke my heart into a million pieces. I wish I could just reach through the internet and help these people. God bless him for being there for his wife and taking care of his children and not walking out like so many do. I just ask that God bless this family somehow.

I went through this as a child and I vowed that I would never put my kids through what I went through. My mom didn't want to ever work. There were plenty of jobs available at the time. She just chose not to work. My kids are grown up now and I kept my word, I never had them homeless or go through what I went through.
Now just hope your children don't have to go through it, because regardless of what anyone thinks, it can happen to anyone!
You didn’t “keep your word” you just didn’t have anything happen to you that would cause you to be homeless. These families didn’t choose this. What a condescending and judgemental comment. Homelessness doesn’t discriminate, and this can happen to ANYONE. Regardless of how much money you have, or if you have a good job.

What is ALSO TRUE, as this woman experienced is that some adults CHOOSE to do the absolute minimum, have no shame to live off the government in perpetuity and do it for generations. That would go against the government standard. It's a requirement to be inefficient and wasteful of time and money for every government program. When enough complaints happen they can then cut some waste as if they're doing something wonderful. Also remember governments are bureaucracies and any bureaucracy that isn't growing and need more workers gets their funding cut so they need to make sure there is more to do than they can get done.

This is my life but much worse. Im a single mom of 3 sons, my middle son is disabled, he's has 19 brain surgeries and is like an 18 mo old. No one cares how we live or that we are about to becone homeless. All I want to do is work and take care of my family but I have no one to take care of my son and their are no services to help. No one cares.

Gina M If you live in the UK, you need to contact SHELTER, go down to your local council and make a homeless application. If you have found your self intentionally homeless, they WONT house you and you will have to find private accommodation or they will be put into care , but because one of your children has a severe disability then maybe it’s different.

Until you have literally walked in their shoes, you have absolutely no right to judge. I mean, lived their exact lives, being able to relate is completely different. Every set of circumstances is different. So many judgemental people people commenting are just making themselves look immature. It is ok to not know everything or be able to understand because you never will. You are only responsible for your actions, and you aren't better than ANYONE sorry to inform you.

What a guy! Charlotte's dad is an incredible human being. What a role model to those kids. Wow - I am humbled by his dignity and strength. And I am floored by the injustice that can cripple a decent family.
I 100% agree!!!I guess I'm NOT the only Lara in this vast world,and one that feels like I do!My husband is alot like this incredible man and I adore him for it.I have suffered clinical depression and he takes care of me. I am always terrified something will happen to him cause of all the strength he shows but I know he must feel like crying like this poor dad at 10:30.We are only a couple paycheques away from homelessness at any time.Scares me to death but I am trying to be a strong partner for him too!

The wonderful children featured in this documentary are a complete credit to their parents. When I see with what these families have to contend on a daily basis, I realise I don't know what a real problem is. Watching this was both humbling and sobering; such things should not be able to occur in what we call a first-world country.

I am very proud of this man for putting in blood, sweat and tears to helping the family survive. Even during the most adverse circumstances, he kept going. People don't realize what they have until its gone.

Wow, this broke me 7 minutes in. Seeing the father having to explain to his kids they are going to become homeless again, having to move on AGAIN. I've been through a similar thing in the past 6 months, movinf from house share to house share, dodgy landlords, losing employment, losing benefits. It is an extremely difficult life to live, and that was only on my own. The thought of bringing 4 kids with me on such a journey, and a wife who is extremely mentally unwell, is unimaginable
I totally agree. I've got 2 kids, and though I'm poor, at least we've got a nice apartment to call home, a vehicle, food, clothes, internet and cable TV. I feel beyond blessed. My heart aches for these people, especially the kids. I feel very rich, and that certainly isn't the case!! I hate how unfair life can be. My heart goes out to them♡♡♡♡♡♡
I had hard situation too before , having no home and basic needs not met changed me. I got so desperate and no body would understand. I didn't want to die but didn't want to live at that time..but now I am ok, things did get better. No matter what what you are going through just remember that this is just temporary. And it will get better. Don't lose hope.
We're in the same position now, we're in a B & b, no cooking facilities, shared bathroom. We're grateful we're still in our local area. It's really not a nice situation, & my heart goes out to anyone, in the same position
Props to that older sister for helping out and being a second parent as her mom was unstable mentally.. that’s a lot for anyone to go through and especially the children.. her being there for her siblings, her dad and her mom is very honourable.
She’s a smart and strong girl. My heart breaks for her. I think she will be ok despite everything she has had to deal with.
I would like to tell charlotte s father that he is a real life hero for supporting his family the way he did. he showed a good example to his kids for sticking up for them, supporting them emotionnaly and help them to keep their head high through the devastating situation. hes a good man and he should be proud of himself and hope his wife gets better and start appreciating and being grateful for everything. may god lead you to the right path.

