Apart from the bowling, batting, fielding and decision-making, England aren’t far off challenging Australia for a decent draw.

Poor old Malan. I was quite disappointed they didn’t give him some praise for being our top run scorer. They mentioned a few times that only Stokes and Root would have a right to feel hard done by getting dropped but I definitely think the same about Malan. Is he just not very popular or something?!

As a neutral viewer, I wonder why all commentators play down Dawid Malan's contributions. He has consistently been England's second best batsman except on rare occasions when Buttler does well.

We were spoiled with Strauss, Cook, Trott, Pietersen and Bell being in one team together with an attack of Broad, Anderson, Swann and Tremlett

I’m an Aussie, I know the results so far look one-sided but there were some critical moments where I felt England could have changed the outcome, here are the key points I think England need to focus on :

As an Englishman living in Melbourne for 15 years, I love the Sky cricket podcasts. Feels like home hearing familiar voices. Sensible and balanced opinion, unlike the hyperbole you get in mainstream media in Australia.

I disagree on the Taunton point - Jarrod Kimber offers a great analysis that shows Taunton is very average turning ground in the global game. It might take turn by English standards, but not in comparison to other grounds overseas, and it's our overseas performances that are the issue.

Being an English teacher, I would strongly recommend Nasser Hussain and Mike Artherton for learners of English language and particularly those studying literature .They are a delight to listen to

More than 300 in the first innings and bowlers to take 20 wickets .is a must in test cricket

For seventy years , I have been hearing about the problem with county cricket. I feel the solution is creating a zone system (North ,South, East and West) and select teams and play four day matches from these groups. This would create a higher standard similar to our Sheffield Shield. I realise this is impractical now because of the phrenetic nature of present day cricket and the need to generate revenue but this would lift the standard and create the mindset needed,

When does the pressure come on Silverwood? He is the one that keeps selecting the wrong team... No Ed Smith to blame it on

I've never been a massive Rob Key fan but he made some excellent points about Root getting a second opinion or a bit of help and advice on the setting up of a game plan. Silverwood has to go and Giles needs a warning. be ruthless like Steve Waugh's Aussie side. They carried no slackers and that included dropping his brother in 2002 leading to Marks retirement.

Before I start my little rant, congrats gentlemen on your wise and insightful views on the current woes of the English cricket team. I enjoyed this very much and look forward to your next. As an Aussie, of course I want our team to dominate the Ashes and send your guys packing but I also share your obvious frustrations with unbelievable team selections. Leaving Anderson and Broard out of the Brisbane test and put them on ice reeked of England putting all their eggs in one basket in the hope of them bowling you to victory when in fact massive damage has already occurred both physically and mentally. I can’t help but wonder after hearing your comments on County cricket why England doesn’t include a system of a level above County which would offer stiffer competition and better prepare your national team for tests. I know it’s a simplistic idea but if England was split in four and North, South, East and West teams were chosen from the best players from the county’s - Wouldn’t this then provide a more elevated level of competition with the result being players chosen from these divisions are then available for selection to the national squad? I wish you well because I’d dearly like to see a closer contest. Merry Christmas and good luck Boxing Day. 👍🏻🇦🇺