This is heartbreaking and eye opening. I can't believe this goes on in a first world country. Intentionally homeless is the most outrageous oxymoron I have ever heard!
I was homeless for most my teen years. It was more like move in move out, never had a stable house, neither did my parents have a stable job or income. Maybe around $300-400 a month. Though I have my business now and doing well in life, the thing that breaks my heart the most is remember my poor dad, he never let us sleep on a hungry stomach. He couldn't afford much medical care and his health kept worsening. By the time I could actually do something and afford the health care, it was too late, his heart was beyond repair and passed away two years ago. Two months after I got my first house. Sadly his health was too bad to enjoy the fruits of his last days. Sometimes it keeps me awake at nights and makes me weep. There is honestly nothing that I lack now, but the emotional trauma is still there and perhaps will always be there forever. At least in the West, humans still exist. Here in Africa, you're just an animal and nothing more.
It's a really touching and relatable documentary.

@The Poet I'm very sorry for your loss. Your dear dad was holding on for you and I believe he is resting in peace because he knew that you were in a better space and you would be ok. The one thing he would have like was for you to be happy so try and cherish his wonderful memory of strength and love and live life to the fullest. Smile whenever you think of him even as you allow yourself to miss him as that is ok. I hope you heal from your pain.

That father is so good and also as a husband. Four kids and a sick wife is a lot to handle for a person with a stable home. He keeps a calm sprit through it all.

Awe it made me smile at the end to see Charlottes moms hair growing back and a huge smile on her face. I couldn’t imagine the mental toll it must have been on her and the whole family , so happy they got their home at the end. Such a beautiful family with parents that love them!

May not be in the perfect family situation, but I have SOO much respect for the father. He has to go through the whole situation like the rest of his family, yet he holds the whole family together. He has to hold back the tears whilst he breaks the news to his children that they have to move yet again. He has to hold his wife together aswell. He is so strong, despite the crying (everyone does) he knows that he has to wake up everyone, get up off the floor and face another day.

I'm from The United States and live in the most liberal and generous of all the states, Massachusetts. I have to say, It amazes me how incredibly polite the British are. Even when you're being told that you and your children are being turned out on the street, through no fault of your own you still stay polite. It amazes me. I think it's a wonderful attribute because screaming and running your mouth never helps your case when your wrapped up in red tape. Just an observation, incredibly amazing.

The council dont care.when my ex husband lost hes job and coudnt pay the rent our local council told us they coudnt help. We had to find private acco before we got evicted. At the time i had a child under two and another under 12.we did find a private home.my kids are up now. Am 62 and in private accom. Its finding the months rent in advance that is the problem.
I popped this on while doing my make up this morning and I honestly struggled not to cry my eyes out. Charlotte is/was the most amazing big sister to her little brothers, and the pain her family went through, and the strain on her as a teenager - she handled that absolutely amazingly, she was phenomenal. Charlotte's dad and mum are both LOVELY people and phenomenal parents, put a lot of people to shame. What an amazing man and family. it breaks my heart that GOOD, good, wholesome, pure hearted people are subject to circumstances like this in life.
